The thing that has elluded me for all these years is an Owl in the wild, still trying to find one (get lucky)

Hey Cat, I can tell you where to go where you're almost guaranteed to see at least 1 owl. I saw over 20 there this weekend. And it's in your state!

Granted, it's just over the Oregon border, so it'd be a long haul for you. Let me know if you're ever up for the trek and I'll give you the skinny.

Mooooorning all....

Dang I'm tired. Had to be up early because the USCG is going to be here to gather my sons belongings for storage. He's going to isolated duty and thought he'd like his stuff in storage instead of here...they said "we'll be there for two days". We said "he's got 10 boxes and a folding chair, how can you possibly be here for two days..." they said "we'll be there for two days....one for packing one for loading". We said "it's packed! Just load it..." and they said "two days...." Sigh. I'd forgotten what it's like dealing with the military...plus they gave us no warning. Called last night and said "we'll be there at 8 tomorrow morning..."

Our snow is going and I missed a really great photo opportunity. Yesterday was almost 50f so much of the snow had melted. But it got down to 25f last night and was dead calm. This morning everything had a very thick coating of ice crystals, not frost, that’s too smooth, but jaggedy crystals and it covered everything, all the way to the tops of the tallest trees. When the sun peaked over the horizon, the woods just lit up like a crystal forest. Spectacular, and my bag is sitting nice and comfy on my computer desk. Sigh!!

I guess I should confess....I have a cat too.

LOL...I should have had more coffee before I read that startling confession...I was totally unprepared!

My last cat lived to be 19. She was teensy little thing with a great big attitude.
My dogs have all been big people lovers and are so devoted to us. The cats never seemed to care about us at all.
Since I have owned several of each specie, I think I am safe to prefer one over the other.

The secret for loving cats is two neutered males...females are extremely independent but the males, especially those that are neutered are very affectionate.

So all along, Permagrin has been buying the wrong lenses.. and we never knew.. no wonder it's not going well

HEY! IT'S GOING FINE! I'M GETTING BETTER :p :p

My inmamous hat, to date, your the only one who likes it

Don't get too excited...he likes all sorts of weird hats that you'd probably be "shocked and slightly appalled" at :)

Time for that wife of yours to get a job;) ;) :D

Okay, you tell me who'd hire someone who spent from high school til 39 raising children and looking after various fund raisers and feckless wanderers? One thing about being a stay at home mom...kind of wrecks you for gainful employment when you are old....

Ok, no tea date for me. The guy says he realised he has to finish some work off for tomorrow. He said he might be able to later tonight, but I doubt it'll happen.

In a way good, I suddenly got swamped with work as well and can't stay over tomorrow. I think I'm gonna go home, get some food in me and back to the office. I hate not having broadband yet. Grrr....

I think the problem lies in that I really have no desire to cook.. I work with Chefs. guys who go on and on about different cuts of veal and sauces for Sea bass... And their incredible. Like watching art. and then I go home and everything my aunt's do looks like their tying their shoes.. they don't have to think about it they just do.. and then when I try I burn, overcook, undercook or plain forget that I wanted to cook at all and end up with peanutbutter and jelly or canned peaches.

I have seen some works that obviously belong to Tuppervilliagians in the book vote...casting a vote for the home team seems like a good thing to do...especially when their work is so good to begin with. Most groups have been very hard to make a decision...but a couple of groups seemed to be rather poorly represented...I couldn't find five shots worthy of a vote in them.

yes well.. I did boil the chicken... but I never microwaved the chicken.. But, I flunked the instant rice that wasn't as easy as the box said it was...

There's a secret to making rice. Even the non instant kind. It all hinges on what you use to cook it... and yes, you can microwave....rice.

There's a nifty little plastic device - a plastic microwave rice cooker. Pour prescribed quantity of rice and water into said device, set microwave to prescribed timing, come back when done. Remember to press start.

It's almost impossible to differentiate the microwave rice from the traditional rice cooker-cooked-rice. Take it from someone who's spent a lifetime eating that stuff and who can tell it coming ;)

Actually, that is a fantastic idea. If I had a yard and a garden, I'd stick a birdhouse there, and a 400/5.6L on a gimbal pointing at it. Maybe leave the 350D permanently attached to the 400L.

Unlikely you need to know any other. The traditional option is the electric rice cooker, which is practical for larger groups of people (and especially if you have the ability to co-opt them into doing the cleaning). This contraption is simply a hot plate element with a Teflon coated (nowadays. Wasn't the case 20 years back. Cleaning was a $#*) pot inside, and a lid with vents to slowly release the steam.

As for how they used to do it before electricity...stovetop, boil the rice, time it..

So unlike chicken, rice can be safely microwaved and retain its taste ;)

As for how they used to do it before electricity...stovetop, boil the rice, time it..

So unlike chicken, rice can be safely microwaved and retain its taste ;)

I used to boil it on the stove - but it has been so long I can't remember how much water for how much time, etc.... I have never tried an electric rice cooker, and I don't think I want to...

We have a rice cooker from Japan. Unfortunately, the directions are in Japanese, and not much help. According to the info on their website, it has 'fuzzy logic.' I felt an instant connection with it the moment I read that.

It seems to make good rice, although I'm never sure I've gotten the water to rice ratio correct since I have no idea how to use the blasted thing. The inside is marked with certain numbers that probably denote some kind of metric measurement,

The electric ones are automatic, some have very fancy timers and all kinds of other cooking options. I just slam it in the nuker like yourself.. more cost effective and it makes use of the microwave that's already paid for. ;)

My roommate in college was Japanese and I lived in an International Studies House. I was surrounded by people who made rice every day in a rice cooker.

Here's the deal on cooking rice in a rice cooker. Add as much rice as you'll need 1-X cups. Rinse well and drain. Smoothe out the rice so it is level. Put your index finger on top of the rice and fill with water until it hits your first knuckle. Turn it on and you're good to go. It'll be perfect every time.

I've been doing it this way for over 20 years (wow, did I graduate 20 years ago?)

(Standing by for wise@ss Muddy commentary!)

(sorry, that's something that I learned from my brother :o --he works for a large hobby shop in Montclair and they still get complaints from model builders who cannot read the Japanese on the directions for some of the higher end kits. This is their pat answer to them.)

Actually, that is a fantastic idea. If I had a yard and a garden, I'd stick a birdhouse there, and a 400/5.6L on a gimbal pointing at it. Maybe leave the 350D permanently attached to the 400L.

Dam that big. I am sure there wouldn't be that many houses in NZ that are this big :)
