I was surprised at their feedback...I rarely buy outside the US either. But they obviously have several repeat buyers...considering the high end lenses they are listing I was figuring they'd be false...

oi! Not everybody from outside the US is a scammer ;)

Another community I talk to has/had some serious trust issues.. a lot of 'CONUS only' sales - I have a lot of issues with that especially as a longstanding member of their community with proven track record (including a long history of sales - 99.5% intl'). The gringoism got so bad it even alienated friends of the US such as myself. Glad to see not all Americans are like them though.. thankfully they remain in the minority.

yeah, one never "needs" a lens like that...one just "WANTS ONE REALLY REALLY BADLY"

Oh yeah, I forgot http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/crackup.gif

yaknow I think I will just buy the 200/2.8 and keep quiet ;) then again I already have a 200/2.8, just that it's one end of a zoom.

The 200/2.8 is probably a bit sharper than the zoom, though. I have one, and the images from it bring tears to my eyes. It has the best image quality of any lens I own.

Happy Birthday, Liza!!http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/smilies/0226.gif

Thanks for that, I have learnt something new today.

the sigma is nice, but I think my camera has had some problems since I had it so I haven't really gotten some nice shots out of it yet. I got the 1.4x which I haven't used that much either.

I still don't have my camera back :( but it should be this week with any luck. The first place I am going to go is the zoo. give that sigma a real work out :) + I haven't shot any ducks with it yet.

You're welcome.. it's not a dumb question.. it's more like I spend too much time studying what makes these things work ;)

And maybe the duck part explains why the lens isn't performing ;)

The sacred Duck Shoot must be done before a lens can deliver at its max!! :D

Anyway hope you get it back and that the focus works properly this time. The Sigma can be very nice and sharp.

The 200/2.8 is probably a bit sharper than the zoom, though. I have one, and the images from it bring tears to my eyes. It has the best image quality of any lens I own.

You're tempting me :D The Sigma is weak at the 200/2.8 end too. Needs a stop to perform better. Once I back off beyond 170mm, it becomes sharp throughout. VERY sharp at 135/2.8.

Also, a question for you since you're a prime shooter - what happens when the subject gets too close to you? Let the shot go? This is what I use the zoom for, being able to zoom backwards. I usually start long and then zoom out as needed.

I've actually made a couple of purchases from Hong Kong....in cases where I can verify the seller is legit I don't mind doing an international deal. There are however some protections afforded to a US only transaction that don't apply to international deals.

You know, I don't trust much better CONUS however, dealing with the issues that result from a poor seller seem more easily resolved CONUS. Definitely no offense intended. What I purchase abroad is antique books. Somehow Europe and even AU have more of what I want than other places. Specifically Scotland is a big supplier for me...but then again those are nowhere the cost of the lenses I buy.

No worries.. I would be concerned if I was throwing $5K around too!

Just pointing out some of the other issues another community has and I should say I am really glad NOT to have them here on POTN. http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/grouphug.gif

If I buy intl' on ebay, it tends to be for only small purchases. Most expensive was an ST-E2 (HK), not exactly something you'd cry over if anything went horribly wrong. Oh, I shipped my Sigma in from the US (Ebay as well), got lucky. VERY lucky. Usually I stick to B&H though... or local camera shop even if they are say $50 more expensive. My local camera dealer has bailed me out over a very marginal lens before.. so I think it is worth that extra protection.

Wow. I really love Shakespeare. Especially his comedies. Rosalind is one of my favorite characters too...she's so spunky! I didn't think it was tragic at all. I'm not fond of the sonnets at all (afraid I hate poetry most sincerely) but I absolutely enjoy most of the plays.

If you think the Sigma is sharp, the 200L will make you cry. God, I love that lens.

What do I do when the subject gets too close? Why, I switch very quickly to the other camera on which I have either a 100 or 85mm lense mounted. ;)

You're not dumb. You just don't shoot primes all the time, like I do. Sometimes I'll have a prime mounted on one camera and a zoom on the other. I have the Sigma 70-200 at work now, so I've been using that heavy SOB. It has great IQ, though.

Thanks ;) yeah, I would probably do the same, prime on one, zoom on the other. I tend to think in terms of carrying only one camera at a time though, but really I should start thinking of two, especially since I now have the capability to do that.

