View Full Version : Rebel Firmware Hack - Flash sync speed in Av mode?

I've been reading about the firmware hack for the Digital Rebel. Several of the capabilities look quite useful, accept one.

What good is flash sync speed in Av mode? Seems to me that would be the same as using manual mode and setting the shutter at 1/200.

What am I missing?

Other than not having to worry about both settings at the same time - not sure. I also think that the flash acts differently in manul mode rather than in AV mode - it acts as the primary source in one mode and fill flash in the other mode - just cannot remember which is which. So your results with the flash could be quite different depending on which mode was used - AV or M.

In Av the flash is a fill, in manual it's the primary. I can't answer the original question sorry.

In AV mode the camera exposes for the background, leaving the flash to expose the foreground. Consequently shooting indoors, you end up with some very low shutter speeds, resulting in a well exposed, blurred background and a "haloed" foreground. In "most" instances indoors I don't really care about the background, so I almost always leave the shutter at 1/200 in AV. Others may prefer the opposite. Outdoors, with fill flash, I turn it off. (1/200). And yes, you could do the same in manual mode, just a little more round a bout way of doing it.

Bodog, setting to 1/200th in Av sounds like a hard way of doing things - you lose DOF control. Just use manual, 1/200th with whatever F stop you want, it's trivial to use and works well.

Nope, I almost always shoot in AV, so switching to Manual and then adusting shutter speed and aperture would be three added steps. I can still adjust the aperture in AV even though the shutter is locked at 1/200. Like I said, the only time I would change these settings would be for fill outdoors.

How? Changing the shutter speed always changes the aperture in my experince.

That's the purpose of the CF being discussed here; it locks the shutter speed at 1/200 in AV mode with the flash activated. The 10d, and (I assume) the 20d have the same CF

Ah, I see, must read up on it, thanks :)

Yes - the hacked firmware on the 300D allows the shutter speed to be locked at 200 - aperture can change and the shutter speed with remain the same............

For me, it's the most useful CF on my 20D.
Enabled it on the first day after discovering that the camera in P mode would give me 1/50 seconds @ 75 mm even when using flash

The advantage is that you use AV mode as always, but when the shutter speed gets too slow, you simply push open the flash or mount an external flash - talk about ease of use :D

You even see in the viewfinder that your flash has recycled ... that's when the shutter speed changes back from 1/13 or so to 1/250 (on the 20D)

Best regards,
Andy

i´VE GOT A 300 D CAN YOU DO THIS ON THIS CAMERA?Sure you can. Turn the dial to manual, the shutter speed to 200, and the aperture wherever you want.

Welcome to POTN! Now turn off your caps lock, relax and enjoy yourself.:)

Sure you can. Turn the dial to manual, the shutter speed to 200, and the aperture wherever you want.

J/K of course.

If I read Curtis' first post correctly, then the 'hack' on the 300D enables this functionality ... you have to install it in your camera before you can use it.

Then you just have to tip your 'flash' button for the flash to pop up ... no need to manually dial all the settings

BTW, welcome to the forum! If you have further questions, just ask...

Best regards,
Andy

what would be great is if people wouldn't type in all capsI agree, though it doesn't annoy me as much as people who fail to capitalize sentences or use proper punctuation.

But the most annoying thing of all is the inexplicable use of multiple question marks and exclamation points at the end of thread titles!!!!!!!!!! ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
