goatee, you got your own avatar back?

Yeah, much as I love the Chief's avatar, people a) thought I was weird, and b) nobody joined me streaking down at the quad (one person caught my Old School reference).

<sigh> so I'm back as the plain old 24-70 (which I love dearly :))

Any ideas for a new avatar for me? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3402393)

'Borrowing' the chief's avatar was a bit scary, frankly Tommy's more terrifying, and no, I don't know why. Anyway, I've finished my 'borrowing' phase, I want my own identity!

I just don't get why the IS is useful - can you fill me in? It's an outdoor lens, by its focal length, so how often outdoors, do you fail to get the required shutter speed, and even then, people would be moving, so it would only be useful for low light landscapes.

Simple. The longer focal length the more prone to handshake. If I had to choose which of 24-105 and 70-200 f/4 should have IS if only one could have it. It would be 70-200. With shorter focal length you can get away with longer shuttertimes before the handshake effects the sharpness.

2003: Less than 2 GB
2004: 35 GB
2005: 40 GB
2006: 43 GB
2007: 51 GB sofar. Hmm I guess I will hit 100 GB before end of 2007.

Gee, I hates when this happens. You open a few different threads in tabs and start reading. When you’re at the last tab, there has gone quite a few minutes. When you’re writing a reply to the last post, and forget to “quote”, suddenly there’s 10 other posts in between, and yours just looks weird.

The hillbillies would like you to think that NC-NC State might be on par with that. Or perhaps Auburn - Alabama over in Jamie's neighborhood. USC-UCLA, FL-FSU, VA-Virginia Tech, South Carolina-Clemson....good grief...everybody thinks their rivalry is the best!

Army-Navy. That was the big rivalry at our house growing up. If Navy lost, it was going to be a long and ugly month ahead....

The 350D is a superb camera - and you can buy them new still for peanuts. Really, if you don't need the build of the 20D/30D etc, it's superb. The 400D offers very little over the 350D - a bit more resolution, but then it's slightly noisier at high ISOs, so it all balances out.

We're on our way home this morning. Las Vegas is definitely a mixed bag of fun, sleaze, fond memories, and regrets. I usually end up taking a half-hour shower after I get home, and I really don't consider our departures from here anything short of escaping.

Lois absolutey loves the place, and I have a general dislike of it. We're here, so you know who wins those arguments.

I'm glad to hear that Yoda is getting along well with the Mk II. I'm looking forward to his duck shot with it when I get home. For now, I have to pack up the computer and start thinking about pointing the car down I-15.

Peace. Out.

It isn't even as simple or 'explainable' as that.. we've had real anomalies happen, the kind that even I am hard pressed to explain (even using the 'user error' approach), that just evaporate..

People tell ghost stories. I and my crew of eyewitnesses (three of us, with 30+ years of experience between us (at that time, now probably 45 years combined)) have seen scarier.

My favorite was when the Manager of Admitting called to report a problem with her printer. She said it was dead. Wouldn't turn on. No lights, or anything. The first thing we always ask in a situation like that is if they checked the cords to make sure everything was plugged in, and of course she replied "yes".

So, I went over there to look at it. Not only was it NOT plugged in, but the power cord was gone! I asked her where it was and she said "Oh! I thought that was an extension cord. I sent it to the Storeroom because I didn't think we needed it."

I have tons more stories like that...

This configuration: 430EX with Flipit bounce card, slow sync Av mode f/4 with 1/20 sec shutter speed, 2nd curtain flash, and I can still fire well over 5fps at full throttle in high speed drive mode. This is gonna be absolutely awesome for paparazzi style coverage at events - sometimes I really do need high speed drive.

Even more amazing is that the 430EX, with NO external battery pack (it cannot take a CP-E3 at all) can keep up for well over 20 frames. And that's bouncing it, which costs me even more light.

Divisional VP went postal, his secretary called one of my colleagues in a state of absolute panic because his printer wasn't working.

My colleague executed our standard troubleshooting procedure, re-fastened a loose cable and declared to the very impressed VP that the problem had been solved and all would be good from now onwards :p

I swear, half the challenge of being in computing is placating the users. I wear a spectrum of hats, not just one, but really, I think my year of psychology training is paying dividends that I cannot even yet begin to fathom.

