For $75 I would think you could do loud and slow for sharp images.

for $75 I would definately do loud and slow.. as long as it was sharp!!..

Here is another ice shot for you to ponder. "Dragon's Breath"
http://www.pbase.com/woolburr/image/71000208.jpg

Can you find the dragon?

Yes, head at the top breathing yellow fire with body wrapped around the left side of the frame, coming down in a curve around the bottom. Did I get it right?

Damn Wool, you create ART, the rest of us take pics.

Yeah, I like mine too...sometimes even the best mattress cannot help a mind diseased...

That's the job of the drink ;) (then the mattress gives you a nice place to crash)

"Nice Shots!" I thought about this lens until my local used equipment dealer came up with a 28 f2.8 for $75 and some unused odds and ends. It's a nice, sharp lens but AF is a little loud and slow - wider but slower than the 35 but a good value purchase for a "normal" view on the world...

For $75 I would buy it. I did not like the 50/1.8 due to inaccurate AF and HORRIBLE CA wide open, but this really sounds like good value. A 1.8 version with the fancy ultrasonics will run you substantially more than this.

28's slightly-wider-than-normal, 35 is slightly-longer-than-normal, but it's all close enough really. We're talking a couple degrees FOV difference.

puddle... nice waterfall shots! Very inspiring.. I was planning to go off and take pics of a waterfall this weekend but then something came up :( I will have to see whether I can ram it in somehow...

My digital archiving strategy is to ensure I have enough storage IN the computer to house all the photos online, so I can dig through them quickly, which I often do. Then it's all backed up elsewhere. The full archive always sits on the hard disk ready to go at a moment's notice.

See, if you back up your images to some external device/media then delete them off the hard disk, you have no backup. Because your ext device/media has now become the primary source of the photos, and if that goes.. oops.. best I can do is wipe your tears and tell you to shoot more photos (I do that for users at work who screw up their backups) and that's only if I like the user in question.... otherwise I tell them to go get drunk ;)

Amazing as it seems, I use Canon's Zoombrowser EX for downloading and previewing (because it is the ONLY utility that gives me full EXIF and focus point overlay). Images are sorted by year and by date with a name.. the lazy part is where I forget to tag by name. ZBEX creates folders/directories with the date portion for me, automatically based on the shooting date. So if I go on a shoot spanning two days and come back and download, it'll split 'em up for me.

Looks like an interesting day around here: the merits of doing loud and slow, enjoyable photos, Wool getting too serious then chasing the dragon. . . . Long day at work but a small reward when day was done. Got to watch a bald eagle take a slow flight across campus- of course, I didn't take my camera in today. Good thing really, what with the fall as soon as I emerged from the house. The 30D and sundry would have been dust!
Have a lovely weekend, all. Hope everyone (including me) gets some good sleep!

I like it - sharp is relative, you know...sharper than the kit not quite as sharp as the 50 1.8 at 2.8 - sharpens up a bit at 4 and 5.6, though - but I just wanted normal lens to kick around with and see how I like it. I bought that and the kit to experiment with for a while to see if I could live without the 24-105 focal length-wise... of course the AF is a killer for people shots after getting spoiled on the 24-105...

Nothing like gin...you get 2 cards dealt to you....followed by 4 cards in common....called the flop....then 1 more common card called the turn and finally the last common card called the river. You need to have a pair right off the bat to even think about staying for the flop....unless you are one hell of a bluffer. Then there is the matter of the big blind and the small blind....we are talking lots of money in one of these games....not a real good place for a beginner to jump in....you might want to watch for a while...

Hmm... the best laid plans of mice and men.

I'd planned to hike a waterfall this weekend but something else came up which delayed my trip long enough to scrub (wouldn't be able to get there and back in time), so I went into the Big City instead.. (risking hideous parking fines and all with their byzantine maze of parking lots, timed/untimed zones/meters that eat your money without spewing a ticket).. quite an adventure!

On the plus side I never did get ticketed... phew.

I met a sweet looking chick at the camera shop...
.. who owns the 70-200/4 ISL...

.. who shoots a 5D and 24-105.. (I guessed it.. when she said 5D and 724, I figured it would be a 24-105 as standard zoom.. the match made in heaven for FF shooters)

... suddenly we almost forget the main purpose of the mission is to go and check out the lens.. ;) So pleasant to talk to a photog who knows what they are doing.

Shot the 4 and the 2.8 versions.. surprisingly, the 2.8 is not as heavy as I remember. Maybe I am finally getting used to the weight? The STRANGEST part: the Canon 2.8 ISL version seems to feel lighter than the Sigma. I know this is not true! 1250gm for the Sigma and 1480 for the Canon - this is really wierd.

