I actually know a couple of females that enjoy shooting....and not cameras.
I like shooting both cameras and handguns. Used to work for a police department and had to be proficient with a weapon.
Guess I just never met the right women, thus I had to play with boys.
Same here. And I still prefer male playmates. ;)
She said she's got bumps and bruises but it could be worse...I hope she wasn't just putting a brave face on it...sounds like a horrid fall.
Glad you are back...we needed a clear head (for poor lightstream) besides Wool that is.
I'm just clicking off for bed....glad you are all right though....wuz worryin'
Thanks, but no need to worry. I've also been putting in a lot of 20 hour days with this photography business and the teaching, too. It wears me out. As for Lightstream, the best advice I could give is for him to just be himself. Ultimately, that's what she'll fall in love with. :)

back from my nap. that was a good one. got a few hours in this time! Is it just us here now?
Yes, much prefer male palymates. They have the best toys! ;)
Those are long days. I am so glad the semester is over. It has been a long one here, too and without the photography. I really needed to write but only got a book proposal in and one article. just can't concentrate.
I really am just bruised from the fall. No hip breakage yet.

I'm not sure, but it might be just us. I'm going to go back to bed in a few minutes. I'm starting to nod off again.
I agree about them having the best toys, although there's some variance from playmate to playmate. ;)
Glad to hear you're okay and suffered no permanent damage in the fall. I can definitely relate. I'm a pratfall waiting to happen. :)
I'd better get back to bed. Chat later!

Does that make you a dumb cluck?
Let a little of that self-confidence from work carry over to your private times...does wonders for you.
Yes it does! King Chickens|-|i+ is in da h0use! There are VERY few things that scare me like this, but...
Must....control....adrenalin...overdose....
Wow, you really know how to talk me into that though..
the worst thing that can happen is No. then what are you going to do, look embrassed by it. why you have shown interest in someone you like. everyone does at some point in their life. You just know that she isn't the one for you.
If you both make eye contact and it you stay connected for more than a 1sec, your in. trust your gut. Just don't let the butterfly's tell ya what to do.
ok.. some very good points about the eye contact here. The butterflies are definitely going on an overdrive stampede here.
Hey, Lightstream, this always works. 1. Don't shower for a week. 2. Dress in some dead animal fur. 3. Club her over the head. 4. Drag her to your cave. It's a DATE! See? That always worked for me when I was a kid. Go for it, Big Guy. Try it out. Trust me, chicks dig a guy that throws the Neanderthal card.
If I do that I might not be able to live with ME for a week ;) the shower part especially... :D
by the way....what happened to Lightstream?
Did he leave us in disgust?
No, not at all. I mentioned earlier that I was bailing out to go to a dinner with some family friends. Good thing too; helps me take my mind off the adrenalin supercharge that is making me jump up and down like a spider on a hotplate...

Meantime I'm reaching for the scotch... I'm horrible.. I pre-loaded the bottle with one of those quick-pour attachments that precisely meters 30ml (Sari would know about these) the kind they use in pubs.. and I'm making it a double...

Shy? You're the last person I would have assumed would be that.... (I am, surprisingly!)
Yes.. you're right about not overthinking it. I certainly AM doing that (must keep calm.. OMMMM......)
Thanks for the encouragement. I work communications, and despite all the ultra high tech multi-gigabit fiber optic, wireless radio, wave division multiplexing links we have today, sometimes, it can seem almost impossible to bridge the distance between two people who are standing next to each other.

When I had crushes as a teen I'd admire at a distance.Safer that way.hehe Then I'd tell the guy I liked him so I could get the "I like you as a friend" speech over with. lol
I was an extremely late bloomer. Guys always saw me as a mate only, so I don't have a problem hanging out with them. When it's dating I'm a chicken and/or too cautious. I'm not one to go up & hit on a man. It's easier to just have it be a friends thing. I've asked maybe two men out in my adult life & boy was I nervous!

