The coffee collapses inwards unto itself towards a vanishing point, creating a miniature black hole and sucking in everything else within a couple of meters. Be advised this may cause severe damage to your kitchen. Drink it quickly ;)

I am finishing this pack of pre-ground coffee and will be doing the grind-on-demand thing for the next batch. No more pre-grinding large batches (I am still a n00b remember..)

MUST DRINK COFFEE (future and forever mantra)

Just noticed the time. It's back to bed for me! Night all!

Night Liza...I'm off for good now too ;)

That is pretty funny...perhaps you should set aside a small sample...to brew specially at 8:30 on the 12th.

That's actually my anniversary. I can't think of a worse way to start the day, than with year old coffee...probably I'll pass on this one

Where is your sense of adventure? I doubt there could be much difference between year old and 50 year old coffee. Heck, during my time in the military, we were using coffee packaged at the end of WWII...that was 30+ years old and people sucked it down by the bucket full. At least they did...right up until the time I was ordered to make a pot of that crud and decided to clean their nasty old coffee maker out with some Comet. ;)

This said from a person who hates coffee..
(on the fact side: the beans get dry and lose their flavor...and smell something like folgers, when they get old. bleah)

on the FUNNY side: that was a horrid thing to do! Did you forget to rinse the comet or something?  And if I had the choice btw. old coffee and no coffee, I too would chose old (I think...however, I'm not quite sure).

Morning. Again, it's pretty quiet around here....

LS, I like what we're doing now, photowise. Except that maybe we could ask for C&C (as in the shots I posted yesterday, I didn't even see that the lamp one was blurry...). That way we're just posting what we're shooting normally. And we get to see what the others "do" (instead of assign something). What do you guys think? I definitely wouldn't mind advice from all of you. And I love seeing what you are out and about, doing.

I make no bones about the fact I don't care for coffee...the smell of it turns my stomach. I did rinse the pot out...but supposedly...something happens when you mix Comet and stainless steel...add coffee and you get a rather horrid taste....perhaps all the chlorine.

As far as just sharing pics and seeking input...that works fine for me...I am always up for ways to make stuff better. And it is kind of fun to share in an unstructured way.

Still reeling from the defeat...but since it is only December...it can be lived with...I suspect that it would have been much more traumatic had it occured in March. It must have been bad...my brother didn't call me this morning to go over the details...He too is an SU alum and die-hard fan....especially when it comes to basketball. Must be he was too busy making wine to complain.

The winds should subside come the final ebb and flow of the semester. That is the best time to seek (gold) bricks!

I guess 1K was a turning point...then there was 2K and we were still in the same game...I suspect you having to work a full time job, while I get to play full time...might just have a wee bit of bearing on the PC disparity of the moment.

I never knew that about coffee and chlorine...I always clean my pot with vinegar. Then lets do that, re: the photos. I don't post on the critique anymore because of the tendency to fillet, but I do appreciate honest suggestions.

The light reflecions there at the top make it look a bit like a mini aurora.
The aurora is one of my items on the TDBID list. I did see a mior display at camp a few years ago but I missed the big one the night before we got there.

It was so funny. My oldest and I pull up to the lodge at Stearns where my other two were directors that summer. I was barely out of the car when the guys who had come down to visit with us a couple years back were scooping me up and twirling me around telling me all about the aurora I missed and where the best places to watch were. Of course, my own sons were a little late in the welcoming.

The whoel camp was on aurora alert for me the whole time I was there, it seemed. we'd get a radio call any time of night to tell me about what was showing and a couple times I was woken in the middle of the nightand hauled off to try to catch a glimpse. We only made it to the clearings once for just a flicker.

Fun times. Great group of kids. Can't wait til Josh and Jess's wedding next year so I can see those characters again.

Take it as a compliment...it's a thoughtful (and while I don't mean anything by this) and romantic detail that isn't often thought of....well done! Oooh, and surround sound...cool.

