Hey everyone. I'm new to using flash, other than shooting in full auto. My problems are in full manual and aperture I was at my sister's trying to shoot her new baby in a low lit room. I had the camera set in M, I had it set at f8, and I had it set at 400iso. It was wanting a shutter of around 1/3 of a second. This was with our 5D with the 24-70. How would you set the flash for a shot like this. I was wanting to shoot hand held but the SS was too slow. I was ok shooting at 2.8 with iso at 800. Any help appreciated.

Also, anyone know of any links to help me understand using flash in manual modes.

Thanks

Sorry, forgot to mention. The flash was a 430ex speedlite. It had the plastic cover (forgot the name of these--the clear plastic cover that you fit over the flash) and I was pointing it up at the ceiling. The ceiling was white and only 8'.

Terry,
Set the camera to manual. Pick a shutter speed between your minimum handheld (1/30 or so) and 1/200. Select the aperture you want for creative reasons. Set the flash to ettl. The flash will adjust the power to expose properly. At least it should, you may have to adjust the flash exposure to fine tune it. Bouncing it will rob it of some of its power as will using the plastic thing (stofen?), but as long as you arent maxing out the flashes power it will compensate for those factors.

Great. Thanks. I'll start practicing this.
