Orange is very easy to run out of gamut. I have more trouble printing orange than any other color out there.
not me, it's red that I have problems with. I hate it when my reds are pinkish or purple is or burgundy. I don't think it's a printer thing though...I'm beginning to think it's a camera/lens thing. Until the 5D, reds never turned out right and even with a couple of lenses (the DO being one of them) on it, sometimes reds will still be wrong. Since I like red, I like it to be RED! :)
Cool, glad it worked out overall. I really prefer lustre as well.
In honor of his birthday, I'll provide a bona fide Puddle response here:
The difficulty with printing oranges is the dimpling. The skin just isn't smoothe enough to get good contact with the ink.
Next time try an apple.
THIS WAS GREAT! A perfect Puddle response

I remember reading a while ago that the canon cameras tend to mess up the red (I can't remember the exact details) And the best way to fix it is to calibrate your raw converter etc. I never really looked into it. I have never had a problem with the reds on my 30d. Usually they come out just right :D

Howdy ALL,
Can someone explain to me about a Canon lens please: it is a 400 F4 DO IS, USM and it has a GREEN ring instead of the infamous red ring?
Thanks,
Tom
Woolburr
25th of April 2007 (Wed), 12:15
Sure...the 400 DO uses Diffractive Optics. The intent behind DO is to improve optical clarity at longer focal lengths by canceling out Chromatic Aberration. CA causes you to see different wavelengths of light arriving somewhat out of alignment at the focal point...causing you to see purple fringes around objects in the image. The DO element corrects that. Also the addition of a DO element allows the manufacturer to build a long telephoto lens in a much more compact package. Canon currently makes 2 DO lenses...the 400 you asked about and the much sought after 70-300 DO...considered by many to be one of the finest compact telephoto lenses going. The green ring just signifies the lens has Diffractive elements, everything else is on par with having a red ring. DO glass is prime optical quality too.

Thanks. My Dad just came back from Japan and brought me a Canon brochure. I noticed the DO lens, but since all the information is in Japanese, I couldn't read it. I could see the cost at 770,000 yen, whatever that converts to?
Woolburr
25th of April 2007 (Wed), 12:26
That converts to about $6500 bucks at the current rate...the lens is available from B&H for $5300...http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=8454&A=details&Q=&sku=239654&is=USA&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation...and of course the Canon info is available in English too. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=154&modelid=7468

It only reaches 1/2 life-size at max; the Life Size Adapter costs almost as much again. It's also a full stop slower than the 85. I'd get the tubes; if you later decide you want a dedicated macro for the 5D, get the 100 f/2.8. Much better working distance.

It depends on what you want to do with it. I used it on the 5d and LOVED it for flowers! I don't find 1:1 all that use full flower personally... But if you want 1:1 the 50 isn't the lens you want.

One thing I like to do, is bum Scott's tubes and use them with the 50 makes focusing a lot easier than with a normal lens. I dunno I got lucky and found mine used for 175 shipped so I am happy :)

Thanks for the input. I looked at the converter and its around $300 and only good on THAT lens. I have tubes that I use on the 85, and I get decent results for being a macro-beginner, but I do wonder if I could do better with a dedicated macro. That is down the road, tho, since I need to better my technique before bettering my gear. ;)
ACTUALLY! The life-size converter works on more than just the 50mm... Canon says it only works on the 50mm, but I have read about people using them on a 100-400 and a few others... Let me try to find a link....

From this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41922
CANON EF LIFE SIZE CONVERTER
I recently acquired the EF Life Size Converter. (Thanks to Martin AKA "Huckaback Photo", who informs us of it's flexibility)
The EF Life Size Converter is an interesting little addition to any decent lens arsenal...
Contrary to Canon's claim that it is a specific part for use only with the 50mm Macro,... it will fit ANY EF compatible lens.
It's functionality is interesting.. it is essentially a combination of a T-con and an extension tube in one unit. I will need to do some measurebaiting (something I really never do) to determine what sort of additional magnification it offers.. but I suspect it is very close to a 1.4X T-con. But unlike the T-con it also adds the spacing of somewhere between a 12mm and 25mm extension tube reducing focus distance while increasing focal length with one part.
It's front element is also slightly recessed,. so unlike Canon's dedicated Teleconverters.. the EF Life Size Converter does not protrude forward and will fit any lens.
As with extension tubes, the EF Life Size Converter will reduce focus distance, allowing more magnification, at the expense of loosing infinity focus. How much closer you can get, like and extension tube, varies with your existing lenses normal minimum focus distance.
Link to Samples
Unlike the Canon EF T-Con's, this units presence is NOT indicated in EXIF data, neither focal length or aperture info is effected by it's use. this of course means your EXIF is out the window as both Focal length and aperture are obviously being altered.
The EF Life Size Converter is About the same size as the 1.4X T-con.. it is slightly lighter in weight (has less glass than the T-con)... but it is slightly longer.. (due to the "extension tube" hollow part)
I think it would make a great addition to any Macro enthusiasts bag of tricks.
Sample from the 100-400 + Lifesize: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=726097#post726097

It was overcast today - so I couldn't get "great" shutter speeds - I think the lowest was 1/200 - 1/250... With my monopod it wasn't that bad...

