RB and most energy drinks are nasty (IMHO)... Never tried vodka so can't say...

Red Bull is okay - only had it once... It tasted like Sweet Tarts!

BAWLS is good - my heart really got racing after three days of no sleep and three days of BAWLS! mmmm.... That was a weird feeling

Where's the Meany Head tonight?

Hiding....

Got a new cel phone today, and I'm trying to figure all the gadgets out. Also working on the TR's for the next few weeks... I'd like to get ahead somewhat so that I have a buffer....

Been there, done that a few years ago. Didn't like the aftertaste of RB.

All the energy drinks are strange tasting, but add some Vodka and look out. I believe people have had serious illnesses from drinking this

I am still under 21... and from what I taste with the Parentals and in Australia... I am a wine, beer and bourbon guy... NOT a vodka person (though we make this raspberry liquour from berries on the farm, that is really good. Lots of sugar :) ).

That is a lot of posts. I could not have another life if I was on here so much.

I am taking a vacation the first week in May. Skip & I are taking Aaron to Vegas for 3 days. He is dying to see Treasure Island and the volcano waterfalls at the Mirage so we thought we better take him before school gets here in the fall. And we certainly don't want to go there in the summer!!

I post alot too, but its a fun thing for me. I am inconsistent, sometimes I will post a ton, other times I am lurking for days on end. Right now I am post processing my wedding shots and popping in and out of here when I need a break from that.

We will be in Vegas this weekend for the Baker To Vegas relay run, should be fun, I get to take team photos for our department, my wife gets to run the relay, what a deal :)

Mooo! Good evening! I'll be in and out this evening.

Puddle, you gotta watch out for that electric fence. Wasn't there some sort of game in the old Ren & Stimpy cartoons about an electric fence?

Mo, congrats on the 9K!

And I've got a little decision to make. Some people we know, who we haven't seen for about a year and a half, are having a birthday party for their son on the 28th. My wife said sure. Remember that we haven't seen them in a long time.... Tonight my brother calls and asks what I'm doing on the 28th. Seems that the local rail museum is having a live steam day... http://www.oerm.org/pages/calendar.html and they're supposed to be running their 2-6-2 http://www.oerm.org/pages/vc2.html.

So, do I go to a birthday party and pig out, and maybe take some pictures. Or go hang out with my brother, who I haven't seen since Christmas, and watch some trains... Hmmm...

There was talk at one time about computers being able to support half-pixels... maybe then an 800% crop may prove something - but now it just shows some guy trying to increase his post count

Ahh...I always thought I was a serious pixel peeper but thank you for showing me that I am not there yet.. :D

I thought Petkal was going way overboard with his 200% crop, now we are looking at 800%, wow.... besides most of it is software interpolation anyway!! (ie. software 'filling in' data that is not even there to begin with!!)

But as Mo said, live and let live. It's all up to the gear owners.. :)

for one the old saying, no such question, that guy has finialy made one. a dumb question, you haven't of course :)

perhaps the guy thought that pixel peeping really meant looking at the pixels and seeing problems that will never been seen in the real world.

personally I would go with the person is an idiot. he is asking for trouble with a post like that.

BTW, even more importantly, congrats on the 9K Mo, now where's the cake ? :)

My new flash has arrived! I bought a used 420EX. It was either that, or a pair of Vivitar 285HV's to give me two flashes. But since I already have a ST-E2, I thought I'd pay up and use the Canon wireless system. I still came in at less than the cost of two Vivitars anyway.

However, even next to the 430EX that I currently have, it seems like a very entry level flash. Even the sound of the capacitor charging isn't as pleasant as the 430EX - I didn't realize how good we've had it all along since Canon released the 430. However it was cheap and as long as it works (which it does) I am happy... it makes an excellent E-TTL2 slave for a dual flash setup. :)

Thanks :)

I did not feel like coughing up the cash for the 580EX.. really there have only been a couple of situations, like, 0.01% of the time (literally) where my 430EX has run out of power. Not a lot of other 580 features tempt me, and that the price has gone up on the new Mk2 is totally not appealing either.

In fact with my technique of blended flash+ambient, I need very high ISO's and wide apertures to achieve this - and both of those substantially add to the power of the 430EX anyway. I can see why some people need higher power flashes, but I don't, not at this time anyway.. I have decided to cut down on the spending too.

I like what this guy said on the Tamron thread:

"Blow it up further, get each pixel printed at 5"x5" at the lab... then lay them all out in a field, and flyover in a plane. Should look perfect from that height." -- that would be quite costly!

You clearly have a defective copy there...try lining up some hubcaps on the centerline of the nearest interstate. Then turn off the IS and hand hold that baby at 400mm with a 2x TC 20 seconds at ISO 50....surely that should give you a nice sharp image if that lens is any good.

Oh no, I've been cheated again!! The small cameras have zooms? I never knew that.. the salesman kept telling me that my 28/1.8 has a 1.8X wide angle zoom.. but I can't seem to make it zoom.....I press the + and - buttons on the back of the camera and it doesn't do anything!

Hey uhh, folks, can you check this pic out for me? I shot this BIF with my 100-400 and my 5D, and they both must be soft, because the pic is really terrible, I cropped it at 600% because the bird was small, HELP!!!!!!!111!!11!!

Wow PG.....totally not your day eh?

No coffee and now no cell and even puddle is teasing you...

