Sorry.. nothing shorter available. Macros tend to start at 50 and get longer, such as the 60, 90, 100, 105, 150, 180 lengths.
okay.. you learn something new everyday.. how are you doing?..

Pretty good thanks :) the fires are all out here, finally, and I can take it easy. Sorry to hear you won't be making it home for Christmas. Make sure she 'makes it up to you' by giving you extra time off during another day. At LEAST that much.
The compositional rules change once you get into macro territory, at least I find focal length is really not much of an issue. I can change my composition by moving backwards and forwards, since the distances are so small. Zooms for mountains, macro primes for tiny subjects that can sit on a tabletop or smaller.
In macro lenses, focal length tends to determine working distance (WD) rather than anything else. WD is the physical amount of room from the front of the lens to the subject. Naturally, if you are taking pictures of something with a bad@ss sting or the ability to inflict some pain, you want a LONG telemacro to do the job so you can keep your distance ;)

You don't want shorter for a macro....in fact...the 50 macro is too short. If you really want macro...go for the Canon 100.

1350g. Lots of useless info stored in memory! :D
I tend to study the products that I'm interested in, the skillset is useful at work when I need to know my product lines and what products can be pulled together to craft what kinds of solutions to pesky problems. As for camera lenses, it's just way too much interest and too much gear shopping ;) I'm a bit more familiar with stuff I actually use or used though.
I have actually bought and sold (not all sold though) literally TWENTY of the darn lenses in my time..... I just counted yesterday..

I dunno. You're from the Ol' South, so it might not bother you so much, but the humidity of FL kills me. I was stationed there for a few months back in the 80's, and I could never get over that sticky heat. Being in the 'Glades with the sun on my head would've done me in. I'll take the temperate NW over the tropics any day.

I'm a Yankee in hillbilly clothing....humid is not fun for me...but it wasn't all that hot...and since I left snow to come here...that makes it even more tolerable. I can do a few days here every now and then...especially since I am going to NY to spend Christmas with my kids.

oh do I hear you loud and clear!! I always thought of snow as being gentle, still and romantic.. I move up here.. buy a pair of snowboots and I still have this great attitude about it.. I figure, i'll get used to the cold buy myself some gloves and a scarf get to take lots of pretty pictures and generally have a quaint sweet little winter.. Guess what?.. it's wet and cold really cold. cold enough that you really can't go out in it.. I would be happy if it stayed around 30 degrees but negative temperatures and you're stuck inside.. It's not gentle it's dangerous.. My friends and I at work are keeping track of the upturned vehicles we drive past.. (about 15 so far).. and then ofcourse there's the matter of my dang car being completely stuck... Seriously four big men trying to get it out of the parking spot and they can't get it to budge... My buddy has promised to get a shovel and dig me out in the morning but jeez... I suppose that would be funny except I wanted to go home tonight... okay, another picture.. it's a great spot to be at.. it really is incredible looking...

I need to clear up some misconceptions...First...not all NYers are from NY City...and assuredly not from Brooklyn. I lived in upstate NY...my grandparents owned a 600+ acre dairy farm and the closest big shopping mall was over 90 minutes away...Syracuse is the nearest major city. I hate cold...I hate humid...and Ronnie Sr. Jr. grew up about 20 miles from me. Here is a shot of the conditions here today...

we all sound different to eachother.. sometimes you can tell by state.. for example Kentucky or New York is very obvious.. I however don't have much of an accent.. Up this way we have some extra hard consonants and we like to drop off the end of our words.. Working turns to workin'.. But my least favorite is the Minnesota area... the fargo accents literally makes me cringe to hear them..

Ehh.. this 85 1.2L is absolutely phenomenal. Indoors under CRAPPY flourescent lighting that I have never been able to get good shutter speeds in, suddenly I am getting 1/1250 wide open on that lens.. unbelievable.
The price is absolutely phenomenal as well. For many of Canon's finest, they have gotten to the point where I don't question their optical performance - they WILL assuredly deliver. But I do question how much I would use it and whether it would be worth buying. For those who DO use it.. congratulations, it is one of those tools that is so superlative till it defies the imagination. For me... can't justify it. Not by any means of the imagination. Maybe if I win the lottery. Maybe. (I don't even play it :p)
I might buy the 85/1.8 and be content with that as my low-light events lens.

didn't try.. I fell putting my bags in my car this morning. my knee is banged up pretty good. My buddy Jason helped me back into my house and said he would get a shovel I told him that It's a sign that I should sit still. There are just too many things going wrong.. so, i'm sitting here with an icepack on my leg watching t.v. for the day.. later i'll go take some pictures and i'll go home on Tuesday night instead.

I am done with all my Christmas and birthday shopping (yes, my mom and son have b-days on the 23rd and 29th) and I am only working 2 shifts a week next week and the week after. Yahoo!

I am glad I don't have to do any christmas shopping. In my family we dropped giving christmas presents many years ago (no children in the family). It is so nice to be able to go through december without having to worry about this. Sometimes we play a little game where we buy 2 small presents max value $5. First all presents are put in a pile on the table. Then we start a game were we throw a dice. When we get a "6" we can take a present from the table. When there are no more presents on the table we can take from each other. We continue this for a set time. When the time runs out each get to keep the presents they got. It is really funny and usually we all end up with 2 presents when the time runs out.

My flickr pro account is expiring on the 25th. Time to think of a new way to deal with this stuff. I have two domain names but no longer have a server. Could host my own gallery though, reup on flickr (not leaning that way at all) or do smugmug ( I hate that name!)
Advice?
Where could you host your own gallery? I think Yoda does that and is very happy with his.
I hate the smugmug name as well but am so pleased with the service. I had a problem when I was setting it up and they got back to me in less than an hour with all the info I needed. I like the interface a lot...plus I like the option of the pro account if I ever want to upgrade.
Flickr never had the options that I wanted...I started there but didn't stay.
