You know all this- It's just the same as taking any other G/N or portrait shot. Just have to see what there is to see and go from there. Just play.

I've never taken G&N stuff. I have a bride who wants me to shoot some of her, but no date has been set. I have another female friend who approached me recently and wants shots of her. I'm seriously not that bad off when it comes to female poses, that's what you see mainly anyway.

Ya know, Claire, I take my inspiration from the bod. No- really :) what are his assets? (hard to write this without giggling or making it sound rude ) skin color and texture play a big role in what I've done. . . mainly artsy-fartsy stuff.

He has light skin, not pale though. A bit colour to it. No clue about skin texture to be honest (can't say I've been close enough to check). He's pretty lean, in shape, but not big. No big muscles, lean arms. In all honesty his best feature is his face.

I happen to be fond of bodyscapes and shots with good shadow play, but some skin is just not made for that. I've shot some amazingly fit bodies and some that are nowhere close to fit, but they've all turned out really good. Got some winners from each one.

He says he likes high contrast dramatic stuff with good shadows. Guess I have to figure out how to do that well. Hm... As he's not a muscle man I am not sure how to light e.g. his shoulderblades.

Apart from that I guess I'll end up going with the cliché boyband poses. lol I am not sure how far he's willing to go really, but if he's up for bum shots, I've seen some gorgeous stuff by another photographer.

But I have a breakfast meeting later this morning, so I'm not sitting here reading while eating breakfast.

Ooooh, just got off the phone with the bride who wants me to take boudoir shots of her. She sounds like great fun! :D We're aiming for early morning or late afternoon/night in some forest. She'll bring some clothes and props, perhaps also a friend. Told me I'll of course get to use them in my portfolio and she says she's happy to experiment. She just doesn't want romantic stuff in a hotel room, but slightly more edge.

I have a question that I've been meaning to ask for a few days.

My 30D recently went over 10,000 shots. The file numbering went from IMG_9999.CR2 to IMG_0001.CR2. Why not IMG10000,CR2?

I have never understood the file numbering thing. I'm still not sure how many shots I've really taken with my 300D.

I'm hungry as well. As I'm too lazy to make any food right now I am eating microwave popcorn. LOL

Ah dangit I'll answer anyway.

The cameras use the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems (methods of storing files) based on the ancient DOS file systems (remember those?).

DOS used to be able to store just 8 characters, the dot, and 3 extension characters to designate the type of file (hence .JPG, .CR2). While we have moved beyond that, to retain compatibility with older FAT16 based systems, you are limited to 8 characters.

So, when all of this got adopted into the official DCIM standard (which explains the DCIM folders you find on your cards).... well, it's now.. uhh.. standard. Yeah. And we are stuck with it. Except for 1-series owners who get to change the first 4 chars..

Anyway being called gearhead at work gets me paid so it's not all bad anyway :p

Okay, what do you think......

I could sell my 5D, 30D and 24-105 and cover most the cost of the MKIII....but it would leave me with one camera...but then I wouldn't have to be switching cameras all the time to shoot birds or shoot landscape. Puddle is fine with it but since he'd be covering the part that isn't covered by the lenses, Hawaii for my bday is out....

so, opinions?
Bad move. You'll miss having the second body with lens available. Hold off until you can replace one of the cameras with the M3.
my main reason for wanting to switch is the ease of only one camera. I hate hauling 2 bags w/2 full systems...I want the IQ of the 5D (which really is amazing) combined with the speed of the 30D (or faster). Hopefully this will solve my issues. :) Eventually.Nope - what you need to do is re-examine your gear list. You don't need to duplicate coverage for both bodies. No need to have UWA for both formats and equivalent tele for both formats - let the bodies use the lenses which play to their strengths. My 20D never sees the 15-30 any more, and rarely the 24-70 (well, that's partly because I put the 24-105 on it and keep using the 24-70 on the 5D). The 5D practically never, OTOH, sees the 100-400. The 70-200, however, goes everywhere.
??? ???
? I take it you think I'm making a mistake Wooly? :(As you may guess, I agree with him . . .

"TR"

"Wool's new lens"
Wool's? not Tom's?

And if it doesn't work out, I get a new M3, and she gets a slightly used 30D. ;)Ahah! I see the devious source of this sudden passion now! Good thinking, Captain. You come out the winner once it settles down. Just remember that in the mean time she'll be trying to grab your cameras, not just lenses . . .

Boring Riley speaks with wisdom!

