canon camcorder + any mic works?

stupid beginner question...

if i buy something like a canon HF200 or HFS100, can i use any third party mic so long as it has the mini plug? or does it have to be canon (like a dm50)

If the camera has a 1/8" stereo receiver jack...then you should be good to go.

I believe the Rode and the Sennheiser MKE 400(which I own) cables have 1/8" stereo ends.
