Those are some nice rose shots, and I've seen a few (I tried going through Alyssa un-sorted pics last week, and she's got a couple thousand rose photos).

But I'm more curious about this cat... I've heard of a Kite-Eating tree, but not a Rose-eating cat

It's called a Pacha.

I, on the other hand, am a very kind and caring person and would never consider such a thing.

no, he was a whacko orange kitten who ran around everywhere...so we named him after this
Pacha: (two tailed pasha) a large orange-brown butterfly with two tails on each hind wing and complex patterns on the underwings, occurring around the Mediterranean and in Africa. • Charaxes jasius, subfamily Nymphalinae, family Nymphalidae.

I love a good sunset. Even more because it does not make me get up early for it.

Last trip to this place, I left my long zoom behind in the evening and completely missed out on getting the 'great ball of fire' shot of the setting sun. Well here it is - presented by none other than the 724ISL - light enough to be carried into the field and not left behind at home.

http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2721&g2_serialNumber=2

And a more ordinary shot, but one of the very rare portrait-style shots done with my tripod.

No, no Cokin for these. I use the GND only when the sky is substantially brighter than the foreground. The camera's got sufficient dynamic range to handle sunsets - no DR control needed with the GND.

I don't have the 67mm ring for my 724ISL either.. just a 77mm.

A530 rocks - enough so that I have one. Great little P&S. It's simple - but that's the whole point. Simple, affordable, and uses AA batteries. Sometimes you gotta love the basics. So what if I need more? Hmm.. I dunno. I have a feeling the answer has something to do with the stash of exotic glass I have been accumulating ;)

Excellent shots! Especially the first... I wonder when the Pigeon Queen's gonna post some of her sunset shots...

Thanks John.. I'm tired as all heck, hate the hard car seats (my vehicle has particularly BAD seats), but looking at these photos.. they make it all worthwhile.

In a twist on the usual "Nice camera" comments, I ran into a fellow tourist toting a Finepix who complimented mine. I usually almost always play down the fact that I do have a nice rig.. I told him "Yeah, but it gets REALLY heavy hauling these over the cliffs". He agreed, but said "Well.. when you get home, it's all gonna be worth it."

So true..... wise dude!

Thanks John.. I'm tired as all heck, hate the hard car seats (my vehicle has particularly BAD seats), but looking at these photos.. they make it all worthwhile.

Was this the car that got decorated by pigeons?

Oh, and good story about the other tourist. Most when they see my 20D and one of the Big White Lenses say "Nice camera" "Now that's a camera" "Now that's a lens", nothing wise... :(

No, the pigeon victim was the car I REALLY love. Of course when you fly overseas you can't bring it with ya.. I had to compromise for something else. Long story. It's still waiting for me when I head back. :)

Most of the rest of the tourists say that except the pro (real working pro, although on vacation this morning) with a 5D and 24-70L. :)

The one I totally didn't get was the one using the 20-35 on a 20D. What a totally odd selection of focal lengths (32-56mm).

Thanks :) Maybe when things slow down a little I will post some to keep y'all occupied. That will give me a moment to do some PP as well.

This lot of landscape shots, unlike my usual selection, seems to benefit from being heavily cooked. That is a most unusual phenomenon.

The first sunset shot is completely uncooked however, just metered for the highlights and shot. (wanted to crush out the shadows for dramatic effect)

a 20-35 on a 20D?? ??? Maybe it does f/50 or something, or is really sharp, or he didn't have anything wider ? Strange...

I wouldn't even use f/50. Not even f/22. Diffraction softening bites ya.

Really not sure about this guy.. I totally could not figure him out. There are other better solutions to get a wide and for the price he was paying for the 20-35, it might just be better to go 17-40. My best guess was that he was sold the 20-35 as an ultrawide, which it is on FF.

Most people's understanding of crop vs traditional 35mm focal lengths are all messed up too. They seem to think 28mm is wide because traditional literature calls it wide, but said literature does not deal with crop cameras.. often not even digital. But I won't get started on that.

Oh you and I are fine, but a lot of digital folks aren't. Yes, the calculations do come into play...

Why not upgrade to a 5D? The 85/1.2L is BREATHTAKING on that camera. I shot one on my 5D.......oooooooooh wow. Sadly I cannot even find a real or IMAGINED excuse to keep the 85/1.8, so.....

When I was shooting Alyssa at her piano competition the other night, I was wishing I had it on a FF camera. It was all I could do to keep the kids and the piano keys in the same shot.

The 5D potential went right out a few weeks ago when our computer died, and I built my wife something for her scrapbooking that's made her very happy (and her digiscrapper friends turn green with envy).

