I've got a few good shots from today... now.. first up, some for Sari:
Happily setting off on safari.....

Very well equipped..

http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2356&g2_serialNumber=2
So what's preventing it from getting fixed? If you look in the lower left hand corner you'll see.. a TAIL.
Tail of WHAT?

Hey uhh, did anybody bring the lion bait? ;)
This was actually a very well put together exhibit at the Werribee Open Range Zoo where I was shooting during the afternoon.. very 'safari' feel and reminded me of the little expedition to Africa. I took the 100-400 off to shoot all of these with the standard zoom (17-85). That also explains the glass walls - yes, the front of the jeep is built into the glass. Of course we were in no danger at all. But glass or not, I have never stood a foot from a very sleepy lioness.. ever.

That's a pretty cool exhibit, LS. Cool how they put the jeep in the middle to give the impression of the safari.
And, yes, I agree with you. I wouldn't want to get too close to the lioness either.

Just getting caught up on this thread too:
Manfrotto 679B with a 3229RC2 head. I can't figure out why anyone wants a ball head on a monopod....I can tilt all I want with the pod...no need for anything more than a flip from landscape to portrait.
The choice of pod are probably the only things Wool and I agree on ;)
I am a 679B user as well, but no head. I have a Giottos MH625 quick release plate, which is just a plate - no head functions at all. This enables me to snap the 1-4 off the pod quickly. I tilt the pod too. For flipping between landscape and portrait, I just loosen the tripod collar, and turn the lens in the collar.
That's a pretty cool exhibit, LS. Cool how they put the jeep in the middle to give the impression of the safari.
And, yes, I agree with you. I wouldn't want to get too close to the lioness either.
Yup.. had a great day.. :) (rare, but they are wonderful when they happen :) )
I was standing less than a foot away from her, separated only by the glass.. you can even see where she's drooled on the glass!!
Had one guy comment that was the most awesomely huge zoom he'd ever seen.. he was sooooo taken with it. I'm used to the attention. I suppose that is how we react when we meet the 1200mm f/5.6.
They also run a bus tour, although it was tremendously hard to shoot through the windows since they were horribly coated with dust. Actually, everything is coated in dust. I got the authentic "Africa" experience since AU is in the midst of a drought, and the fine particulate sand was blowing everywhere. Incidentally, for those not acquainted with the country, MOST of AU is the Great Australian Desert. So yes.. it is quite easy to find some fairly hard-core desert around these parts complete with dust and all.
BIG surprise: Negligible impact of dust.. one or two spots more after racking the zoom backwards and forwards the whole darn afternoon. So I think after you 'season' the 1-4, the dust problem goes away.
I still felt a lot more comfortable with my B+W filter on the front, though. Many of the shots were fired straight thru dust clouds.. I lost a couple thanks to the dust, it was that bad. But it was still fun!
They are running the Open Top Vehicle tour - which has no windows. I think I will be back one of these days to take that tour!

Yep....those are ducks...you are good to go.
Was quite surprised to see so many ducks, and so far from water..
Couple of other lessons I learned today - if you are shooting wildlife, even in a zoo, a crop camera is very useful.. Sari - I recommend you keep your XT, it will be VERY useful on that mission. Myself, I would have paired a 5D/24-105 and 30D/1-4.
Here's a plot of the focal lengths I used today:
http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2370&g2_serialNumber=1
All focal lengths are after crop factor has been applied.. so my 100-400 registers as a 160-640. (shorter FLs are my 17-85 in action)
Doubt I could be happy with a dedicated 400mm. I was all over the place, with lots of shots at 300mm, 640mm, and 160mm.

I absolutely plan on keeping the XT and maybe picking up a 20 or 30D for the trip.. I think the crop will work for me.. and I can always go FF when I get back..

Yeah.. just thought I'd whet your appetite for adventure.. myself I'm quite happy to do it all for the price of a $15 zoo admission ticket. :D
When I do go back for the open vehicle tour there won't be any glass between me and them either.. just distance! You probably don't want to be too close to the hungry beasts.......

