Yep, that's our little puppy. Well, she's not really all that little, German Shepherds usually aren't that small. And since she's about 11 now, she's not really a puppy anymore. I have to be careful with what I do around her.

Morning guys.
Many congratulations to Permie for the 8K posts, I liked the synchronised duck ducking in that shot BTW.
I've got a job interview in about 90 mins time. It's with someone I know fairly well, so will be a pretty relaxed chat next door in the pub. Here's hoping!

Hi Pete! Good luck in the interview. Well, in the outcome of it. sounds like a great way to interview.
report when done?
Pete
8th of March 2007 (Thu), 03:13
Thanks Wu... The guy sounds pretty confident about it and he definitely wants me (from the sound of it). The only problem being that out companies have worked closely together in the past (and still do to a lesser extent), so there might be a possibility of accusations of them headhunting me. I don't think that'll come to pass though, as I'm the one who approached them asking if they knew of any vacancies for their other customers.
The company I'm interviewing for is www.pivotal.com
wu_wei0
8th of March 2007 (Thu), 03:19
would there be a problem if they were to have headhunted you? I guess possible loss of future business for pivotal, but other than that?
I'm going to check out the co.
Pete
8th of March 2007 (Thu), 03:24
Since this company has worked closely with mine, if could be viewed as being unethical for them to approach me to offer me a job, Pivotal could get sued for them enticing me away.
I doubt that'll be an issue though, given the fact my job's in line to be taken over by someone in India.

Just ran five prints on my IP6600D..
Some of you may remember the Great Ocean Road airborne shots I took from the air.. many of the RAWs are so low-contrast I honestly thought the entire shoot was a writeoff. After intensive cooking in DPP and PS, the prints look absolutely AWESOME, with all the color and contrast I saw from the air.. very happy :)
I was even able to erase some of the 'spots' caused by reflection off the plexiglass cockpit while at the same time making the images look 100% natural - even though I *KNOW* I darn well did some heavy duty PP work on those areas, I can't actually see them in the print and it looks as if nothing was ever done. Despite going and looking for it... :) that is the goal....PP it but make it look natural.
Pete
8th of March 2007 (Thu), 06:52
Nice one Kevin. I'm currently reading Bruce Fraser's sharpening book. You might be able to make the prints even sharper by ramping up the USM, but keep the halos under 3pixels.
I've not tried it out though, but apparently it'll look right nasty on screen, but make an improvement in the printed version.
Lightstream
8th of March 2007 (Thu), 07:01
That's cool, but I don't seem to need any additional sharpening. Once I fixed the tone curves, contrast and levels, everything looks great. DPP already applied Sharpening +4 with the landscape picture style I used for the RAWs (in addition to all the above PP treatment.). I generally use picture styles as first-pass fixup, before proceeding to additional TLC if needed.
Of course, this very labor-intensive workflow is only reserved for a chosen few images.. :)
There is also a two-pass USM sharpening + contrast enhancement technique that I did not use for these images (not appropriate - didn't like the results). First pass USM with 50%, 15 pixel radius. Second pass with 300%, 0.3px. It works pretty well, although I used other, more appropriate methods for getting my contrast boost.
The thing about PP and photography is that not every solution works for every image. I have techniques that work superbly well on certain images - and TOTALLY fall flat on the next, so I guess that's where I have to change my workplan to adapt and find a better way to do things.
Pete
8th of March 2007 (Thu), 07:05
totally agree with you there, Kevin. There is no magic button/action that'll do it all for you. That would be altogether too easy. I'll often use quick mask and only sharpen the point of interest in special shots, just to pop them out of the background. A touch of Gaussian blur also helps to push things backward as well.

I bought the Arctic butterfly last week, and on our last shoot Puddle noticed he had a nice sized glob on his sensor (you all may remember the last sensor ordeal soooo....) anyway, he used the AB...took him less than a minute (2.5 if you include removing the lens and then testing to see if it worked). It works like a charm...so a HEARTY endorsement for that product, it is EVERY bit worth it's $90 price tag.

Okay all I have a thought for you.. need some opinions...
A member today offered me some photog. work taking pictures of some of the properties he's selling.
Member- the elite property owners of the resort I work for.
Now, because this is a very small town the majority of the local members are familiar with me and that i've shot for the resort...do you suppose that the important guys behind the big desks would have a problem with my taking on a part time gig through the folks that I meet at work?... I have an inkling that it may be considered a conflict of interests or whatever... But, members are treated like gold and they wouldn't have any kind of attitude with him but, slightly concerned if they may not be thrilled with me taking work... on the other hand, Rule number one in this joint is that if you can accomodate these guys you do. so, I would be in an uncomfortable position turning him down and I'd be in an uncomfortable position if the resort doesn't want me doing it?... Help!! Please!!!..

I don't know why they would see it as a conflict of interest. You were introduced to someone through work. Your work for that person would be in an entirely different capacity. If they were hiring you to work the bar at a private party outside the resort, that would be another story.
I say, go for it.
gjl711
8th of March 2007 (Thu), 17:36
I agree, I don't see a conflict of interest. Just because you work for someone does not give them cart blanch rights to your entire existence. They don't own you. What you choose to do off hours is entirely your business an none of your employers business. The only caveat would be if you had signed a contract stating that you would not take part time work.

Sari,
I think that you probably could take on the extra work. What I would be cautious about is discussing or accepting business while at work. If some one inquires while you are on shift. Polietly tell them that you are interested and give them a card and take one of theirs. Tell them that you will contact them when you are not on the Clock. Just MHO for what it is work.

Mooooogley Gooooogley Tupper Peeps!!
I had a frustrating day on the Southern California freeways today. The traffic I expected, but there were a couple opportuniteis for photos that would have been fun if I'd only had the camera at the ready. (It was in the trunk)
1. We passed a restaurant with a big sign that said, "Chinese Muslim Restaurant." Huh?
2. I saw a small herd of Texas Longhorn cattle in a pasture next to the freeway.
3. We were looking for a dollhouse store, and found ourselves in the parking lot of a small shopping center that seemed to specialize in adult video stores, tattoo parlors, and the like. Fortunately, the navigation system in the car was about a block off. It might have made for some interesting shots, but Lois wasn't too happy about being there.
4. I saw a brand new GE locomotive pulling a train into Colton. That thing was shinier than my own ride, and would have been a real catch. Unfortunately, I was on the freeway with no chance of getting off.
Now I am home in my recliner.

I just finished dinner and am now ready for a long night of RRTP!
Hullo Scott :)

Sounds like you had an interesting day Chief...I'm with Lois though, I'd have rather not sat through a photo session at a tatoo parlor or "the like" :D
Too bad you didn't get the train shots though, I never used to like them until you all started posting photos...
and a LONG HORN COW would have been perfect for tupperware!

When I lived in North Hollywood (very close to where they had that huge automatic weapon shootout/bank robbery in the late '90s), it seemed like there was an adult video store on every corner. Then I moved to Houston, where it seemed like there was a strip club on every corner. Not sure which was worse -- probably a fair amount of crossover, I guess.

That's cool that you won, but isn't Audubon a bird thing? Why would they have a cow ranch as a prize? (although it's cool, it just puzzles me...then again, they could be enlightened auduboners, similar to tupperwarians, where cows are concerned!)
