I've heard tell that Photoshop has some of these features....but since I don't use it much...I can't verify that. I started using Paint Shop Pro way back in the funny days...have stuck with it for the most part. It is so much faster and easier than Photoshop for basic editing, cropping and resizing...that I just automatically turn it on.

Never used it. I don't do much "effect wise" with my photos...I edit them, but not spectacularly. I might have to try sometime though...maybe with real fireworks :)

Ah yes, that was the big main reason. On top of that, Corel was so anal they refused to allow web sales with digital downloads (you don't even have to DELIVER the damned thing) to international users. Oh great.. you have a willing buyer who's told he can't buy because he's overseas.

It is quiet. I visited a tourist trap today, it was hopeless. And horribly touristy. I hate that. Great Ocean Road was awesome because it is basically what nature gives you, as is, apart from some boardwalks and roads into the area.
Knowing Photoshop is useful if you are going to work for an employer whose workflow is based around PS, however it is assuredly NOT the only image editor available. Besides, how many of us are going to make this our day job?
RAW vs JPEG is another favorite argument.
I would say that in the end, savvy professionals (speaking from day job, different technology but same 'solutions' mentality applies) use whatever it takes to get the job done, and whatever is the most appropriate technology.
I am framing A4 prints as surprise Christmas gifts for some good folks. I picked three of my top favorite images. Two were shot RAW, one was shot JPEG. ALL look bloody awesome.. you can't actually tell when it's dumped onto print. I wouldn't give them away lightly unless I thought them worthy of being hung on a wall somewhere too.

I just can't stand it when the person behind me is saying (often at the top of their voices as if their companion and the rest of *Nebraska must be hearing impared) "oh just wait until..." or "did you hear that"....or whatever, did I mention "at the top of their voice"...while the person next to me is answering their cell phone or pager or whatever...and the children in front of me are standing on the seats, blocking views or some renegade teenagers are seeing who can be the most disruptive before the attendants will be forced to evict them.....
(obviously I have strong views about watching movies in the privacy of my own home)

The text is a little different, I was trying out different labelling and seeing how it works. Think I will standardize on #2 and #3 in future.
The loss of contrast is because the frames are glass and they are not antiglare/antireflective multicoated. This is what CHEAP filters will do to your lens..I am a filter guy, but I use the premium multicoated stuff and suffer no loss of IQ. (24-105 and 17-40 need filters for full environmental seals anyway, as per Canon's instructions).

I like #3 too.. may go with that moving forward.
Your photos are great.. I am really sure some of them would look stunning in print. The key thing is to use premium Canon paper and real Canon ink on their inkjets. Anything else is a compromise, and it WILL look wierd. I can even tell the diff between Canon's not-so-good paper and their top of the line. I use the cheap stuff for proofing or 4x6"s, and the color rendition *IS* different (even though the inkjet is the same). Use Photo Paper Pro. When Canon's own lab does it (on inkjet - i9950 A3), that's the good stuff they use. Get us to C&C first. Those winter photos I PM'ed you about - I think those would look magnificent in 8x12".
Use something good like the IP6600D 6-ink printer. There are some who bitch and whine that it is cheaper if you go to a shop.. sorry, I like full control over my output. If it's gonna be botched up *I* want to be the one who screws it up.
(US users: A4 paper size is close to 8x12").
Canon's Chromalife100 papers and inks are supposed to last (in accelerated aging tests) for at least 30 years without degradation when framed behind plain glass like this. Well.. if I swing by in 30 years time and the pix are still there we will know.
If not - that's the magic of digital - I'll grab whatever's good at the time and re-print 'em ;)
Your pics look like they came out very well Yoda...thumbs up dood!

Ah...here's where the digital trickery comes in. Normally, you'd get a mat, and then mount the photo, and so on.. if you look very very close you will notice the 'zeroing' on one of the pictures is not 100% there, but close enough.
I start with PS Elements, create a new image, set paper size and set DPI to 300 (or more, if you can spare). I then position the lettering and my tag, and instead of the photo I draw a black rectangle and print this out in lowest quality on plain white paper. This is my calibration target.
Then I sandwich the target in between the glass and the cardboard backing of the frame, put it all back together and see whether it's aligned. If not, I make slight changes and do it till I get the results I want.
Then, I paste the photo over the rectangle, align it, size it, etc. then delete the layer with the rectangle. Final check - then load the premium paper and fire. All of it is printed in one single A4 page including the whitespace.

