I've been surprised by the quality of some of the photos I've gotten with the 75-300 mm f/4-5.6 (non-IS) lately. A lot of people hate this lens, but I got it years ago with my Rebel 2000 and figured I'd try it with my new XS (something else a lot of people don't like. :))
This is my 2-year-old daughter (my 9th child) who refuses to pose for me most of the time. I happened to catch her in the backyard, which makes the capture even more fun. I like the B&W conversion because it really focuses on her and the light in her hair.
C&C are very much welcome:

I like it! Catching a light haired subject with outside lighting can be a difficult thing to accomplish. Especially, if that subject doesn't like to allow you to photograph her, to begin with! But, you did this without over exposing the highlights. Very nicely done!
Very cute little one. Did I read that correctly, though? Your NINTH child? And I thought I had my hands full with 3 daughters... =]

Thanks so much -- yes, she's baby #9 :) I appreciate the comments on the photography, too. Yes, it's hard not to blow out the blond hair in the sun.

I think it's a great capture, even if it is stolen. Like you said, wonderful detail in her hair & her expression is too funny, she has a subtle "oh no you didn't" look going on.
My son never poses for me either, he's at the age where he's too cool to pose for the camera and smile (11 yrs old, about to be 12). The only photos I get of him now a days are stolen shots.

Thanks, djready, I have older kids, too, and they sometimes hide from Mom and her Camera, lol, but she is the WORST. Her 4-year-old brother, however, is always willing so sometimes I can tempt her a little with jealousy :D

Thank you. Though mine sometimes resist my photographic efforts, I know that the photos will be priceless to them someday. :)

Ive actually been really happy with my 75-300 also! Im glad I didnt sell it when I had the chance. The big zoom is great for candids! This is a great shot, it envokes emotion.

Thank you! That lens gets mightily trashed on this board, so I'm surprised by the fun pictures I've gotten lately (and good quality.) Unless you can afford a big upgrade, I say hold on to it. A zoom is super-handy (esp. with resistant subjects.) :)
