Just a point of curiosity....why the big fascination with shooting a picture of a BIF? Its not like there is any big market for them....nor are they all that interesting...

That's a matter of opinion! ;)

It gets in your blood, I tell ya!

Mo.. just read your comments in the trade thread re: 5D. You've got some very good points there - I would never give up my FF for anything despite the chorus of all those screaming "FF is not what it's cracked up to be and the N is so much better". Never. If it's anything to go by, I sold my 1D recently.

See?

Congrats on your wedding Mo.

I have another one June 9th. They are really fun...people are so interesting and I am not one of those photographers who gets my panties in a bundle to get the "perfect shot". I prefer most of the candids of the day.

I agree with Wool about the BIF. YOu have other talent. Eyes for other things.
Go look at your gallery, woman. you have lovely shots there. Think of those awesome Abbey shots!
Don't give it up. Muses get lazy and ornery sometimes. look at mine. been on vacation for months. I went through the "sell it all" phase several times. I keep hanging on. one day I'll find some inspiration. OR the weather will get nice enough to get out and force me to go look at the world again.

I agree 100%. Besides, it is fun to shoot whatever spikes your interest at the moment. I don't profess to be the greatest photographer at anything but I have tons of great memories of everything in my life. And that makes me happy.

That's what I would like to try ....do you recommend one lens (cuz that's all I would buy). Some have said get the 100, others swear by the 60mm. I am not sure....

I have the 60 (which is ef-s). I love it. But if I had it to do over again I'd probably get the 100. I think it's more versatile. I've never used the 100, that's just my perception based on what I've read.

No, OTOH, I don't feel a compelling need to go out and shoot every day, or even every weekend. I shoot when my muse takes me, and what I like to. Today I pulled out the D60 (and reaffirmed that the 20D was an essential step up), 5D and A620 with 24-70 and 24-105 for a Peke Club meeting, expecting just to get the 2 dogs of our hosts. In addition (and I really regret not having brought the 70-200 IS) I ended up with 2 new fosters and the club president's pack all romping together in the late afternoon. Tough conditions; not a lot of good stuff, but I was able to firm up my equipment needs and ideas.

Okay Perm, just for you I'm going to completely humiliate myself.

Here is my best BIF shot from today -- and I'm not kidding! Like I said earlier, the light today was horrible. Had to go to ISO 500 and still didn't get it.

Sometimes it just isn't going to happen. My biggest learning so far has been to know when to not set myself up for disappointment. In the past I took it personally when I couldn't get a decent shot. Now I recognize when a great shot isn't possible (and I try anyway...)

Anyway...here you go:

I've got the old 100. It's probably the sharpest lens I own. Not only does it do spot on macro, but it's also an awesome portrait lens. I'm not too sure the 60 would be in that same portrait field. Something for you, Mo, to consider....

Get the 100. That way you've got larger 1:1 objects and 2 FoV choices available. The 60 and you're stuck with 1:1 no larger than 15x22.5 mm and only on the 20D.

I'll see if I can find them.... That's the tough part... I'm very disorganized right now. My New Year's resolution was to sort out my XHD, which I'm doing right now. If and when I find them, I'll get them to you, and alert you to their presence via PM. If nothing else, I'll shoot some new ones tomorrow after our friends take off.

You know, in retrospect, I believe I took some portraits of Lisa with the 100... and she, like most women, wanted me to immediately delete them, even though they turned out pretty nice....

Mo.. I'm an owner of the 60 macro. I recommend you get the 100 ONLY because it is FF compatible. I bought my 60 at a time when FF meant 1DsM2. Even today, that is simply not financially feasible for me. However...

There is something truly special about the 60. The look and feel of its images is something I have rarely seen. I don't know what it is - but every shot that comes out of the 60, regardless of what I mount it on, has a look that is nothing short of amazing. I 'reengineered' my 60 and mounted it on my 1D and the shots that came out of it absolutely floored me. So it transcends platforms as well. It would be my portrait lens of choice. I bought a 85/1.8 and the 60 macro makes it look like a sorry excuse for a lens. Purple fringing, soft wide open.. naah. Give me my 60 any day of the week. I might be axing the 85/1.8 if it doesn't shape up any time soon. The only draw of the 85/1.8 is the large aperture, but I have to stop it down to f/2.0 to get rid of the purple haloing (even indoors in controlled lighting), and there's only one stop difference - I'll bump ISO to compensate.

The ONLY tiny item I would want to add to my wishlist of the 60 is a focus limiter. When working at normal-to-infinity ranges, the 60's USM is blindingly fast. It's when it hunts, that it slows down.

When I got my 30D recently it was like a breath of fresh air being able to use the 60 again. I contemplated selling it so many times because it didn't fit on my 5D - and simply couldn't bring myself to do it. I'm glad I didn't. There are things about the 100 I'm not too keen on, but these concerns have always been dismissed as irrelevant here, so I won't bring them up.