FWIW, I think I have a co-dependent relationship with my hairdresser. I tell her what I want and don't want...she refuses to do it (I'm not kidding), then I get mad and don't go for a few months...start to look like garbage and give in and go back. I'm over a barrel here because NO ONE cuts my hair like she does. (I JUST hate it that she says "I have to be satisfied with my work before anyone else" and does what she wants!) Today my hair left the shop looking like Nancy Grace's hair...

not sure who Nancy Grace is but I understand (more than you know) the problem finding a hairdresser who can do your hair the way you want.. I've gone everywhere from downtown salons to my cousin's sister-in-law... and just when I think I have one good cut I go back for a second and it's terrible again.. I think it's the curls.. the curls throw them.. :(

This gal has been doing my hair for years at least 4 years I think. My hair is baby fine...and straight and I think that they have as much problem doing hair with no wave whatsoever as they do with curly (my two best friends have curly hair and once they found a hairdresser who could do it, they've stayed...10+ years I think...so I KNOW what you mean :) ). Anyway, when I color it myself she tells me how bad it looks (and she's right but at least I GET TO DECIDE what I want, even if it's bad). Literally we have "tough discussions" (me: I'm NOT paying you $120 to decide how to do my hair, I WANT you to do it the way I want" her: "okay, but you won't like it" me: "fine, just don't bleach it anymore"...later....me: "are you putting bleach on my hair?" her: "yes..what you want won't work"....)

LMAO.. that is crazy.. i've never had a hairdresser talk to me like that.. I've had them explain why they think I should cut or not cut to certain styles or lengths but not refuse to do what i'm paying them for... I do think you need a new girl.. Here's how I go about it. You see someone who looks like they have hair kinda like yours and that it's a really nice cut/color.. you ask them for their hairdressers name.. Women NEVER have a problem telling you and you can maybe find somebody else..

Wow, absolutely awesome.. the bokeh plus the way the rest of the flower falls out of focus, while the top white stuff is so sharp that it becomes almost an abstraction - that's amazing..
A good macro lens would be a 60mm EF-S ... it has USM and is 1:1 macro - and it is only $100 more than the 50mm macro... Though, you can only use it with your XT...
Or a 1D if you are brave. (actually, no bravery needed. Just a willingness to void a warranty.. or if there is no warranty, there are no problems). No vignetting - that's the amazing part. (the 60 is very much over-engineered - that is a GOOD thing!!)

HEY MO! Another easy way to macro: fall down holding your camera...usually the shutter will go off when you are really close to the ground (clutching wildly to save your camera)...catching the horror in the bugs eyes as you are about to crush the life out of it is really a 1 in a million shot!

You can macro from a tripod...you can macro handheld...you can macro with a bracket and flash...all today's shots were handheld...no flash...existing light...sometimes it is fun to play with a reflector...I just use one of those folding windshield versions...
As far as how close...depends on the lens and the tubes...the 24-70 and tubes is very up close and personal...the 300 f/4 L IS and tubes is much more laid back...best bet is to put on a tube...snap some shots...just keep adding and removing tubes until you get the desired effect. The beauty of digital...you can experiment!

I WAS JUST KIDDING   my idea of doing a macro is...."Oh pretty.." twist, AF, snap. Viola...I know I'm the last person to give macro advice but I just wanted to be part of the conversation you know

Greetings from Beautiful Downtown Madras Oregon!
Thanks!
I love this lens -- Very light! Very solid! Fast and silent AF! Small... Far zoom! Great color - I am in love with it <3 <3
I hope to get to Ankeny or Ridgefield this Saturday... The Willamette POTN crowd can join me if they wish
I'm free Saturday morning and all day Sunday (I have a 4:00 wedding to go to on Saturday). I'd be up for either.
that's cheap for around here (cut/color weave and eyebrow wax)
I'll do it for half that amount.
Awesome TR as usual!
Does T.D. get groupies now?
I thought I already had them.
We need to send him to Vegas so he can parachute with the other Elvi!
Hey, I'm going there week after next!
Okay Riley and Wool.....so what do I need to know about shooting Macro once I put some ext. tubes on my camera? How close do you get to your subjects?
Fill the frame! Don't worry about the rest.
Good idea!
LOL  He could take his catapult show on the road...hang out with Barry Manilow and Sigfried and Roy...I can see it now "Jailhouse T-BONE!"
T-Bone was my nickname for Turner. It's ironic that Dan incorporated that into TR. I'm sure I never mentioned it here.
Still digesting the twin Elvi concept.
LOL.
