Oh, and Lightstream, thanks for the comments re: the bird shots. I did everything wrong (no aiservo), didn't try to shoot them at all and viola...there they are
The birds were most likely at infinity. Beyond a certain distance, everything is considered 'infinity', so one-shot would work - I nail the big metal birds which fly very high, that way :)
AI Servo is good when the focal point is constantly changing between the lens minimum focus distance (MFD) and infinity.
300 bucks seems rather pricey for a flashlight....it better fetch me a beer and have my slippers waiting at the door for that kind of money.
wow that's pretty spendy!
I knew it :p
That 70-200/2.8 ISL had better have a chick waiting in bed for me for the amount I'm paying!
(it's all relative.. some of us are enthusiasts and want the stuff that'll do what nothing else can - six level variable power with digital regulation for constant output (doesn't dim as the batteries weaken), mmm..)
It adds up to a $600 difference out here in the sticks. Imagine the amount of uhh...love....you could buy.... without the need to stress out or find reasons to ask people out!
OK, better not drift into MA-18 territory any more or we will get smacked ;)

You know...spend $29 bucks at target, use the rest to buy the 85. And coffee.
(husband says surefire makes good flashlights...I say, just "curse the darkness" and go with cheap)
Let's see.....photog stumbling around Great Ocean Road in pitch darkness with tripod and 5D/17-40 combo... :D One wrong step and I might get to photograph the place for eternity, from above ;)
Actually between the 85 and the U2, it would be the U2. It really would get used far more often than the 85. BTW I was an early adopter - mine is from the first production run. :D

I had to hit the store today...all my sweatshirts seem to have evaporated....250 bucks later...I can be warm for a few days...40 bucks for a sweatshirt is absurd...but when you seek odd sizes...I guess you have to pay a price.

not sure yet. I miss having a functional laptop. Playing on the bed is better than this chair. Plus there are blankets!
I own one hoodie. If I hadn't worn it yesterday I'd have it on now. I could use another layer of pants too. These are the heavy yummy ones but tonight I am just freezing. lastnight I was too warm. I think the heat is up all the way to 66. I set it about there for this time of nioght. usually comfy enough

Doing curls with 70-200 2.8 IS and the 100-400 is great weight training.
Yes it is. Put that on a 1D and you have an excellent combo. Usually the Sigma 70-200/2.8 (nearly same weight as Canon classic version without IS) is paired to that camera.
I DO notice a very visible difference in bicep size after extended few-hours-of-handholding every weekend... no kidding. I try to run one photo op each weekend at the very least.
I don't actually mind the weight if I am using and shooting with the lens. What I REALLY mind is carrying bag weight for hours. One shoot.. had the 1D/70-200 on me, standing for six hours.. only then did it get heavy. However, the bag gets heavy a lot earlier than that.

Don't.. you have a much lighter, less back-breaking bag that enables you to walk further and see more sights :) No kidding the BEST part of the XT is the weight...or lack of it! Explains why I still have mine.
Besides.. a lens pulling duty as a paperweight is not fulfilling its potential. The 50/1.8 drew a desk job, but was too light and eventually ended up being sold. Wonder if it is at its new home too.
300/4 ISL left yesterday. Should be in transit to the next state already.

geez. I am freezing! Got my favorite sweats, a snuggly shirt, my favorite ratty angora sweater and socks on. Heat's running and I am shivering. I may have to hit the bed just to get warm.
It's freezing here too. I was frozen from the shoot and we keep our heat at 62 at night. so I'm IN BED! Husband is a natural heater so that's nice.
I drop mine back to 66 at night...that is cool enough for me...still need flannel sheets and two comforters to keep my teeth from chattering.
I keep it about 68 degrees in here all winter. Not too hot, not too cold. I only sleep with a couple of blankets and a cat or two to keep me warm. That Maine Coon kitten of mine is probably about 12 to 14 pounds right now, and he's only 7 months old! Nice and snuggly.

ok I am going to give you some more advice (and you will more than likey do nothing about it ;) yes I am only joking )
in most parts of the western world they have things called gyms, you can go there to lift weights which will help overcome pain of carrying so much weight :)
but then in saying that, I should also take my own advice.
Well I sort of am. I am lifting weights at home.
I know what you mean. I still having gotten used to the 10D with the sigma 100-300F4 attached to it. I would hate to think of the weight with a 1 series.

for walking around I like my shoulder bag... but boy do I get a stiff neck from it... I'm leaning towards a backback because it has to be more comfortable and I want a LOT more space than what I have now... I want to be able to keep my 70-200 on my body and put it in my bag.. I can't now... and I want it to be very padded and I want the straps to be thick and cushy and I want it to have a quick snap and a zipper and I want lots of outside pockets for batteries and memory and maybe room for my wallet and lipstick... and It would be nice if it could be atleast a little feminine..

Stand around waiting for the action at a horse jumping event, for six hours under the sun (now I know why the Aussie bush hat is designed the way it is).. yup.. I can relate :D
My penchant for zooms is paid for in weight or lack of aperture....
I use my Computrekker for moving gear from location to location, but prefer to work out of my Domke. Usually 2-3 lenses will cover all I need.

IS version, which is a staggering 50gm heavier, I think ;)
It'll make a nice change from the Sigma Concrete Block (actually, come to think of it, it has the correct color and texture :D) on the days when I don't need 2.8. Sold my 300/4 to cover the cost of this one so the net outlay is very little.
The big debate in my mind is whether I should sell the Sigma TOO and get the 70-200/2.8 ISL (ie. go all the way, go nuts), but as I was saying, the heavy zooms tend to get left behind - and therefore I would not get full value out of it.