Oooooo... nice!

Love the background of blue and green blending into each other - it makes the bright pink (bold pink? ;) ) of the flower stand out.

And as for the 60's raw imaging performance, it has an MTF curve that is shared only by less than half a dozen other lenses - all of them Big and White.

Some of my favorites from the 60. It's usually tasked with product photography in my hands, so you'll see more gear and less flowers.

Thanks. I hurriedly took this shot on my front porch last spring to beat the deadline of a photo contest in our local newspaper. This one got published (in a really tiny size). It received honorable mention.

The wind was blowing. So I was trying to hold it with one hand and shoot with the other. The blue is the pot it's in on the front porch.

Thanks again for the feedback!

it's good to see that so many others are good at taking some bad shots. :) that's one thing I like about digital, I can keep trying.

that's also why I like shooting macro. it's easer to get the photos than say shooting birds. However I don't think I could just shoot macro, I like to keep trying to shoot different things.

That's the thing.. I would never have learned if I had never put well over 22K+ frames thru my DSLRs. I'm actually losing track of how many frames I've used, but it's becoming less and less relevant as I climb into the higher numbers. I just use what I need to and don't give a hoot about those saying 'you shoot too much' or 'you this, you that'. Not like I care about film. When I used film I was so afraid of making mistakes and so concerned about using up film that ONE 36exp roll would last me six months.

You should see my workflow. Yes I shoot extensively in JPEG, I would say 80% of my stuff is JPEG, but you should also see me bracketing and culling. I'm very efficient at that :p Fastest and most practiced part of my workflow is the delete key..

Speaking of digital..

Last night at the dinner table, I was demonstrating drive mode on a friend's Powershot S3 IS and drew a comment "You took all those photos of WHAT?" and I said "I'm just pointing it out of the window and testing" only to draw a look of horror till my friend said "It's DIGITAL.. he's not wasting film"

OMG. http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/banghead.gif

Later, same person shot across the table "I think anybody who spends $3K on a camera is just stupid" in front of my face (full well KNOWING what I do).

At least I didn't diss them to their face.

Great reply! I'll bear that in mind the next time it comes up.

Some people are so old fashioned and conservative they 1. cannot see why others think differently and 2. are completely unwilling to accept anything that conflicts with 'their' ideals. This relic is definitely one of them.

At least I pretend to smile at the dinner table even if I totally disagree with their comments.. one would have think they would have learned at least that much in life.

Yep, that delete key. could never figured out where it is. in fact the 10D is a bit slow I don't think it works well on the field. In fact I even hate reviewing photos on it. It just takes toooooooooooooooooooo long.

some people just don't get it. I like telling people how many photos I can take just for the shock value.

Question for you (especially Woolly):

I ordered the Carson Lenspen MiniPro when I ordered the 50 1.4. When I touch the tip, it turns my finger black. It does the same thing to paper.

Am I missing something or is this not right? I'm afraid to touch it to a lens. Any advice?

When I was in Reno, I ran into the people with the 10D and the 17-40L. When I offered to take the picture for them, the loudmouth at their table asked me if I'd ever seen a $10,000 camera before. I assured him I had not. I didn't have the heart to tell him he hadn't either.

Should have shown him the 1Dsmk2 with a "brick" on it...ask him for an estimate...that must be a $50,000 unit by his math.;)

It is supposed to be black....uses a graphite based cleaning compound...harmless to fine optics. Put the cap on...give it a couple of twists to reload the compound and then clean away.

Won't it mark the lens?

Never liked the lenspens. Graphite it may be, but it leaves a residue. I can see smudge marks when I angle the lens against the light.

I use bad breath and microfiber. Usually, the bad breath makes the dirt so terrified, it simply leaps off the lens. Simplest and easiest field cleaning solution.

Of course I don't kiss people on a regular basis either, so that works for me. :p

2 and 3 are nice.... the telephoto compression works here. I know this is a term that is thrown about a lot by the knowledgeable and the not so knowledgeable, and it can make no sense at all - let me explain

An ultrawide angle can make small spaces look huge. Distant objects look MUCH further away than they really are. Telephotos are the reverse - they compress a scene, bringing distant objects closer. #3 is a good example.. the ocean looks as if it is almost going to jump on top of the people :)

So UW increases the apparent relationship distance between the objects, tele does the opposite. Problem with shooting beaches with a UW I find is that everything just looks so tiny, small and far away. Good idea.. maybe I should try a tele next time.

very nice.

I have never been a fan of frames on the web. You could say that I am bit old fashion with thinking that frames are for the photo once it's printed.

And it seems that a lot of people choose the same old ones, which look boring.

However when it comes to a printed subject then that's a different case, I believe that each frame should enhance the photo, just applying the same frame to each photograph regardless of the content seems dumb.