When I wear my systems analyst hat, I give the "big dreams" interview to the client. "So, tell me about your hopes, dreams and fears of this system..." it sounds facetious and shrink-like, but really, the info they spill during the 'big dreams' interview allows me to manage expectations, devise countermeasures (against idiot clients), and work towards discovering WTF it is they REALLY want, as opposed to what they are saying. All I need is a nice couch and a cupboard of tranquilizers.. for them.

you wonder how these people get dressed in the morning. :)

We used to have IBM PS/2's throughout the hospital (those little all-in-one computer and monitor combo machines). When we finally phased them out and replaced them with real computers that had a separate monitor, for YEARS after that we would get calls from people who couldn't figure out how to turn their computer on. We couldn't get them used to the idea that they needed to turn their monitor AND computer on now... I used to wonder sometimes, when they got home did they have to call someone to talk them through how to turn the TV on.

My aunt called me up, she just bought her first computer (windows XP, etc) -- she asked how to shut it down.
I told her to move her mouse at the lower left-hand corner of the screen and click Start.

I wait a few seconds and here this "clink" - hmm.... she is like "It isn't working..." "are you clicking the start button?" "no, I can't see the start button anymore - the mouse is covering it" BANGS HEAD AGAINST DESK! --- she physically picked her mouse up, and placed it over the start button....

Well, it's your camera now, and you're already doing things with it that I never dreamed of. Congratulations, and thanks for a smooth transaction.

Thanks, it was a pleasure buying from you.. as I have said (and it bears repeating), I've dealt with literally hundreds of buyers and sellers over the Internet and you are the only one to rate a 12 on a scale of 1-10.

There is a classic tale out there about an idjit using a mouse as a foot pedal and the cd-drive tray as a cup holder.

Tell you guys a funnier story. We always mock the users, however, this time the shoe was on the other foot.

As an experienced admin/networker/whattheFyoucallit, I tend to deal with very much more senior staff. In fact, management tends to ask for me by name. Whether this is a good thing or not, you decide. (trust me, it's not always good). Senior people also tend to make a heck of a lot more noise when things are not going their way.

So well, one day, we had a problem with exceptionally slow file transfers and I was summoned in great haste. With great professionalism I inspected the computer, got them to perform the file transfer, and remarked that indeed it was slow - however went to great lengths to reassure them that it would receive my IMMEDIATE attention.

I wandered back into the datacenter pondering the problem and caught one of my staff playing Pinball on the server console.

Within 15 seconds, that dude was playing Pinball on the *BACKUP* (read: standby, and not in active use) server and the file transfer problem had been fixed. I never did disclose the real cause of the problem. Leadership is about protecting your staff too. At the end of the day, not throwing them to the wolves results in more loyal people who will stand by you in times of crisis.

This particular dude did help me out in the end, which tells me that I made the correct executive decision. And there's no moral dilemma here: I did report to the manager that his problem had been solved and steps had been taken to ensure it would not occur again.

We're not on any schedule today; the only time constraint is we have to pick the cat up at the kennel by 6:00pm, and that gives us a lot of discretionary time. We just finished a liesurely breakfast, and we're doing the last bit of packing right now. I expect to be calling for he car in about 10 minutes.

See you all later.

Tell you guys a funnier story.

That's a good one!

About 22 years ago when I started in this field, we had a couple Computer Operators on the night shift, back when we used to do (physical) report distribution instead of everything being online.

One day, they were sending instant messages to each other, back and forth, for a half hour or so. And of course, as people tend to do, they got crude and sometimes downright nasty. It was all in good fun. Only, they didn't realize that on that system, every message sent from one terminal to another was also instantly printed on the system's main line printer.

While they were doing this, they had the patient bills printing for that day's run, which they later delivered to the Business Office. Fortunately, someone in the Business Office noticed all of these nasty messages sprinkled here and there throughout the bills before they got mailed off to patients, insurance companies and government agencies...

Got a great mouse story. Couple of years back we had several interns. We wrote a little program that caused the mouse to jitter. It could be triggered from any other terminal. Well we convinced our intern that the optical mice would get dirty because of the dusty conditions of the lab and if he were to turn over the mouse and blow on the sensor it would clear up. Well he did and it did. We had him trained and for the following three months randomly throughout the day someone would trigger the mouse wiggler and he would blow on the mouse. At the end of the summer I called him into my office and told him I have good news and bad news. He stared with that intern-esque deer in headlights look as I old him the good news is that he was a wonderful intern and I am ready to extend an offer for full time employment after he finished his last quarter. He was elated and accepted right away, then I told him the bad news, that he had been scammed for the last few months and that there is nothing wrong with the mice. He didn’t quite believe me until I asked if he had ever seen anyone blow their mouse. To this day his nickname is Mouse. :)

No, it wasn't UNIX. It was a very odd system and I can't for the life of me remember what it was called now. All that's coming to mind is Motorola IV Phase. We did have a IV Phase at that time, but that wasn't the system that bit them...

