If time and money permitted me to do so, I definitely would. Travel is out of the question right now, though. :(

Well, we'll be here, whenever the time happens...it'll just be something to look forward to.

very similar to Idaho we do live in an incredible little corner of the world.. I can't imagine me settling anywhere else.. Ofcourse I plan on moving around until i'm ready to settle down...

sari

I love Oregon but I wish I'd seen the world before I settled down. Puddle was in the military so he saw a lot of the US but I never actually left Oregon once I got here.

personally myself I would be going for the 24-70. I do plan to upgrade to this lens once money permits. in replacing the 28-135. I don't use IS that offen. I consider the 2.8 of more vaule than the 105.

and on a crop camera the lens will rock for portraits :)

I liked the 24-70 but didn't use the 2.8 enough to compensate for the lack of range...I really use the whole scope of the 24-105...

I'm really sorry to hear it. I can understand how depressing that would be!
Maybe someday you can take allergy shots for your cat allergies. I've heard it helps. BTW, I have 4 cats. 2 indoor, 2 outdoor...do you have allergy medicine at all?

it depends I can take the over the counter stuff and that gets rid of everything but my asthma symptoms which my flovent can take care of.. to a point, but I still have attacks which are more annoying and inconvenient.. I was fine with ansel living with me I just couldn't keep him off my bed and I woke up in pretty bad shape a few times.. But I have problems no matter where I'm at. I don't plot my life around my maybe having an attack. If I do I have meds I know what my limits are what I can deal with, what will just annoy me and what will send me to the ER.. and even if I do end up going to the hospital it's a routine that isn't nearly as dramatic for me as it is for those around me... I almost feel worse to whoever gets stuck in the waiting room or sitting with me for hours then for myself..

I wish they made a 24-105 in 2.8, but I imagine it would be a heavy bugger. With all the low light stuff I do, I just don't want a lens slower than that.

it would probably be heavier than Maureen's 85mm 1.2 which she says is a monster to carry around..

I'm waiting for that too.. 24-105 2.8 ISL.. :)

I might opt to carry it despite the weight too, because this is one lens I'd actually use enough to warrant the weight, cost, and size. Then keep the 24-105 as lightweight walkaround. My impression is that such a beast might be 70-200 2.8 size...

True it probably would be huge, if I was shooting portraits mainly, or fast action, I probably would have kept the other lens. And I would have kept the 70-200 f/2.8 (I'm still sorry I sold that one but it was also a "heavy bugger") too.

And Sari, I'm no stranger to an E.R. (remember I'm accident prone) so no worries there ;)
I don't blame you for not planning your life around it. I've got things I deal with that I don't plan my life around either.

Oi ;) don't make me change my mind now ;)

Are you getting the f4L version for the days you don't want to pack the 1-4?

we can have a meet with Puddle and Perma... where are you at?..

Currently in Australia. Other End of the World. As you can imagine, it is fairly far away

I rather enjoy it. This year I tried to personalize each session in some way. The kids loved it, and I got oodles of bookings just by word of mouth. My Space has proven to be a great, free advertising tool as well. My page is all about senior portraiture. I don't know how I'd keep up if I advertised. I may put up a display at graduation next to the table where my friend and I sell the senior video, trade some sports shots for advertising, and maybe even put some flyers on bulletin boards at school. Now that the word is out, I really don't have to do much, as this is an extremely small town.

I can't decide if I want the 17-55 or the 24-70. I'll probably go for a good, used copy of the 24-70, though, since my eventual goal is a full frame body. And I know if I want a good one, all I have to do is ask Ronald.

Actually, I just realized that Myspace may have been the best possible place for you to advertise to HS seniors. You use the same media they do, which makes you 'one of them', then they'll all add you to their buddy lists, and when the question of "Who's gonna take the photos" comes up the answer is already there and waiting. Of course you don't need to sink to the same level of depravity as some of the stuff I see on Myspace though

How soon do you plan to move up to full frame? If it is still a year or two off, you could have a blast with the 17-55. At the same time, you mentioned to me that your requirements don't need the wide end as much (mine do.. can't live without my 17 whether on crop or FF), but definitely need the aperture so the 24-70/2.8 may be the best bet for you anyway. The 24-70's strengths are in portraiture, weddings, and flash work.

That sounds like a plan! You're never too old to start!
(and, this is a true story, I learned how to ride a bike when I was 30...so you've still got time! My husband bought me a bike, took me to a parking lot (this is so embarrassing) and there I was with my helmet and my bike and I crashed into parking bumpers and rode off curbs...fell into the street...my children thought it was hysterical as well....I was a child who was also "over protected"...so there are a lot of things that I never did until I became an adult...)

Yes, Lightstream, in the spring I'm going to make a choice btw. 4 lenses:
85 1.2
50 1.2
400 5.6
70-200 f4 IS....