Do you live in central Cph, how big now & did you buy or is it a rental?

Nice build Lonnie.
I'm partial to AMD cpu's and one thing I learned, SILVER cases show much less dust than BLACK, much more low maint. That is the lazy streak in me.
When I get the extra RAM I also plan on blue lighted 120mm fans.

I only had one AMD, and that sucker always ran so hot even the case was too hot to rest a hand on. That PC scared me, and I've avoided AMD ever since then. The P4 I have now stays very cool, even on hot summer days, so I guess I'll just stick with what works for me.

I never thought of trying a different colored case. I've always had black. It sits under my desk mostly hidden though, so I guess it doesn't matter much to me if it gets dusty. :)

I just saw a T-V program where really nice 650 square ft apartments in San Francisco and Washington D.C were $500,00 and up but in Montana you could get a 3500 square foot house on a bit of land for that.
Location, location, location

It varies but about 100 square meters.

I don't live in the center but only have about 20 minutes with bus to the center. My apartment is a rentall. I pay only 1800 dkr a month ($300). Very cheap but only 68 squaremeters.

1800 dkr/mth?! For 68kvm? That's disgustingly cheap! That's what students here pay minimum for 28kvm.*faints*

Is it a nice flat & area? Geesh, and you have a good salary, no wonder you can go to Africa...:p

I'm paying 5280 skr ($755) for my 55kvm.

Ouch. Yeah I was really lucky getting this place.

Its a nice apartment just too small. The area could be better. There has been several break-ins in my building. Fortunately for me the apartmens that has been hit sofar all have their frontdoor hidden from view. My front door is in plain view. All the surrounding neighbours would be able see a thief. But just in case I put up bars at the windows and when I leave I lock my front door with a lock that can't be opened without a key. So if a thief gets in through the small space at the windoes he won't be able to walk out the front door with my stuff.

Mooooooooooooooooorning all! Apartments here average about $1.25/square foot per month. Most of them are right around 800 square feet and about $1,000 per month. There are some smaller and less expensive ones right around the university....but those are really student housing.

The apartments in this building are about 600 square feet and go for $2500 a month....

I need some advice guys.
Maureen's computer keeps crashing and I have been driving myself crazy (a short drive, I know) trying to fix it. I've done everything I can think of except replace the MOBO all to no avail. It will work for awhile then go back to random crashes. It was in the shop for a week while she went back east and never once hiccuped

Anyway I've decided that a new unit is the way to go. Check out my proposed build from www.ibuypower.com (http://www.ibuypower.com) and tell me what you think.

Oh yeah I will be installing 2GB PC 6400 RAM for an additional $200 from NewEgg rather than the $270 that ibuypower wants.

Skip...that looks like a nice set-up...I think it must be about time to replace my 3200 Barton as well...but it has served rather faithfully and used to run circles around anything out there before the x64 stuff hit the market.

No company...they bailed and forgot to tell us
so while I waited, I pp'd some landscapes I'd taken last Sat (but hadn't even looked at). The 70-200 and the 1.4 tc combo wasn't really made for landscapes but hey, I don't think they did too bad...

Lisa, I totally understand why you want to sell your gear and give up photography - these are horrible.

PLEASE!!!

These are fantastic!!!

I especially like the first one. My dad worked just down the street from where you were standing when you took this. (For everyone else's edification, this is the town I lived in for 17 or so years, moved 3.5 years ago).

Seriously, Lisa, these are really nice. Let the bird picture skills develop. It'll happen. Focus on these (pun intended;)) types of shots while bringing up your skill in the other area. Before you know it, your BIF shots will be right there as well.

Another thought about your BIF shots...given your preferred shooting areas (National Wildlife Refuges) and the inherent distance of said birds, you may need to consider re-purchasing the 1-4. You're going to be hard pressed to get a really good shot, except on rare occasions, with anything shorter. Just a thought. Now, if you were to take up pigeon-park shooting like PekToral, you wouldn't need to worry about it! ;)

I'd up the power supply; in my circles NZXT's pretty much an unknown for reliability, and a marginal power supply (on any of the rails, not just overall rating) can give some of the hardest-to-isolate problems; and a power supply degenerates faster than almost any other component. Ideally, PC Power and Cooling, but the Enermax or Thermaltake are good lines.

I'm torn. I've always liked da Bears defense, but Manning has been so close for so long, and I really respect Dungy.

I guess I just want a good game. I'm getting a bit tired of "one hit wonders". (Oakland, Tampa, Pitt, etc.)

I'm not a big football fan, so I don't much care. I did happen to watch most of the Colts game against New England, and it was one of the better games I can remember. For that reason, I'll probably silently root for them. Beyond that, I won't care who wins or loses, and by Tuesday, probably won't remember.