Well as most here know I had a lot of tgrouble with my external harddisk(s). Thursday I got a LinkStation from Buffalo and so far it has been working great. There is only one downside and that is access speed over network. Even though I have gigabit net it is slow compared to an internal disk.

So I ordered an extra internal disk at 500 GB so I can put my photos on that and then the external dfisk will be a true backup and only on when required.

In addition to that I have 2 Western Digital Raptor 75 GB disks which are pretty fast. When I had the new disk in I started HD Tach to measure the speed of the new disk compared to the Raptor. (1 raptor is used for OS and the other will now be used only as scratch disk for PS)

The new disk (a seagate btw) is faster than the raptor and thats despite the fact that the raptor is a 10.000 rpm disk and the seagate is 7200 rpm's.

The Raptor burst rate was 125,5 MB/s and the avg speed was 64,8 MB/s.
The Seagate burst rate was 131,7 MB/s and the avg speed was 69,2 MB/s.

This is interesting because later this year I want to build a new pc and I was planning to put a couple 150 GB Raptor disks in it because of the speed. But if the newest 7200 rpm disks can match the speed then there is not need to choose the raptor disks as they are more expensive. Of course I have not tried the latest raptor disks. Those I have are 2 years old so the new 150 GB disks might be even faster. Hmm 2 150 GB raptors in a stripe array should be fast.

In 1997 when I started in my previous job we had a terminal system where we had a primitive message system that mainly was used by a few operators + a helpdesk in Tokyo, New York and Copenhagen (regular users could also use it when they had problems). We used it to send messages when there were problems on the mainframes. When everything else did not work this simple system almost always worked.

Well one evening we were 2 in the office in copenhagen. I was sitting with my back to the monitor and my colleague was sitting in the room next to. There was a dorrway between and the monitor was placed in that dorrway with the front towards where I was sitting.

Well then I heard the usual BEEP when someone sent a message. I turned around and just saw the screen turn off with no message on. How weird.

A few minutes later it happened again. What the heck was going on?? Then I looked at the monitor for a while but of course nothing happened.

I turn around and continue my work..... And of course it then happens again.

And my colleague could no longer keep his cool and started to ROFL. It turned out that it was him that recycled the monitor.

Another day I got a message on the same monitor asking for help. A user apparently could not logon to the system and could I please recycle his network node. Yes sure give it to me and I will do it right away.

BAM!!

and I was kicked of the system.............

Again it was one of my colleagues having fun at my expense.

Both of these jokes occured in the first couple of months while I was getting used to the systems and networks.

It sure was fun

I still have my first digital camera, too. (Casio QV-10) I also still have my first DSLR (10D). I haven't used the 10D in two years now, but eventually I want to have it converted to permanent IR, so I'll use it again.

Couldn't afford to keep my first proper digital camera (300D).

I still have my first digital camera too, Olympus C960Zoom. It's not woth me selling it - they're about 30 pounds on Ebay.

When my old employer first put computers in for general use, two or three people picked the mouse up, waved it around in the air and said 'why isn't the pointer moving?' Needless to say, they took a bit longer to train than some of the other users...

My favorite was...
I used to work Tech Support at the corporate offices of The Disney Store. We'd get calls from all over the world whenever there were problems in the stores. One of my very favorites was helping someone who called in to report the PC we used to clock in and out was dead. We run through the whole series of questions -- check the power light on the monitor, check the power light on the PC, check the power cables to make sure things were plugged in, which meant tracing the cables through a rats nest of cables that were usually found under the desks backstage at the stores. It was a slow process. When we got to checking to see if the UPS was working correctly the user stopped me and said they needed to go get a new flashlight. When I asked why, and I swear this is the truth, they said that all their power had been out for a couple of hours and the flashlight he was using to be able to see under the desk to check all the cables was dying. He just wanted me to wait a second so he could get a new flashlight so we could continue to troubleshoot why the PC didn't work.