No worries.. point PG to the thread when she wakes up.. I'll have lots more shots on the way :) used 162 frames today, MOST of them are keepers.. I am so surprised.. maybe I am a little bit more proficient with the hardware than I thought I was..

sari
Definitely. FF is sweet but having a crop camera is tremendously useful for long reach tele work. There's a reason why I invested in a 30D again.. plus the 8MP gives me the freedom to crop, frame, and print big. I can just imagine that some of these would look wonderful on the walls.. and draw the comments from the visitors "You been going on safari?" "Yeah, thirty minutes from the big city on M1" :D

Just spent 7 hours with Microsoft Support, both on the phone and live chat.
Bottom line: Vista works. It screwed up Outlook 2003, so I've been out of the email business since Thursday. It also screwed up Quicken, so I've been out of the business business since then as well.
For some reason, Vista won't let me upgrade to Office 2007. It doesn't recognize the previous installation of Office 2003 as a qualifying product for the upgrade.
The bottom line......Microsoft said, "Sorry." If we ever figure out what the problem is, AND if we consider it a significant enough of a problem to document the solution, we'll let you know. In the meantime, you're just SOL.
I should have listened to you all.
After all the time on the phone, I finally (sort of) figured out what happened to my Outlook and Quicken, and they're working again (turned off User Access Control), but I still can't get Office to upgrade, so I'll stick with 2003, return the software, and buy CF cards. (I have an authorization from Microsoft to return it even though it's opened.)
My mood definitely matches my avatar today. Maybe hugging my Mac will soothe me.

I get this often at work. Some new, flash bang program that will solve all our ills comes down the pipe. "It's been tested and all the bugs have been removed". As soon as it's implemented, it creates more frustration and uses up more labor hours to utilize it. That’s the reason I was given. There were so many compatibility problems not only with third party software, but with MS software as well especially with older office products that integrating it into a large network is just too much work. For me, it doesn’t seem to do anything new or better. Just look prettier but then again, I haven’t played with it long. I’ll just stick with XP I think.

Suddenly XP is my friend. I'm still glad I did it (upgraded). I avoided doing any real work for almost two days. The irony is that I was able to fix my most immediate problems purely by dumb luck. I have Quicken back....that was crucial. I have Outlook 2003 back, and that's important too, but not critical. I have several other machines capable of handling my email.
The tech hinted at the fact that there were 'issues' with the activation codes on some of the Microsoft products since the release of Vista and Office 2007.
I'm sure the geniuses in Redmond are dealing with lots of problems right now.

My stand on Vista is consistent with my position re: Microshaft since Win3.1
I will resist with all my will anything that I feel MS wants me to do. Flat across the board.
I will not use MS browser, I will not be pushed into there firewall, or auto updates, I will not allow "messenger" to run, I will disable "active x" which designed by MS and installed as part of the OS for the sole purpose of enabling spyware and trojans,. etc.
Thus, Vista will only be of interest to me when or if MS stops pushing it on me like a drug dealer.

Na, it learns just fine and adding won't help my problem. There are several words I just keep misspelling like “definitely” and when I look in the option list, it’s not even close in guessing the right. It always pops up defiantly but not definitely. Otherwise, it’s a great browser and I’m sure will get better with the next upgrade.

OK Jake so what should I do? My options for a new Computer for Maureen are:
1. Have Vista Home Premium installed by the builder
or
2. Get it with no OS and get a Full XP Professional from NewEgg and install it myself?
Jon

Won't they still install XP? If not, buy a second, or external HDD from NewEgg and get an OEM copy of XP Pro with it, maybe.

I've been happy with XP Pro on mine, stable as an anvil.
Maureen's has been giving me fits. Still not sure if it is hardware or software but I suspect software. Ours are almost identical.
I have not contacted the builder personally yet for this computer but they only offer Vista on the web site.

