sore (bowflex    ) but happy.
Daughters coming down for the weekend!

What's been happening around here? Anything?

we've been talking about fake meat and my weird drug induced dreams... I am currently playing with a themometer.. One of the guys bought the wrong kind so they can't be used outside.. but, I stuck it on the door of my patio and i'm watching the temperature drop. just as soon as it stops I plan on taking a picture and sending it to my sister in San Diego as proof that i'm not a wimp anymore.. have I mentioned all of the ski resorts are open and this entire town has closed down and headed up the mountaintops?... and i'm stuck here.. I did serve one salmon provolone omelet though...

Salmon provolone....that actually sounds good. Will you have time to get out and do any shots or anything today?

Nothing exciting here. I'm "culling the herd" today....going through my photos of the wilderness bird shots and getting rid of most of them...just keeping a couple that can be used for "first one" shots (that still aren't good but I've got this beautiful owl....just flying around......it's a little blurry but it's my first ever wild owl...so it stays). Then I have to clean house for my family tomorrow. That won't be too bad.

it depends it's now well below freezing a lot will depend on the wind when/ if I go outside.. I do want to take some pictures at the ski resorts and my buddy Ryan has been threatening a ski boarding lesson for weeks.. sounds like you're going to have a nice weekend I just heard from my sister and it seems she's going to be coming up for Christmas, she hasn't been in Idaho for seven years and I haven't seen her for three so i'm more than a little excited, heck I might even post a photo of my twin.... that will be kind of close to a photo of me... ;)

I thought you weren't identical? :) I mean I could put up a photo of my brother, but he looks nothing like me.

but it will be wonderful to see her I'm sure! How exciting. Family is the best & they just make the holidays for me. (of course, I'm not including the family that is the "pain in the arse" type..   )

were not... but, were still sisters ;) .. I am excited to see her and a little nervous she tends to bring havoc with her where ever she goes.. She usually has a plan for something that has disastrous results and I end up getting blamed for atleast part of it.. wish me luck.. But, we do pick through eachothers wardrobes and as crazy as she is I do miss her.. Atleast i'll be happy she's here for about a day and a half and then I want her to go back so my life can be normal again.. Meg is kind of like that devil on my shoulder you don't really have much control over..

I'm envious, even of the devil on your shoulder. I've never had a sister. A brothere yes, (sometimes several, depending upon who my father was married to) but no sisters.

Tofu? Is that something you use to deodorize your smelly sneakers?
Now I know what to do with those Bocca Dogs in my freezer- they are conveniently shaped for sneaker deoderizers.

ALmost wish I had stayed on campus a bit longer. Snow is really coming down and I could have taken photos. I actually carried my camera with me this morning. Dumb a$$ed thing to do though- the wind was so high every time I crossed an icy patch that I had a heck of a time keeping my feet. I just knew I'd fall on my tush and crush the camera as I went down.

The shot from this morning was a crystal fractal....sliced and mirrored to produce the image you see....about 20 hours or so of play time...

The latest one I posted is a brightly colored model car....highly illuminated....shot through a 1" sheet of ice that I froze in a big cake pan....hot water eroded the surface a bit...

Wow.....now there's some serious effort! For both shots!!! I think I need to re-think creative! I'm stuck in a "darn it, when am I gonna get that bird shot" mode. Anyway, that crystal is wild...what programs were you using to do this? Both are quite cool abstracts!

edit: I'm glad to see some of yours (and others photos). Even if we don't have any competitions, just to see some photos does stimulate the creative juices...

The fractal program was given to me by a friend of mine that teaches at Cornell. It is just a basic fractal program that will morph an existing image. I think there are a few commercially available fractal programs that will do the same...

I have "On One, genuine Fractals" but it's just an enlargement program. Using fractals it's able to enlarge a photo w/o deterioration. Can't do anything else with it.

Yours is very interesting though. I like it.

edit: off to get some lunch...see you guys later.

Wow, Wool! another winner! I'd hang both of those if they are as captivating in print as they are on my screens. I'm even inspired to shoot. . . wish I had picked up a couple things before the bad weather hit.

speaking of which, I need some HELP! IT has only snowed about 3 inches on top of the ice. If it doesn't get close to the forecast 8-12 in, I am going to have to go to school tomorrow for WORK!!! I'll be busy all day and not get to take any photos :(

Everyone grab your sleighbells, or whatever is handy, and jingle away so the good snow fairy visits I'm-poor-ia overnight and fills the landscape with fluffy whiteness! Please? Wu needs a snowday

About the image No#2. Your left hand is too far down the barrel...so much so that you have lost the support of your elbow pressed against your chest. Despite the IS, that's not good in my experience. Try to have the left hand cradle the tripod ring foot, and do not let go regardless of the lens elevation/azimuth. See what works better for you.

I had the greatest time when I was there last year... My favorites were the beach, up on the hill with the lookout of the space needle.. going to the space needle was a little disappointing though.. (all of the railings got in the way of my shots). and the freemont Market and Pikes Market were great... oh, and the way the bridges raised up for traffic.. and then the tour and going down to Pioneer Square... ofcourse the week I was there we had perfect weather the entire time which my cousin promised me is not the norm..

PG.. you are sooooooooo going to get flamed for the lack of a hood yaknow? ;) it seems that using filters and no hood on POTN is a sure way to get creamed...

