So what's Puddle been saying?
Believe it or not, I'm actually innocent of this one. Someone's losing touch with their "Happy Place" in regards to the MkIII. If someone states that they do not have issue with the new camera, then, according to Not-So-Happy, they are ignorant of the facts. Pretty irritating, really.

Thanks! So when are we all going over? Except Riley... we don't want it to rain... Although! After a rainstorm it does look cool.
Marc Adamus (Corvallis, OR landscape photographer) took this photo http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5789521 after a storm --- looks REALLY cool!
Says he just used a CPL. Wow. Those clouds were pretty dark.

Khaled, IT IS ABSOLUTELY REAL! No manipulations of any kind here! My only adjustments were curves, a little dodge/burn, fine tuning the contrasts, and minor color adjustments. I made no color enhancment at all to the background hills! This is a National Monument in the state of Oregon. It is called the Painted Hills beacuse of the beautifully colored textures of the hills found here - truly like very few other places in the World. There are many, many other pictures that can be found from this place if you do some research, and they all showcase the same amazing color. The wet ground and direct sunlight against a stormy sky made the color on this day especially amazing.
Dodge/burn helped the clouds ;-)

Dodge/burn is something that you could do in a darkroom. I think he mentions somewhere on his smugmug site that he doesn't like doing things in photoshop that he couldn't do with film and a darkroom. Like, with film, if he wanted saturated colors, he would use Velvia - with his 5D, he uses Photoshop.

Ok, I have PPed shots from the game. I need to focus more when I am shooting these games. I feel like I am sucking it up. My timing is off and I don't shot as many of the infield stuff because I am daydreaming or talking with someone. UGH! Oh well, such is life.

in this thread it's too easy to fall behind. I catch up, go out for the afternoon and then bingo 3+ pages to read.
it makes me wonder some times if it's worth trying to
thomascanty
25th of June 2007 (Mon), 05:15
Three pages isn't too bad. I have my profile set to 25 posts per page and regularly get 10 or so pages behind. Doesn't take very long to catch up on that. Anything more than that and I'd consider skipping at least some of it.
goatee
25th of June 2007 (Mon), 05:19
During the week, I can normally stay on top of it - I don't mind reading 100 posts or so - more than that, and it just gets unwieldy, plus I'll want to respond to a post that's 100+ posts behind, which just annoys me, so I prefer to skip to the end, and that way I don't be annoyed :).

That is correct. He is currently tweaking the new server to top performance.

I don't think the site's popularity has anything to do with it. Pekka has stated numerous times that the forum actually uses very little of the server's resources. It would seem to me there's some other issue going on. Either a hardware or network problem at the hosting company's location. I do hope he can get it resolved before much longer.

I love my 85mm f/1.8 to bits - it is a truly awesome lens. The 50mm f/1.4 is also a good lens, but it's beaten on most fronts by the 85 :) (Yes, I owned a 50mm f/1.4, but I returned it, and shortly after got the 30mm f/1.4).

I agree that the 85 is better than the 50, but both are great lenses. If you really like primes, and don't have the moolah for L's, I like the 35 f/2, 50 f/1.4 and the 85 f/1.8. Those make up a great lineup. I've never shot with the 30 f/1.4 before.
goatee

If you have a crop body, try the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 at your peril :D. Fstopjojo also rates the Sigma as comparable to the 35mm L. . .
I think my main problem with the 50 was that it wasn't that much better than the 50mm f/1.8, build quality was only so-so, and the micro USM motor is a bit grindy. Optically, it is great, but I also prefer to have the larger gap between the 30mm and the 85mm. The 30mm for indoors, and the 85mm for portraits, or gigs etc.

You're right, it would :D. Sometimes it's good to use the 85mm as a walkaround - for one it forces you to be more creative with landscapes, and also, because of the wide aperture, it lets you really focus on smaller details, and throw the background into a creamy mush.

I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with the 85 f/1.8. My brother-in-law had bought it, and I got to try it out on their 400D, and later have a look at the pictures. Now I really understand why people are talking about a hidden L. And for the price, it seems like a steal.
It's an excellent lens and even better because of the price. When we use ours at the same time people are hard pressed to tell which is the 85L and the 85 1.8 (and his focuses faster than mine!) Really a good investment in your photography (imo). I remember when Ronaldjrsr said that the 85L had no advantage over the 1.8 and I thought  but really, while I love the L and since I own it I'm keeping it, it's heavier, and slower. For what I do, Ronald is right, the 1.8 would have suited me and the bokeh is (anywhere but tupperville, I'll be strung up for saying this) just as sweet!
Enjoy :D It's not my cup of tea, but I understand that many (women especially) like watching him perform :).
mine either...not at all
I was actually thinking that a 17-40 f/4 + 85mm f/1.8 could be a pretty nice traveling combo on a crop camera. Throwing in the 430EX maybe :)
This does sound like a nice combo. You may find that these (including your 70-200) are a very nice traveling package indeed.
In all honesty, he's not my cup of tea either (not a huge fan and don't find him attractive), but the concert has received very good reviews and it's a bit one of "the" concerts in Gothenburg this year (together with Rolling Stones in Aug). So I'm more going for the experience. :-)
Now, how do I smuggle a 300D and 80-200 f/2.8L into the concert?? ;-)
Do you have a LARGE purse? :)
3,000 Posts

Congratulations!!
Well, I was pootling along quite slowly for aaaaaages, and then this thread drew me in. . . I give myself another year to add another 3,000 unless I get out more!
LOL! Well we're glad to have you!
I know the feeling. It took me 3.5 years to make it to 5,000. Then along came TPBM and RRTP, and eight months later I doubled it...
And aren't you glad they DID come along? I'd rather be in one of these two places than anywhere on the forum :D

Well, I've tried the 85L in the store, and it's lovely, but very expensive. The 85 f/1.8 seems to be a very nice compromise, if one can even call it that. I really loved the bokeh of the f/1.8 and the AF seemed very fast. I know it will not be as fast on my 350D, but still.

I think you'll be very happy with it (on the xt too). Honestly, the L is very nice but it does have it's drawbacks. It's a perfect studio lens where speed is not a factor and it does shoot well at 1.2....but really, for real world work, I'd recommend the 1.8.

Oh, I just meant that I tried the f/1.8 on a 400D which has a more advanced AF system than my 350D, and can benefit from the larger aperture. But I'm sure it will be fast enough on the 350D as well ;)

My Tamrac 5577 is really nice (Lisa, how do you like yours? I think it is pretty comfortable for the size/weight), but it is really big for small hikes and walks. I think I want a bag or sling so that I can wear my CamelBack water system. I would like something in the sub-$100 range...