Can't think of anything better than to add a bit of classical music in the mix w/all the stuff I mentioned earlier

Could be nice.:) Blues and beers could be a good way to go, as well. All kinds of good options out there

I do candles for me all the time. In Grad school I used to have tuesday nights to myself and would light masses of candles to do my class readings by. Whenever company came it was always candlelight regardless of who. I remember a new GF of one of the boys asking if I was a witch.

I have candles all over my place- even backyard, and front porch. . . Don't light them much anymore though. Probably should - makes me feel better. I really like light and shadow. sometimes don't like the flicker so much, but I love to watch or trace the patterns.

listen to Storybook Love. (If you ever saw the Princess Bride, it's the theme song w/words...and a very funny MOVIE if you've never seen it) I'd never heard the song before (apparently it runs during the credits or something) until my daughter came down...then I went to itunes and listened to the trio...I just love a lot of their stuff.....though they are a serious style mix...blues, latin...a lot of everything really.

Page is for certain on the list...but I don't go along with Rolling Stones version of the top 100 at all. Warren Haynes, Dickie Betts, Neil Young and Steven Stills get no where near the respect they deserve...and Todd Park Mohr is just plain forgotten.

Wu, I didn't see your photos until Sari reposted them. Just LOVE your sunroom!!! How gorgeous and romantic is that?!?!?! My house is one of those "cookie cutter" types...just was built about 4 yrs ago. What it lacks in style I suppose it gains in efficiency but still....

I rent a great old classic craftsman that has some nice features. That sunroom is quite nice but I don't spend time in there. Right now it is a little chilly, but I haven't used the room since April, I think- whenever they cut down my rose tree right outside the window. It makes a nice studio as well.

Craftsman is my favorite...used to like victorian as well but eventually I found I liked cleaner lines. And your sunroom/studio is really awesome. But since we were buying to stay for a long time and I'm tired of $200 heating bills around here, we decided to go more modern rather than renovate.

I've made more money than salaried employees.. especially the chefs considering the hours they put in they don't make nearly what a server or bartender will make.. ofcourse this job is feast or famine but the guys that make a salary can depend on it week by week...

I was lucky- the owner installed a high efficiency heating/cooling system a couple years ago and just installed all new storms. Even in the hottest summer elec bill was only 60 for a high and heat runs around 90. The last place I lived in town gave me a 400 dollar heating bill for 1 winter month. Even with the heat going all the time (and not turned higher than 68 ) I wore multiple layers to bed along with mittens and a hat sometimes. I was never warm there.
This place is substangially larger, nicer, safer, and much cheaper in rent and bills both. Someday I might buy again, but not til I end up somewhere I'd remotely like to stay.

Don't know how I got so lucky with this one. The house is (relatively) enormous, 2 story with full basement, several attic spaces. . . The only room I have closed off is the sunroom and not even that when I moved in at the end of winter. May have a bit higher in late dec through january but I'm not expecting any surprises.
I do hate the aluminum storms though. Really detract from the appearance of the house (along with the crappy new paint job) but they may just do better for me than the wooden storms. I didn't even have all of them up last year.

Would be nice to actually sit and chat by the fire. I enjoy the company here

Speaking of which, Wool, how was the hot tub and BB&M last night?

I like that idea much better. I tend to rebel when someone tells me what I have to shoot. We had a nice show and tell the other night with images, which was fun and no stress. Let's do that again from time to time.

I just realized my son is 20 today. Now that's weird...makes me feel OLD...for some reason my birthdays don't affect me as much as my children's birthdays...though, I am turning 40 next year so perhaps that might actually knock me over the brink

Hey, I found that life begins at 40. That's when I divorced my loser husband, quit my crappy job, went back to school to get my teaching certification, and took a young lover. It was a magical time. ;)

He is certainly right up there with Clapton, Hendrix, Duane Allman, Mark Knopfler, and Eric Johnson. And then of course...you have BB.

