Well, I was really pleased with the 85 today. (the only thing I don't like is the minimum focus distance) but otherwise, I am just thrilled with this lens :)

Are you shooting that wide open, Lisa?

aussieskier

But they're good to eat, so it's all good.. sushi!

This is what happens when the tourism advertising campaigns backfire, often these campaigns are the only introduction to the culture that most people have and the one that sticks with them. If there are inaccuracies then they will stick, sometimes for decades (the campaign dates back to '86).

Don't look at me, I have been in AU for a cumulative total of 5+ years and I know their ways, they have more of a drinking problem, I hardly ever see the shrimp anyway ;)

Steve was a good dude, while I don't appreciate his presentation style, I do appreciate the serious conservation work he did 'behind the scenes'. It was hard to look past the presentation and see the meaning though.

I too deal with the stereotypes from home.. but I have learned to deal with them in good grace, usually by inviting others and offering to show them a chance to see it for themselves :)

Usually a popular gripe is that our law enforcement is overly heavy handed. Truth to be told, I've never ever been stopped or talked to all these years, the worst I have ever gotten was a parking ticket for parking where I shouldn't have (and I kinda deserved that because I should have known better and still did it anyway :p)

(and I got more tickets in AU in six months than I have gotten in a LIFETIME back home......WTF!!!!!)
I am sure that Irwin did good things behind the screen I just can't stand him on screen! The problem with bringing people over and showing them "my ways" is that its damn hard to get good sausage and various other bbq worthy foods here!

And yep...nice flahrs Permie...add a tube to the 85 if the MFD is too long.

You can have the sushi...where I come from, raw seafood is known as bait! Serving raw fish, meat or poultry is gross. That's why we have fire.

No, that's why I microwave my steak to ensure that the center is all cooked through.

There's a little bit of irony in the fact that you like your steak raw in the center ;) (a real rare steak should be nearly raw in the center)

Oh dear, now that is a tough life. I thought the US was the land of good meats, or is it just Boring? ;)

We adapt.. I'd use solid cuts of meat instead, if possible.

I can definitely agree with you that there is absolutely nothing like food from home, even when you're far and away. I eat lots when I'm back home too :)

I'll say this much, AU sausage is quite unique. I'm used to things like frankfurters and so on, which you get in hotdogs around the world, but the AU sausage seems in a class of its own. The texture and the skin are noticeably VERY different... here's your chance to edjumacate me on its finer points ;)

I dunno the uniqueness the why they cook it and the seasonings they us just seem so perfect for one another. I think something that you don't find here is lamb and garlic etc. That is probably my favorite, along with risoles. I dunno its hard to explain I just know it is amazing! Along with meat pies and pasties (spelling Pahstee is how it is said).

Ahh, the rissoles and the meat pies are definitely unique. For those who have eaten either, no explanation is necessary. You're right, the secret is in the seasoning. I have never eaten a meat pie anywhere else in the world that has quite that particular taste.

Mooo!

What's new?

I spent the day in San Diego with Alyssa, my sons, and some of the kids from the youth group at our church. We went to the USS Midway, walked over to Seaport Village for some very expensive chow, bought some hot salsa and some habanero jelly beans, drove across the Coronado bridge, circled around part of the Hotel Del Coronado, stopped at one of the beaches for a few minutes, and then drove home. I'm tired...

Now, can anyone guess who my avatar is? And Alyssa, keep your fingers off the keyboard...

You sure guessed it fast. My MIL got Alyssa some Perry Mason DVD's for Christmas, and I've discovered that Tragg is probably my most favorite character. If there were a Lt. Tragg fan club, I'd be a member...

Puds - nice TR, very, umm, odd ;-)

Perry Mason is cool, I still watch that from time to time. Jessica Fletcher never did anything for me. Columbo is cool, great mind ;-) Rockford Files was also a good show...

And she should have used your 85/1.2L to bokeh out the background :)

Speaking of lenses, my FIRST ever post to POTN I believe was asking about whether I should buy the 35 f/2. I suspect I am about to come full circle, and buy the 35/2 at long last - a year and a half late.

Then someone will ban me from POTN and the circle will be complete :p

pretty much what I mean. It's a hassle. And WTD is good stuff, too. It's almost impossible to break into that market.

I've considered doing a one-off thing; not syndicate, but a book/collection. But then you have the whole publishing merry-go-round. Yikes.

Look at self-publishing, say with Lulu. Rain, who does Ozy and Millie (http://www.ozyandmillie.org/) was being published by Plan9, but got fed up with their performance and is now self-publishing that way. I ran a calendar for our Peke rescue group through them too, and they're quite good and easy to work with.

Dinner and games with friends. Laughed so hard that my sides hurt.

They are really competitive so there is usually at least one yelling match where names are called. In the beginning it was really unnerving, but now it's just funny as heck. Usually some good nicknames come out of it. Kind of like the title fairy does.

Hi everybody. I thought I might join in here. Hopefully you can forgive me for only catching up on the last 10 or so pages ... and also for not fully comprehending what this thread is actually about ;-)

And for the record, the only time I have ever cooked prawns (aka shrimp) was on a BBQ. Then again, I don't cook very often and that was with my Maltese in-laws ... so you're probably right that BBQ'ing prawns isn't overly Aussie :-D

You must be basing your opinion on the junk they sell down in NC. Habbersetts makes an outstanding scrapple; I stock up whenever I get up into their distribution area. Proper spices are essential. My sister likes Kunzler's, but that's too liver-heavy for my taste.

