Sooo... is that a challenge? Have you thrown the gauntlet? :)
I wonder if my son is sitting down in his room, studying some piece of electronics, and suddenly feeling this complete sense of pressure out of nowhere....
no challenge, no gauntlet. It's all family. :)

The plotting which goes on behind ones' back :D
you're correct.
SOmetimes I have the camera with me and just stand and watch something. but sometimes that just waht needs to be done- experience it through more than that tiny viewfinder.
although, I wish I had had my glasses on this morning. :)
So true! Sari posted a thread about experiencing vs composing and I find I need to experience a place before I can start shooting. If I don't take that time, the first dozen shots WILL be crap. This is pretty much assured ;)
Yeah glasses would help :D I would definitely head back in for mine.. no, mine are on from the moment I wake up because I am as blind as you can imagine without them.
You referred to the hawk as your brother.. so I am not the only one who feels a certain connection with specific animals? (not the hawk though, mine's different)

I need to get one of myself one of these days... I can just imagine mounting my little A530 on an Arca-Swiss compatible QR plate, on a 26 pound rated ballhead, sitting on top of a tripod rated for 15 pounds, to take a pic of myself in timer mode carrying my 5D and 100-400 ;)

Ice cream is best in winter. That's about the only time I crave it. Popsicles in summer (bomb pops) and ice cream once it cools down.

Yes, definitely a NO stress job. I preferred to work grill though. I'm not really a people person and having to be cheerful when cleaning up 90 thousand french fries because a child threw his and all his siblings meals during a tantrum...well, lets just say I preferred to cook!

Yeah I thought you would like the animal :)
Wikipedia's wolf shots are not very sharp when you download the high res versions and pixel peep them but they are fantastic anyway. The one with the red background is so perfectly posed you would have thought it *IS* posed.
I just noticed how the Tamron's performance falls off VERY sharply towards the corners at 500/6.3 wide open. I evaluated this lens for my own long zoom, but center performance only, and center performance tallies with what I'm seeing, the tiger's face is sharp.
You have a dedicated macro....it has to be sharp or it becomes a complete laughing stock ;)

Video cards are 'old' when they have been around for a number of years.. realistically, if you don't play the latest graphics-intensive computer games, your card is fine.
I am using an older NVidia Quadro with 128MB of memory.. not exactly your blindingly fast gaming card, but for photo editing, it is plenty. And more importantly it has a full set of multimonitor controls and the ability to drive multiple LCDs, which I need for work.

you know it's a funny thing about the internet. people who are normally shy can find the internet alot easer to handle.
Myself personally I find it's harder to deal with people face to face than it does either over the phone or over the internet.
You know this guy may be shy, and more than likey on the cards that's the case. He could find that he finds it hard to deal with the opposite sex face to face, or is unsure on how to express what he needs to. It could even be the case that he might find it hard to believe that you may be interested in him. (which could cause alot of issues in itself) I take it you have seen the movie, The 40year old Virgin? there are some people out there like that. hard to believe but true.
The fact that he has sent you a e-mail birthday card means that he likes you enough to be in contact.
as I am sure you are aware you need to know how long you can pull on the piece of string before you can let go.
perhaps a phone call might be a good way to start it off?
either that or he is sharping his knives

Well, there's some nice desert canyon (if you like to shoot desert) shots in the crooked river area. It's been ages since I've been over there but last time I was in crooked river I was very sorry I didn't have my camera. I think it's about 15-20 min from Bend proper. Not sure though...

No, he isn't sharpening his knives, Mark. He's a local fellow. I've been exchanging PM's with him all day, so I'm hoping he'll overcome this infernal shyness. It's hard for me to understand, because I'm pretty gregarious by nature. It's frustrating, too, because I was pretty sure he had seen me and the game and figured he just didn't like what he saw. I'm kind of new to today's dating and mating rituals, too. It's been 20 years since I had to do anything like this. And I don't call men. Mother always told me only loose women do that, so I don't.
And, no, I haven't seen that movie. Haven't been to a movie for a year.

POTN is a little slow. I'm on a hardwired broadband connection, same as I've always been, and it's occasionally a bit slow but it's not a big issue. Do not adjust your wireless ;) (well actually do adjust it if it is giving trouble..)

Greetings Everyone,
Don't mean to butt in, but I was wondering if anyone else is having trouble with POTN tonight. I keep losing it. I'm on a new laptop on a wireless connection in a Hotel room, so I'm just trying to figure out if it's POTN or the network.
Thanks!
POTN keeps dumping me...so that would be my guess.

Yes, I NEVER appreciated my 17-40's abilities until I got the 5D. FF is amazing, though I see it continually touted as useless around here...but I LOVE it.
Couple of reasons why I love FF...
Can't get a 28mm equivalent prime for APS-C.
Can't get a 24mm equivalent zoom starting at 24mm for APS-C. Even Tokina's new 16-50 is a 26-80 equivalent.
17-40 wide open tends to be sharper than 10-22 wide open. I had some minor issues including one edge being sharper than the other at f/5.6. Checked by Canon and came back to me with a clean bill of health but still behaved the same way.
24-105 slaps 17-85 silly, much as I love the 17-85.
Viewfinder, end of story. I can actually *SEE* what I am composing, instead of spraying and praying with the 10-22. I'd check whether the edges were where I wanted them, click and sort it out later on computer because the VF was so small. This is a particular problem with UW lenses which shrink details. With tele lenses it is not so much of an issue.
Diffraction softening. I can stop down to f/16 vs f/11.
And even for the fact that crop cameras extend the reach of tele's, I prefer to frame loose and crop in software.
Dynamic range, nuff said.
PHENOMENAL ISO performance, nuff said.
Could go on, but I think I'm over a couple of reasons. If sports is not your MAIN priority, FF rules.

The problem with buying these lenses used is that there will be a time, if we're not already there, when Canon will no long service them. Unless there is someone willing and able to repair them, they will be so much junk in relatively short order.

$5K is on par with their very, very finest.. the thought of that becoming useless if damaged is quite frightening. Maybe that is why the 300/2.8 is very much preferred.
An updated version would be absolutely awesome. Slap IS on it and Canon would have the most fearsome light sucker on the market..

That is the thing....KEH says they have a way to service them for a while...and supposedly have a small cache of parts for them...but customers that buy the lens from them have priority. I can't believe that Canon isn't seeing the need to put some incarnation of this back into production. The trade in the used version is phenomenal and I really think the demand is there for either a retooled version of the original or even an IS model.

Oh, that's the focus limiter. Let's say you are tracking a subject with AI Servo and something gets between you and your subject. AF misses, which causes the lens to search the entire focus range (at a substantial time penalty while your subject is running around and you can't shoot). If you know your subject will be within one of those 3 ranges, you set the switch to limit the lens, so the lens will only search that range and reduce the time needed to recover from an AF miss.
Different focus speeds.. our lenses nowadays have Full Time Manual (FTM), but this is mechanical. We turn the ring, and the lens elements move by finger power. The 200/1.8 has an electrical FTM drive (fly-by-wire)... you turn the ring, and the USM moves the elements. So you can vary the speed.. low speed would involve more turning to move the elements. Enhances focusing accuracy.
Last one.. imagine a circular polarizer on that lens - you'd have a 150mm polarizer or something and that would make you go BROKE real fast ;)
With the drop-in filter, you can use a much smaller filter since it only has to cover the rear of the lens, and not in the front. ie. you put the polarizer at the back, instead of the front of the lens. Naturally, if you want 'no filter' you put a UV or clear glass in as a 'blank'.
