Both were taken with Canon A40 with 2.4 telephoto manual settings. Playing around with settings:lol:

That's a very old looking elephant. I'd like to have seen one of the entire elephant rather than just closeups of it's head. To one looks a bit dark to me, and both look oversharpened, but that could be the camera.

I agree - its frustrating not to see the whole animal.

I like the first... looks as if the elephant has some modeling experience
Don’t necessarily need to see the entire animal… like humans some take better shots at different angles – a rear shot may not be too good...

The second image has much more impact in my view however, I feel that a little more space to the left of the image would have helped give the dead tree some space. If you have cropped this then I would suggest trying again and this time cropping closer to the elephant's head and leaving some space for the tree. Also you could try a little dodging on the eye as there looks to be a "catch light" there this will help give more life to the elephant.