Eric Clapton is, IMO, the best guitarist living today, and Duane Allman is the best of all time. Did you realize that a lot of the stuff you hear on "Layla" is him?

Priorites, man! Take your walk with just one body and one lens. Cards and extra battery if needed in pocket. Hood worn as a bracelet. Switch the pens in your plastic pocket protecor out for your lens pen. Skooch your bag dividers over. Plop in the sixpack. (pay)
The padding acts as great insulation. Heck, even my baby Tamrac (expedition 3, I think) holds a nice bottle of wine or a decent sized bottle of Sapphire.

The reason why I love my F-802 is that it is the general purpose Sack of all Trades, in my personal opinion, THE ultimate messenger bag, and I have been looking for a long time, almost as long as I've been a laptop owner (10+ years). I can even carry it into a corporate setting, place it underneath my desk and nobody realizes I am going off on a photo shoot once I clock off :D all of them think it is a nice laptop bag.. little do they know.

When actually used in that role (rarely), it will carry two 17" display laptops and their support gear (and break shoulders if you dare to load it that heavily). My actual laptop bag is this ratty old thing with way too many pockets and looks nowhere near as nice.

As for here.. I carry the Heineken keg openly.. big city, nobody cares ;) (the "real men" carry 3x24 can slabs at one go.. DAMN..)

#1 is fine. Sometimes the camera can 'see' more acutely than we can given certain conditions. Some of my evening shots look like broad daylight until I crank the exposure comp down (the time you asked me, why -1/3rd.. pretty much that)

#2 doesn't work.

#3 works because it gives the impression that the light is the only source in the picture.

God, what would I give to sit down at a Starbucks with someone whose company I really value (need not even be someone I want to pick up.. just any of my coffee drinking crew will be just fine). Have headache, have coke, have ibuprofen - not a good substitute but we will make do.

Yeah, I see where #2 doesn't work. One doesn't work for me...when I zoom it it appears sharp but the shadows make it seem blurry. I guess I'll just have to go re-shoot it under better circumstances.

On a happier note, I fixed my tripod ballhead. The panning base had a VERY VERY annoying movement to it - ie. it moves even AFTER I lock the panning knob! And no amount of force would make it any better.

I was actually planning to take the ballhead back to my reseller next week and ask for a solution, but there's no need to do that now. Very happy. Turned out there were three small screws in the bottom - with torx heads (not the standard stuff!). Thank god for buying the Bit Kit for my multitool - I got 42 different bits to tackle any screw imaginable. And the ballhead is doing much better now after re-torquing the screws... yay for the cheap chinese ballheads ;)

Seriously.. if you folks want a very very decent $90 ballhead with a solid lockup and lightweight price, this is a good one..
http://cgi.ebay.com/Benro-KS-1-Ball-Head-Ballhead-fit-Gitzo-Manfrotto-K2B_W0QQitemZ200055456028QQihZ010QQcategoryZ30095Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

No affiliation to the ebay reseller. I bought it from the local camera shop. It's an Arca-Swiss workalike that costs a tiny fraction of what a real Arca would (20% of the real cost for 80% of the quality). The real Arca is a ~$450 piece of kit..

I might upgrade to the Acratech UBH in the future ($290 with the rubberized main knob and detent locking pin that I want), but that day just got further away.

It'll even hold the 100-400 and 1D, which is the heaviest rig I currently operate. I bought it and spec'ed it originally for my Bigma, although the Bigma tends to challenge all but the highest end ballheads.

Glad I could help... I was initially skeptical about these, but my reseller was instrumental in letting me play with them in person. They then smacked a Nikkor 300/2.8 (Noink lovers, they.. :p) with an oldschool metal pro body onto it at 45 degs just to show me it could take the weight.. methinks by the time I go 300/2.8 it will be with a gimbal setup anyway! (fat hope of that happening)

My legset is also a Benro, their A127n6 ($100) aluminium. The difference between the carbon fiber version and the aluminium version was 100-200 grams, hardly enough to make a meaningful difference. While I like PG's Velbon 530 CF with flip-lock legs, that's a $270 tripod.. costs more than my whole setup put together!