Smart!
(I just looked and the largest mine will do is 8.5 x 11). I suppose I should know this but what is A4?
Internationally used paper size. A1, A2, A3, A4. Functionally equivalent to letter paper. Our printers are designed for A4, yours for letter. Where I mention A4, you substitute your letter paper size.
The trick is to get a letter-paper-sized frame (I got A4). I am quite sure if you scout around various places you'll find them. I got mine at an art supply shop, and you know, I really never thought of myself as the artistic type.. there I am standing amongst all the paints, brushes, and arty type supplies - never thought I'd see the day.. :D but then again.. this is a form of graphic art.. although my paints come in nice sealed little plastic containers with Canon markings..
Zeroing the printer is a trick I learned from work so many years ago...
I just checked up on your MP950 (in your gearlist). That is quite a formidable printer using the same ink cartridge system as mine.. you should be able to get exactly these results.
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelTechSpecsAct&fcategoryid=116&modelid=12077
Only diff is that you have one PGI-5BK high-cap black cartridge, which I don't have. I don't think it's used for photo printing, more for the black and white everyday stuff.
Get some Canon Photo Paper Pro. When you print, your printer should allow you to select the media type, set Photo Paper Pro. This is IMPORTANT, as the printer uses different profiles depending on media. I can't tell you exactly where it is on a Mac since I am a Windows/UNIX user (and we hardly EVER print from UNIX anyway)
PS: the tag is done using a Wacom Graphire4 digitizer tablet (comes with PSE3.0 for Windows) and it is my own handwriting. The first photo has a hand-signed tag because I made the mistake of printing out the photo without the tag and didn't want to destroy a perfectly useable photo. I have one small minor reservation about signing directly on the thing with a pen because I don't know how the chemistry of the ink in the pen will react with the paper over many years, however, this is just one small corner so it should be OK.

Hahhaa.. actually to be honest I am not a true blue Aussie. Not saying that in response to your comment but I am only going to be here for a while (maybe another year or so till work takes me home), so I took the opportunity to take pics. It has lots of nice scenery...
PG: The other thing is.. I never believed inkjets could render this kind of quality. Ever. I have worked with them since as early as 1994, when the damned things cost a fortune, were slow as crap, and output was horrible. I remember an early experience printing a full page A4 color image.. it took all of 45 minutes. No kidding. We wouldn't even sit there, we'd fire, look at the clock, and forget it for the better part of an hour. And of course on plain paper, the results were even worse. Just absolutely terrible.
Inkjets were also extremely prone to 'bleeding' where text characters take on fuzzy edges after a few prints as the heads wear down. It usually happened very, very fast. I switched to laser printers around '97 for my own work.. it was heaven. For black and white business printing there is absolutely NOTHING like a laser, and I owned 3 since that time.
However, Canon was offering gear owners (as a fringe benefit probably) the use of their lab with shockingly cheap 16x20" (approximately A3) inkjet prints. Think.. $4 a print. OK.. at that price NOTHING in town comes close. The local lab wants FIFTY BUCKS for that size. What do I have to lose?
So I wander on down to the lab with 350D in hand, they take my card, and we sit down next to an i9950 inkjet. Hahahaha... inkjet.
After the print comes out of the inkjet I have no more comment.. I have shut up since then.. ;)
I did observe what they used and all they did.. it was really quite simple. I am impressed. The only disadvantage compared to silver halide prints is that these are NOT waterproof, but put it this way: weather sealing is needed on gear when out acquiring the pics, not in the frame when they are being hung indoors ;)

Silvan Reservoir as seen from Mt Dandenong:
http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1673&g2_serialNumber=2
This is what you get trying to shoot through 5km of atmospheric air that is not all that clear. However it was a nice scene there in person. 220mm (full frame) using 100-400.
BTW Claire, if you're interested in knowing, Mount Dandenong is a pretty hardcore tourist trap in Melbourne, Australia... at least that is the impression I got driving through it. All sorts of shops catering to the tourists and the high (or low) point of my day was paying $4 to check out an attraction called "Sky high at Mt Dandenong" which was hopeless. Basically, they've converted a high point on the mountain into an observation deck but really more for a bistro/restaurant/garden/maze or something like that. The attraction is that you can see all of Melbourne. To a photog it is useless. You can see the city buildings around 34km away, but there really isn't much worth photographing because everything is so tiny and not very recognizable. The city is shrouded in pollution as always. Bring binocs on this one.

LS,
Well, seems I'm getting dragged to a restaurant for Christmas smorgasbord with my parents & an American girl who's here in some exchange program for PhD's.
It'd be kinda cool to take some shots of the food, but as it's a fairly posh restaurant I doubt it'd go down well.

