i could use some pointers as i havent ever shot B&W before

these were shot on an xsi using a 55-250mm lens

Nice one, but to my taste, I need a bit more contrast.

Definitely in need of a contrast boost to bring out the shadows a bit and give the image a bit of depth.

Another quick tip.. When shooting, try and bare in mind the rule of thirds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds). You will achieve much more dynamic and interesting shots. Having a subject dead centre in the frame is a little ordinary.

Your camera won't let you process your pictures in too many ways. If it's simply about contrast, that can be boosted in-camera, by adjusting your picture styles.