Sorry to hear that dude.....man if I were you, diehard "I-will-not-change-my-workflow-even-if-I-am-unfortunate-enough-to-be-wedded-to-Windows" ole me would be stomping into the nearest Apple store and yelling "GIVE IT TO ME"
"What do you want, sir?"
"ANYTHING MAC"
We just this week got a note from out IT folks. They were adamant, no VISTA until it’s bugs were ironed out. I was talking to one of the IT guys and he said that they have been testing it for several weeks and found it too buggy for mass deployment. After hearing several other upgrade horror stories, I think I'll wait until I have to upgrade.
I am one of those IT folks. I suddenly feel like the MIB.. Defending the Network from WhatEverTheHeckIsOutThere!
Just give me an OS that lets my programs run. Firefox, Thunderbird, Powerdesk Pro, any of the photo editors....and Office 97...
Add Garmin Mapsource, my legacy handcoded Win32 apps that I have neither time to port or rewrite, WinAMP (this one being particularly crucial), Eudora, and my multi-timezone clock. For everything else, I have a replacement either in open source or on a different platform. Unfortunately these few apps are the ones that I am both unable and unwilling to replace, and I'm not willing to run them in emulation - either we break clean or.. well.. wait. Till push comes to shove.
BTW, consider Openoffice (www.openoffice.org). MS crazy licensing over Office nailed me pretty bad, and the worst part, I wasn't allowed to return it because I'd opened the box. The problem is: the license was INSIDE the box.. so how would I know I had gotten the wrong license by mistake.. till I open it?
However, Tommy's recommendation of VMWare Server is very interesting.. that means I can run a UNIX/Linux box as my primary and virtualize XP or 2K (which is fine, and I have old licenses for the full version.. and I happen to really like 2K. I bought a few when they rushed to dump it in favor of the 'latest and greatest').

Hunting is a function of the camera not finding sufficient contrast in the subject to lock on..I can make ANYTHING hunt by pointing it at nothing but solid blue sky.. so.. don't worry about it. (if you're going to test gear, know how to do it properly)
Post some pics.. there is a reason why I'm recommending the 300 for folks like us who love IS.
Yesterday I realized how hard it is to handhold 640mm. Even with good technique you can clearly see the drift in the viewfinder - but at the same time if your shutter speed is high enough it won't affect the image. Turning IS on however, makes a HUGE difference, even the older 2-stop IS. But technique matters so much.. I had to force myself to use proper long lens technique instead of my 'anyhow works' 24-105 bright light technique ;)
It's not 'hard' per se but you do have to concentrate a little bit more than just wander around pointing and shooting.

Heya folks....just thought of something I wanted to ask.
I got one of those headaches again after running around the zoo for a few hours in the afternoon with all the gear and stuff.. it was 32degC (nearly 90F), and the sun was pretty strong. Came back and my head started to hurt. This isn't the first time it's happened, but I notice it does happen when the temperature is over 30, when I'm exerting myself outdoors in the sun - any insight into what causes the headache?
Had a hat and shades on as well.. so we can rule those out.

I had this one guy who wanted to come but didn't have equipment. I loaned him my canteen and he fill it with beer. I didn't know that he had done so and about midway, he became ill. I though he was dehydrated and tried to give him a drink from his canteen when I noticed the smell. I had actually noticed it earlier but just a whiff and never figured that anyone would be silly enough to exchange water for beer on a hike. We ended up leaving him at a ranger station and hiked back to the car to pick him up. What a knuckle head...