But I might have to settle for a 1.3 crop factor camera. Maybe I should have typed that as a "1.III crop factor camera" ;)

Actually I think they read most everybody's posts.. the camera has something for everybody except those who bash the Live View feature. Basically, just because they don't use it doesn't mean someone else with specialized needs won't find a use for it... yaknow.. not everybody has the same needs. To me it's a fantastic breakthrough in terms of remote shooting and macro work. Will *I* use it? Maybe not. Doesn't stop me from acknowledging that someone will love it... it's not a default anyway so those who don't need it can simply pretend it never existed and love the camera - for everything else it is :)

The N is tempting, but I'm waiting for the price to fall to $2K flat before I even consider it. Personally the 3's feature list is so long and there is so much stuff I want that yes, it makes it sorta even possible to even begin to think about coughing up $4K.. I must be going nuts... but it is.

The one thing I do miss about my 1D classic is the sharp crack of the shutter that's unique. The 5D's shutter sounds like a lazy yawn. The 30D sounds like it's working a bit faster, but that's about it.. the 1D sounds like BUSINESS.

The other night, the TV news cameras picked up the shutter sound of their fellow PJ counterparts.. and the moment I heard it, I was dead certain it was a 1D or successor even though they never showed the actual 1D on TV.

At least he's glowing, so you should be able to see him in the dark...

I know exactly what you mean. I got through all the Mk.III thread the other day, and haven't really gone back. Canon's gonna build a camera that appeals to the widest group of people possible. If someone doesn't need a feature, guess what? These cameras don't force you to use it! The Live View is a neat feature, and I'm glad they got it to work. Is it something I'm going to use? Probably not, but it's there if I need it. And there have been plenty of times when I wished that my 20D have a live preview on the back. But does that stop me from using it? No, if I wanted that feature bad enough, I'd get an S3 IS, or some other P&S.

Unless business picks up dramatically, or some rich uncle that I don't know about kicks the bucket, it'll be a long time before I get into a 1-series body.

I'd like to hear what the shutter sounds like on the Mk.III. Specifically, how loud is it. My 20D makes quite a racket with the mirror slapping around in there. It's an odd feeling when you're trying to take a picture from the back of a church, and people turn to see where that "clack-clack" sound came from... :o

Is it really that loud? How loud is the 30D?

Before I start on the replies..

I just noticed in the white paper, that for the Live View sample images, Canon uses a porcelain DUCK.

HOLY DUCK SHOT...

Perhaps a Canon rep quietly lurks amongst these (un)hallowed halls

Oh, trust me, you don't want to know. The 1D's shutter screams "LOOK AT ME DAMMIT, I MEAN BUSINESS". The 5D's shutter is second quietest compared to the 350D. As a PJ I like the 1D's shutter especially when out in the field at the chaos of events.

Actually the 1DM3 has a new silent single shot drive mode that damps shutter and mirror noise..... you might want to seriously check it out!

Has Alyssa ever said what she calls cows?

We were driving past a field once, where there were some cows grazing. My wie says "Kids, look! Cows!" The boys start saying "Where? Where?" Alyssa looks out the window and says "Yum! Steak On Legs."

That's what they all call 'em here on RRTP too, I thought? ;)

How old are the kids?

I don't know.. Dave has a theory that it's good to shoot as though your using film.. get it right the first time... and don't waste shots... But, then again. one of the niceties of digital is that we can take as much as we like... :D ..

Let's see a zoo shot?

yea I don't know how to do that. I never used film SLR camera  so but I do try and get the shot right first time

anyway here's one for you to live up to

It's loud. I can't quantify how much noise it produces, but people know when I've taken a picture. Alyssa's XT is whisper quiet in comparison.

Nice one Mark....

Since when were you at the zoo? Weren't you trying to disguise yourself as a videographer named Mark shooting alongside me on the Great Ocean Road? Yeah yeah, ya think carrying a video camera and a P&S will throw me off the scent huh ;)

I'll have to check that white paper again. I was going through it pretty quick cuz I was at work.

That's another plus in the 5D's column.

Definately. I'd also like to know how many shots-per-second can be achieved in their "silent" mode.

How old are the kids?

16, 12 and 10. All even numbers, this year...

haha, yea that was me. I try to hind the 10D and the sigma 100-300 around my neck :)

I guess it didn't work.

well it's seems that someone knows their elephants :)

I guess telling Sari to make sure she doesn't get eatin by one of these then is out of the question.

the zoo did have some tigers etc but they seem to be hinding. I did tell my friend that she should go in and get them run around but she didn't like that idea. I can't understand why