Morning all.
4:40 a.m. here and I woke with a stuffy head, coughing, so I can't rest (don't have nyquil apparently). Nice way to wake up eh?
Wow, you guys are still going strong here!!! I have spent the last two days and all of my Christmas spirit decorating the tree and house. I have decided to throw most of my decorations out when the holiday is over....too much stuff and not enough spirit!
On the up side, my son got a great job last Tuesday and finished his college degree Wednesday!! Yay! I am soo relieved.
Well, I am exhausted and off to bed! Happy Chatting, everyone!
Hey Maureen...congrats to your son. (and I love your new Christmas avatar!)
It is a legendary thread, isn't it? We must promise not to let anyone or anything undermine it. ;)
All my stuff goes to the lab. I don't even print out 4x6's. The only thing I print now are proof sheets for my portrait customers. I bought some inexpensive Ilford paper from Sam's club and use that to print proofs. They look good, so I get a lot of sales that way.
I agree...no undermining....(or overmining...or even sideways, if one is a wonkavator...)
Sleep is good :D
And good thing the freaks don't come to POTN....well...not all of them I guess..
I'm not even going to touch this one....
Hehe Yes, when I start my own magazine & act as editor, writer & occasional photographer you can all give interviews & reveal all my embarassing online confessions. :D
I'm awake now & debating if I should go in to Gothenburg & shoot in the amusement park or stay home & edit photos. The park has it's annual Xmas theme & market tho....
Ooooh, fun. I've never done a "tell all" interview Claire...

Hmm.. didn't notice the water was low until you pointed it out. Looked sorta-OK to me, but it's true Melbourne has been experiencing unusually low rainfall for a while.. they are gonna be in deep trouble unless they Do Something(tm) about it. There are things that can be done. It just needs doing.

Recycled water is honestly not as bad as it seems provided the filtration works. Actually, reverse-osmosis systems are so efficient they actually strip out even the natural minerals in the water, not to mention the bacteria! What you get is essentially as pure as distilled water. Certain industries (semiconductor, for example) even prefer recycled as it means less purification work to achieve the ultrapure water they need for their processes.
Besides, ALL water's been recycled a million times anyway.. it's not 'new' by any stretch of the imagination :p
Thanks for the kind words on the photo. Think that's the only one I got today.

Perhaps it's just hard for people to get used to the idea of the recycled water. I know I'd have a really hard time adjusting....even if I read everything there was to read about it...just the stigma I suppose.
And you're welcome. Sometimes it's a slow day for photo critiques. I rarely post them, except occasionally on here if I want an opinion.

Yeah, the water thing is largely psychological. Would you feel better, say, if they piped the 100% treated-and-tested-for-purity water back into reservoirs to mix with normal water so it is treated twice? (even though it actually does not need to be.. the discharge is already cleaner than the stuff coming out from treatment!)
Thanks for the photo critique. I usually post here since it actually gets more attention. Most days my stuff in the appropriate sections seems to go unnoticed. I'm not just here for the positive stuff as well, I want to hear the possible improvements or be asked for a reason "why did you do it that way" (sometimes it was necessary, other times it could be improved)

oh, thanks for the PM LS...it makes sense...because I rarely use the 17-40 on 17. Often around 22.... would explain the diff. in fall off, then? Or is it only when it's stopped down more?

Correct.. zooming in and/or stopping down reduces this issue. Also, depending on the design of the lens, some have less, some have more. The 300/4 ISL impressed me greatly because it had VERY little, even wide open, whereas the 1-4 has more. This is one of the tradeoffs that zoom lenses make.
This is why I generally shoot the 24-105 f/8 at the wide end whenever possible, or get the 17-40 to fill in for it. The 17 has a little bit of vignetting at the wide end, though much less compared to the 24 at 24, because of the less ambitious zoom ratio I think.
BTW - the fix is a simple, $15 one. http://epaperpress.com/ptlens/
Try it, it processes 10 images free of charge before you have to buy it to continue using it. I have used the (previously free :( ) versions, and I was very impressed. However, this is substantially cheaper than PSCS2 or DxO, both of which have correction features built in.
Oh wait, you have a Mac... then I'm not sure if you can use it. (sorry.. it's late at night and the Mac has never been kind to me)

the duck's buddies were just "waiting" in the brush, for some unlikely camera wielder (actually they were hoping to catch Petkal with one of his expensive lenses but....)...
some of them probably secretly wore tatoos but we'll not go there...
the ground was moist...the decoy flexed a little wing....