After these, I see no reason to bother with the Dynatran stuff.. their legsets weigh more than mine PLUS ballhead, and carry less weight to boot.

the problem with my tripod is that it doesn't pan smoothly. It irritates me greatly. And it wasn't cheap...maybe I'm going to have to look for another head....

What ballhead are you using? I am actually doing some research on the 1-4 combo.. if you have the $$, I suggest you go for the Acratech UBH ($280 my configuration), plus Wimberley Sidekick ($250). It's not cheap, but put that on your Velbon and you have my dream rig for the 1-4. The Sidekick's huge advantage is that it renders the entire lens + camera assembly virtually weightless.

If you have ever steered a 36 POUND Canon 1200/5.6 with two fingers, it is a *BLAST* and absolutely eloquent tribute to proper head engineering - it justifies the $500 price tag immediately.

I pulled my 28-105 out of my bag this evening goofing around in my empty bar... I forgot how sharp and quiet it was... I haven't used it in months and now i'm thinking that I've been a bit unfair to it...

sari

I love my 28-105. I, too, have been neglecting my relationship with it. Sometimes, in the night, I hear it weep, and I feel pretty bad. Lately there have been evidences of little jealous "cat fights" between my 28-105 and my 70-300 DO. I'm sure that this weekend, in order to make amends, I'll have to take my 28-105 out for coffee or a movie. It's best not to get on the bad side of a lens. They tend to be a little vindictive. Lenses that are jealous or bitter tend to make shots that are OOF or just soft. Perhaps they'll focus a little more loudly than usual, scaring the away the object of the shot. I've lost many a good photographic opportunities for the simple reason that I've taken the relationship that I have with a lens for granted.

That's it. I've slipped a cog. More Starbucks...

The theory that the relationship that one has with one's lens directly influences the quality of the shot made with that same lens has been around for decades. Still in the early testing stages, it is still one of the best excuses of the "missed shot". Hence, the meaning behind the oft quoted phrase, "I think my lens hates me."

It makes more sense than the not oft quoted phrase, "Geez, I'm a goof with this camera stuff upon which I spent thousands of dollars."

You'd be surprised how many very feminine women are lesbians. The masculine looking lesbian is a stereotype. I just figure doing it this way gives the guy an out, so he can save face.

I'm not nearly as good as you guys on this thread, but I still have moments where I think that my lenses are out to get me. I have often wondered if there is a conspiracy being formed in my camera bag amongst the lenses to ensure that I never get that coveted "Bird In Flight" shot, or to make sure that telephone pole in the middle of the composition stays invisible until after I trigger the shutter.

Actually, it is not that much faster.. 4.5 on the long end is just a third of a stop slower. The other lens has its moments.. but they're definitely not in speed..

If you can live without IS go for the 24-70, or have it all - 17-55/2.8 IS!!

This bum goes up to a very attractive woman in a bar (yeah, of course it has to be a bar) and starts chatting her up. The woman turns around and tells the bum "You do, of course know that I'm a lesbian."

And the bum (being a bum) goes "Whatcha mean by that?"

"Well," says the woman, "I prefer women. I like the way they move, the way they look, and I would go to bed with one but not with a guy."

The bum's eyes go wide  and remarks "Well gee lady, I feel the same.. I think I must be a lesbian too!!"

He thought it was the other lens...4.5-5.6 but it's not. It's just that when I have my 24-105 on and he's got the 28-105, especially in low light, his has a harder time. We had the 24-70 but I sold it because he said he didn't want it. I think we are both regretting that sale now. I never used it but I think he would have liked it. This is the same man that said he didn't want the 1DMKIIN when I offered it to him. He always says he does photography for fun and "doesn't need" that gear. I've never known anyone who's such an anti-gear head....though he'll buy it for me so I'm not complaining.

