New shooter coming out.
I just got home from driving to Los Angeles and back today. I'm sure not as young as I used to be. There was a time a little 350-mile drive in L.A. traffic didn't tucker me out.
No more.
What did I miss?

My first experience to LA was in July of 75....I left San Diego to visit with some friends that lived in Glendora. Went by motorcycle....started raining near Camp Pendleton....first time it had rained in months...I-5 became a giant skating rink....I was on the verge of a tear or two myself.

hello everyone. I hope everyone is doing well this evening or morning, depending on your location :)
I couldn't imagine anything like the LA freeway. I think the auckland is bad enough and in some places that's just 4 lanes.

The rain started falling and I could see my life flashing before my eyes. That is the scariest experience I have ever had driving. I couldn't get off that road and parked fast enough to suit me. After 10-15 minutes of rain....the roads just were wet...the oil and crap finally washed off...the other part that made it so bad was the pavement in that area is textured....the concrete surface was finished with a vibrating broom....so it had a series of little twists and turns....add the oil and water to it....and it was a total nightmare.
Howdy Mark.

I have had my fair share of bad driving conditions.. But, I have to say the worst ones are up here... driving miles of Idaho canyon is just about the worst.. knowing that a little bit of black ice can have your car going into the Payette River sure puts things in perspective...

I started driving as a teenager in Los Angeles almost 50 years ago, and it was bad then. Now, it's just godawful. We try to time our trips so that we don't get there till after 10:00am, and try to be out of there by 3:00pm. Today, we had no choice since we were meeting a plane at L.A. International in the morning, and had to stay for dinner. We did have one 'experience.' My wife wanted to go to Rodeo Drive to look at the stores, and we saw Ted Danson walking out of Saks 5th Avenue on Wilshire Boulevard. That wasn't much of a highlight for all the aggrevation.

I imagine the roads still do the same thing when you a get rain after an extended dry spell? I was just amazed at how slippery it got. Way worse than any snow or ice I have ever been on....I just knew I wasn't going to get slowed down before I hit something.
BTW...Ted Danson beats seeing Oprah!

I try very hard not to think what those 3 might be up to.
The fog here in the mountains is beyond belief sometimes. Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway can be a treat. One minute you have a nice bright sunny day and the next you are in fog so thick that you can hardly even see the windshield much less anything beyond it. You should have stopped and said hi if you were that close!

Chicago during rush hour is pretty bad, too. And if you get lost in the wrong neighborhood, it can be downright scary. I took a wrong turn on the south side once, and a crazy guy started chasing my car and throwing beer bottles at me. Up there, you just have to drive in the center lane really fast, never look in your rear view mirror, and cut people off when you want to get on the exit ramp.
I hate ice. I really, really hate black ice seeing the shine on the road because of your headlights and feeling your car fishtail... there's nothing worse..
I agree. I'd rather drive in deep snow than ice any time.
And I must tell you, this has turned out to be the crappiest day I've had in months. I keep pissing people off and don't intend to. Using the written word on forums or in PM/IM sometimes leads to misunderstandings. I made a teasing post in response to a dear friend's post on a forum only to have four different people jump down my throat and get two crappy PM's about it. Sometimes it doesn't even pay to get out of bed.

There are some folks that just take everything way too seriously and don't take into account the fact that people might actually have friends here that they could joke around with. Hmm? Bad day? Yup...sounds like mine.
I had a good dinner with a couple of people I do enjoy working with.....
Then I had someone else let me down so hard that I feel like slamming the door in the face of any and everybody else who ever knocks again in future. Who needs friends like that when they make a bad situation worse, when you are left to solve your own problems, when they scream at you for doing something stupid when they knew what you were doing and made no effort to stop you because they don't care. Why do they even care afterwards is beyond me.... or perhaps it is because they want to rub it in.
Who needs people? I am so used to living life alone and solving my own problems apart from my best friends - I am done with people. If anybody (who isn't already on the list of people I care about) wants to get to know me, they are going to have to climb some fences.

I'm getting bored. and thinking about leaving and going somewhere else. That gypsy streak runs deep. I called my friend last night and mentioned that I might get bored enough to move to san diego through the winter he just laughed and said I have no staying power for anything in my life. at all. ever. and made me a little concerned that that might actually be true.. But, I just kinda wanna go.. Really want to. Just get a storage unit put all of my furniture in it. Pack up the car and go for a drive. I usually like this time of morning but lately the butta$$ crack of dawn has been less appealing! I was always up and out of the house in the dark to walk to wherever I wanted to shoot that morning regardless of weather. Now I hate even opening an eye. lol I have to get back into the habit of shooting soon.

If you have the means to do so and places you want to go, do it! When you find the right place, you will stay. My sanity was saved often by taking trips even though all I wanted was to pull up and go for good. Now I don't even take trips anymore IF I had no kitties, I'd do the visiting prof thing for a few years. Just take what I had to have and spend a year in different areas of the country. Other than cats, I am unfettered, but pets are family for me so there's no handing them out like party favors or sending them to an animal shelter.

Not too old!! You seem like a woman who likes a challenge and has places to go and new things to see. Do it while you can. Perhaps I would be more at ease here if I could find a way to see something new when I do get out to shoot. everything appears the same to me. I've lost my "eye" and am slowly losing my skills. Your friends have your best interest at heart, I'm sure, but they are not you and only you can decide where you need to be and when. Their life may work for them but may be all wrong for sari.
You have skills and talents that can take you anywhere. Go where you can flex them and grow. when the time is right for settling in, I bet you will recognize it.

thanks Wu... he wasn't giving me a hard time twelve years of history and he's allowed to tease me a bit here and there... I probably won't go anywhere until next fall but I do get these moods where it's time to get out of dodge.. doesn't really matter where i'm at or what i'm doing.. maybe I will settle down when i'm ready.. But, I do remember my aunt telling me when I was eighteen to give it five years and i'll feel differently... nothing much has changed since then as soon as I settle into a place, job, new home, relationship.... whatever and start to feel patterns develop I want to pick up stakes and head somewhere new.. Has been this way for as long as I can remember and I don't ever think i've been 'content' whatever that's supposed to mean...

I am amazed at the number of PMs this thread generates from people thinking that we are too harsh on this person or that one...or that we shouldn't tease at all.
I don't think I've received any either...not re: our being to harsh on anyone. You must be either the favored villian of the thread or the one people thinks the the most responsible...

Foster: Do I look like a cat to you, boy? Am I jumpin' around all nimbly-bimbly from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer? DO YOU SEE ME EATING MICE?
[The man is uncontrollably laughing.]
Foster: You stop laughing right meow!
Driver: [Stops and swallows hard.] Yes sir.
Foster: Meow, I'm gonna have to give you a ticket on this one. No buts meow. It's the law.
