According to legend and Procol Harum....there are 16 of them in Vestal, NY. However, I grew up not all that far from there...and most of the guys I know spent all their free time in search of the elusive Vestal Virgins...to the best of my knowledge, none of my crowd ever found one. But perhaps Kevin might have better luck...he needs a break in something!;)
I KNEW you were gonna say that. :);)

 You guys...something funny just happened! My daughter asked us to shoot her engagement photos...(suddenly I was very glad Dan bought me the 85L). Anyway, I thought...wouldn't it be too amusing (or perhaps it's just my twisted sense of humor) to start a thread in the wedding forum entitled:
"Another Newb taking bread out of your mouths...please help"
p.s. seriously though, if the 85L doesn't communicate ttl w/the camera (which I've read it doesn't) how do you adjust flash exposure? Trial and error?

A- no clue about the 85L... with my 85 1.8 (which was way cheaper and still has pretty bokeh ;-) I shoot on M mode, ISO 400, 1/250, f/4 ... and then adjust up or down...
B- hahah - that is a funny title... But you really don't need to be super fancy.
On the Seattle POTN day we ran into a pro-photographer taking engagement shots of a couple. He was just using his L and SLR, no flash...
He then had our group take photos of the couple (like they were famous) and he took a photo of them with us in the background... (Very funny shot) - but with no real aiming of my camera - not metering, nothing fancy I got a shot like:
http://www2.sandynet.org/potn/POTN-NW-033107/IMG_5376.jpg
It could be a lot better, but I was very happy with it considering how little work I had to do.

I have found it harder to figure out my 580EX than any of my lenses, Lisa. I shot a bunch of pics at a retirement talent show last Sat. night and tried a few things....but the flash unit remains a mystery. Try to shoot your daughter outside:D

That's a good idea Scott...I do pretty well w/o flash (that's what I'm used to) and using a reflector would work for making sure there was no shadow on their faces.
The "engagement" isn't official yet...so I have time to learn (and there's NO WAY I'm really posting on the wedding forum). I know I can get the help I need here. I've shot portraits before but only with the 135L (which I no longer own) and it communicated w/the flash thru the cam. SO I'm just a bit confused...

I getcha! My 580 flash is totally confusing. I mastered all the stupid button combos on the MKIIN before I figured the flash out (actually, I still haven't figured it out except how to dial it down so it's not at full strength...)

So, I have tried many lenses with my 430EX ... my 50 f/1.8, my late Tokina and my 85 f/1.8 --- when shooting under "P" mode it would give me a shutter speed of 1/60 ... then with "M" and the settings above I got an image that looked better than "P" mode...
Does that mean my lenses aren't talking to the camera right?

I don't know...I'm the last person that could answer a flash question. I'm only aware of the 85 thing because I read in a review of the new 85L II (we bought the used version one) that:
Now with distance information. Unlike its predecessor, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM Lens passes distance information to the E-TTL II flash algorithm. This lens is going to show up at a lot of weddings and other similar events where flash is often used. Adding this parameter to the flash exposure computation is beneficial.
so this is what's confusing me...
For your question, I think when you change from manual to program mode, some of the parameters change which causes a different reading in the flash (I'm just hypothesizing here...ask Wool :D )

I would think that it still works in TTL mode... maybe not TTL II, but plain-jane TTL... I don't know - haha. I have the umbrellas, and the radio slaves, etc - I have fun with it all, but I have no idea what the heck is going on...

Short answer... don't shoot in P mode :). Long answer do some searching but I recall that for some odd reason P sticks to 1/60. Why not shoot AV or TV or M? Most the time when I use a flash I will stick it at 1/250 and adjust apeture and ISO as needed. You avoid WB issues and its just all easier that way. Someone can correct me if I am way off base, but that is how I do things :D

Thank ya kindly ma'am.
All of those were with the 70-200 F4 @ f4 and about 1/500 between ISO 200-500 as the lighting changed to keep a shutter speed that stops action (for the most part bats and balls are faster than people sometimes :) ).

