Here my friends is a little excerpt that I shared with one of our guests who was suffering some growing pains in the photographic department.
"Get back to that happy place soon before you find yourself so frustrated that you want to sell your gear. Pixel peeping is a sickness that has nothing to do with photography. There are lots of great pictures that have "less than perfect" pixels.
If nothing else, find yourself some time to shoot some pictures for the sake of taking pictures instead of pictures for the sake of seeing how they look under the magnifying glass.
There is a ton of great information on this forum, but there is also lots of stuff you need to take with a grain of salt. Some of these self-proclaimed experts have nothing more to show in their portfolio than stacks of photographs of batteries in a staggered line. That is pretty sad. Enjoy your camera! Take real pictures and to hell with the sorry a$$ advice you are getting about swooning over technical nonsense."
That was good Wool. (she gets serious for a moment)
When I started going back to shooting a whole photo again (instead of killing myself for sharp flight), like you recommended, I started having a lot more fun...today I put on the 17-40 (oddly enough, this lens has given me more keepers than any other, shot for shot, but I rarely use it because I always have to "think much harder" about how I want to compose) and had a blast with it when normally I would have used my macro lens...anyway, I agree with you.
Oh, I do like macro photography but not of batteries  mostly butterflies and flowers (yeah, I'm a guhrl) anyway...

Actually this is pretty much the reason why the 60 macro exists. This is a rare, collector's edition flashlight and I am taking pics of it to present.. :)
On a more serious note Wool.. your wisdom as always shines through.. I also believe one should be allowed to practice their photography even if it doesn't meet others definitions of "art".. too many people dismiss others' photography as it does not conform to THEIR standards.
And when I land a great shot I'm happy.. no matter what I landed it with. It wouldn't have mattered if my recent batch of landscapes had been shot on a 10-22 with 350D or 17-40 and 5D.

Hey Yoda...why do they call that little devil a "wine light"....the funny purple color?
Yeah, according to the legend, the owner of the company loves a good drink of wine, and since he after all, does own a flashlight company, he commissioned a special edition, in burgundy wine color (as opposed to the natural anodized 'army green' color of the lights) for wine tasting sessions.. apparently they use them to peer through the bottle....
The legend has never been verified, but it's largely accepted that the Winelight got its name from the wine color. Normal color and official name can be found here (http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/co_disp/displ/prrfnbr/803/sesent/00).
Subject aside, whatcha think of the product photography? C&C welcome.
It's hard to believe, but that was shot on a 350D with the 60mm macro and it is a JPEG straight out of the camera as is standard practice for me.

What ever happened to Liza? (as in "where'd she go? finally abandon us as hopeless?")
Did her son get his cast off?
Back. Yes, Wyatt is now cast free. He continues to wear a splint to help support the wrist, though.
I do believe she was getting a bit of holiday shopping in post cast removal...and then...since it was raining men in her locale...she opted for a hot date to a basketball game, I believe...sordid details to follow!
I got some of my shopping done today. Skateboard for the older boy and an electric knife for my mother. I know the latter is a weird gift, but that's what she wanted. I'm also buying her a couple of gift cards to go with it.
And, unfortunately, there was no hot date Friday night. I didn't see him at the game, so I'm assuming overtime was the culprit. If not, I'll move on to the next one. ;)

There are apparently several multi-national fire teams either on the ground or enroute to assist in the suppression efforts. When you start talking fires that large, you can use all the help you can get.

As far as the shooting goes...I have to agree with you completely...if the customer is happy...then I am happy....sure...there is always room for improvement. I just felt sorry for this individual...got blasted with tons of pixel peeping advice and that wasn't the question he was asking at all. I honestly thought the guy was on the verge of throwing his camera away...and quitting photography...because that was the only answer he was getting.

Why won't people ever just learn to stay with the reputable joints like B&H..I won't even deal with Adorama after a flap they had over my credit card, multiple suspicious emails and persons claiming to be from them emailing me saying my card was refused (when the bank confirmed it had been charged).... fortunately everything worked out but it was so close to not having been.

