I find I am changing my 4gb II card more often than I would like and going to purchase a few 8 gb's, but my question is this.
From what I have found, the 40D is rated for type I and type II CF cards. Will the 40D use the newer type III or even newer type IV with no ill effects?
Thanks

The III and IV to which you are referring are Sandisk's own version numbers of their cards, nothing to do with type I or II. All of their cards are Type I - as are virtually all CF memory cards. Type II cards are slightly thicker and were a common format for CF Microdrives - a beast that has become extinct since high-capacity memory chips has made them redundant.

Your 40D will quite happily use Sandisk's Extreme III and IV cards - but you won't see much (if any) benefit of the faster cards as the 40D can't utilise the extra speed. If you have a good card-reader that might download faster from the Extreme IV cards.

^^^ Agree. I have used the SanDisk 4GB & 8GB Extreme III CF memory cards in my previously owned 40D without incident.

Same here. The Extreme III's & IV's work like a charm!

Don't be temptet to buy cheaper ones, they might be too slow for this camera when shooting series to the cameras potential (exceeding 6 shots a second).

Why? Get the cheapest card that gives maximum speed with your camera. For a 40D that'd be an Extreme III (or maybe an Ultra II) - Extreme IV is faster but pointless.

I was thinking Extreme III and in a 3 pack are reasonably priced.
I checked on the Ducati. Holy Batdoodoo!!! Talk about sticker shock.

Yes. A SanDisk Extreme III CF 16GB memory card can be used.