Thanks.. I feel a bit better knowing it's not just me. I am also one of those who came into their own very late in life.
VERRRRRRRRRRRRRY long distance for me too..... can't spot me with the 100-400, try the 1200 with TC instead.
You should hear my misadventures in this department. I learned the "anything you say can and will be used against you" quote during some of these. Someone whom I THOUGHT was a friend of mine wrung the confession out of me, told the girl, who gave me the stay the hell away from me you idiot line.
This, plus many other incidents..
Sorta reminds me of a recent conversation I had with someone I know..
Them: "Don't build fences around.." *I cut them off*
Me: "I don't build fences, I build rocket turrets to take 'em out before they get in range."
(extra 100 geek points to whoever knows specifically what the R-turrets refer to.. :D but even if you don't, the generic interpretation of long ranged guided defenses is fine)

Okay here ya go...just a few while I'm playing scrabble...
"Apart from being sexy, what do you do for a living"
"Man if sexy is a crime, you'd be guilty as charged"
"If I could rearrange the alphabet I'd put U and I together"
oh and on a more personal note:
"Are you a parking ticket? because you have fine written all over you"
and my personal favorite
"Can I borrow a quarter, because I want to call your mom and thank her...."
Oh RIGHT!!!
Tell her that she was so persuasive yesterday you thought you'd give her another opportunity to make the sale...then get her talking about her about her interest in photography, then buy the lens and ask her to coffee...
okay the first one.. bad.. I wouldn't go for a one of those in a million years.. the second one might just get her sitting in front of you drinking a mocha... by the way little annoyed that I slept through the 'giving advice on picking up a woman' conversation.... .. i'm a woman and can tell you what is fairly effective. here ya go..
don't put her in the spotlight.. Men get slaps on the back when they get picked up in front of family/ coworkers/ friends.. Women get warnings and every doubt about his character thrown at her.. (you don't need that kind of competition my friend)..
Be honest. Don't buy something just for an excuse to ask her out. You can use a kind of conversation starter like 'let's talk gear over coffee'.. But, do the apologizing half smile thing within ten minutes and admit that your real motivation was to get to know her.. Women like to know where they stand.. the guessing why he's inviting me out could get you struck out because were suspicious creatures and don't like not knowing what the reason is...
Don't be too forthcoming. If you want two kids in the next four years.. Great goal. good for you.. But, just like men women don't like knowing too much.. Do not list every ex-wife or girlfriend on the basis of 'keeping yourself real' If you have a broken heart, cheating ex, long ago drug addiction, whatever... don't introduce them right away..
Don't forget your manners. A woman won't really notice that you didn't pay for coffee open the door or take off your hat.. But, they will notice when you do.
blah blah.. it's late but I didn't want to miss out on the handing out of advice completely...
good morning all!...:D

I hate those things... seriously hate them.. especially in scotch whisky bottles they get old and sticky and the little balls get stuck.. Just count to three Up bottle one.... two... raise bottle three..... bring bottle down... perfect shot everytime... ;) .. or count fingers. two fingers is a shot, three fingers is a double but it does depend on the kind of bucket used... I have about two years.. but strangely enough I kind of like my apartment life.. Ofcourse the majority around are men... and not a one of them i'd be interested in.. all nice buddies and my next door neighbor is a sous chef.. (no complaints about that).. But, the idea of bothering with dating just kind of makes me tired and think about curling up with a blanket and a book.. Is there anything I hate more than a first date?... but, I have a bad track record.. (still smarting over that falling down the stairs in the parking garage episode...:o ).. Nope not for me... not right now..
Oh that reminds me.. a word of caution to LS.. if I were to get asked out right now i'd probably turn just about anybody down.. Would have nothing to do with the guy or his motivations or anything like that... sometimes women just plain aren't interested and it has nothing to do with the person....

Some very good comments.. I can definitely relate to your experiences, in fact, on the way home just now I figured it would be easier if we just scrub the mission, forget this ever happened, go home and buy my 724ISL from the blokes whom I have absolutely NO incentive to pick up ;)
Then I can go back to carping on POTN and taking duck shots... book & blanket = old familiar comfortable stuff.. and I can definitely relate to that!

okay... that doesn't sound soo great.. nope. no scrubbing neccessary go for broke and see what happens.. On the flipside the best times were when I just went with the flow and gave anything that came my way a try. Maybe we should all re-evaluate atleast every once in awhile...