Next favorite -- for months our stores in Spain were having problems accepting credit cards from a particular bank. Whenever one of the bank's cards were scanned through the registers, the whole credit approval system would crash, requiring a complete reset to start working again. The stores spoke almost no English, and I spoke little Spanish. The managers were impatient people to begin with, and we could never get them to collect complete information about the offending cards that would allow us to troubleshoot the problem. They would always call to complain, but never collect any information we could use to help. Being separated from us by the Atlantic only made the job more difficult. Finally one of the employees of the store called in -- they were a customer of the same bank and had just been issued a card that was causing the same problems. I learned from them, nearly three months after the whole mess started, that the card's expiration date was 03/2000. I had him check the expiration dates on all the cards causing the problem and, bingo, our first Y2K problem. We fixed it within a week after that.

I'd like to have back all the money I spent on early computers...I think I paid about 8 grand for my first PC-XT with the giant 10mb hard drive (that also included a crappy printer, monitor and a 300 baud modem that let me connect into the IBM BB). That replaced the PC that just had twin 5 1/4" floppy drives and no hard drive.

and they think Mac's are expensive NOW! I remember when owning a computer was akin to owning a Lexus....

Ahhh. Thats good. It was getting confusing. I was seeing belmondo everywhere....

I like your new avatar shot Tommy!

Any ideas for a new avatar for me?[/URL]

I'm going to work on this...hmmm...
(although it's definitely made me think: that's one question I'm never going to ask...ideas for a new avatar for myself  )

Ah, she's golden. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if she woke up a bit sore. The MkIII and the 300 f/4 is a hefty combo for her. That is one serious piece of equipment.

Yeah, I'm a bit sore...but I did have fun with that camera. I was really torn yesterday, wondering if I'd made a needless and super expensive upgrade. The IQ is really similar to the 5D but it's heavier (I knew that) but it's also TONS faster and that will be so usefull. I hope I will be able to use it to it's fullest (my head was just spinning with things to remember yesterday). I will be keeping my 30D though, just because the MKIII is so much heavier, I'd probably not use it when I'm playing tourist (around Seattle or something urban) for the day (though maybe when I get used to it I'll change my mind...funny thing was, last night I wanted to check the 30D and make sure it's profile was on srgb...just in case I'd accidentally changed it, and almost flung it over my shoulder, it was so much lighter than I was prepared for . Anyway, I did have a crisis, especially trying to figure out which way CF III 5 (I think) should be set so I could actually achieve focus  And because I was wondering if I went over the top $ wise....but (usually I do that after a big expenditure anyway). It's a fantastic camera though...Dan kept saying "wow! WOW! WOW!" And really, it is wow-able.

Speaking of which I put my 1.4x TC on the 100-400 and 1D2 of mine. It was a BLAST to shoot f/8 all the way and I did not need to tape any pins.

AF is still surprisingly quick.

I noticed that I had absolutely no issues with the 1.4 tc...none. In fact I thought I'd forgotten to attach it, af was so fast.

Seriously, we need to start talking about how great the 350D is, because I can't afford a 5D or 1D at the moment

My mum still has my xt. She gets great shots with it. The IQ is great on it & I think it's the best camera you can get for the $! Seriously, I'd pick it over the xti anyday (I don't like the iq of the xti...most of the shots I've seen seem really noisy)

Definitely. On Sunday, I used my 24-70 on a 5D, and I liked it, but missed the long end - the M3 would be a nice compromise, as it's a 1.3 crop.

I can't wait to test the MKIII on the wide side. I was really missing the 5D at the canyon when we went...I just couldn't get anything wide enough...

Make that a 1Ds with 16-35, 580EX, Stratos Flash Bracket and an off-camera cord. That is my real estate camera....I usually come home with one Popeye arm after a day of using that.

I can't believe you can hold all that! (meaning: I can believe it but I think it's amazing.) I saw Lonnie's flash bracket that he hauls around constantly and thought I could never do it...they are gigantic!

Are you really thinking of selling your Ds and getting another MKIIN? I would have thought the iq alone on the ds would make it worth keeping?

You just get used to it after a while...it really doesn't seem all that heavy...and it certainly is less that the mk2n with a 300 f/2.8 loaded up.

Actually I have considered getting rid of my 20D and 1Ds and adding a second mk2n. There is very little IQ difference between the two 1 Series bodies...but the speed difference is certainly there. And then there is the whole battery life thing...I use 3 batteries in the 1Ds for every 1 I use in the mk2n.

