They all wear them - Swiss cows have style. ;)

No - not really. We are getting rid of our house here and I've been focused on that. It's going to be SO much work. :(

I should have known it was a Swiss cow...they all seem to get nice bells...Pretty rare to see bells on the cows here.

You are selling your place in the States or the one in Thailand?

I've decided to not worry about my camera...it behaved SO well today (and it was solely a birding day)

the bushes were waving in front of this guy and it nailed the focus

here, it very very slightly missed but the wind was waving ALL those leaves, so I'm wondering if any camera could have made it through there

Those look good Permie...I honestly wonder about the pixel peeping going on with the camera...there is a lot of new technology that has come into play with it...just wonder if there isn't a bit of a learning curve involved. Next they will have Ken Rockwell validating focus issues with it!

You know Wool, it's probably the most complicated camera I've ever used. When I had the 2n, the dials/buttons combinations for everything frustrated me a great deal and I felt like it was complicated. This one removes all that...but it reminds me of film days in a way. For different situations (even closely following one another) different AF settings need to happen. (I used my AF search OFF most of the day, with great success, but sometimes I had to turn it ON, which I don't like at all because it hunts through the whole range of the lens, slowing AF down, or MF it to the area I wanted...if I kept AF search off.) There's just a lot of things that are left up to the photographer to adjust...like I said, it just reminds me of the old slr's in that way. You have TOTAL control. But if someone doesn't want that, I can see where it would frustrate them. With birding on the 2n, you could set your settings and be done with it except maybe exposure comp or iso. Not with this one, not at all. But it's getting easier, as I remember what to do.

oh and I think that highlight thing worked well today...I can't see any CA and the conditions were the same as always, these aren't crops but I did adjust exposure...

Wow. What pure coincidence...

Today is Lois' actualy birthday (the casino sign has been congratulating her for the last couple days).

Happy Birthday Alyssa.

I think part of this problem goes back to some ritual form of hero worship. There are a whole bunch of people that have decided that if Rob Galbraith says there are issues with the camera, then by default every copy must be defective. I only played with the Mk3 for about 45 minutes to an hour the other day...but the first thing I noticed about it was it isn't just a souped up Mk2n...there are distinct differences...I suspect it is going to take me some time to learn the ins, the outs and all the secret little quirks....provided I even decide I want to go that route. Hell...I think I still learn little things with the Mk2n every time I shoot.

MOOOOO!!! Everyone!

We just got back from a drive on the beach with the convertible top down. Took a dip in the Gulf. I just can't wrap my mind around this whole thing. It's 9:30 at night. 85 degrees and the water was bathwater warm! It boggles my little Pacific Ocean-mind.

And I really need some technical help from Puddle. I think there is something drastically wrong here. The sun doesn't set over the water. What's up with that??

evening everyone!

Heyguesswhat? The MKIII STILL AF's with the 400mm+2xtc+1.4xtc

Very cool!

I don't know yet...I just got home. I had it mounted on a tripod to shoot a green heron (MY FIRST EVER!) but the dumb thing was SO FAR AWAY...so first I put both tc's on the 300 but it wasn't far enough and then I put them both on the 400 and had Dan MF it for me and it was just by accident that I found out it AF'd too but every time I pushed the shutter button (remote shutter) it still bounced everything on the tripod...

anyway...

We had a nice day birding...got some lovely (I hope) shots of the cedar waxwings and kildeer and some osprey shots but who knows how they turned out. As far as the green heron goes, I'm NOT counting on those shots to turn out...

now off to catch up

Were you at WF?

Nice Fleurs, Scott and Wu :)

I really like this shot...if this was with the 24-105, then all those people who say it has lousy bokeh, obviously don't know how to use it!

this one is my favorite of the bug shots!

That's actually the 30D and the 100-400 (Did I mis-state it earlier?). I'll post one from the 24-105 in a bit.

For some reason the AF missed the target on this one and caught the safety screen above the dugout. I was wandering around shooting from different spots in the park to see some different vantage points. I just liked how it turned out.

Wool, I LOVE this shot!! Very beautiful. I've had the same thing happen, but have never ended up with something this fantastic.

It's a rental. My car is in the shop getting a new rear bumper and driver's seat because of that accident I was in back in May. The insurance company authorized me for a mid-sized rental car, but Hertz didn't have one available when I was there, so they gave me a free upgrade to a Jeep Liberty 4x4, just like Puddles'.

Ahh, got it. Cool.

okay Scott, here's a straight from the camera (no adjustments) shot with the MKIII, 400f5.6, 1.4 & 2x tc's on a tripod.

and TD (or anyone who knows) can you ID the bird with the orange bill (I don't have a better photo, it's from a crop of the above shot)? It wasn't a green heron and it sort of looks like a cormorant but not the one in my bird book...so, sigh. I can't add the green heron to my lifebook thingy but I could add this if I knew what it was.
http://LC-images.smugmug.com/photos/168549956-L.jpg

and Wool, all the info is showing up as 560mm at f10...weird.

