More than 30 years ago, some people, probably students at the University of Colorado, decided that the University needed recognition and painted the letters, CU, far up on the face of the Third Flatiron. It must have been a daring feat, for the 3rd is generally considered a technical climb. This prank did not set well with the dear citizens of Boulder, and within a short time the letters had been painted over, with a color to match the sandstone rocks. But you can still see the letters, if you look closely about 2/3rds the way up the Flatiron. Cropped from Canon S500 image.

Interesting! I thought it was actually some fingers 'flipping the bird'!

I admire the skill but not the deed. It must have been hard to carry those buckets of paint but it is criminal to ruin such a pristine rockface for all those adoring the view. Unappreciated prank is an apt title.

We have a similar problem in San Diego. There is a mountain named Cowles Mountain which nearly lost its name, becoming known as Mount "S", because of a large white "S" painted on its side by San Diego State students. After decades of exposure to the elements, the "S" has pretty much faded and most people have started calling it Cowles Mountain once again.
