I ain't wearin' no shoes as we speak :lol: Of course we are currently having a heat wave - with rain now. I think it cooled off this eveing to 55 degrees. OK, here's a bed time story for you. There I was, bored out of my skull, trying to capture a macro shot of a water drip. Had the tripod all set up. the remote, the bowl of water, all that. I was really in the "zone". (Please excuse the blurry...)

trying to perfect the timing/exposure/etc.

And he was "requested"....he's doing the martyr thing to inspire sympathy from all you manly men types...I simply asked him to post the shot....batted my eyelashes, turned down the lights and dangled the 24-105L in front of him....(that's called subtle persuasion) ;)

I thought you said you were going to bed! Surprised to see you still here....

I am waiting to get home to purchase the 70-200/4 IS, and then we will see about the 'fast prime' problem after that.. either that or I may be so happy with the 7-2/4 ISL that I don't bother buying any fast primes and simply leave it. 5D + ISO rules..

The 300/4 is up to $610 now...hoping it will fetch closer to what it is worth.

. . . I am currently playing with a themometer.. One of the guys bought the wrong kind so they can't be used outside.. but, I stuck it on the door of my patio and i'm watching the temperature drop. just as soon as it stops I plan on taking a picture. . .

I think you should post that here. I will be interested in seeing how cold it gets. I don't get the snow where I am.

I read somewhere the best way of doing this is strobing your flash. If you don't already have an external flash, get one and make sure it does the function of stobe. What you do is have the shutter open for a bout a sec or so and strobe the flash. the camera will capture the light coming of the water.

As for the next trip, what about a world trip. As a group I am sure we could get a discount.

I know....I'm crushed http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/cry.gif http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/crackup.gif

Actually it's a good strategy if you view things from a logical perspective. Your suggestions on what to buy are great! I might actually start with the 85/1.8 so as not to punch that big a hole in the wallet. Oh, did y'all notice that B&H recently hed a gigantic Condition 10 sale? I bookmarked their "Used lenses" page and got SO many results I accidentally thought I loaded the regular lens pages so I refreshed a couple of times!!

These are probably a bunch of Canon refurbs that have come back (B&H is the 'factory outlet' so to speak). 135/2 was $699 last night, down from $900. But not now.. I don't feel tempted. I will wait for the next sale.. but I can tell you these sales are fantastic! What a way to save a bundle. The stuff is all gone today, but it was nice to know they come around. One has to act fast though..

WTS: photographer, condition 6. Shows signs of prior abuse. Not very good condition, with more-than-normal sanity loss for its age due to a high toll inflicted by its usual operating environment. Occasionally takes good photos but takes a lot of digital exposures to ensure that. Lots of brassing around the edges but edges still remain sharp. Optics are in fair condition but require dioptric correction.

You're right, finding a buyer could be hard ;)

Interesting thought:

28/1.8 and 85/1.8

Take two bodies (obviously). This will give me

28mm (28 on 5D)
45mm (28 on 350D)
85mm (85 on 5D)
135mm (85 on 350D)

Wow....that *IS* a very nice spectrum of cover with just two lenses that can be easily switched when the situation demands!

man you should NEVER let the owner value the property...either they value it too high or way too low!!!
The ad should run something like this:
WTS: photographer...mid 20's or thereabouts, condition 10. Works hard. Is funny and kind. A little lacking in sanity but makes up for it in humor. Takes very good photos but more importantly likes to travel all over to take them. Promises to drink less when happy! Inquire by PM.

Now that's what I call an evaluation based on fact (not prejudice) ;) Night LS!

WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!

I'd been bidding on a tripod collar, but was outbid a day before, and forgot to put in an updated bid. Then just today, I logged into my account to see a second chance offer, either the top bidder chickened out, or whatever (I don't know, nor do I care), so I nailed the collar with Buy It Now...... OH YEAH!!!!

This is a 3rd party collar, but it is $40 cheaper than the cheapest price I could find on the original and has been tested by our own POTN'er LightRules, so it's good to go.

Oh, and .. what collar.. 70-200/4 collar..

We all know where this is going.. that basically means I'm all set to buy the lens!

Chief nourisher in life's feast.

Oh dear... another BFK maybe?

Sometimes I don't sleep well when I know I have much to do tomorrow.. I sleep best when tomorrow's gonna be same ole routine.

Ebay second chance offer - let's say you're a seller, you sell an item, highest bidder wins, the usual stuff. After winning, highest bidder contacts you to back out, or you determine he is not eligible (ie. needs shipping to a country you don't ship to). So you cancel the bid and send a Second Chance offer to the next-highest-bidder who's notified and then has an option (non-binding) to purchase the item at their previous highest bid.