The Sigma has nice colors though, and that was noticed even by my audience whose idea of a high performance camera is a P&S ;) no offence to them but it does say something about the colors being obvious enough that even those who do not yet have the 'eye' will catch it.. and that's what matters.

At our playoff game, I actually had the audacity to carry three. Didn't want to miss anything. The videographers from the news gave me some good natured crap about it, though.

The Sigma lens does have nice colors. It's pretty close to the L lenses of the same focal length. And most people wouldn't see the difference. The Sigma zoom I covet is the 120-300. Now that's a lens. :)

Your right about the 120-300, that's a very nice piece of glass. I think sigma is getting alot of people buying that lens. it's interesting to see tho in the canon line up you don't have something of the same range at the same focal length

However one lens I would love to have a go with is the sigma 300-800 F5.6 :)

24-105 kicking rear again.. 1/8, f/4, ISO 800, sharp even on A4 print. You need to pixel peep it to see that it's not as sharp as it MIGHT have been on a tripod.. but I was not carrying a pod that day.

True...husband is also a civil war buff. Actually he's interested in most history. I got fascinated by Lee though...sometimes thought he was insane...sometimes brilliant. That must have been a horribly difficult war, since those generals were fighting side by side in other wars/battles. We have a civil war diary of my husband's great great grandfather. He was in Andersonville prison during the civil war. The eyewitness accounts of an actual relative are both horrifying and filled with amazement....that anyone survived is incredible...(I won't say unscathed...just survived.)

Hamilton is the 4th largest city in New Zealand. total population is about 120,000. The city it self is located in the heart of the waikato, which is a dairy country. the city has the longest river in NZ running thru it called the waikato river.

We have manged to get the rights for the SuperV8 series motorr acing, the WRC Rally and the biggest event for the farming community in the southern hemisphere , the field days.

most of the waikato is flat and there's not much of a place I can go to take a city wide shot. I have only lived here for about 5 years and I do keep asking people if they know of a place. alas no :(

yes, I agree...I'd heard that before...but I never really comprehended it until I read this. Talk about heart rending. Grandfather lost his heels in that prison...but he survived...

Only the very strong and the very lucky survived that hell hole. I had a teacher that was always harping about man's inhumanity to man....that place was the epitome.

You need a big step ladder Mark!

that's true. one of the advantages of where I live is the fact that everything is so close. I am 1 hour away from the biggest city in NZ, Auckland. 1 hour from each cost and during the winter 1 hour from the snow.

And yet I have never been to the snow

that's a shame. the river can be a place where it can bring together for events. each year Hamilton hosts the "great race" (http://www.thegreatrace.co.nz/) which is a rowing event.

And they are trying to get more and more things for the people to do by the river.

Woolburr

Well...these people are some real prizes...several of the former members of the city council made a deal with the devil and closed down a local race track. The track had a long and storied history in American racing....and generated millions of dollars in revenue to the community each year. It was decided it made too much noise and was disturbing the tourists, so the politicians passed a law pertaining to noise at outdoor venues that there was no possible way that the track could comply with. They ran the track into bankruptcy and then bought it for a song. Now it is a park that really serves no purpose. Real slime balls in the local government have made yet another brilliant decision.

Lightstream
11th of December 2006 (Mon), 03:09
Crazy.. just crazy.

If it was making millions of dollars, those dollars had to come from somewhere. I imagine a sizeable portion of those dollars come from the tourists who visit.. you should see Melbourne AU during the racing season. The horse racing season peaks in November when "The Cup that stops the nation" is running, then there were the V8 Supercars recently at Philip Island.. could name so many more but each and every time the hotels are completely booked out with both the tourists and the locals.

So it would hardly be 'disturbing the tourists'.. they come for it! :D

Oh well, just another unfathomable decision...

Somehow I ended up shopping with a friend of mine... We have this wonderful routine.. goes something like this..

me- "now Kate I will not use any kind of credit card. don't let me"
her- "well damn I have to use a credit card so don't let me write checks"
me- "I'm not going over a hundred dollars."
her- "me neither"

two hours later...

me- "it's a great sweater but I already bought one and I've spent ninety bucks I'm gonna skip it"
her- "Sari it's wonderful on you and it's not like you can spend anything up in the boonies"
me- "I don't really need it"..
her- 'eye roll telling me that that is sooo not the point'..
me- "I'm gonna skip it"

spent 120 bucks... It's a great sweater. We really need to not shop together...

