Sari, do you know anything more about the movie? Who's in it or anything?
we had a long thread about it awhile ago.. it's about a group of South African photographers a docudrama I think... But, It wasn't out yet I think it might be now...

I joined Netflix.... There's a few friends up here who have it and love it.. so I figured why not?.. But, I want to see that movie about the photographer in South Africa... anybody remember what it's called?
I'd be interested in more details, also. This weekend I want to see "We Are Marshall." That's the one about the football team that's killed in a plane crash, I believe. Given that's the name of my town, I thought it might be interesting.

There is occasionally a body and lens combo that don't play well together. Your other lenses work fine on the 5D...and the 100-400 works fine on the 30D...you might have to send the pair in to be calibrated to each other.

(one more photography question...sorry ;) )
Yes, my other lenses do work just fine on the 5D....at first, when I was shooting today, I was beside myself because I wasn't getting a sharp shot at all with the combo...and not one with the DO IS either...I'd forgotten that the DO IS really never worked very well on the 5D. But then I switched focusing subjects to less reflective material and got a sharp series with the 1-4.
My next question is why would it work some of the times (exactly the same circumstances) with the 5D and not always...(and worked with the 30D the whole time)?

Very interesting. The 5D shot looks like motion blur to me, however. Is your stabilizer running? (should not be on tripod)
The other shots are fine though, so that is really wierd. That means the lens SHOULD be able to deliver.

That's the wierd part... I know you mounted it and remotely triggered it.
Belmondo has a good point about MLU, but as I recall, the 30D's mirror has far more substantial 'recoil' than the 5D. In fact, as I recall, my 20D's mirror has even more recoil than my 1-series, which is better damped despite having an extremely fast 8fps mirror.

I KNOW! I took several shots of that first series and did not get one sharp one...I checked every custom function I've got. Turned off the hidden focus points, made sure it was on One Shot...there was no reason it should be soft with the 5 part of the time and not all...(and yet, this is EXACTLY the trouble I'm having in the field...but I didn't have it at all with the 30D.)

I noticed that. I made sure the 30's settings were the same too. Do you think it's a camera problem then? Although, I haven't had any problems with any other lens than the 1-4. Both sets of images were shot in raw but I also did a test jpeg on the 5D to see if that made a difference...it was sharper and still oof.

Normally, we the pixel peepers and camera geeks who are supposed to be familiar with what makes the beast tick are capable of rendering a diagnosis.. but between all of us we are still quite perplexed.
Could you help me check what your 5D's firmware version is?
There is indeed a big difference as Wool has pointed out.. and as you yourself said with the DO and the 1DM2N. It may not be the DO - it may be the 1DM2N.
BTW, I thought your 30D was headed to new skies?

at the end of the day I found I was getting the same results at 100mm with both the sigma and the canon macro. with the sigma it was focusing fine at 300mm. in fact it was dead on.
to me I would have thought it wouldn't have mattered if it was 100 or 300mm. as part of the testing I used the flash. I had thought the above images you had used a flash. If you had used an external flash then that is going to help the camera autofocus. hence why in the above shot I linked to, with the flash it was dead on and with out the flash it wasn't.
However when I was first testing I just thought it was the sigma at fault. I had sent that away to be looked at but the company didn't find anything wrong with it. that's why I started to test the camera. If you have tested the lens on another camera and it works fine then it's not the lens.
until I figured it out I was really confused about what the camera was doing. I don't think the problem showed up on the 17-40 F4. but I didn't test it. my main worry was the sigma I had brought. I was worried that I had brought a dud. I had got it from B&H and didn't wont to send it back to them.

when I want 400, I'll use a 1.4 tc (which I have yet to purchase). It'll be close enough. Maybe if I have something lighter I'll have more consistant luck with distance shooting. It was Ed's comments that the 7-2 took a 1.4 tc like it wasn't there that made me decide to go for it. Well that and your earlier pm

  maybe I better re-think this... actually I was thinking that I'd have almost 300 at the long end w/AF and almost 400 at the long end w/the 2x MF (which I guess I'll have to get better at). I've never been happy with the 5D 1-4 combo. My shots with both our 30D's were so much better...don't know if it's the 5D's mirror slap or that it's slower to shoot than the 30's or ? ? ? ? But I'm tired of being unhappy and I don't foresee purchasing the 30D again any time soon. We also have the 200 f 2.8 that I can use for 400 w/2x tc (AF)
Lightstream

Don't stick a 2X TC on the 70-200's.. :( you will quite likely be unhappy..
Luminous Landscape tested both and even their believed-to-be-iffy 100-400 blew away the 70-200 2.8 ISL with a 2X TC until around f/11 or so and even then it was still better.
See, when I'm not drooling over my favorite animals, I'm wondering about the hardware it takes to get good photos of them in their low-light residence.. :) you can bet I will be musing about 400 options on the flight today :p

Well, better than a 200/2.8 with 2X TC (which seems to be quite OK, but is not optimal: remember every TC forces you to take an IQ hit), is a 400/5.6.
Both of them share the same limitation: no stabilizer.
Or are the bowflex and elliptical giving you the Arms of Steel to handhold that (even after hiking into the trails) at 1/200 steady? ;) (arms tend to turn to jelly after a long day even when holding a 5D and 24-105 :( )

I'll tell you what's my solution.... go buy an XTi. :D
No kidding. Apart from the XTi bashers, let's step backwards and take a moment to evaluate it based on technical features.
Build quality is fairly robust. I checked my XT into CARGO in a daypack. (now that is balls of steel). XT made it just fine.
QCD - I admit, tremendously useful for fast moving events but not when you are locked at f/5.6 AV wide open and just firing at woodland animals.
Price - quite forgiving.
AF engine - subpar on the XT in challenging situations, now upgraded to the 20D and 30D AF engine. This is the MAIN concern.f/5.6 will not enable the precision sensors anyway
1.6X crop - nice.... someone I'm PMing is saying stuff like we should have kept the 300/4 ISL because it becomes a 480mm on crop while retaining f/4 which I wanted, although the IS system is an older version.
Or alternatively combine the XTi and the 724ISL with TC to deliver a 450/5.6 with state of the art stabilizer.
High ISO performance/DR performance - things admittedly could get tricky.
Alternatively, buy a superb 300 and stick a TC on it, but even the other fans of the 300/4 ISL admit that it only starts to perform at its best around f/7.1. This is commensurate with my experience (cheap TC though). Needs an extra stop to be at its best and we don't have an additional stop.
I am not driving you nuts am I? :p
Send it back to Canon for calibration. :)

13th of December 2006 (Wed), 16:17
Man that 400/5.6 really needs IS. The birders might not (I don't, not when chasing birds), but we woodland animal shooters need it.
BTW, if you are actually considering that, I do recommend it even though I did not own it.. the handling and dynamics are superb and it feels so strangely light even though it isn't. (1.2kg compared to 1.4 for the 1-4)
*realizes he is talking to himself....*
PS: puddle if you are reading this.. I am trying to save your 200/2.8 from being permanently moved to the Other gear list ;)