I read that story on CNN too and I'm thinking that a GPS could have saved them from making the wrong turn in the first place.
Sari....if it makes you feel any better about your car-stuck-in-the-mud story.. I drove my little 5dr hatch off the road yesterday, onto a dirt track in a totally creepy forest.. supposed to be some national park but the place was so run down and dilapidated it almost felt like nobody has been here in 20 years.. and nobody SHOULD be here.
While climbing a slight slope, both front tires slipped and for one terrifying moment I recalled your story - AND the CNN story. Fortunately it was far from freezing, fortunately I still had my wits with me, and fortunately I had my Garmin Quest on the dash and I knew that in an absolute worst case it would be a 10km (6mi) walk to help - I wouldn't be lost in the forest because I know the device would guide me out.
I solved the problem by throwing it into reverse and letting the car slide back down before turning around and finding another way out, so.. no rescue needed. But still.
I highly recommend anybody leaving the beaten track to carry one of these and learn how to use it. There are so many times when I have been driving in unknown territory, late at night, and it's saved me from making the wrong turns and ending up god knows where. I am one of those who are perpetually lost as well, and once confused I am as good as screwed (I do admit this is one of my shortcomings, sadly..)
The "old faithful" Garmin 12 or 12XL series (my first one :) ) now goes on Ebay for $89.. just a tiny bit more than a nifty fifty. Ensure you have spare AA's on hand (raid your Speedlite if you must!).. it will get you home. And if you can call emergency services, and you can give them a coordinate reading, that will GREATLY reduce their time needed to find you - probably not more than a 300x300ft square they need to search with that info!

Your birthday is in December? Happy Birthday! :)
Yeah, it's quite shocking how these people don't think before they act.. if it's too good to be true.. it is.
I was *ALMOST* taken by one of them - but I noticed some inconsistencies in the site. They had a 20D, which at that time I would dearly have loved to have. $699 - holy cow! OK, so I wander down onto the site to have a look. Looks good except for a couple of things. "Item ships from South Korea" - for a US company? It's not economically feasible to locate a warehouse that far away. (mine will be an intl' order, but that's a separate issue)
Then they won't state what payment methods they use. So I go through the order form, keying in a dummy address, only to have them tell me your international order cannot be charged to a credit card and you MUST make payment by Western Union. Up goes the red flag because I will NEVER wire money this way (apart from the fact I don't like WU to begin with). No harm, no foul - they have no CC numbers, they have an address that even a moron would know is a placeholder. This is the way ebay scammers work: use WU, the funds are gone, you will never see or hear from them again, period. It is the same as giving cash to the stranger in the trench coat that tells you "I'll be right back".
I run a check on their site. Seems like they ripped off the site design wholesale from some other company. Interestingly, other company's address is right in my home town - I bet if I showed up there tomorrow and asked whether they had any idea, they wouldn't.
Even with all my precautions it was too close for comfort.. I would end up buying my 20D months later from B&H, used, condition 9.

One other useful trick: Debit card. This is a real Visa that works just like a real CC, but is backed by real $$ in the bank. Firstly, it stops you from living beyond your means. Secondly, even if unauthorized parties got access to the CC info, it stops them from helping themselves. They try to charge the card and Visa tells them DECLINED because there is simply no $$ in the bank, the same way they would reject a card if you hit the credit limit. No dispute - call the bank and cancel the card.
Well of course it means you also have to top up the card before you go on a spending spree.. :D

The mercury soared to 42.1 degrees Celsius in Melbourne at 2.45pm (AEDT) today as bushfires raged across much of the state.
That made it Melbourne's hottest December day since December 20, 1953, when the temperature also hit 42.1.

morning.
I have decided I am a complete failure as a photographer.
tromped outside to get the last of the supplies in from the truck, le the door slam, headed down the stairs to see a redtail hawk sitting on my back walk having his morning breakfast. I immediately plopped down on the stair s and watched him for about 5 minutes before quietly coming back into the house to get the camera. quietly went out the door and perched my tush quietly on the step, lifted my camera to shoot and he flew off. no shot. He just went into a tree in the yard but I couldn't get a clear shot so just peered through the branches to watch while he figured what to do. after a couple minutes he took flight right toward me- passed within 3 feet and over the house and I just sat there and watched.
He was beautiful and I feel honored to have had my brother in my yard, but not one photo to show for that close encounter. :(

Sometimes a visit by such an esteemed guest is not necessarily the ideal photographic opportunity. I think I might have dealt with such a close encounter in similar fashion...enjoying the moment and thinking of the camera as an afterthought.
BTW....My keyboard is ill....not typing all characters, space bar works about once every three tries and making funny beeps. Thanks for sharing!