Boy I can understand that, re: the battery life. Hauling several of the larger batteries (I'm assuming the ds's batteries are a similar size as the 2N's) would be a bummer. Have you considered waiting until the price of the MKIII goes down and picking up one of those? The battery life is supposed to be longer and the batteries really are half the size of the other...I was so pleasantly surprised! I can see where that would be a deterrant to those that already have one series bodies. (which probably is the main focus group for this camera's sales). Different chemistries = different voltages and charging needs. Bad things can happen if you charge a li battery in something other than a charger designed for them. Also, there is no way to stack a li battery to get 12 volts. You can get 10.8 or 14.4 so it seems that the safest thing to do is change the shape so you can’t confuse them.

weren't you surprised Tommy? I know I was. Even having the 5D, I had to be careful when I used 3200, if I wanted a usable shot. (which I did achieve many times) but today, I didn't turn on the lights...I just had the curtains open (and there's a big tree that blocks out the majority of the light in the room...). I am SO surprised at the results (and how well the shots respond to NR).

Well, now that I've figured out how to register my AF point and toggle btw. the two settings, I'm going to get ready to go play with it again...

have a good day guys!

Yes I was. And my shots have not been run through noise reduction.

okay guys, I'm totally surprised...I thought the iso 6400 thing was hooey. Really. I never intended to use it at all (I rarely used the 3200 on the 5D even though it handled it very well with proper exposure). So just now, in my rather dark living room...I tested out the 3200 and the 6400. I took two photos of my black cat...and my red chair (always shows noise, ALWAYS) and my brown chairs...then I ran the photos through nik's dfine noise program. I can't believe the results.
MKIII w24-105 (and w/a polarizer since I forgot to remove it  )
6400

3200 excuse the bit of blur..my orange cat jumped on me when I took the shot...(since I wasn't planning on posting them, I didn't re-take)

Yes ISO 3200 & 6400 is amazing.

It's comforting to know that in the right hands, my camera is capable of such great images. I just have to figure out how to get a pair of those hands for myself.

BTW, I beat the UPS delivery home. I wasn't concerned about it, but actually thought he would have come yesterday. I didn't even think to check tracking while we were away. I logged on just now, and saw that it is 'Out for Delivery.' No notes on the door, so I expect I'll have it today.

Many people will have different ways. I'm more of the "Go To The Beach And Watch The Surf" purge kind of guy. Wool, however, is the "I'll Drink Labatts Beer From The Can" sort.

Morning everyone... off to work in a sec, and thought I'd have a quick catch up :)

We had a secretary break a CD in half so it would fit in the floppy slot.

That reminds me of this picture (http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/WinXP.jpg). I'm linking to it instead of embedding because it's 1) too big, 2) not mine.

That is very similar to what it looked like...I love what it says on the screen!

Heheh... I crack up every time I see that. We once had a secretary put 5.25 floppys through a typewriter :|.

We really don't have any beaches here. We have the Salton Sea, but you can't get within twenty miles of it without being bowled over by the stench.

I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I do have a can of Diet Rite Cola in the fridge.

Maybe I'll just go out on the patio and soak up some of this balmy 106-degree weather.

ROFL....I get such a kick out of people that seem to think that beer in a can is somehow evil or tastes different. I really like the guys that say they only drink draft beer because a "can" makes the beer taste funny...I wonder how they think the draft beer gets to them???

Thanks, wu. I had fun taking them...trying to become a bit more diversified.

Skip and I are talking about giving our 20D's to one daughter and one niece who both borrow them and love them. I want to purchase the new MarkIII but Skip is leaning towards the 30D.

I guess the battle of wills will continue until I win;)

okay, the mkiii is a really REALLY fun toy! At least I'm enjoying it immensely

We didn't go shoot today because I ended up having to buy a bag (one of my bags wouldn't close over the camera and the other wouldn't hold it with the 300 attached...) I hate buying bags. HATE it. It's a total inflated cost/what you get ratio! sigh. I love my billingham bag but I can't attach anything longer than the 24-105 in it...and the lowepro montery (also a nice sleek bag) is too streamline...the mkiii is too thick for it. Now I have a dorky looking (can we say camera nerd?) bag...sigh.

My Slingshot 200 barely holds a 70-200 f/4 mounted, I can't imagine I'll be able to cram the 100-400 mounted in there. To paraphrase the immortal words of Roseanne Roseannadanna, "Well, Lisa, it just goes to show you, it's always something! If it's not one thing, it's another!"

The kegs are not lined. They are aluminum inside and out...however, many of the new cans are lined...Coors added a liner to their cans...not for taste reasons, but to help keep the beer cold longer.