:D Thanks Wanda. I found a bunch of flower shots today when I was looking for my pansy "macro". I'd used the 24-70 and the MKIIN with these and I'd FORGOTTEN how beautiful the colors were...for some reason, after I bought the 5D I never looked back and while that's good in one way (I won't "re-buy" it) I am pretty happy with a lot of shots I took with it...now I'm having to search my archives and see what else I'd forgotten. (though I do wish I'd clipped that dead head off that one iris!)

I used scott's weekend before last and it was nice when the field lights came on, but I probably could have survived with the 4 by dropping the shutter speed a bit more. I have realized that for the most part it doesn't need to be as fast as you would think (tho admittedly the faster the better...) to stop humans and a little motion blur on a bat or ball is a nice way to imply motion.
My further thoughts on using the f4 versus the 2.8. I like the fact it is super light comparatively. And I feel that its easier to quickly manipulate the zoom ring (since it is smaller), so on a double play it is easier to go from 3rd to 1st. I am also in debate about mono pods. It was really nice not having to hold the 2.8 but I found it kind of awkward to quickly move and zoom and rotate (but that could be that I am not used to it). Anyways, thats my 2 cents on the whole thing!

http://www.the-aperture.com/EE/photos/large/IMG_0800.jpg (big rescue of deep shadow, but love the look it gave)
http://www.the-aperture.com/EE/photos/large/IMG_0779.jpg
Awesome. I did bitch to the service center that my 5D and 24-105 were the Chosen Ones.
The thing I love most about the 24-105 and the 17-85 are their awesome reliability. The 17-85 in particular has withstood sun, sea, sand, rain, being cooked in a car boot/trunk (UK/US ;) ), jammed zoom ring, spent time at repair dock (different facility back home - and they DID fix it instead of declaring it was 'within spec'), flown as check-in luggage in nothing but a daypack, awesome sharp from 28-85mm, the whole nine yards. Bit weak at 17mm, but the most endearing thing about this lens - 15K frames later, it keeps firing shot after shot after shot.. legendary reliability appeals to me.
But he has spent so much time and money on this issue... I doubt he would want to drive out there again and have to hand him over his 30D for a few weeks...
I can understand that...I just hate to see him taking such a loss (if he can't sell it and can't use it). Poor guy...just trying to problem solve over here...
I wonder why it won't work on his camera and will on theirs...too weird!
Yes, that is pretty much the reason why. After going through so much pain you finally decide to cut your losses. My time is valuable too, and after spending so much dealing with this situation, I can't afford any more. In fact I haven't been this happy to wake up and see Paypal for the longest time - yes I finally let it go, and yes I made doubly sure the buyer knows what he is getting. To make up for it, I gave him a very special price.
Kevin...you need to sacrifice a virgin or something. You have more bad mojo and doo-doo than 50 people should have...:(
Sacrifice? Naah, I would ask her out... but knowing my luck she's taken :(
I did however do the next best thing.
It's almost Easter and I put my @ss on a plane back home - if for just a short while. Believe me that is worth more than glass. Maybe it will break this evil spell.

Now I know it is running since I can login and get my welcome sounds etc, but the Lcd or the video card (or both) are not working. It has been intermitted last week and then it worked once this weekend and now all day I was trying to get it to turn on with no success! BAH.. I hate tech support, even as a small business customer it sucks! Least the 3 yr warranty came included and they rush ship stuff. So if I have to send it in, it won't be too long (I hope).

The 85 L Mk I will do E-TTL II. It just won't communicate distance info to the camera, thus to the flash. But it'll work just like most any other EF lens that doesn't communicate distance (and that's most of the non-L glass and a bunch of the Ls too).

My daffies are gone as are the paperwhites and hyacinth. Lilacs have started clooming but they're pretty sparse this year. Looks pathetic.
I accidentally killed my only tulip during that midnight rain shoot. I gave one to TPBM chat last night . you guys get one tonight. I am going to take more shots using just the porchlight one of these days. gonna use a tripod though!

You know, I have to pay for a wedding soon. And I will not pay exhorbitant prices for a photographer. What the pros don't realize is that with the advent of software and the new digital age, the margin btw what they can do and an average photographer (I'm not talking about a non-photographer) is very small.
