Well, I just downloaded a trial version of lightroom. I used it for 20min and then bought it. Having spent 13hrs working on photos yesterday in Aperture, I am amazed at how much faster lightroom moves. I was really skeptical, having tried their beta version and not liked it at all...but they must have worked out the bugs...

Dang you Riley!

sRGB - that is the most standard. Adrobe RGB 1998 is more for those who print on Ink Jet printers, etc.

I like it alot, it actually has a few more functions than aperture and works a heck of a lot faster. I have PE4 that I use for special effects though...I never have used CS2 or 3 so I don't know if they are worth it...PE4 works great for what I want.

I haven't ordered it from the net yet, still thinking they have good software locally, but really, no one has anything in the stores. Most good software over $100, especially for what I do, can only be ordered on line. I have been using PE5 and like it, but I want to try Lightroom if it does batch editing better than CS2. Also, I have PS7, but don't like it as much as my PE5. I have weddings and events coming up and I don't really want to spend too much time PP. I've read almost every thread here about the Lightroom and CS2 and I'm still not sure yet. I want to spend my extra cash on a 1.4 extender (I was supposed to get two months ago). Actually, spending money on the 70-200 2.8 IS just about killed me since I just got my 5D before Christmas. My bank account is tired of exploding. ;)

I have CS2, but I use DPP for 99% of my work, I really enjoy it, I find the images to be sharper when converted in DPP as opposed to CS2. The only time I use CS2 is when I make some very specialty changes or enhancements.

I tried batch processing a few times but did not like, though its very time consuming (thank goodness for down time at work), I like to work through every single photo individually

Does anyone else use or like DPP, I am really happy with it, I think its easier to use than CS2 for raw conversions

I've tried DPP -- at this Canon Macro workshop we Oregon RRTP members went to - the Canon folk were saying how Adobe CS2 RAW messes up the colors compared to DPP.... I just don't like the interface on DPP .... but then again, I am used to CS2.

One thing about DPP that I like is the Picture Styles, I like the landscape style which is essentially added contrast and saturation, but its easy to go back and forth in DPP. Now why would someone like me want this Lightroom thing :) I hear lots of good things (Lisa ;) )

I guess I should say that I batch process in groups...a certain pose/light etc (and the myriad of similar shots) get the same processing but the next set will be a different batch...so I don't process everything from one shoot the same..

Thats me as well, I rarely, and I mean rarely get into the creative side of photoshop, I still do not understand half the advanced stuff. I try and get it right in camera with Raw (which I still think is the greatest thing ever) then convert. Sounds like this Lightroom may work for me. I only really open PS for resizing, framing and sharpening. Once they make the changes to the sharpening in Lightroom (supposedly in 1.1) I won't really have a use for it.

I have always re-converted the Raw file again when making any significant changes

I am getting better at PP and my workflow has changed but sometimes I will make fine adjustments to tiffs etc... But most the time I am working in raw so it is no big deal.

I am the first to say that my PP skills are ok at best. Lisa did my watermark for me, I still can't get that right  (thanks again Lisa ;) ) But I guess I am learning, I have made it this far, forces me to get things right in camera, because its hard for me to rescue much of anything

The presets are awesome, they are basically exposure, curves BW settings etc that you can automatically apply to an image. For example I have BW preset that I have made for different styles of pictures, I just select all the ones I want like that and use th epreset and they all get that. I can go back through and make changes and fine tune thing as I go. I really like the options available in Lightroom over ACR for making changes to RAW files (It is the same in CS3 however, but I don't have it :)).

I can't wait to see what they come out with for changes to the sharpening tool in LR, then I will finally have a quick to web with watermark workflow and life will be good :D

Personally, I like to resize for output size. Currently it is all done for the full size image and then it is just resized when you export.

I have been trying to find more details on exactly what they are doing, from what I have been able to find over on the feature request forum on Adobe's website, is that they are going to make it more featured and be more like USM in PS. Don't qoute me, as is expected they are kinda tight lipped, so I don't know for sure, that is just what I am gathering.

I guess I should say that it really isn't a deal breaker for me. I use lots of the other stuff in there so sharpening outside of LR isn't that big of a deal. It just takes more time. But oh well, I still think I am ahead of the game compared to bridge and ACR.

I upload full size jpegs...I don't resize (because smugmug doesn't accept raw so a full size jpeg isn't usually too big for them), I just use the smugmug options for posting on the web. I just finished the video...and downloaded the full program.

Another thing that's really nice about this program is that I can have it running in two locations (desktop and laptop) at the same time. Aperture doesn't let us do that so we have to take turns downloading and using it even though we're on different computers.

Well, I've only owned it for two hours so it's hard to say. It does have more features than aperture and is easier to use. It's faster so far anway...but I haven't put it through a 500 photo shoot yet...just a couple of irises... so overall, this has been a VERY positive $200 spent. I'll probably play with it for a while yet and see if it can do everything that aperture can do. I'm still not figuring out the watermark thing...did you explain that and I missed it?

Suzy do watch the tutorial (it's a fast explanation of what it can do) but definitely play with it...my gosh I'm amazed at it.

I rented a 16-35 a couple times. I'd just about made up my mind to buy one when Canon announced the 17-40. I bought that instead. It was my first L...

The 17-40 also has the dubious distinction of being the only lens I've ever had to send back for repair, when it died 32 days after I bought it. One day earlier and Samy's would have let me just exchange it for another.

It's beautiful - but I wouldn't call it a mini-Switzerland. The gondola ride up Mt. Howard is a trip. You scrape the trees. Kind of freaky!

that's 8 hrs away from us! (but beautiful ;) ). I could drive to the Canadian border in less time than it takes to get there though :)

the wolf sanctuary is about an hour and half away...I'm hoping for a favorable email response to a photography tour. If I get one, are any of you interested in it?

It really is beautiful there (Joseph/Wallowa). I'm not a big eastern Oregon fan, but Joseph is really beautiful.

I'd definitely be up for a trip to the Wolf place.

I know wallowa isn't that far.. its just its in Joseph... :).

We do have a little cyber club. I think we should make a coast meet this summer. Bailey has requested that I take her to the beach and to newport to the the aneomies and see the jelly fish. Maybe we can make an oregon RRTP meet out of it?

You know I'm up for it...and having lived there for years I know a lot of out of the way places....

Hehe - yea - what do you need to know?I'm trying to move some of my office into the adjacent room. I want to do something a little more elegant than just poke a hole through the wall and run an ethernet cable through it.

I'd like to install RJ-45 jacks on opposite sides of the wall, and I have them already. The connections on the backs of the jacks (hey, that rhymes!) are the IDC punch-type dealies.

It seems to me that I'm going to have to reverse a couple of the wire pairs (if not all of them) on the short connection between the two jacks. One side will be plugged into the router, and the other side will be connected to the computer on the other side of the wall.

Does that make sense?

On your jacks - keep them both the same (I use the 568B color standard) - then use different cables from the jack to the end-device.

My biggest oops, was asking the wedding folk if the 24-105L was acceptable, got slammed pretty hard on that one

Beautiful flower Lisa, seems your having lots of fun with Lightroom

thanks :)...yes it's really user friendly (having used aperture many of the options are very similar) and it's SO MUCH faster (did I say FASTER because I MEANT FASTER than aperture. Even with the ram maxed out on my laptop, aperture still ran slow...

I would love to hear what you think of DPP, have you ever used it. Just wondering how it stakes up against Lightroom for Raw Conversions

I've only used dpp a few times so I wouln't be a fair judge. Have you thought about downloading the trial for lightroom and doing a comparison (with a few photos?)
