Told you would like it. Realistically it isn't all that loud :)
Heh.. I liked the wake up call - I had to abandon the 50 macro shortly after I checked whether it worked at all, because I had to run off to work...another hell day on the frontier. My 30D had no CF loaded when I was testing it, nor did I care, as long as the lens aperture and AFD worked properly I was cool, I will do the pixel peeping later this evening.
A few months ago I transferred to a different division (still within my AU posting) and things absolutely stink here. There's the "I don't care, let the bureaucracy sort it out" culture and as I discovered today, the height of ungratefulness.
Ever had someone so ungrateful they scold you when you deliberately stayed back to say thank you to them? I can't see WTF I have done to this person, in fact I have helped them prior and they were grateful for it. I see the good things are so quickly forgotten. But that's ok, I too can forget - and I will.
I bought breakfast for my colleagues since we are wrapping up a huge project milestone and these are the people who have taken care of me since it began.. for that I am grateful.
OTOH I am grateful UPS did not cark up my 50 Macro's delivery, and more importantly, I finally landed that bottle of Jim Beam Small Batch - a very exclusive blend that's not readily available even in well-stocked bottle shops.

The trick is to drink lots of water *BEFORE* you go to bed...... someone taught me this a long time ago and it works flawlessly.
If you get up in the middle of the night, more water.
.. besides aren't you a bit young to be drinking? :p
Anyway, on to other things like the 50 macro. My thoughts.

Now they want me to call a toll free number in USA which by the way is not toll free from Denmark. And they want me to fax details to them on paper that has company lettehead on. Damn Adobe I don't have company letterhead as I am a private person. Arrgghhhh.

I have had hell this week too. However, Jim Beam Small Batch bourbon totally rules.... it is nothing quite like anything I have had before. Not even JB Black, which is my preferred way to die.
Small Batch is hand-prepared and hand-bottled, hence the name. They also add port to it, and I love a good port. The end result and taste is so unbelievably smooth.... not even their 8 year old Black label product compares.
And the 50 Compact Macro really is quite a nice lens. Sharp at all ranges, too. Which is more than what I could say about some of the recent lenses I've handled.....

Well, I had my heart set on the 100-400 and was all ready to press “checkout” but then I borrowed a friends 17-55 f/2.8 and the lens just blew me away. Pics looked better in the LCD for goodness sakes and when I compared the two on my monitor the difference was so stark that even my non-photographic wife noticed. So I went wide and got the 10-22 and the 17-55 rounding out the wide end first. Toss in a new flash, a polarizer and flash bracket and I have the makings of a fun weekend. Back to saving for the 100-400 but hey, got something to look forward to again ;).

Thanx. I am looking forward to doing some side buy side comparisons between the kit and the 17-55 this weekend, maybe do some serious measurbating. I really never realized how little I have played in the < 50mm area because all I had was the kit lens until I got to play with the 17-55. It’s a whole range I tended to ignore.

Most of the time 17mm on a crop camera works for me - every-so-often the 10-22 or 10-20 stares at me - but I don't live around too many wide-angle landscape areas, so I figure "why bother?" -- but I would be interested in your 10-22 shots.

I have the new 70-300 IS right now. I seem to have a pretty good copy. I had a real hard time deciding and wish I could have spent a bit more time with the 100-400. Looking over all the stats, the MTF50 looked just marginally better than the 70-300. CA is obviously better in the 400 but both are so low to begin with, and both had almost no vignetting. I wish I knew a bit more on how to compare the optical qualities of lenses. The engineer in me wants numbers, but when I saw the difference between the kit and 17-55 no numbers were needed. It was that apparent.
Permagrin
1st of June 2007 (Fri), 11:31
I'm not an engineer and I think that RL comparisons are more important anyway :)
I don't know anything about the 70-300 but if it works, then that's all that matters. I'm still on this kick that "one does NOT need to spend a fortune to get a decent lens" (if one chooses to, that's entirely another matter :) ). I spend like I should be earning an income from my gear...I need to stop doing that (she says as she closes down the web page with the MkIII) or I need to EARN some money with my gear
I'm not saying that there aren't differences in quality, just that in some cases, the differences aren't enough to warrant the cost increase...

But first a shot of an animal I really hope to see and photograph when I go to Namibia. Well it probably will not be this exact species because there are only about 50 Amur Leopards left in the wild :(
Unfortunately I had to shoot through a fine mesh fence which affects the photo.
Usually they are inactive when I come by but today the Leopard just climbed the tree and faced me. After that shot the Leopard turned around and climbed down from the tree again.

AHH!!! I HATE SHOTS!! AND I HAVE TO GO GET A TETANUS SHOT THIS AFTERNOON!
I haven't had one in about 14 years... I hate shots so I have been putting it off, well I finally managed to cut with a rusty nail today at work... and well it isn't that bad (only a little deeper than a cat scratch.. but I don't think it is worth the risk...
I hate them, but I know I need one. Oh well, the possible alternative isn't a good one.

I too hate shots and had to go through the Germ Buster routine of overseas travel. It was a three month ritual where every few weeks you had to go back and get skewered. But think of it this way, One tetanus shot beats the IV, painkiller shots, antibiotics shots you’ll need if you get tetanus.