I concur on the juvie double crested cormorant ID. Is this the "Green Heron" shot?

TD - nice lizzie. I got to see it in Permie's quote.

Thanks Athena!

Perm, I'm so glad to hear this. I really have wondered if there aren't a combination of things going on. Primarily, I wonder if the settings just aren't being adjusted properly. This camera is so complex. There certainly could be problems, but I know that "overthinking" a problem can certainly compound it.

By the way, this shot of the CWWOB is stunning! You really need to enter this into Salem Audubon's calendar contest. And as a side note, I'm guessing this shot may do more to endear you to the TF than anything you've done to date!

THANK YOU!!! I've been saying this ever since the MkIII came out. It's not another Mk2n. It's a completely different animal. You can't just assume that the things, parameters, hard/software will be identical on the Mk3 just because it's got the same shape! It's all new. There IS a learning curve.... you have to learn the camera all over again. It's not like the shift from the Mk2 to the Mk2n, wherein the changes were slight. It's a massive change. People keep saying, "There's something all wrong... it won't work like my Mk2n" Correct! It won't! Because it's not a Mk2n!!!

I'm sure that someone is going to read my comment and instantly label me a kook because I dare to think that it possible for a well known figure to not have a good grasp of the operations of the camera. I think if you go in understanding the camera is totally different and you take the time to learn it...that it is and will be a fantastic camera for you, but if you go in thinking you know all there is to know about the operation of the camera, it is going to bite you in the @$$.

Yes, that's a syringe.

But all that brown gunk from the previous shot was weird seaweed. Other areas were quite clean. Did I mention that you can drive and park on the beach. You need a parking permit, but you can drive everywhere. On the map it shows as this pristine National Marine area. Umm, no. Not so much.

Kind of neat to see such a simple carrier...the island free of all the modern technology.;) Of course, there is an Intruder parked on the flight deck....not sure that baby could support Intruder ops. Also looks to be an S3 Viking on the fantail...not sure that would have ever been able to operate from the Lex either. Guess they just have Navy aircraft aboard and are not era specific.

Hi all -- hope TD survives the Tejas beaches. Having spent a significant amount of time in Galveston, I can attest to the the "unusual" materials that tend to wash up on the Gulf Coast. :p

Purty boid shots, Cap'n. (And I loved the TR sidetrip to Starbucks back a couple days  ). Wandered around the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge for a while on Saturday, but my most interesting shots were of frogs and a robin. Not very exciting :( , but it was a nice walk.

Went motorsport shooting for the first time today. There was a historics meet at a track about half an hour from here. I think I took somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 shots -- 450 made it past chimping onto the laptop -- and 400 passed the test of being in reasonable focus and including a recognizeable portion of a car. :D Loved the 100-400 -- though it was heavy enough to make me think about a monopod. Might make it easier to work on my panning that way, too.

For those interested in seeing what a non-motorsport photographer does when he shoots motorsport, see my thread in the Motorsport forum (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=342816).

It can get busy at times, if there's a problem. Mostly it's just boring and very routine. As for moving somewhere else in the same field... Everything I do here I've learned on the job over the past 23 years. I don't have any certifications, which another company would want. So, I'd have to spend the time and money necessary to be tested and certified. That's a hassle I really don't need, and anyway, after 23 years in the field I'm sick of it. I really do need something different.

Some people have nothing better to do than complain about things. You live by a farm - DEAL WITH IT!.

When we moved to our current location, we knew we would hear tractors everyday - that is no issue. But sounds like this person would file a complaint. (we are surrounded on three sides by a tree nursery.)

Sky is News Corp's Satellite TV offering in the UK. Sky+ is a HD based PVR, with twin tuners, so you can either record two programmes simultaneously, or pause live TV, etc. It's a really well thought out product, and I don't know anyone who has got it, who has then reverted to life without it. It'll do series stacking (hit a button to record every episode in the series you're interested in), and is just generally a really nice product.

I couldn't watch the video (don't have the plug in on my mac) but people are crazy. When we moved in to our house 2yrs ago, we saw no sign of the railroad. Retiring from the military is really beneficial if you can stick it out. My husband could have retired 2 years ago if he'd stayed in...we always think about that, as he's slogging off to work at 4am...and think about how hospital stays cost us $25 and now even with "insurance" they are astronomical...and how medical and dental was so much cheaper...yeah...hindsight and all. I think that's why my father stayed in even though he was tired of it. I really like my job but it's becoming more administative which i don't like. I know what you mean about wanting to stay in, i already know a few like that that have gotten out and thought the civilian lifestyle would be far different. I think it's just the sudden change to do what your told and do what you want. :) I have a few pictures of Guam already... i can post one here and maybe you can all tell me what you think?

Very pretty shots and a very pretty area. The second one may be a bit dark but not too much. I can see the details just fine on my monitor. It's a lovely place. Do you hike much around those hills or does the humidity prevent much exertion?