no, not reall facetious. Maybe I should say those are some good things about the place. I enjoy a lounge, some ice cream, and even watching a bit of strutting depending on the strutters. Heck, I even break gender norms on accasion and used to strut my stuff on occasion too. :)
Permie- your lounge schedule sounds like mine. I was very productive earlier - now my day has devovled into serial naps interspersed with the laundry trek downstairs. IF they weren't so dangerously steep I might practice my strutting as I go.
puddlepirate44
10th of December 2006 (Sun), 13:42
Strutting is an art. One must not practice strutting all the time, as it becomes expected by the others. I save up strutting for the truly important moments. Safety, also, must be considered. Strutting with a 30D and a 35mm f/2 is not so dangerous, but strutting with a 5d with a 100-400 could cause you to slip a disk.
OSHA has a memo out on strutting with cameras. I've read it. I'm a more cautious man for it.

Hey!!! Don't even think for one second that you have a monopoly on this:D ;)
ya lost me.
1. Can't have a monopoly of having a wife that bears human children.
2. Can't have a monopoly of having a son that thinks outside the lines like his dad.
3. Can't have a monopoly of having a son that frustrates.
4. All of the above.
He really doesn't frustrate us that much. Especially when he lives 500 miles away.... Unless he calls... again...

Oh, I have those too. Don't even get me started. The perils of having a bigger home is feeling the need to stuff it full at the holidays. I am giving a ton of stuff to me kids when Christmas is over. I am tired of spending a week decorating and taking it down every year. Scrooge attitude, huh?
Even the outside (Last year's photo) gets a full workover.

Oh man, and I thought I was doing good with my holiday spirit when I go and turn on the porch light.

ET= electronics technician not extra terrestrial. there's a slight difference. Not much, but there is a difference.

I don't know...sometimes he says he's going to stay. (I think because it's a secure income, health insurance...that sort of thing.) But he's always wanted to be a history teacher. He went in the military in order to be able to use the G.I. bill for college. But he's 20 and I'm sure his mind will change again...

He can retire in 20 and then get his teaching certification. A lot of former military personnel do this.

I told him that. The problem for his is that, at the age of 20, the age of 38 seems like another lifetime away. "I'd have to stay in for, like, forever! I mean, when I get out, I'd be old! Like you!" (he didn't really say that. I just heard his brain thinking it.... :) ).

HOwdy Yoda- did you survive the silence and the heat?
moooooooorning Wu... ya calling me a parrot? ;)
Yes I did survive both, and today it is a very much more civilized temperature. 18C outside......PERFECT!
perhaps.
morning.
I have decided I am a complete failure as a photographer.
Oi.. don't let the PG-birds-in-flight syndrome get to you! I know the two of you are twins and you think alike but this is not the time ;)
I seriously am starting to want your husband Permagrin. He's funny, shoots & stands in the kitchen making you brunch. Oh, and helps with xmas decorations.
Does he give massages as well? Can I lend him?
Careful, she throws things.. ;)
Do I smell an arranged marriage between Claire and young-puddle-PG?

He'd be crazy not to stay in with the economy the way it is now. And 38 isn't old. Wait until he's my age.

Hey, Maureen!
Did you see that spammer in the Classifieds forum? The member name is "archive02." I've hit the triangle on two threads, but there are more.

Only if I was counting myself. I was up and posting to a quiet board.
I won't. I know I am not a bird in flight person. I was just surprised that I didn't come right back in and get my camera. It was an honor to have him in the yard though and I'm glad I watched and talked to him.
PG and I have both offered sons to Claire. Now she must make her choice. ;)

Sometimes it is better to experience the moment.. there are times when I realize I can see just fine, but will not be able to land the shot with the gear on me, so I just enjoy it. I watched a stunning sunset a few weeks ago.. would have loved to pull out the 100-400 and capture the 'great ball of fire' effect - problem is the 1-4 is at home sleeping... so I just stood there and watched till the sun dropped below the horizon. No pics to show for that though ;)
If you rushed back in to grab the camera you might have missed the hawk.. so it's all good..

Sooo... is that a challenge? Have you thrown the gauntlet? :)
I wonder if my son is sitting down in his room, studying some piece of electronics, and suddenly feeling this complete sense of pressure out of nowhere....

SOmetimes I have the camera with me and just stand and watch something. but sometimes that just waht needs to be done- experience it through more than that tiny viewfinder.
although, I wish I had had my glasses on this morning. :)