I can't decide which one would be more valuable to me so I'm waiting (plus I'm still paying off that exercise gear...on which I kill myself every other day and wonder WHY I AM DOING IT!)

You never know, but canon might release a cheaper full frame next year? by that time the 5D might be up for refresh. it might even be weather sealed, which isn't a biggie for indoors work, but working outside etc it would be good.

However it's hard to tell at this stage. I mean there are some out there that use the 70-200 F2.8 for portrait work. it comes down to own style of work. EF-S isn't going to be any good going full frame.

Don't worrie Sari, there was a number of things I could do when I was kid. skateboard was one, roller blades is another. I don't see it has something I have to do. I can live with out. I would rather spend time learning more important things.

YEAP :)

Sneak preview before I use it on new lens next week :D

Actually come to think of it, I used to commute on a mountain bike all the time. For 3 years. Rain or shine. (water makes interesting splatter patterns. Don't ask me how I know..) Uphill and downhill too.. bloody hills.

I averaged 75km a week (nearly 50mi). And I could eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I wanted, in any quantity, no matter how sinful, and the weight would just absolutely fall off me like oil off a nonstick pan.

NO no...we've all got it wrong...we're supposed to say "I don't skateboard well..." so, from now on we just say..."well, not well anyway"...when asked if we can do something. Because I guarantee I can sky dive. How I land, of course, is another matter!

While my general rule for technology is live for today, to heck with tomorrow, you've got some very good points. I never expected to move FF, when I built my EF-S system (at one point I owned every EF-S lens in production!), affordable full frame was still a dream - back then it meant 1Ds!

Never dreamed Canon would one day show up with the 5D. I did sell the system at minimal losses but if you KNOW it is on your workplan and can give yourself a timeframe, then it probably makes sense to plan for a FF future. I planned to stay EF-S, actually.

The 5D's replacement won't instantly obsolete my camera, but I would be very interested in seeing what they have to offer. Weather sealing would complement my lenses nicely.

45-point Area AF and 5fps and I can sell my 1Dinosaur ;)

well I don't sound as accident prone as you, but I was hit by a car while waiting to cross the road. nothing really major and I didn't fall on the ground. but the strange thing was I was standing by the car as the driver got in to it. somehow the women forgot I was there.

I bike to work, which takes me the same amount of time to drive. anyway again some idiot didn't see me and pulled out in font. by the time I hit the car, everyone was slow enough for no damage. However my pedal did hit the front corner of his car and his bumper came clean off. as for me no damage :)

If Canon found a way to make it lighter, they'd sell millions of them. That, to me, would be the perfect lens.

I'd like to have the 2.8 version of the 70-200, but now I have the Sigma at work. It's pretty similar and is just as heavy. I just don't have much use for f/4 lenses, although I keep my 70-200 f/4 for outdoor senior pics and spring sports.

I'm not sure how soon I'll do the full frame thing. I wouldn't mind getting a 5D for weddings after I upgrade my computer system. My dream camera is the 1D MkIIN, though. God, I want one of them! Could you imagine the sports shots I'd get with that thing?

Oh, I've seen some truly crazy blogs and stuff.. myspace is huge, depends where you look or accidentally click, and of course I don't have examples because their rantings are not something I want to remember! :D

I was gonna suggest the 1Dinosaur to you.. actually this is hardly "Dino", since it was in production till 2004. 45 point AreaAF and 8fps with their legendary AI Servo still takes every other non-1-series Canon DSLR out for a ride. Shutter release is crisp and clean and SO MUCH faster with greatly reduced finder blackout. In the hands of a klutz like me, I've gotten horse jumping photos with the horses frozen just at the perfect moment as they go over the jumps.. the folks I'm shooting for are thrilled. In your hands.. I'm sure we would all be utterly blown away :)

The 8fps was useful. I don't chaingun it either (because of reduced buffer), I fire controlled bursts of 2 or 3 shots while timing it. I have discovered smaller horses jump FAST - they can actually take off and land between the 5D's 3fps, so you never get shots where it really is airborne. 1D changed all of that.

My 1D thread seems to have inspired its own cult following too. I got mine for less than the price of a 30D.
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=222957

One of the drawbacks of the 1D is poorer high ISO performance, you have to spend a bit of time denoising it. The other drawback is poor in-camera JPEG but even for Lazy JPEG Shooters like me, the solution is simple. Given your RAW workflow it won't even slow you down. I shoot RAW and then use DPP to finish the job and the shots come out looking like my 5D

RAW is easy to manage too, the RAWs of the 1D are the same size as 5D JPEGs (~3MB). A 2GB card is plenty of ammo. Is 4MP OK for what you do?

