yeah...I've been sitting here debating on which lens...I really need the zoom, now that my zoom is gone. But the bird lens would be nice. But the all purpose is important to me...that's what I mostly need...so I'll probably stick with my first plan.
The 400L is sharper and imo faster focusing than the 100-400L, not to mention lighter. I hike everywhere with it

I'm a switch-hitter (i.e. Mac and PC). I currently have a 17" MacBook Pro, and a MacPro running two 23" Apple Cinema Displays. I have 3 gigs or RAM, a 750 gig hard drive, two 300 gig hard drives, and the 250 gig drive that came with it. They brought out the 24" iMac after I bought the MacPro, or I probably would've gotten one of them instead of the MacPro. Macs aren't necessarily better computers, but they have the market cornered on 'cool.'

Hey...making pictures is a good thing...
isn't that what we all do. Make photos?
after all how many of you have move something in the way or moved yourself to make sure that something wasn't in the photograph. Just to get the right look? we make photos, just the same way a painter makes paintings.

Had the 100mm 2.0 and loved it but sold it and other gear when I needed to get the 30D and tammy. Was planning on shooting more of my work type stuff instead of play stuff ad the Tammy was more versatile. I miss the 100
I have the 100 f/2 and the 100 f/2.8. The f/2 is used for basketball and volleyball, though. It's a great lens! I have the 28-75 Tamron that I used for a lot of close up shots, too. It's a very capable lens for that type of thing.
So in principle, you are also opposed to cannonball contests in the hot tub?
How about back flips off the side? Now that would be a sight worth seeing.
I want to make photos.
I do, too. But I really don't "make" photos until summer when I have extra time. All I'll be shooting from now through February is basketball. I've also had a couple more portrait requests, which will be a nice for the pocketbook in January. It's been a busy week getting photos uploaded and ordered from the lab.

I've had a request for portraits and I want to say no. It has been way too long since I shot portraits. They are friends, though and they like what I do. I'd have been a lot happier to do it in the autumn, even though we had little color.
I threatened them with poofy beehive hair and off the shoulder fur collar to try to dissuade them. They thought it was cool.
at the florist today I had no gear - just went in and was looking at the roses through the glass case. Told the woman I wanted one and which one. she asked me if I was a photographer. out of the blue. then told me to bring by my cards and any of my work I wanted to. Freaky day- even the liquor store woman asked if I was a photographer.
i am assuming they may have seen me around town but it was weird.

well you don't have to open a studio and make a career at it.. I don't think i'd want to even if I could.. but, you can shoot for yourself.. taking the gigs you want to do when you want to do them.. and passing on stuff you're not interested in.. there has to be a middle ground..

me too.. But, then I think that I just like to get away from everything on a regular basis and my job is just a means to an end a way for me to live the way I want.. My photos are mine almost exclusively and aren't taken for anyone else... It's funny how quickly it turns into work.. You'd think it wouldn't that because you love it soo much it couldn't ever feel like something you're doing because you have to.. and then you take a gig are shooting compositions that come from somebody else.. have a deadline and receive a check and no matter how much you enjoy them and no matter how simple or complex the shots are they don't have the same feeling behind them.. Haven't figured out how to tackle that one. But, I do know that picking up the camera for somebody else makes it harder to pick it up for yourself...

Yes. There's no comparison. They are two very different lenses for completely different purposes. The f/2 is a fast lens with good IQ which is good for sports. It isn't a close up lens, though. The f/2.8 is a rather slow lens with breathtaking IQ and spectacular DOF. It should have been an L.
Can't do the backflips anymore...lost that with the big break....ah...to be young again.

Oh, I don't overthink, but now I'm better able to see my images objectively. I used to keep a lot of crap. Now I'm able to be more discriminating. I also find myself "seeing" potential images much more easily than I once did. Shooting the teenagers this year was so much fun as a result. I've been reviewing the work of other pros, too, in a effort to continuously develop and improve my own personal style. I find my Digital Wedding Forum membership fee to be some of the best money I've ever spent.

BTW Wool.....you want to see someone with serious gear issues; you are probably already baiting him with the Brick anyway.....
I just absolutely do not get it. How can one buy gear, turn around, and sell it with no financial penalty? Doesn't it hurt? Doesn't one consider carefully what they want, hence my AGONIZING over the zooms, before they buy? And change their mind 5 days later?
I have only ever returned one lens and that was pretty much over a serious technical fault.
I just don't get it.
But then again I am not the one with issues. I can perfectly afford to stand down on the 70-200 decision - bypassing ALL of them entirely - if I want to, and press my existing gear into service as it more than adequately does the job (though not all at once).
The ones where I have issues with are my f$#ing webservice provider.... absolutely USELESS.. I go on leave and I have to deal with this S$#T at the WORST POSSIBLE TIME!!!!
God, give me a T1 and I will host it myself just like in the good old days when men were real men, networkers were real networkers, and T1s were REAL FAST. God dammit T1s are so f$#ing expensive.

Never underestimate the power of a beer....especially when it is a gift to a boy from a female! What kind of ice cream would you like?:p
Yuk. I don't like beer at all. Used to drink it when I was a kid, but that was just for the buzz. Give me Crown Royal or some tequila any time.
I just sold mine. I had it for about 4 months...and I've had a love/hate thing with it...hated the dust issue, hated the trombone...maybe the long end of things isn't for me. Don't know yet. But someday I'll try with the 400 f5.6 and see what I think of that.
I think you'll be pleased with the prime. After you get used to using them, the fixed focal length really isn't a big deal.

makes me wonder if i'll have the same issues?... maybe maybe not.. My crazy mother wants to buy me something 'camera related' for christmas... ofcourse she has absolutely no idea what the price tags are on kit... so, I told her to get me a gift certificate to Idaho Camera....  ..
I really use my 24-105 most of the time...but on Safari, I'd definitely recommend a longer lens! Yeah, the price tags are high. I've spent so much on gear in the last year that I no longer have a budget for it...so I sold the 1-4 (why keep something that doesn't work with my style right?)

I think I'm going to get the 70-200 F4 IS first...then the prime when I can afford it. Just out of curiosity, do you like your non-IS version of that lens? Someone just said it was heavy on the thread I posted about it. I'd never heard that before....

ok- I have the tubes, I now have a Nifty, I have a rose. . . now I need Lasix surgery. Can't see worth pooh!! I actually liked last night's results from the tammy better, but the biggest problem is I just can't see to focus well.
thanks. just needed to whine and moan. :)

Which tamron do you have?
I can understand what you are saying though...the main reason I stink at MF is that I cannnot see well enough to tell if I'm locked on! Sometimes I do it opposite and AF (to get it in the ballpark) and then adjust MF...