That Maine Coon kitten of mine is probably about 12 to 14 pounds right now, and he's only 7 months old! Nice and snuggly.
I have a Maine Coon story. We bought a female about 10 years ago...Maine Coon. Didn't get her fixed quick enough and she had kittens. Well something about her "genetics" (perhaps she was too closely bred or something)....combined with maternity, caused her to snap. She went insane, killed 2 of her 5 kittens and we saved the 3rd one literally at the last moment. The mom had to be put down sadly. We kept the kitten that was almost killed and he was bonkers...seriously borderline psychotic...if someone disciplined him, he'd chase them down the hall biting at their heels...he was whacko, but we kept him until he too passed away, because we felt bad for him, starting out at such a disadvantage. When we bought the female, we were told they were great cats, loving and friendly and good for a family. She was, until she "snapped". He never was...but he loved water. You couldn't keep him out of a full bathtub...I think I liked him because he was "whacked"!

Yup, I understand. Thanks for the recommendation.. my strategy is that since I use f/2.8 less often (and f/4 a lot more often), I would keep the Sigma for the days when I need it, but carry the lighter lens for everything else. That'd also enable me to split my setup into 2 lenses, rather than just lump the whole investment into one big 2.8 IS L. If I was a sports shooter it would probably be a whole different story.
Also, the days when you really need 2.8 to stop action, you need high shutter speeds too (1/500 as you mentioned). This'll essentially eliminate the need for IS because we're way over the 1/focal_length rule already.

Don't feel left out. I have a hate hate relationship with my big lenses. Sold one, hate it that I did. (though it was really heavy). Kept one...hate it. Just plain hate it
I have a Maine Coon story.
Teddy, my Maine Coon, is pretty whacked from spending a couple of days trapped between two walls. It was just by the grace of God that I heard him crying and rescued him. He was a sweet little kitten who has expanded rapidly to a huge cat. And he won't be a year old until April. He and the other kitten I found the same day both like water and will get in the shower with me. The little calico also likes to climb as high as she can possibly get. I saw her tiptoeing on top of an open door the other day. She also likes to climb the shower curtain and use the curtain rod as a balance beam while I'm showering.
Also, the days when you really need 2.8 to stop action, you need high shutter speeds too (1/500 as you mentioned). This'll essentially eliminate the need for IS because we're way over the 1/focal_length rule already.
That's for sure. I would really never need an IS lens due to the subject matter that I shoot. And with my muscle tone, I handhold very steadily anyhow.

Lightstream that article on pregnancy and mental illness was really interesting. I'll be the first one to admit that having children really does alter you mental state
Yes, but that only explains half the basket cases on this thread - the rest haven't been through it, and some (by design) are ineligible, so what do THEY have to blame for their nuttiness? ;)
(I blame similarly tragic life-altering circumstances...and too much blood in the alcohol stream)

Oh, I'm glad you saved them! I do love cats and yours sound adorable...after Lady Macbeth (our MC), I decided to never buy one again...just adopt the less fortunate....
We named LMcBeth's son, Louis De La Mala...it was fitting. And a word of warning...that balancing on the shower rod thing is cute...Lou used to do it on the shower doors....until they slip. Then it's time for stitches. Don't ask me how I know this. Or about the time he jumped from those doors to the top of my head, whilst I was indisposed....he went through screen doors instead of waiting until they were opened...use to ambush the children when they were little...he was something all right.

You sound happy drunk, but still in need of IS :p
What's in the pitcher tonight? I used to make my drinks by the pitcher too till I realized it would probably be better if I didn't feel obligated to finish it :p

Hey, thanks for the article, Yoda! The "trilling" they described is exactly what both Teddy and the other cat do instead of meowing.

GUys, I have to tell you something...I was just grinding coffee for the morning...opened a new bag. Noticed that it said on the side "grind by Oct. 12 '07....7:02pm" I kid you not. Even if I was so inclined as to leave coffee around for a year or so.....what would happen if I waited until Oct. 12th, 8:30pm?? ??" Does this seam strange to anyone else but tired old me?

I was thinking that the comparison photo of the large MC vs the small cat really needed help.. ;)
I never look at a picture the same way again..and as for the definition of 'snapshot'.. reading the blogs of most 18-20somethings with the horrible misspellings, inability to write properly and worst of all: them and their camera phones.. now that is truly horrifying photography if the term can even be stretched that far!

I think mine comes from working around people with disabilities and mental illness for so long. It starts to rub off after a while. :)

I didn't buy this kitten. He is one of several feral cats that live in my mother's barn. There are a number of them but we haven't been able to catch any of them until I found Teddy. And I never buy animals either. There are too many strays who need homes.
night Wool...

Thanks. I noticed that. I'll have to take some more shots of Teddy now that he's larger. Much larger. :)

What ever happened to the notion of having photo assignments? Or did I miss something?

The coffee collapses inwards unto itself towards a vanishing point, creating a miniature black hole and sucking in everything else within a couple of meters. Be advised this may cause severe damage to your kitchen. Drink it quickly ;)
I am finishing this pack of pre-ground coffee and will be doing the grind-on-demand thing for the next batch. No more pre-grinding large batches (I am still a n00b remember..)

That is pretty funny...perhaps you should set aside a small sample...to brew specially at 8:30 on the 12th.

It was discussed briefly...but not to the point of actually deciding to do anything about it.