Battery life is the last downside, but third party packs are $29.95 each and the NP-E2 charger is awesome because you can charge TWO packs simultaneously. Nevertheless, with a two battery setup and the Sigma 70-200, I can fire ~400 shots on one battery before changing out, and this is with AI Servo tracking my subject. Third-party packs have somewhat more capacity as they use modern NiMH cells.

OTOH the 5D is breathtaking as well. Get one and you'll realize why PG and I have to have our paws PRIED away from ours :D

Yup.. the 5D is pretty sweet, you can get ready-to-use results out of it quite often, I do. If Canon follows the 18 month cycle, the 5D may be replaced early next year. Mine will most certainly NOT be on the used market though :D

Just beware, some people have had problems with image quality, with the camera sometimes out doing the lens. I hurd the same thing from those that use the 1Ds series cameras. You might end up spending more on lens. eeek.

They actually have it contained now....the wind died down at sunset...gave them the break they needed....had 3 helicopters dropping retardant and water, with a crew of about 250 on the ground. Long day for some of the guys...started just after 7 this morning...started releasing fire crews around midnight.

that's good. Australia gets a lot of fires which we see on the news each summer. we offen get some small ones, but nothing major. still most of them are caused by those who have nothing better to do :(

Other than playing with a 600 on a Wimberley....no. I'm not big on birds...and don't really have a need for a birding lens or set-up.

That is true :D But her L's and primes should be just fine. Prime lenses have IQ to spare and that is one of the nice things about them. Even the 50, I shot my 50/1.8 for a while and it was pretty decent.

Long lenses are not so long all of a sudden though - that is one of the disadvantages. You can do a 'digital 1.3X' crop and get essentially what is functionally equivalent to a 1DM2N image, 8MP with 1.3X magnification ratio, because the CMOS detectors are the same physical size.

It's true! It doesn't do well with a lot of lenses....someone here (can't remember who) said that it accentuates the flaws in the cheaper lenses....though my 70-300 DO IS (one of my all time favorite lenses) was NOT cheap and still doesn't do as well on the 5D as it did on every other camera I've had. But all the lenses I currrently own, do just fine, including the Tamron macro and almost all my husband's lenses work w/it as well.

And Lightstream, those sunset photos I took yesterday, they were all with the tamron. It happened to be in my bag and it was the only thing other than the 1-4 that I had with me...it's a great lens.

Because the 100 macro has FTM, USM and internal focus for not a lot more money :p (B&H pricing) and it's a real Canon too...

I just read how useful FTM is on certain lenses in certain situations. I never use it on my ultrawides or my standard zoom, but on long tele's and on macros, it was recommended that I 'guide' the focus to the approximate area and let AF pick up the rest, resulting in much faster AF. I've been doing this with the 60 macro for a long time and probably would not appreciate having to switch to MF. Also, no more DC focus drive stuff for me - has to be USM/HSM. Tamron has no ultrasonic technology.

True but the Tamron focuses faster even w/o it and locks on focus even in the lowest of lights...I know you are prejudice against Tamron, but sometime just TEST the lens. It outshoots my husband's canon macro, in both color and saturation and focuses faster. Sharpness to the edges is about the same.

Set high speed sync - press button with H next to lightning bolt
Test flash - press red PILOT button
Pull down diffuser panel - pull gently
Adjust flash angle - press button at side and move the head

i'm aware of the EF-S on the Tammy and that will have to be re-evaluated... Is the 28-75 EFS as well? the 28-105 will probably stick around but won't be a major contender on a 5D the L will be lovely and I will more than likely pick up the 85mm 1.8 for the 5D either that or the 50mm 1.4 on a full frame I probably won't have the same issues with the legnth that I do on the XT but this is all in theory anyway... I may pick up the 30D to let the crop work for me while i'm in Africa and then go FF when I come home... lots of time to decide...

Lightstream

28-75 is a full EF mount, will work on the 5D. It'll feel like the 17-50 as far as focal length is concerned, so no big issue there.

Crop would probably be nice in Africa. That way you can hang on to your 17-50 as well. Shooting a long lens on a crop camera is a blast.. definitely the way to go :)

Either that or keep the XT for Africa, the 30D offers no substantial improvements in image quality, then think about the upgrade when you get back. No point selling camera bodies, they depreciate way too fast.. unlike glass, the cameras are now subject to the computer-style depreciation curves - a race to the bottom! the silver lining, I suppose, is that you can make this work for you, by waiting on the 5D.

The primes will work out, as you have imagined.

Do you have a flash or need a flash? The 5D has no onboard - they sacrificed that for the much bigger and brighter pentaprism. I used to think it was an issue, not so much nowadays.