It's quite horrifying to imagine what must have happened to the A85 (the cell gives me an idea of what could possibly have...)

Nope, definitely NOT my day!

Uh, oh...you better watch out...

I can just hear her now... "Don't mock the Pigeon Queen..."

And I guess that's one way to get a web-enabled phone...

Oh so was that what happened? Holy Pigeons Batman...gonna have to re-vamp my religion apparently...

Still trying to figure out the laws of physics which allow the center of the photo to be sharp and the sides to be blurred in a circle.. normally motion blur affects the whole frame...

  Tell you what...take your camera, climb a hill...stand sideways to the hill and try to photograph something...then tumble sideways down the hill...see what happens :D

That's a tough one - and just as we were talking about cellphones too. I think this was a ploy to get Puddle to buy you a web enabled phone.

That is a seriously cool shot! Works out a bit expensive to practice this technique though :?

[Note to self - never lend Permi any uninsured gear ;)]

Not only did he not buy me a web cell...well actually that's not true, he did but we didn't not get the web service...he used the moment to buy one for himself too

and cummon! I wanna borrow everyone's gear!! (especially when I'm tired of dropping my own!)

The cameras center of rotation is perpendicular to the sensor and centered in the lens. It's a great shot, 1 in a 1000

Thanks Gil Just Plain John! :D

Thanks

Thanks Lisa, I am going to get this one I think

My favorite rant about phones.. the phone is now trying to do everything, and accomplishes nothing as a result. And they are hard to learn. I was trying to setup email on my phone - they use a COMPLETELY different terminology for everything, so I had to decipher their language. WTH can't they just use standard computer terms.. they ARE coming over to our world, not we to theirs...

I had a chat with two colleagues recently. One of them had a phone that tries to be a PDA, including the ability to crash at least twice a day. The phone will just quietly lock up and become unresponsive, won't take incoming calls, and won't even let you know that it has fallen over dead. Pop the battery and 'hard restart' it.

The other colleague's phone has stopped ringing... at all. Get this, a phone that doesn't ring. Actually, I could learn to like such a phone.... ;)

That's what I use the phone for, to make outgoing calls, and primarily as an SMS/text message system. People usually find it very hard to reach me on the cell - the secret is to leave me a SMS and I will get back to them. But few know that...

I simply use the "Meeting" ringtone profile on my Nokia, which makes the phone beep once for each text message or incoming call, and then stay silent. "Silent" mode turns the vibration on, and when the phone is on the table it sounds like a jackhammer, so I use meeting instead.

One reason I dislike Verizon... They disable a lot of the features in your phone - like the ability to upload music ringtones for free via bluetooth. NO - they want you to pay them for their vCast service and buy tones from them...

I like Cingular because they don't make the phones dumb... PLUS - since they use GSM, I can buy some $10 phone off of ebay, swap my SIM card, and I don't have to call Verizon to "re-activate" --- all my info is attched to my SIM card, not my phone (like Verizon)...

Closest 'correct' technical explanation of the guy's comments - cameras don't AF at f/22, so they do the AF wide open, stop down to f/22 and shoot....that's about the only thing I can make of it.....

All of ours do that - AF and lenses are always wide open by default..and stop down only at instant of the exposure.

For Linux lovers everywhere....

"Petaflops" sounds like a name you'd give a puppy. In fact, petaflops are a thousand trillion floating-point operations per second. Sorry, I don't even know how to express that numerically.

But for me, what's more interesting than a string of zeros that stretch from here to the back forty is how you generate a petaflop. For the answer to this condundrum, look no further than the folks at the Oak Ridge National Lab which recently doubled the performance of its "Jaguar"computer to119 teraflops of peak performance (119 trillion mathematical calculations per second), making it, ORNL claims, the most powerful open scientific computing system in the world.

At the core (no pun intended) of the system are (get this) 11,708 dual-core AMD Opteron processors, 46 terabytes of memory, and 750 terabytes of disk storage. Moreover, by late 2007 as dual-core processors will be replaced with AMD quad-core processors. The memory will be doubled and the operating system will migrate to a version of Linux on the computer nodes.

In what I would categorize as an understatement, project director Buddy Bland said "We are excited about the performance." He went on to say that "AORSA, a major fusion code, achieved sustained performance of 38 teraflops on the first ever run on the system, which is the fastest ever for this application. We expect the code to achieve in excess of 60 teraflops sustained performance."

Beans are never free;)

ahh yes that's true.

I can see it now, you got your beans and go to the check out. the operator scans it and then the whole system locks up, or blue screens.

Thanks MS, you have now given us barcodes that don't work :)

of course Apple will say that they got a multi-coloured barcode that works fine. Only you go and check out to be told that the operator only knows how to use MS barcodes.

Hmm. Would the MS system even be allowed to sell us apples? It might prevent that as helping the competition. Apple sauce would probably be ok as they would not mind mashed up apples - unless they wanted to stop us even thinking of the product. Oh this is too complicated. ??? ??? ???

And, of course if it did allow apples to be sold, they would only be in a pack with a pie dish, packs of pastry and flour - and may even include an oven. After all, MS is famous for bundling stuff in with it's products ;)

I'll go and take another tablet now - don't worry

who else could commandeer a whole forum's attention...if it's not Pete, it's as like him as a twin brother

Then again, sis. . . there have been a few in recent months who could have been his twin.;)