I think I have it all figured out. The US pricing of the 4 ISL is ridiculous.. and I called it ridiculous. However, locally, the lens is a much better deal both here and at home. The 4 ISL is priced closer to the 70-300 IS, and our 2.8 ISL is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive. Think $2500 USD for the 2.8!!

So the 4 makes sense.. I am not coughing up an extra thousand bucks for one more stop, who am I, freaking NUTS? Nuts maybe, stupid no..

Flying the 2.8 in from the US doesn't help either, we get socked with taxes and exchange rates. I laid it all out nicely in a spreadsheet (toldja I was nuts) and our total cost of ownership still favors the f/4 version by at least US$500. Yes.. I was shocked by how the numbers work out, but that's exactly why I laid it out in a spreadsheet where I can analyze the formulas and get a computer to crunch the data so operator error is reduced. (BTW: For those of you who are not big fans of MS Office, try OpenOffice.. *very* credible offering even by my harsh standards. Works on MacOS X, FreeBSD, Linux, Windows, you name it.)

On my way back I saw two wedding shooters at work with a video crew. Guess what telephoto they were using...

75-300 USM and 75-300 IS (legacy version with silver stabilizer nameplate, not the current @sskicking 7-3 IS). YIKES. I know one should not judge one by the gear, but I also happen to know it is VERY VERY difficult to get a good image out of those two lenses. You *ABSOLUTELY* need to nail everything first pass AND spend time in Photoshop. Beentheredoneit, you can WRING a good image from the lens, but it takes a lot of wringing. I would worry...

And there was absolutely no need to do that.. the legacy 75-300 IS used to cost as much as a 70-200 f/4L non-IS, and as I said back in those days (before the 70-300 IS was launched), IS + crap quality vs 724 no IS and superb imaging performance for similar pricing - give me the 724 ANY DAY. (I know when to sacrifice thy IS)

To each their own I guess, but still.. clients can be very demanding.

Wool....how would you go about asking? Let's see, she's working, I'm asking about a lens.. how would you go about bringing it up without being cased with a 7-2/2.8 ISL? (although that is not so bad.. but the lens hurts)

I've had enough bad experiences being told "WTF" to my face, getting cut off, and/or later finding out they are already attached..

I got eight numbers and those are the price tags of the 724 and 2.8..

After a while...you realize that the absolute worst thing she can say to you is..."I'm not interested"....

I'd say..."Thanks for all the help and insight, can I buy you a cup of coffee after work?"

This could work out to be a $150 cup of coffee (on my tab). Go back, buy the lens and talk to her again... (instead of buying it where it's cheapest)

You know.. I admit.. I am a loser when it comes to this...

I gave up a few years ago when the skills weren't all there and now that I find I need 'em - they're not there. I have NO problems working on a professional level (can talk to anybody about anything) but personal... oh damn me....

Just go and have fun - join in if you feel comfortable ;)

well i'm home.. the boys started making all kinds of noises when I got a royal flush something or other.. and four eight's is unusual?... The betting is the trickiest part.. and hey, I managed to kick chef out so that was a feather in my cap and lots of ammunition for tomorrow..

But, then Marvin and Mackenzie said that I was bluffing and I must have played poker before and playing the 'sweet girl' card is gonna get me in trouble..  .. all in all felt a little outnumbered.

Six guys and me.. but, I had a good time and came in third place so that's not sooo bad.. and Jason wouldn't let them get too rowdy and he made Patrick take down some photo that was on the computer screen?.. (apparently I couldn't see it).. oh well, fascinating experience and I took some photos of the cards and chips on the table... that was fun... and listened to some bad music from a band that was popular in '83... I was a year in '83 I shouldn't be expected to know it... :p .. okay, really time for bed. I think I will go hang out with the boys' poker parties more often.. Jeez I even drank beer.... :D

May I remind you that I've never picked up on a lady before.....sheeesh...

and that I'm playing scrabble too! STILL!

I am going to let my patented smart a$$ remark about that situation just slide right on out of sight. Happy Scrabbling! I need a nap...catch you later. :D

It was very good of you to restrain yourself whilst I was otherwise distracted :)
Happy napping!

Anything else?

Well first, we're all PULLING for Yoda to have good luck with the young lady.

Other than that....
I lost at scrabble and am not the best person to ask how to get a girl (sadly enough, neither is my husband)....and Wu fell down a seven foot flight of stairs...(perhaps I should have put that before me since injury was involved...) Haven't seen Liza in ages, hope she's fine...

what did you do today?

I'm back. Had trouble with my phone so my internet has been down. I've been experiencing withdrawal! Now I need to go back about 10 pages to catch up.

Is Wu okay?

She said she's got bumps and bruises but it could be worse...I hope she wasn't just putting a brave face on it...sounds like a horrid fall.

Glad you are back...we needed a clear head (for poor lightstream) besides Wool that is.

I'm just clicking off for bed....glad you are all right though....wuz worryin'
