My wife (5 months pregnant), Grandmother, and son picking blueberries in Vermont. C/C is welcomed, I'm realitively new to photography & PP so any advice is appreciated.

The people shots are a bit lacking. The first pose is most unflattering to your wife, the second one has deep shadows around her eyes, and we see nothing of the face in the shot of your grandmother. The shot with the blurred grandmother in the background is unflattering to her and the white detracts from the berries. The other shots are pretty good, and the closeup of the berries, in particular, is excellent.

Thanks for the critique jgrussell, always eager to learn ways to make my photos better. I can kind of see what you're saying about them, but they aren't really posing for the shots that I took except for maybe the one where my wife is smiling at the camera. This wasn't a photo shoot or anything, just trying to capture the day I spent with the family without really trying to interupt them for pictures. Are they most unflattering poses because they're hunched over? I probably should have tried to capture more interesting shots but they were pretty much hunched over picking berries the whole time. I also see what you're saying about the dark shadows, I wish I had a decent flash so that those dark shadows wouldn't show up so much in my shots. Thanks again though for the c/c.

I think you have a pretty good set here. I dont see a problem with the 1st shot, seeing as how the whole set is about them picking berries which should be a candid memory..so i like them. I think you have captured the moment nicely.

Thanks for the comments Christy, and I really was just trying to capture the moment, nothing too exciting...just picking berries with Gram. Here are a couple more of my son from that day.

I think it's a beautiful record of a great family day out. Nice job!

Thank you John and Anke for the encouraging comments. I remember picking berries with my Grandmother when I was a kid and thought it would be cool to take some photos of my wife & son picking berries with Gram too now that I'm married and have a kid of my own (and another on the way).

I really like the vibe of this whole set. In my opinion, the one of the orange flower would be alot better cropped closer and without the distraction of the car in the background. I really like the concept of the one of her picking in the background of the blueberries, however I almost feel like the depth of field should be a little bigger. She is blurred to a white and its a bit distracting. I really like the one of the boy with the blueberry. That one is my favorite. Nice job.

^I know exactly what you're saying with the orange lily, I wish I could have gotten that shot at a different angle but it was really a spur of the moment shot...I'm still trying to work on my ability to compose the shot on the fly. It happens all the time to me, I'll think I have the perfect shot (composition & everything), but then when I bring it up later I see that I chopped off somebody's foot or something, or I've got some really distracting subject in the background.

I also wish the DOF would've been greater in that shot of my grandmother in the background.

Thanks for the comments and the CC, I really do appreciate all the feedback because I really do try and use it to improve myself.

I like your pics. I think the first of your wife is fine for what you were going after. I really like the 'vibe' that I get from your wife in her second pic, a little flash will help with the shadows around her eyes. As for composition & objects in the background, I have the same trouble, but it gets better with practice.

Are they most unflattering poses because they're hunched over? The first shot is particularly unflattering because it greatly accentuates the size of the rear end which, as you should know by now, is not something most women appreciate...