Edit*

i actually love hiking.. but a lot of this is private property. There are a few trails but a good bit of what's nice to see is built for tourists. A lot of beautiful waterfalls, but they're ruined by concrete walkways and you have to pay to get to 'em. Tourism and Military are the highest source of economy for the island so goes without saying...

And thank you very much for the wonderful compliments. :D

Just got off the phone with Jon....I think he is having POTN withdrawal...he got on for a moment yesterday, but has no real good signal for his cell phone and has to go several miles to an internet cafe to be able to log on...The mountains here are far more remote than people suspect.

I had to chuckle at the thread that was floating around last week with some guy complaining that he wanted to post bigger pictures because the current limits did injustice to his wonderful work. He even got a little redneck with Pekka. I think he was about one word from finding out how the smite button works...because he sure didn't want to listen to reason. People that come from tiny little countries can't seem to understand just how big the US really is...and that not every house has another house 2 feet away.

Anyway...Jon says "Hi"....we are supposed to go to Roan Mountain on the NC/TN border to shoot some flahrs and scenics tomorrow mooooooooooooorning.

I must have missed that thread...I have been reading lots of different things too but I didn't see it. Though if there was a complaint in the title, I probably would have skipped it completely

I like Newberg a lot. The vineyards are very pretty. Since I am driving from Boring to Newberg for my classes (don't ask why) I plan to spend a lot of time down there while waiting between classes. So I expect a lot of time for photography :-D

Same here. Right now I am redoing a gallery from last year. When that is done I need to start getting my carnival photos up from this year, last year and the year before that and...... That will be a big task. I only got 3200+ photos from the carnival over years.

that's funny...I'm not sure what threads are being drama at the moment...but, I was just thinking that I just love (read that: HATE) being made irrelevant in a post. Usually one of those trauma type threads where everyone is upset and you post some options but because I don't make $100K a year at shooting, then my information is pushed to the side as less than worthless... I don't know why I bother to try to be helpful sometimes.

I know what you mean...I have (she says most shamefaced) :o about 10K photos to edit and either toss or get up in the gallery (I have a lot of private galleries so that I can rotate the photos in and out of the public ones...so the public ones don't get boring) and I just think the task is overwhelming so I put it off...and it just grows worse and worse...

My favorite is i'm from the US so i don't know diddly squat... but yes, they make for good times when someone gets so angry over something to small, at a stranger, over millions of miles away, on the internet, and in an inpersonal setting. makes my day.

Gads! I know just what you mean. I had 18+ solid years exerperience doing IT/IS stuff including my stint in network, as a consultant and then as a Functional Analyst among it. I have an advanced degree and all that but the state jobs I applied for (so I wuoldn't have to pay for testing- they take care of the cost) wouldn't even let me test since I didn't have an associates degree in a computing field. I was majorly PO-ed!!

I don't have the money, time or desire to get my certifications. plus I am a bit out of date aftert the last 4 years of academic stuff.

I have an impressive resume and Vita but not enough ed for some jobs I'm qualified for and too much ed for others and I don't want to be on tenure track in academia. JOb hunting has been a real pain.

I miss that about Dish tv. Plus I could program the tvs to change channels for me. I loathe changing channels myself so I just watch the Science network now that I just have digital cable. . . unless I have company- they I hand them the remote. It's nice to have someone flip for me. :)

I work in the Information Systems area for a large hospital in the Los Angeles area (actually, we run the computers for a few hospitals). My title is Senior Operations Tech, but the job also involves some network support and clinical analyst duties, too. Basically, from midnight until 9:30am, we're the only people here, so we're responsible for everything that goes on. During the day shift, there's a whole crew of Network Techs and Clinical Analysts, so there's less for the day shift Operators to handle.

Hey Lonnie, I work in IS for a hospital supplier that has several large customers in the LA area. No red birds here, though... ;) It'd be serendipitous if you worked at one of our accounts...

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I don't even have a degree at all, so I'm even deeper in the hole. I did graduate from Computer Learning Center in Los Angeles back in 1985, but it wasn't an accredited college, so I only got a certificate, not a degree. And, while that certificate got me the job I have now, it's worthless these days. They taught us how to run and maintain mainframes there. These days, mainframes are extremely rare, and those few companies that still do have them have thousands of us old fogeys to choose from for every job opening they have available. I wish I could go back in time about 25 years and choose an entirely different career.

If I were the type of person who actually wanted to get married, you'd be behind me in line... ;)

I work at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. We also have Holy Cross in Mission Hills, Little Company of Mary in Torrence and Saint Elizabeth's in wherever the heck that is on our network.

We, in turn, are owned by the Sisters of Providence, based in Washington, so we're part of their system of I have no idea how many hospitals throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Don't you wish 25 years of OJT was worth something. I won't get into it too much but in my line of work I have "higher management" that hasn't been in meteorology for a few months besides what they learned in college telling me what to do even though i've been doing it for nearly a decade... i just had to get that off me chest, heck it's all just educated guesses anyway right? darn that mother nature.