You look great! Second photo in particular does justice to you...very professional looking.

I wanted to take one of myself like that but forgot to bring the P&S..

It does feel odd mounting a little plastic A530, complete with PLASTIC tripod screw thread, to a Arca-Swiss B1 (workalike, not the real thing, but feels like it) monoball, on top of a Gitzo (again workalike but very well made) legset...... the ballhead is a 25 pound rated one and the legset is 10 pounds.. for a little handful of a P&S ;)

Normally I would not in such a hurry to buy a Chinese-made tripod, but it seems that they got very, uhh, 'inspired' by the great brands and my cam dealer let me play with it for an hour till I was sure it would work.. then he slapped a Nikkor 300/2.8 with Nikon pro body on top of it at a 45 deg angle just to show me how much weight it could useably carry.

I figured by the time I got my 300/2.8, I could damn well afford a better tripod (including Wimberly gimbal head).. but at the rate it is going, it seems I am exceptionally unlikely to adopt a 300/2.8 ever in the first place, so this tripod suits just fine. :)

Oh no, I am just re-iterating the bull that is served daily around these parts ;)

I long since concluded that my 17-40's hood is useless, so I leave it off. I get badass flare even with the hood on (without highlights in the frame), so. "Take the filter off" no I ain't leaving home without the CPL. Which is a B+W MRC F-Pro to begin with. Tough to find anything better. Even Heliopan may not present any noticeable improvement over B+W.

Even deep hoods are of limited help when shooting on coastal conditions when you and your lens get a full dose of salt spray. Or artificial snow at a downtown Christmas parade in a land that does not snow.

Mechanical protection - they are only useful when you are being jostled around in a crowd. I concede my 24-105's hood came in useful that day.

I think that the real reason hood serves to impress people. I can tell you that half the time I put the hood on, it's for that reason. ;)

You know.. when you want to get through crowds and move people so you can get your shot the extra length with a hood usually gets the job done.... but, it would probably be a lot more effective if I was a foot taller...

I am just envious that a girl carries more gear than I do and can get away with it.... I am a lightweight as I have always said...... ;)

My idea of a good trip is to leave home with 3 lenses, all under the 750gm limit, and ONE 5D..

Thanks LS...it was a forest...there was no possible way for flare! But with the 24-105, I rarely use it's hood at all because wide open, I have serious fall off with that one.

Actually the 24-105's falloff is integral to the lens. Stopping down at widest end to f/8 or zooming in to 28mm will clean it up nicely. I've done quite a lot of testing with and without hood and I can tell you it's most likely not the hood. Hoods show up as nearly completely black patches (mount the EW-83H for 24-105 on 17-40 on full frame and see it).

This is why I use the 17-40 when 24mm performance is critical, because by the time the 17 is zoomed in that far, vignetting disappears. However I don't hesitate to use 24mm on the IS zoom when I need to though...

You know.. when you want to get through crowds and move people so you can get your shot the extra length with a hood usually gets the job done.... but, it would probably be a lot more effective if I was a foot taller...

sari

That does work ;) (hoods are always on when I'm amongst the crowds)

The other thing is that it makes the camera look a LOT bigger if you stare down the barrel. Positively huge. I took a look into the front (which I seldom if ever do for good reason) the other day and even I was stunned by what a huge bore it had. Celebs, VIPs and other people who want the attention also get attracted by the large bore and ham it up for you. PERFECT! It worked last Christmas parade.. despite the fact I was not badged media 8)

One funny story.... I was shooting a long exposure 30 sec shot on a tripod with 17-40 and huge hood, when some guy walked in front of my lens, stopped, eyes grew so big I thought they were gonna pop out as he stared into the front end of that rig, before he moved on. He didn't show up in the shot because he was only there for a couple of seconds.. but it was funny. I ignored him :D

My idea of a good trip is to leave home with 3 lenses, all under the 750gm limit, and ONE 5D..

Okay, I look like H E (double tooth picks) in this, but just so you know, I'M A WOMAN not a goil! (albiet a disheveled and tired one in this photo).

hehe.. I was able to keep lots of folks out of my way when I did these shots.. it was a public park and somehow the big white lens with the hood literally parted the crowds for me.. Kids didn't walk in front of me and the performers posed constantly..

Actually, you've given me a good idea about the two cameras, I notice you're not carrying a bag. The Domke is 2 pounds dry and empty, and always seems to weigh 5 pounds whether or not I am carrying cameras in it (probably due to all the ancillary junk I carry).

So... if I was to sacrifice the bag then carrying a second body would seem very much more feasible.

My favorite threads are the ones that I start in the Critic's Corner with an out of focus picture of some fingerpainting that a kindergarterner made, and ask for honest opinions. It's fun to hear some of those guys go completely apoplectic.

That's just cruel...have to go check it out!:lol:

Not nice of him to holler CPR and then disappear.
Hopefully, he is snoozing. I should try to do the same. I'll be back up in a couple hours. Since not enough people jingled enough bells, I bet I have to go to school in the a.m.

It was hard. I squirted myself in the eye with grapefruit. But I overcame my pain and was only thinking of wool's well being.

What in the hell are you doing with a grapefruit at this hour of the night?
My well being seems to be in serious jeopardy.

Loved it. Now Antonio Banderes...well, he did quite well, don't you all think (how's that for politically correct when one's husband is online?) ;)