Kate comes in handy because she tells me to just buy it and shut up when I want to go cheap on myself.. I think everyone does that.. But, I was productive.. Deer Santa,

Dear Billy,

Nice spelling. You're on your way to a career in

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

I don't know if you can do this, but for Christmas, I'd like for my

mommy and daddy to get back together. Please see what

Love, Teddy

Dear Teddy,

Look, your dad's banging the babysitter like a screen door in a

hurricane. Do you think he's gonna give that up to come back

to your frigid mom, who rides his ass constantly?

It's time to give up that dream. Let me send you some Legos instead.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

I want a new bike, a Playstation 2, a train,some G.I. Joes, a dog, a

drum kit, a pony and a tuba.

Love, Francis

Dear Francis,

Who names their kid "Francis" nowadays. I bet

you're gay. I'll set you up with a Barbie.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

I left milk and cookies for you under the tree,

and I left carrots for your reindeer outside the back

door.

Love, Susan

Dear Susan,

Milk gives me diarrhea and carrots make the

deer fart in my face when riding in the sleigh. You want to do me

a favor? Leave me a bottle of Scotch.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

What do you do the other 364 days of the year?

Are you busy making toys?

Your friend, Thomas

Dear Thomas,

All the toys are made in China. I have a condo

in Vegas where I spend most of my time making low-budget porno films. I

unwind by drinking myself silly and squeezing the asses of cocktail

waitresses while losing money at the craps table. Hey, you wanted to know.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

Do you see us when we're sleeping, do you really

know when we're awake, like in the song?

Love, Jessica

Dear Jessica,

Are you really that gullible? Good luck in

whatever you do. I'm skipping your house.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dear Santa,

I really want a puppy this year. Please, please,

please, PLEASE,PLEASE could I have one?

Love, Timmy

Dear Timmy,

That whiney begging crap may work with your

folks, but that crap doesn't work with me. You're getting a sweater

again.

Santa

************************************************** **

Dearest Santa,

We don't have a chimney in our house. How do you

get into our home?

Love, Marky

Dear Mark,

First stop calling yourself "Marky", that's why

you're getting your butt whipped at school. Second, you don't live in a

house, you live in a low-rent apartment complex. Third, I get inside

your pad just like the boogeyman does, through your bedroom window.

Sweet dreams,

Santa

This guy's look actually reminds me of a Welsh corgi I know.... (hopefully minus the SERIOUS bad attitude the corgi has)

The 1-4 shots look a little softer though, despite being held at 1/200 compared to 1/125 for this one. Your ISO 3200 shot on the 1DM2N is SURPRISINGLY clean (noise reduction?).. very interesting....

I used no noise reduction at all...that's why some of the shots are grainy. The ones that were really noisy, I changed to special effects...If the DO worked better on the 5D, I'd use it instead of the 1-4. I liked it that much.

Lightstream

That means your ISO 3200 on the 1DM2N is impressively clean... the one peeking over the fence has hardly anything at "L" size.

Your 1.3X crop factor would mean the DO had the 70-300's range.. actually come to think of it, DO + 1DM2N is same weight as the 1-4 + 5D... but the DO has state of the art IS.

Permagrin
11th of December 2006 (Mon), 20:19
It did do pretty well...though not as good as the 5D, IMO. I just had to work a lot harder on exposure...and in the woods, that's nearly impossible! That's why some of the noses are blown.

I wonder if the DO would work with a 1.4x tc using autofocus. I did love that lens. Although I still don't think it works as well on the 5D....but it was a wicked duo with the MKIIN. It did do pretty well...though not as good as the 5D, IMO. I just had to work a lot harder on exposure...and in the woods, that's nearly impossible! That's why some of the noses are blown.

True.. it's not "5D clean" either. The 5D's dynamic range (DR) and noise are still king.. a closer inspection (peeping as much as I can because your originals are not available - don't worry about that) shows that it is still not quite 5D caliber.