LISA!! I think you should go for the 400.. use a monopod and have a great time!!
Thanks all.. apparently I didn't drink enough - I had a bit of water, but the head says otherwise.
I never realized the impact of this problem.. in fact it goes all the way back to my school days, there was one incident where I was running a mile and a half and didn't make it to the finish line, I was throwing up but nothing came up. Plus headache and all. Nobody, even the teachers, were clueful enough to tell me what the problem was.. they simply said I was a wimp and I basically figured that I didn't take it well.. and we left it at that.
It was only yesterday that I realized.. hey.. this feels a lot like the hangover headache. Now, I know a few things about drink of the other kind, including the scientific explanation as to what causes it (dehydration sucks water from your brain), and the not-so-scientific fix (drink half a gallon before going to bed after a night on the town).. the only thing missing was the drink, of both kinds.
There were a couple of other indicators to show that I was indeed dehydrated, so I think that was the explanation. Thanks for the education.. I'll be more careful. These are the hot, hot days of summer over here. Maybe time to buy the Lowepro bottle bag because it sliplocks nicely onto one of my Domke's metal hardpoints on the side.
Nice beer story.. talk about a double whammy!

The moment the light drops below less than perfect you're going to get shake. The 300/4 interoperates well with a 1.4X TC (can't speak for the 2X), it's fast focusing, it's sharp, CA free..
I mean, I've been talkin', but I ain't so sure there's been listenin'

About two years ago I took my niece to the waterpark in July.. at the time her mom was a smoker so she got out of the water every forty-five minutes or so to smoke and take a break..
I had Abby-girl all day. and a five year old will stop long enough to take a drink themselves, and put on more sunscreen. we were there for six hours and I felt tired enough that I just went to bed. The next day I felt almost like a hangover for most of the day.. and then my relief was two hours late for work.. About an hour before my shift was up the cook told me that I looked a little bit green I told him that he was annoying and he shouldn't tell a woman that she doesn't look good...  .. and then I passed out.
I remember reaching for a Long Island to set down at a table and the next thing I know my big old cook had me in the office and was calling his wife to come take me home. It took me about three days until I felt like I could stand up for more than twenty minutes. and to this day is one of the most embarrassing things i've ever done at a job. Drink a LOT of water. you should have to take a bathroom break every other hour or so.. if you don't then you're not drinking enough..

300 IS Perm. If you don't go for the 100-400 that is. There are lots of good ones out there.

Well, in my studies, a person should drink up to seven to eight gallons an hour. If a person doesn't slosh when walking, and doesn't require to use the "facilities" every five minutes, well, then they're taking their live in their hands....
Sari's right. Even if you don't think you need water, you should have some. Some docs say that 3-4 liters a day.

I'm really keen on taking their open vehicle tour. This vehicle was really hard to shoot from with very small windows, most of which could not be opened. We passed by one of the open vehicles.. it's just a frame and seats and complete freedom to aim the long lenses.. :)
PG.. I don't mean to make your decision harder but it also convinced me that while the 400mm is a LITTLE bit sharper when pixel peeped, there is no way I could be happy with a fixed FL..
Also my dust problem seems to have settled down once the 100-400's been properly broken in. I took dust baseline images after cleaning the 30D, before I went on the shoot, and the 'after' images show only 2 more spots, which is really not bad considering I was shovelling the 1-4 back and forth in very fine blowing dust that got everywhere.. when you close your mouth you can feel it. I did not change lenses however.. if I was on an extended shoot rather than just a fun daytrip, I'd have the 5D and 24-105 mounted for WA/std zoom cover.. eliminating the need to change lenses.
Quite a surprise considering that halfway through the trip, looking at my 30D slicked with a fine coat of red dust, I was expecting to have to vacuum out the sensor and mirror box! So that's my theory.. that the 1-4 is stirring dust inside the camera. I used the blower on the 30D prior to setting out and after when I got back.

Yoda failed to mention the goose pen being atop a nuclear waste facility...you should see the neat green glow those geese have at night.

I'm not going going to buy another 1-4. I hated that lens. I KNOW that there are good ones out there, obviously yours, Blonde's, Cat's have all been proven and Sari's new one looks good but there are SO many that aren't...just don't want to do it again. Plus, I hated the push/pull (and the dust, though I did notice I had less trouble with dust after the first month or so...who knows why).