Yeah we all thought it would be fun. I got home last night and a few friends were over and I told them that I had invited 97,409 people to the house for a BBQ some time this summer for a book signing and a photoshoot of all of our cars. You should have seen the smiles. Then the number sunk in. LOL

Hey Permie...perhaps since you won't be in Alabama this summer we could try something like this brainstorm. I would love to have my book signed by all the Tuppervillagers and TPBM regulars that I can get. I don't know how many of us it will ultimately be, but if everyone was interested, I think it could be done fairly simply for those of us in the US...might be a bit more difficult to get our folks from beyond the border, but not impossible.

Basically it involves finding out how many of our folks are interested in having a signed book. Everyone that wants a signed copy ships their books to me or whoever...I sign each of the books and then send it to the next person on the list...they sign them all and forward it on to the next person until all of us have signed. If there was a meet or something where more than one person was present, it would speed up the process.

Just a thought...........

Wool....I don't mean to be a wet blanket.....but it reminds me of an interesting story I had.

I did a gear passaround, something like Nifty's journey. Got everybody to sign a scrapbook, write something fun and put in a photo. We actually made it, all the way to the end, and I was quite pleased.

While said piece of gear was in the last recipient's kitchen, the kitchen burned down thanks to something catching fire. Sounds ludicrous? Sure is.

The scrapbook escaped the fire, but got lost in the mail.

This guy was a respected, trusted member of the community in exceptional standing, so I have reason to believe that the kitchen really did burn down. It's not worth burning down half the house to run off with $30 of stuff.

Traditional scrapple is made with ANY part of a pig that isn't nailed down. The prime flavor is liver, but kidneys, heart, tongue and other entrails are generally included. Then it is mixed with corn meal and flour...spiced and fried in lard...at least that is how the Amish purists do it. I'm not a big fan of organ meats to begin with...hearts are ok...and I don't really much care for corn meal. I guess I will just have to have bacon instead...

PG/puddle: I test drove the 35/2 today.. and I am VERY impressed. The focus is dead-on accurate. While resolving power wide open is not quite on par with the 24-105 f/4L wide open, I do recall the 24-105 is already two stops down (f/4 vs f/2.0). And the difference is so close that I actually have to compare two crops side by side to tell. I'm suitably impressed.

Love the 35/2 on the 5D. Never thought I would be impressed with a 35mm ever again, for years I lived with 35mm as a LIMITATION on a P&S. Of course, now I can just switch down to my 17-40/4.....

It sounds good. One step closer to my 35/2.

I really like that lens...it really is nice and sharp (it's colors are very good too...definitely one of those "best lenses for a reasonable price")...and it has a nice min. focusing distance too...the ONLY thing I remember not liking about it was when I wanted to take a photo of a deer (I had a telephoto on and Puddle had the 35) and he focused quite loudly on a plant and scared the deer away

Yeah the buzzing hornet AFD has a habit of giving you away :) however I will be using this at indoor events, which are typically noisy enough nobody will notice another photog. And once I bust out the flashgun, they will ALL know I am here anyway

The 28/1.8 is almost 2X the price and while I really liked that lens I'm not in the mood to spend so much money. The 35/2 seems to be another hidden gem, lots of bang for the buck and so much more than the horrible 50/1.8.

MFD is good, 25cm, just like the 28/1.8. However, due to higher magnification you actually get 0.23X mag ratio, instead of a 0.18X.. that is nice.

I used my 28/1.8 on the 1D a fair bit, essentially turning it into a 36/1.8 USM.. now that the 1D is gone I won't have to worry about that, but the 35/2 will be a true 35/2 on my 5D.

I take it then that the owner of your old 28 doesn't want to sell?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that.

New owner loves the 28/1.8 to death. Says it's now his second most used lens. Of course not willing to sell, but I understand perfectly because I know everything that makes it special.

So that leaves me with the tough executive decision of whether I want to go back to the 28/1.8. I've reiterated the things I love about the 35/2 in the previous post, but the part I like about the 28/1.8 is the build, USM/FTM, focus accuracy, and optical quality is good. I get a third of a stop, just a hint more speed to make up for slightly less bokeh. And I get better OOF highlights thanks to the 7-bladed aperture. Now the tough call is deciding whether all of that is worth 2X the money....

Plus, 44mm on a crop camera is more appealing to me than 56mm. I prefer to shoot wide.

Don't mind at all. Let me open the file and look at which of my adjustment layers I actually had active. It took me an awfully long time but I had many versions of it. I imagine there is a quicker way. I know one of the steps was that high pass sharpening then invert the layer thing.

Sorry, didn't take any self portraits.

I know the Boring Boys were clicking away like Stalkarazzi though. So I'm sure they'll oblige. You can search this thread and find some from our Oregon Coast Mini POTN Meet. Believe me, it's not worth the effort.

Uh, I'd have to search for it too, and it's really not worthy of the effort!

I think Perm is the one who posted them, so that's only about 15,000 posts to search through. Have fun with that. ;)