Right on, ghurl........emotional attachments lead to nothing but trouble....take it from an old dried up man. See what happened to me and "Lisa".....she looked so good on the outside, I had such high hopes for us:cry: . Then, "POOF" and all was gone in an instant. However, we must remember what !Kung elders say...." Only a Jumanju can continue the path of a Jumanju, for only Jumanjus know where water laden tubers can be found."
Thus, guided by Kalahari folk wisdom, as I have always done in critical, turning moments of my life, I am planning to get another "Lisa"....much younger and vestal virgin unspoilt....that ought to asuage this old torchured heart of mine.

oh Pete.. darlin' now our concerns are different.. I'm avoiding emotional attachments with human beings.. you know those people sometimes behind the camera or in front of the camera.. you however are speaking of a lens.. those things attached to a camera.. You do know a camera don't you most of the time they are black square like objects they only respond to you if their batteries are charged and have absolutely no loyalty.. they will turn on and off to whoever pushes the button... but as much as I enjoy a piece of glass.. there's just no chance of a broken heart for me.. but, if your Lisa has given you sooo much pain you can just mail her on over to me.. ;) :p .

I hear you, Woo Wee woman, however, take a look at it from a practical point of view....a sharp lens can be used to capture reality softly. However, a soft image from the camera can never be restored to the original subject's clarity and detail.

I think Connie boy does understand all that rather well in principle.....however, it is kinda difficult practicing sharp photography using soft "classics".
I am confident that some day soon, he shall finally transcend his smallish lenticular phobias;) and avail himself to lenses which are best suited for his application. Thereby the photo gear chains and mores which had kept his photographic expression grounded will be broken, and new Connie the Photographer will bLoom and spread his creative wings.

In all fairness the buying of a drink under some circumstances is a date.. or atleast a prelude to a date.. However considering that my present occupation is in the adult beverage consumption business... the buying and selling of alcohol for me atleast has a different meaning... ;) ;) ..

I have a couple interested right now. One is a baker, of all things, and the other is a construction worker. Both are nice guys, live locally, and are around my age. I'm supposed to meet the construction worker next Friday at a basketball game, so that should be interesting. No, it bypassed us almost completely. We got quite a bit of rain that later froze on the roads in spots and lots of strong wind, but no snow. I'm glad, because I don't have the blade on the tractor yet. One of my students did contact me offering to plow the drive if the weather ever gets bad. I thought that was nice.
And, Wu, I understand what you mean. I have the whole weekend without kids and I'm sitting in front of this damned computer once again. Neither of my man friends is available this weekend, as both had to work.

I'd have a really hard time dealing with that. My son Chris taught middle school and the things he saw and heard broke my heart. He also kept a supply stashed in his office, etc. to help out. Some things he just couldn't do much of anything about. Even reports to authorities were slow to be acted upon.
I generally feed each of my classes once a semester- donuts and fruit for big classes, pizza or better breakfast for others. sometimes we potluck. This year I have been a slacker though. I no longer walk past the bakery or grocer on my way to school and just too lazy to walk there and back for an early class. Several times this semester some of my long time followers have surprised me with rolls, breakfast burritos, LifeWater, . . . . Some folks seem to think I need a keeper. gotta love 'em!

My students are the poorest of the poor, and that probably is one of the factors for their inclusion in special education. Not only do I feed them, I try to get clothing donations and tap into community resources for other needs. One very sweet child hadn't had a new pair of shoes since 7th grade. Since she's now a sophomore, I dug deep into my pockets to get her a new pair and arranged for the Booster Club to take her shopping for clothing for the upcoming chorus Xmas concert. Prom time is fun for us. We always manage to find prom dresses and funding for tuxes for the kids, so they look just like everyone else at the dance.

My first year here I had my students doing service projects (wasn't at all popular with my chair), but we did some good and the students learned a lot. One thing one class did was a formals collection- got quite a few great prom dresses. Worked with a local civic organization and we were able to get a lot of girls outfitted for prom who'd have not had a way to get the things otherwise. We also did spring food drives, etc. Students found it rewarding, we helped the community, and they learned a lot about sociology and social change. I can't wait to et to a place where community action and service learning are an accepted part of the culture of the school!
Even my visual soc had to be put on hold so we aren't getting the stories about community and lives out for people to see anymore.

We have a number of service organizations here at the school in which students participate. It's important for them to become involved when they're young, as it seems to continue on once they are out of school. Don't know why the department chair would object, though. That's just part of learning about civic duty and seeing first hand how the other half lives.

But isn't the US 'system' in particular built on 'economic growth' and through loans they can never repay and the stripping of developing country assets actually making those people dependant ... or is this politics and so not to be discussed?