Okay, I have a serious question. Remember the light fall off with the 5D (see Riley's Avi for an example). Was this due to lack of skill or a phenomena of the body/lens combo. If it's the equipment, does that always happen with certain lenses?Design thing - it's called the cos^4 law. Factors are the angle light exits the lens to strike the sensor - the greater the angle the more the light spreads out before it hits the sensor. One factor is how wide an angle the lens is (24 would be worse than a 100) but there's also where the rear nodal point for the lens is (closer it is to the mirror box, the greater the falloff will be). That's why not all lenses of the same f.l. have the same problem. The other big factor is how big the aperture is - the wider the lens entry pupil is (what you se ewhen you look a the front of the lens), the wider angle the light will be going through to hit the sensor. And this is why stopping down helps compensate for the light falloff - you reduce the entry pupil, so the falloff doesn't get as bad. It's the opposite of physical vignetting (where the lens hood/filter edges/etc. get in the way of the image-forming light) that way - physical vignetting won't look as bad if you open up since reduced DoF mitigates the problem.

TD:

Light fall off is not gear Dependant per say.. I has more to do with focal length and the respective aperture.. I.E I have a shot at f8 or 11 at 17mm and no fall off. You were shooting wide or almost wide open with the 50... Just play around.. and enjoy it.. you can help fix it to some degree with lightroom (I believe anyways).

but it doesn't do it on my 85 at any aperture...not even 1.2....that's why I think some lenses are more prone to it...because the 17-40 behaves better than the 24-105 on f4 and the 24-105 behaves on f4 better after about 30mm and up than it does on 24mm'Tis true - the generalization is wides are worse and fast lenses are worse, but you'll also find it worse in extreme zooms because they tend to try to make the rear end of the lens act like a wide angle all (or most of) the time.

My goodness, a whole half hour has gone by with no comments - must be the longest break ever, in this thread ;)

Nope. There has been times were 6-8 hours passed with no comments.

Nah, must be a typo -6-8 minutes I can believe, surely not hours!
Nope - hours. Usually when Permie's gone running over to TPbm :{)#
A few notes for Claire from today's shoot with the P&S..

1. P&S flash sucks
2. Color balance with the flash sucks (be prepared to fix in Photoshop - and you'd better know how to do it in JPEG mode because there ain't no RAW's on these A-series Powershots)
3. P&S flash sucks
4. P&S flash sucks
5. P&S flash sucks
6. You will therefore shoot a great deal more available light. I cannot play all the tricks I do with my 430EX and I really miss that.
7. Handshake blur sucks
8. Handshake blur sucks
9. Handshake blur sucks (in case you didn't get it the first time)
10. Buy IS.. BUY IS.....BUY IS!!!!!!

High ISO is terrible as well. I was shooting just ISO 200 and already we were seeing chroma and digital noise all over the place, it was absolutely awful. In fact the GOOD thing about the motion blurred shot that my friend took is that the noise also got blurred out in the process somehow (either that, or there was no detail to sharpen anyway, hence reducing noise impact). You really have to stick to ISO 100 and that will cost you dearly in terms of shutter speed since these P&S do not have tremendously fast lenses anyway.

So really, IS is worth it.. I bought this P&S over a year ago, before IS became the hottest thing in Powershots. Talk about depreciation. Anybody wants an A530? I want an IS point and shoot!
Ah, I see the Curse of Dagobah has struck you again! Seriously, my A620 does pretty darn well under most conditions.
The 430 is pretty old..... you could be well served by an upgrade to the A-series if you really need a P&S. Then let your SLR do the heavy duty work. I carry the P&S when I am not expecting to need a whole lot of camera.

I just changed the batteries out to lithium AA's for long standby and increased power.. you can barely get 50 shots out of standard alkalines. NiMH is useless beacuse of self-discharge (I don't have enough Eneloops to go around). Plus it's winter here and it's getting cold.

As a plus point, it's now a tremendously lightweight camera thanks to the lithium cells :)Just finished several hundred shots over the past couple of weeks on the (4x) NiMH AA cells in the A620, and they've been in the camera for a few(I forget how many) weeks before that - at least 6 weeks I think. The 2xAA A-series seem to be more demanding on the batteries than the 4xAA models. There's a thread on this up in the P&S section.

I have a question that I've been meaning to ask for a few days.

Anyway being called gearhead at work gets me paid so it's not all bad anyway :pAnd besides, the DCIM spec says the file name is to be 8.3, so even though there are work-arounds for long file names under FAT16 and FAT32 (witness Win95 on up) to be standards-compliant the name has to be a constant 4-character string followed by a 4-digit number.

Actually the A530 is quite OK. It just needs IS. Still happy with it. 2xAA is indeed more demanding, half the voltage and twice the current (which alkalines are not happy to supply, lithiums are just fine). It works as intended, just that I am pushing it in situations that it shouldn't be pushed (ie. trying to shoot available light in very low light). Didn't bring my 5D.

This is actually my glovebox camera, hence very long standby times, so I prefer lithium AA's.

Agreed about DCIM, now we are stuck ;)

If you do, use a UV filter. Lens hoods don't protect against splashes, even if their proponents seem to believe that they somehow do.

You know what's worse than not having a M3? Gearing up to buy it and getting derailed at the last moment because it won't take your UWA and you have neither room to carry a second body or funds to keep it.

