I have ask about alot of lenses lately, and have got a lot of answers which I truly appreciate. I have one more, I am thinking about going over my budget a little nd purching this lens. I have 2 questions, 1. Is this lens as clear as the F2.8 2. Do I need to purchase the tripod ring and and use it with a tripod or can I shoot by hand?

Yes it is as sharp and yes you can hand hold it, if there is enough light. It's not a very heavy lens, but the tripod ring would be nice and it would put less strain on your camera body.

Cactusclay is right on. If it were my decision, I would wait on the tri-pod ring and see how much you use the tri-pod and how the camera works without it. Like Cactusclay said, the f'4 is not a particulary heavy lens. It is also an excellent choice if you meet most of the ands I mentioned in the "Opinion" thread.

I have this lens but not the tripod ring. I use it handheld. If I need to put it on a tripod I just use the cameras own tripod mount.

Whatever you do, wait on buying the tripod ring. I bought it and have never used it!!
It is very easy to hand hold and very light, so if you have to put it on a tripod, it really doesn't feel unbalanced.

The 70-200mm L f4 is light enough to be a walk-around lens... and it's capable of producing images so sharp you'll be frightened you'll cut yourself ;)

You will see no difference in performance between the 4 and the 2.8 (at f/4 and smaller), with the exception that the 2.8 has image stabilization. I have not missed it on the 4--the lens is heavy enough to be steady but light enough not to tax your muscles. To me, the 2.8 offers very little marginal utility over the 4, and those can be summed up by people who shoot in low-light conditions routinely.

The tripod ring is over a hundred bucks. I've put the lens on a tripod using the camera mount, and never ever felt nervous about it.

Would you be interested in selling it?

I'm a recent purchaser of this lens and yes, it's lightweight enough to carry around awhile and shoot hand-held. I've mostly been shooting in the f/5.6-f/8-f/11 range, with relatively quick shutter speeds (sometimes have bumped it up to ISO 800) and have had good results and have not had a need to place it on a tripod. I haven't really shot yet in low light circumstances, so not sure yet what will come out hand holding it at f/4 with a slower shutter. But the ones so far have been crisp, clean and sharp. I'll be taking it with me on vacation in 2 weeks, so hope to have a chance to give it more of a workout then. I'm also taking my tripod with me, but am not anticipating any problems NOT having the tripod collar as the camera/lens combo seems lightweight enough.

Peter, glad you like the photos. I was leaning against the handrail to takes these Zoo shots...it helps. I recently ordered a monopod (yet to be arrived) and I heard it will definitely helps the stability further. I guess it all depends on occations. In some you can definitely shot with handheld, some you prefer to have monopod (especially lower light situation, like shade in the Zoo)