And no, I don't think he's seen Cat's shots...but I've just been ranting about not getting a BIF shot for so long that it's run over I guess...

I THINK I know the reason behind the green and purple halation problem I experienced with 3 copies and I have a method to solve it. It's got something to do with my chosen test target not exactly being the best of all possible worlds.

You know there are operations that can fix that for ya. ;)

just in case if anyone is interested, I got a quote from canon yesterday. $ 558.74 to fix my 10D and my 28-135. It seems that canon is going to replace the IS and the AF on the lens and adjust the AF on the camera. $280 of that cost is labour :( but each is 3 years old so what can I do.

I just hope that it's all fixed with out any problems. one thing for sure is that I am going to be testing it out once I get it back.

Hmm.....just opened my 3rd party collar for the 70-200/4.

Powdercoat finish is not as nice as Canon's, but then again we are largely splitting hairs over here. It functions just fine, however, and the interior of the collar is lined with a nice felt-like material so as not to scratch the lens. My 100-400 collar has a little bit of felt and plastic inside, my Sigma collar is completely plastic lined. The 3rd party f/4L collar is completely felt.

My opinion of stuff from the Far East is that they typically get 80% of the quality, but at lower cost. This is quite OK in most circumstances because the large increase in cost is the remaining 20% of the performance or quality. (Pareto principle for those who are familiar with it). Wish it was 80% quality 20% of the cost though :D

I rather enjoy it. This year I tried to personalize each session in some way. The kids loved it, and I got oodles of bookings just by word of mouth. My Space has proven to be a great, free advertising tool as well. My page is all about senior portraiture. I don't know how I'd keep up if I advertised. I may put up a display at graduation next to the table where my friend and I sell the senior video, trade some sports shots for advertising, and maybe even put some flyers on bulletin boards at school. Now that the word is out, I really don't have to do much, as this is an extremely small town.

I can't decide if I want the 17-55 or the 24-70. I'll probably go for a good, used copy of the 24-70, though, since my eventual goal is a full frame body. And I know if I want a good one, all I have to do is ask Ronald. :)

I haven't brought it up cause I was completely depressed.. not just cause I had to give him away but because dammit!! I like cats.. I really do and I went years and years as a kid without being allergic to them I truly thought it would be okay.. it seems like the older I get the sicker I get... just not fair...

My sister lives in Portland, Permie. I've heard it's absolutely beautiful there.

I keep telling you that you should come out. I prefer the coast to the city, but I'll never leave Oregon. We have every type of climate from rainforest to desert...it's a microcosm of the world in one place.

I can't decide if I want the 17-55 or the 24-70. I'll probably go for a good, used copy of the 24-70, though, since my eventual goal is a full frame body. And I know if I want a good one, all I have to do is ask Ronald. :)

personally myself I would be going for the 24-70. I do plan to upgrade to this lens once money permits. in replacing the 28-135. I don't use IS that offen. I consider the 2.8 of more vaule than the 105.

and on a crop camera the lens will rock for portraits :)

I'm really sorry to hear it. I can understand how depressing that would be!
Maybe someday you can take allergy shots for your cat allergies. I've heard it helps. BTW, I have 4 cats. 2 indoor, 2 outdoor...do you have allergy medicine at all?

If time and money permitted me to do so, I definitely would. Travel is out of the question right now, though. :(

that's not nice :( at least you can still see him. perhaps you should get some gold fish. they are really cool to photograph :)

sure they can't cuddle up with ya on a cold day and you wont be allergic to them.

I rarely use wide angle, and the IS on lenses with shorter focal lengths is kind of overrated, IMO. I've heard so many good things about the 17-55, but the EF-S will probably be the thing that deters me from buying it. The guys in the G&N forum seem to use the 24-70 when they aren't using primes for portrait shots. If it's good enough for them, then it's good enough for me. :D
