I have a Digital Rebel XT and I'm thinking about a tele converter to give my Sigma 70-300mm macro super some more range.

I've been told that a tele converter will not work with the 18-55 and I don't quite understand why not.

I was wondering if any of you have one and if they work well or not?
I'm also concerned about the picture quality and if you can still shoot free handed or if the pictures with converter on need to be shot from a tripod?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Welcome to POTN :)

Have a read of this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41922). Generally, putting a teleconvertor on a lens that's a little soft will make it very soft, so even if it works you might not be happy with the picture. Then again, it'd probably be better than cropping and enlarging it that way.

The 18-55 kit lens is an EF-S lens, not a standard EF series lens made by Canon. The 18-55 lens sits farther back in the body of the camera. While there's no moving parts in the teleconverter (like a mirror) I would assume that the basic design of the EF-S lens is what makes it not work with a TC.