The renegade ducks were off...to wreak more havoc on unsuspecting photographers

Vignetting and light fall off are seldom a problem for me, even though they exist in many of the original images....I seldom print 4x6 or 8x12...most of my prints are 5x7, 8x10, 10x14 or 16x20......the crop for aspect ration takes care of any problems with the corners of the images.
The biggest problem I have is with the 17-40 or 16-35 on the 1Ds....I use the hood alternatives on both...and at the wide end you will end up with a bit of the hood in the frame. Not a problem with either lens on the 1DmkIIn or any of the 1.6 crop bodies.

Liza- connery voice=cold chills, weak knees, warm tinglies-- kinda like some flu symptoms, I guess but mouch more pleasant. Used to have a budy who did a spot on connery and knew my, um, enjoyment of the sound. We'd be sitting in a panel of scholars doing presentations and he'd lean over during lulls and whisper connery in my ear. Always led to good presentations from me.
I know Leary and Moody Blues too. I'm old. I'll take cheesecake and Jim Morrison, though.
wonder how long I can stay awake this time. . .
Wu I don't know any woman, self included, that doesn't exhibit above symptoms at Sean Connery's voice...I'm sure he's been the subject of many confessionals
I really hope you're okay...no doctor and a head smack...and sleep issues doesn't sound very good...

You do know that they found his body in New Orleans back in December of last year? Still a lot of unanswered questions.

nothing cool...just strange! (it was boring around here)
What'd you do?
My MIL is gone and I'm just relaxing. She was totally in one of her moods...22 yrs of marriage and I still am exhausted after a weekend with her. (Did I mention she's never really liked me?)

Just wrote 2/3 of my exam and did another load of laundry. That's major for this weekend. I even washed dishes earlier. I'm exhausted! lol
Mine didn't like me either- unless she needed me to do something for her- still didn't like me, but. . .
I am happy to say I totally LOVE my DIL and my future DIL. I even liked MIke's last SO. They are all intelligent, talented, and artsy women and loads of fun to be around. and they treat my sons well but don't take any guff from them when they forget who raised 'em and how!

  That's great. I'm always hoping I'll be a good MIL (and that I'll like my dil's/sil's). Son is not dating but daughter is serious. I don't ever want them to be unhappy with their future MIL.
Wow, sounds like you did get a lot done. When does winter break start?

sorry, but I'm not really drawn to that redeeming feature.
It's not the cowboys per se, rather Bill Parcells. I'm a huge fan of Coach. If I ever owned a football team, he'd be the guy that I'd pay bazillions to coach it....I'm (she says rather shamefacedly) a Raiders fan. (you'll just have to imagine the skulls & spikes...)

I'm done on the 14th at noon-- except for the grading and getting final grades turned in. I won't be able to work over break. They'll turn the heat off in the building so no PP for me. :(

I haven't had much energy either, Wu. It was a miracle that I actually washed the dishes and fed the cats. I'm just in a slump this weekend. A nice fellow I know contacted me earlier and said he wished he had known, because we could have gone to the movies. Damn! And I want to see that new one. I think it's called "We Are Marshall."

That's about the Kansas team isn't it? We lost a plane a few years ago at OSU. Not nearly so big but devastating to the campus and community.
Kids were going to take me to a movie while they were here but nothing was good in town and by the time we got done in topeka we were beat and just came home and made garlic shrimp on angelhair pasta with wilted spinach (it is actually really really good), baked artichole hearts and drank lots of good wine. I think we watched something on PPV but i believe we talked through it. It was a good time.

Trying to PP with no heat brings back memories of the old days...when the only heat in the facilities was from the lantern you carried to light your way out.

ROFLMBO! I have done that before. :)
as for photographic PP and no office heat, I remember working on a book a few years ago over christmas break. If the facilities guys had caught me I'd have been in trouble. I brought in several incandescent lamps and lit candles all around me- high up so I wouldn't knock them over. Still wore hat, fingerless gloves and many layers and my fingers were purple after just minutes at work. Got that sucker done though!

ROFL. I'm used to that. I smudged my office with sage and sweetgrass and got turned in for smoking weed in my office. Burned Sage has a familiar smell. Luckily, my dept head knew me and knew that I was a smudger.

I think most should be. I am thankful for indoor plumbing- especiall now that it is on the main level of my house. last place I lived the loo was at the top of some pretty trecherous stairs.
Woohoo! another load of laundry done. I will have my heavy baggy sweats to wear with my ratty angora sweater once time for relaxing comes around again! I'm on a roll!