I'm not at my best in the mornings. the only good thing I can say is that the alarm will wake me up and I will be here.. whether I'll trip over my feet, fall asleep organizing menus or generally walk around like a zombie I can't say.. Ofcourse there is the little matter of my very akward and I am now believing unnecessary decision to give up coffee... (what was I thinking  ) that contributes quite a bit... it takes me about three to four hours before i'm human after waking up.. and the more i'm thinking about it the more I want an espresso maker for Christmas.. and then I think back a few months ago and I was sure there was a real reason behind my not wanting to have my usual three double shots with foam a day... But it's 6:40 in the morning and now is not the time to try to go on a mission of self discovery..

I have an old speedlight that I bought from the lady in my camera store works very well so no complaints about it.. I will absolutely keep my XT there's no reason to give it up and in Africa atleast when I buy either the 100-400 or the bigma the crop will absolutely be to my advantage.. but, whether I pick up a 5D for the trip as well for the 'everything not telephoto related' category has yet to be determined.. I do like the idea of the primes but, again time and income will tell...

No, it is not a good time I agree.. spoil yourself, get a small cup of coffee.

I definitely need mine to kickstart the day - I suspect I am a road hazard on the move without sufficient caffiene, so the justifications are very clear cut. When I'm not working I drink less, generally one coffee a day is fine and most likely another coke somewhere in the afternoon. When I am, it depends on the stress level.. some days all bets are off and the coffee is unlimited. Thankfully those are days are few and far between...

I like it way toooo much.. I don't like regular cofee though (it tastes watered down to me) i'm more of an espresso girl and there the trouble lies... very addictive stuff. I was getting a bit extreme with it before I left home and if memory serves I was becoming a little concerned at my dependence... Hence the decision to lay off of it... But, months later I still haven't quite gotten used to going without. this could either mean one of two things either I should give up the fight go back to my twelve dollar a day coffee habit or that I truly did have myself stuck on it and it's a good thing i've quit.....

Flash should be fine if it works on your XT.. the XT and 1-4 are a blast, I was just playing with that combo. Still value my XT even though I have the big guns. 640mm at f/5.6 on the long end is FUN!!

It's also interesting.. I've travelled to the US before (Yellowstone, where I got my SLR calling), and I found that the 'normal' coffee over there is very, very different from the normal stuff here, where it's thick, black and strong, similar to the stuff that comes out of my coffee percolator early in the morning. At first I thought I'd done something wrong with the US coffee, until someone else I was with told me that's the way they drink it.. :D the stuff we make out here would be similar to the Starbucks Americano.. similar concentration and texture.

I can definitely see why you drink espresso though.. I wouldn't bother with anything else over there.

allthough i've never been out of the States (yet) I've heard that we don't do coffee nearly as well as other countries and I tend to believe ya.. Yellowstone is a lovely place i'm planning on moving there for a season the summer after next.. I can definately see how you would be drawn to photography from being there.. it's only nine hours from me and I'm ashamed to say I haven't been in two years :( .. no excuse at all... where do you live?..

Do it.. the resorts are beautiful :) many of the staff I encountered were in a similar position to you, who were there for the job and the benefits of being able to see the place.

I read stuff like this about my favorite animal:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_reintroduction#Yellowstone_National_Park_and_ Idaho

And it almost makes me want to dump everything, buy the Canon 400mm Diffractive Optics f/4 IS USM (not an L, surprisingly), a gimbal head, pair of 1DM2N's and move to Yellowstone to photograph those awesome beasts.

My work has currently taken me to Australia, as my photography will give away. Home is many hours north by plane, somewhere in the exotic Far East ;) while it sounds like a great adventure, it wears off after a while and for this Christmas all I ask for is a 724ISL and the ability to go back and drink coffee with my crew back home :D

I can't go to links on my work computer but if you're referring to wolves they're not exactly popular in this part of the country.. they have done terrible things to the Elk and Buffalo population in Yellowstone and even in my mountains.. When they were contained and their populations monitored it wasn't soo bad but they have been allowed free reign the last half a dozen years or so and the results have been disastrous.. Even going to Yellowstone now as a casual tourists you will notice how much they have damaged the herds... Now, i'm not a shoot 'em dead kind of girl.. but, I don't believe that one kind of animal should be able to thrive at the expense of many others.. Yellowstone believes in being left as natural as it can.. part of me agrees with them.. If a fire is going to go through then there's probably a reason and the earth will repair itself but on the other side we have developed into a society that can repair and prevent some pretty terrible things from happening and i'm just not sure why we can't use all of the tools available to us to make wise decisions... but then I get started on the politicis of it which are best left alone...

Howdy ~w....things are grand here...the forest service took over the fire at midnight...and by morning all was contained. Several houses suffered damage...but no total losses....the best news is no injuries to people or pets.

Local fire personnel are mopping up hot spots and the forest service crews have moved on to a fire about 45 minutes south of here that has gone wild...can't believe idiots are trying to burn stuff outside in weather like this...humidity is around 15% and winds gust to 50 mph....no rain in close to 3 weeks....DUH!