That's because IS is stupid and only for wusses! You need a 200/1.8, now that's a real man's lens! And you should only shoot cats in a tree at ISO 100 in the sun with a 1DsM2 because shooting in the shade is 'too pro'!

Don't forget the filter vs hood debate.

There are some in the LF who believe that not only do hoods magically shield your lens against dust and water that flies straight INTO your lens (ever tried an EW-83E while shooting in coastal conditions?), they also believe that not using a hood decreases the size of your manhood.

I *KNOW* my d#@k is big, I don't need to prove it.

How's that for unbridled arrogance? ;)

So while I think 'face detection' is a gimmick (and 45-point AreaAF for teh win!), for the n00b it may be absolutely vital to getting that shot.

I think that the only reason face dection exists is so that the silly little buggers with the crappy myspace photos can get there faces in focus when they hold the camera out in front of themselves..

Gah, I hate stupid people and stupid people's myspaces

Yes, she's a goat, not a puppy, but altogether typical of small animals being photographed! (A620 shot by my wife, at my request). This was not staged, however - Gracie poked her nose right in there on her own.

No arguments from me either. I especially like them on the softball field in the wind. I don't like a lot of the dirty/sandy fields adding there contents to my front element...

I read some of these 'blogs' and pages when I need to either laugh myself stupid or stare in horror at the degenerate mindsets of our counterparts. Or when I need to blow my mind and the two Great American Inventions (Jim Beam and Coke, preferably mixed) don't work so well.

If I attempt to do so under any other circumstances, my eyes feel like they'll bleed.

I was once upon a time concerned about my photos being considered 'snapshots'. Then I saw what P&S and cellphone cameras are REALLY used for and I never worried again. Ahh, the cellphone generation.

I've decided to leave my cell at home more of the time and turn it on only when *I* want it on. The camera shop owes me a new Lowepro LC4, I told them to SMS me when it came in, instead of call me - you can't get me by voice when I don't feel like being reachable, far better to leave a TEXT message and I will get back when I feel like it.

Speaking of myspace and the degeneration, I've actually been doing a little research in an effort to understand a world where I have always felt like a stranger in.

All this corn talk does dredge up another interesting story. As a kid we had a big dog and he loved to play with balloons. One particular birthday party we let him chase them and pop them. We never noticed that he also ate them. Well, I had backyard poopie-duty and as I was cleaning up the backyard, I would come across these brightly colored logs. At first I though the dog was sick but poking at one with the scooper I finally discovered why there was so little balloon residue after his balloon popping romp.

Why do you keep your goat on a leash?

although I REALIZE the 300 2.8 has a great deal to do with that...

The 300 2.8 is a killer lens! It even takes a 2x TC REALLY well!

CoreyPolis brought a rented one to the Seattle trip and it was very cool!

Ah...more twists and turns in the Paris plot...she is now a suicide risk...Hope none of you mind my handing her a knife.so-- didn't they put her back in last night? she's out again? or do they just have her on watch?

Wool, go ahead and let her put herself out of our misery. He plight is so much more newsworthy than starving kids, Darfur or any other such trival matter.

Other than family and the celeb hangers-on...I have serious doubts that she would be missed. Her mother says that her fate is now in God's hands...good grief. Talk about self-centered egotists!!!

I wish the media would ignore her - she is such an attention whore that she would die if nobody paid attention to her...

Remember when Anna Nicole Smith died? She had more media coverage than some presidents...

Yeah its unfortunate that celebrities get more run than either more important figures of the community or any other person who is NOT a celebrity.

Got to look at this differently. Think of how many photographers put food on their tables because of Paris’ antics. Why you wouldn’t want all those kids to go hungry, would you?

Just sad that some bimbo with no redeeming skills or qualities gets more air than a person that saves a life, finds a cure for a disease or something similarly important.

I for one am so sick and tired of hearing about Paris Hilton as the top story in the national news on my local station

There's an easy solution for that. Your remote control has a button on it (probably red), labeled "off". Press that button, and Paris will disappear. Unfortunately, it only works in your world. She'll still be out there, roaming the planet..

Goat story for you. We were installing cell equipment in rural China, very rural China, and the team stayed at a small hotel in a small town. Every morning when headed out there were animals in a small penned in area out front. When coming back at night the animals were gone. First two days were chickens but the third day was a goat. Well, goat was served for dinner that night and all soon figured out that when leaving in the morning, you were seeing the menu at night. One day there was a donkey in the pen and a few little pigs. One of the guys looked over and exclaimed “NO FRAKING WAY!!!” and one of the hotel workers overhearing this came up quickly and explained that we were having pig for dinner and the donkey was his and only there to keep him from running away.

My philosophy when traveling is never ask what I am eating. If others are eating it I assume it won’t kill me. But even plastic wrapped t-bone was walking around just a bit earlier.