In JPEG you can selectively use dodge/burn to control DR, I wish they had dodge/burn tools available in RAW where the data is so I can 'paint' the blown spots on my own pics.

I wonder if the DO would work with a 1.4x tc using autofocus. I did love that lens. Although I still don't think it works as well on the 5D....but it was a wicked duo with the MKIIN. You should see my tiger shots with that combo...unbelievable...(I don't have them in my gallery yet or I'd post them...)

It might, actually. For kicks, I tried my cheap crap Kenko teleconverter on my 1D with the 70-300 IS (non-DO), it AF's but performance is very marginal.. very hit and miss and the micro-USM keeps stalling. (yup.. betcha haven't heard that).

Perhaps the 5D is outresolving the DO.. entirely possible as they said, the huge FF sensor throughly beats up on anything not all there. The 1Ds classic already beat the older EF 28-70/2.8L into the ground, Canon had to re-release their top of the line standard zoom just to handle the 1Ds.. which is not far removed from the 5D - in fact we have an additional 1MP over the 1Ds!!

I need to go to another meeting now but believe me, all thanks to you and your wolves, I now have visions of either a 300/2.8 with mad teleconverters or a 400 DO dancing through my head........

If you see this idiot running through the local park with a Computrekker fully loaded with gear, huffing and puffing, that will probably be me working out.... I NEVER work out... but one needs to train to carry the 300/2.8 and full tripod....

Such is the power of a few photos... geez...

Yeah, you can really see it (the diff. btw. high iso's) in my cougar comparison photos. The ones with the MKIIN are considerably noisier at 3200 than the 5D...the cougar was in a completely shaded enclosure...there was no way to shoot it w/o the 3200. And, ultimately, it was after that trip/because of that shoot, I sold the MKIIN and bought the 5D. I was so happy with the results the second time we went. And yes, if you ever come to the PNW, we'll take you to WA and show you the NW wilderness trek. It's about 4hrs from here...so it's at least an overnight trip...but worth doing. We usually spend one day there, spend a day at the Seattle zoo and one at Pike st. market/Seattle aquarium....it's a fun trip and huge shooting opportunities.

You'd love the trek. The grizzlies are amazing, several different species of large cat (though no tigers), buffalo...just lots of stuff...and I'd never seen...cougars...um, copulating in the wild, until that place...so it's definitely an education...plus your favorite owls are there...one of these days I'll get the actual gallery for those shoots up. But right now I'm averaging about 6-7 shots/hr PP...so it'll be a while...I usually come back from a trip like that w/over 1K of shots.

back! (lots of loose ends to wrap up before I can go)

http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/cry.gif why isn't there anything near as breathtaking near where I am..

I'm also having thoughts like:
- Why is the 300/2.8 ISL so expensive ($3.9K.. almost $4K)
- I'd like to bring the Eye of Sauron on the trek (200/1.8, $5K)
- Or the DO's light weight appeals to me (400/4, $5.3K)
- Why isn't there any way of getting to 400/4 at an affordable price
- I miss my 300 f/4L IS already
- But wish the 300/4 IS was state of the art
- Maybe I should consider getting the 70-200/2.8 ISL (this nonsense AGAIN!) so I can get 280mm f/4.0 with a teleconverter

PG!!!!! You and your wolves will be the end of me!!!!!!!! Just like you being done to death by the birds, I will be done to bankruptcy by the furry ones!

If it helps, 200 isn't a good length for the Trek. I used the 24-105 for the herbivore acreage and the 100-400 on 400 always, in the carnivore section. I'm sure you have cool things where you are! No wolves though. Sorry about that. I've got some shots of some white ones, somewhere...but I'll get them up soon.

I love having the firepower to get the job done right.. and I am thinking that PG needs one more stop of light, no matter how that gets done.

This would be the perfect situation for the 400/5.6 ISL.

No, I didn't really enjoy my birthday. I worked all day and then listened to the kids argue this evening. At least I got the tree up and decorated. Once the kids move out, I'm not doing it anymore.

One more stop would have helped. I know those wolves looked like they were standing still but they were NOT...fast buggers...unless they were sleeping, like that one was. But I've decided I'm not spending that kind of money on glass. I'm having fun with what I've got. (and it's paid for ;) ).
