i've been here a few years and my observation is the fellas (and gals) that are chronically discontent are soon caught up in a rapidly accelerating flipfest of gear that sometimes takes them to the darkside but either way they eventually lose interest in the hobby and disappear from the forums.

of course that's the extreme. i think for the most part most reach a level of satisfaction with their gear ... for awhile at least ;).

it depends on the person/photog i think. there are just people who are born with a very reasonable & practical mentality. some are also aware & accepting of what they can & cant afford which helps in getting satisfied easily.

im pretty satisfied with what i have right now...well, maybe i need the 85L & im set.;)

Now I have a 17mm f/2.8 coming tomorrow for it, and I'm eying the tiny yet ultra-capable 7-14mm f/4 (tiny lens, 14-28mm FOV, 35mm equiv)....though I can't really justify the $1100 it costs. Maybe someday!

Agree Stu,

As long as I don't find the stuff I have is limiting my vision I'm set. The only problem is I'm rarely 100% satisfied with my work. I think its that lack of satisfaction that keeps me working. I've also noticed the longer I do it the more I learn what equipment I need to capture my vision so for me I have most of the gear I really need. If its something special I e-mail CPS and it shows up at the office or I rent something from Calumet.

xxD shooter here. If somebody gave me $20,000 and told me that I would have to spend it exclusively on photographic equipment, I would struggle to come up with something. I'd probably settle on big glass. However, I do not at this time feel a dire need for it. Nor do I especially see the need for a 35mm sensor.

Yes and Yes. ;)

I'm very satisfied with my current pack of gear
20D + 17-85 IS for light duty/family snapshooting
1DMkIII, 16-35 L, 24-70 L, 70-200/2.8 IS L for "serious" shooting (mostly performance/event stuff)
One sigma 500 Super shared between them

Would I like more? Sure. I just recently found that adding a Sigma 120-300/2.8 might not be a bad idea based on my last performance shoot. My big issues are (a) its a Sigma, I've grown attached to mt L's, and (b) it lacks IS/OS, so a monopod would be needed, but I generally shoot hand held so this would be a major switch for me.

For me, if I had $20,000 for photo equipment, I would probably buy, off the top of my head:

5D Mark II (to replace my 30D): $2700
Canon 17mm f/4 TS-E: $2500
Canon 24mm f/3.5 TS-E II: $2100
Canon 100-400L: $1500
Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS: $1900
Canon 14mm f/2.8L II: $2000
Canon 300 f/2.8L IS: $4100

For my Oly E-P1:
Lumix 7-14mm f/4 (14-28mm - 35mm equiv AOV): $1099
Lumix 45-200mm: $300
Leica M to m4/3 adapter: $180
Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1: $1150
Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.4: $529

Total: $20,058

Dear Santa,

This year I want a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and a 17-55 f/2.8 IS. If the 60D comes out a used 50d would be nice as well, or a 5d classic.