Looks like something happened and I got it.. at a few bucks less too :D

Anyway after reading a bit more I have decided that the 70-300 IS is far superior to the 70-200/4 ISL in terms of value, so I am keeping it.

JUST KIDDING!!!

(wait, that was not good, I'm not supposed to wake you up and make you spilll the BFK am I ;) )

That is the problem of having an outstanding LCS (Local Camera Shop) with good dealers whom you get on well with. The senior staff are photogs themselves, some of which have fairly impressive work they share with us on occasion. All have their own eccentricities and preferences and some even like Noink... ;) (should hear the D200 pimping going on!!)

Hmm...

All I want for Christmas is a 85/1.8, 100 macro, 135/2, 200/2.8, 70-200/4 ISL, 1.4X TC, 2X TC, 70-200/2.8 ISL, now how many was that?

:D

Naah.. I am not greedy and I am grateful for how many of my dreams have already come true (FF, 24-105, 1-4, collar, 724ISL). I just ask for one. I will decide whether to build the lowlight kit when I get back, perhaps I may not. I am actually hoping that the 5D will pull thru on f/4 (you'd be surprised how much of a difference f/5.6 to f/4 is, but even more surprised that f/4 to 2.8 is NOT, at least not to me) with clean high ISOs.. and work out :)

It is easy to forget how some have to work with less.. I was just advising someone with a 350D, 18-55, 75-300 - and realizing that not so long ago *I* was that user. Sub the long lens with a Tamron 70-300 and you know where we're driving at.

Sounds like a plan :)

I never did appreciate the 50/1.8 (80mm equiv) on a crop.. but then again the 50/1.8 never lent itself to being that much appreciated anyway!

Hmm.. maybe I will like the 85 better especially if I mount it on the 350D (135mm). I did use the long end of my 17-85 quite a fair bit too.

I agree that I don't like the length of the 50 on a cropped body.. I've found it more than difficult indoors but, it does have it's places and definately has a justifiable following.. I've appreciated it on more than one occasion... ;) ..

I love the 24-105 - it's sharp, has unparallelled color and contrast but it just ain't long enough at times - and a bit too slow at others...

I had a Tammy 28-75 and now regret selling it...

I just bought a $60 kit lens to see how I get along with the focal lenght to see if a change would be worthwhile - we'll see how that goes.

POTN strikes me as a little strange at times, you hear lots of folks bitching that "Don't ever buy an EF-S lens because it won't fit on full frame/1.3X crop, what if you upgrade some day" and then turn around and recommend 3rd party 1.6X-only lenses. Not like I have anything against the Sigma 30/1.4 but ya think they would be a bit more consistent in their complaining wouldn't ya ;)

I have a 28/1.8 because I am caring for and feeding a FF/1.3X system in addition to a EF-S system. No regrets. The 28 is nice on 1.6X too (45mm slightly-wider-than-standard appeals to me)

EJ.. oh please.... selling the awesome 24-105 for a Tamron or Sigma..

If you want wide try the 17-55/2.8 IS USM - now that is a BEAST of a lens. There is NOTHING that does the job as well. For available-light events coverage that is absolutely the lens to work with.

BTW I don't particularly like the 24-105 on 1.6X crop either.. wide is nowhere near wide enough.

It's either that or upgrade to the 5D, PG and I both use the 24-105 as the bread-n-butter go everywhere do everything zoom and love it to death. The 5D's ISO advantage gives us back the one stop we need, so I can functionally use this lens in a 17-55/2.8 role and get away with it.

I just don't get hung up in the name or things like "build quality". If this was a profession, maybe it would matter, but for me, it's getting the shot I want that matters. The 24-105 excels in certain areas but is lacking in others. Lately the lacking aspect is nagging at me. Plus, I hate having that much money tied up in a single lens when it could almost fund 3 others that I might rather have...

I consider the 28 1.8 as well - have you seen a comparison to the 30? I picked up a 28 2.8 for next to nothing as a normal lens and I like it but the AF is extremely slow - another stop or two wouldn't hurt either.

True, I guess I have been let down hard before. Not to say I didn't want to like the other lenses - who wouldn't? Let's see, similar specs for 1/3rd the price.. what was there not to like? But.. it didn't work out I guess :(

Haven't seen any comparisons, but I was just playing with the little 28 on the 350D and I have been reminded of how awesome a fast 1.8 prime can be. AF is VERY fast thanks to the ultrasonics, in fact, ranks up there with my best. It actually helps the 350D a lot because it provides so much extra light to work with.

IIRC the Sigma 30/1.4's AF performance was very good thanks to the HSM motor. I have a 70-200 zoom and AI Servo with the 1D is just as good as everything I have come to expect from the USM L's, so I have faith in their HSM technology. Ultrasonics (generically referring to both brands/types) are important not only for focus speed, but focus accuracy, the latter carrying extra weight in my eyes. SIlent AF? I could care less, the 35/2 buzzing hornet AFD does not faze me in the least.

PS: Similar specs for 1/2 the price actually did work out for me - got my 70-200/2.8 for less than half of what a Canon would have cost me.

It's not wide enough about 1/3 of the time for me - but a 50mm wouldn't be long enough 1/3 of the time either. A range of 17-75 would probably be about perfect for most situaitions which is why I am entertaining a 17-50 and 85 combo. The long end is mostly for kid stage performances and sports - they are young for now so it's plenty of length and speed for what I need.

F4 is limiting - both from a speed and DOF/bokeh perspective - my Tammy 28-75 was much nicer in this respect.

It's big and heavy - I know, better than the 24-70 but I feel liberated when I have a smaller, lighter, less-imposing lens on the camera...

Expensive for a single lens...

Note, I do love the lens and am not mentioning it's great attrubutes - IS, sharpness, build, AF speed/accuracy, color, contrast, etc.

very true.. and completely fair.. ;) .. Kind of funny don't ya think. How different folk's opinions can be in what is largely about numbers and putting different things together.. In a which lens thread I was reading one poster said to not go above 400ISO. the next reply down somebody said to use 3200... Now, describing the same situation with the same gear two photographers have the opposite opinion.. and they both get the job done and have something to show for it.. Kind of interesting..

Like Petey's penchant for L and Dave's pride in his old school MF glass... there's no real way to completely judge who's choices are better.. I suppose that's where the artist in us comes out. I find nothing wrong with my Tammy I enjoy it completely and i'm thrilled with the photos from it. Other's think that it's under par and that there are a lot better options out there that make the Tammy not worth considering..

But, at the end of the day we all come home with our photos have you noticed how if you have a bad shot with an L it's completely the users fault but if you have a good shot with a third party than the photographer gets all kinds of accolades. 'Photographer triumphs over cheap glass'...

Photography is totally subjective....and the bottom line is....if you are happy with the images produced by your camera and lens combinations, it doesn't matter who manufactured them. There is nothing really wrong with third-party lenses, with a few little caveats. Because they are not endorsed or supported by Canon...every third-party lens is a bit of a compromise...they don't have the same quality of components and technology that Canon can offer on it's own line, the lenses are all reverse engineered, which can lead to a bit of slop in tolerances and in an effort to hold the price to a reasonable level, compromises have to be made in build quality, optical performance and focus speed and accuracy. On top of that, Sigma lenses make the most annoying sound on the face of the planet. That said, I use Tamron TC's.

Nifty is noisy....and 35 may be a buzzsaw...but they still are not as annoying as the Sigma sound...there is just something about the pitch and volume of those things...........makes you want to poke your eyes out.

is it as bad as wool's simga's? and is it nice?..

I like it. At f/2, it's pretty quick, and it has good IQ. I'm no pro or anything, but I like it for walking around, say, Pikes Place, or places like that where I don't want some honkin' lens getting in the way or breaking my neck. On your XT it will crop out close to a 50mm which is good for portraits. I've done some landscape with it, but it's not that wide. Sure, there's other lenses out there that will do better, but it was inexpensive, and the size makes it handy. IMHO. I'll try to see if I can scare up some shots that I took with it, if you want.

f the day we all come home with our photos have you noticed how if you have a bad shot with an L it's completely the users fault but if you have a good shot with a third party than the photographer gets all kinds of accolades. 'Photographer triumphs over cheap glass'...

This is a very good point....had to laugh too because it's TRUE, people do respond this way. And for the record, I have a Tamron 90mm that I wouldn't part with any faster than I'd part with my 24-105L. I LOVE that lens.

35/2 rules! :D

That lens really lets you know when it is working.. I almost bought one, in fact I think one of my earliest posts on POTN was whether I should bring one home. They said yes, but I couldn't find any in stock locally - or even at B&H! So.. I never did own one in the end.

The 35F2 is a fast sharp lens...and the absolute loudest one I've personally ever heard. Buzzsaw doesn't even begin to explain it. Puddle dear, you should post some of your shots from Silver Falls. You used it then and the shots came out quite lovely.

is it as bad as wool's simga's? and is it nice?..

"Nice Shots!" I thought about this lens until my local used equipment dealer came up with a 28 f2.8 for $75 and some unused odds and ends. It's a nice, sharp lens but AF is a little loud and slow - wider but slower than the 35 but a good value purchase for a "normal" view on the world...
