You take a sharp knife and make a series of slits in the fresh ham or pork roast....press a slice of garlic into each slit. Next you rub the outside with some high quality extra virgin olive oil and then with a mixture of coarse salt, fresh ground pepper and granulated garlic. Place it on a wire rack in a baking pan...350 degrees until the meat thermometer shows 150...in the very center. Remove from oven and let rest for at least 20 minutes before carving.
Garlic and fresh rosemary (or other fresh herb of choice, perhaps) in the slits is yummy. Middle son's favorite. Lots of garlic, touch of rosemary.
Now I'm hungry too. Probably should pull something substantial out of the freezer for supper tonight. Maybe then I can wake up after naps and read this thread and not have my tummy growl.
How about a tastey venison recipe, wool?

Actually, I love eating. Better if it can be outsourced I definitely agree :D now with all the good food at home.. I need not worry.
BTW, you were saying something about hosting earlier? If you need a space to park stuff for a while I have enough to share, let me know.
I am currently with a 'web hosting' provider that I am not entirely happy with.. I have always been happiest running my own servers. (once a sysadmin, always a sysadmin). May be changing providers in the months to come once this contract runs out.

Things are a bit better, I have most of the major problems squared away and now everything in my in tray has 'administrative' severity, at most (as opposed to critical). Thank God.

Cool.. anyway just let me know if you need a place to park stuff whether short term or long term (long referring to the time when I get away from my hosting provider :p). I can easily create a Gallery account.
Autopilot - dish that can be prepared with absolute minimum of work. Example would be the chicken recipe I mentioned earlier, marinade 24 hours, slam in oven with potato of some kind, and go back to work. Resurface 30 minutes later, chicken is cooked, potato is baked.. 5 min to prepare marinade the day before, 2 min to load oven. Rest is all waiting time (autopilot) while the oven does its thing.
Ham would probably be something like that although preparation is more intensive.
Glad to hear things are some better!

I do a lot of chicken breasts and salmon in the oven, so I guess that is autopilot. Steam some veggies, roast a little red potato or 3. Maybe some rice if I satrt early enough. Just so much easier to nuke a mini pizza or eat a peanut butter sandwich. My diet consists of veggies and some variation on a cheese sandwich a lot of nights, though, A tortilla, or artisan bread topped with cheese and thrown under the broiler. Not healthy, in particular. But quick and no left overs.
Yes. I have to be at the office today. Brought work home tonight and have been working in spurts between naps. well- only one nap so far. Not sure if I will get another. Only an hour and a half before I normally get up and head to the office.
If I that it gets out on today's truck I am coming home, though!

You'll have to share it some day. I grill all year long. Nothing better than building a snowman to act as a wine cooler, brushing the snow off the grill firing up some charcoal and grilling i the chill. I do generally come back in for the beer part. too cold to stand out there for long. :)

Got an Imac. Just the 17 incher :( but 2.16 gh, 2gb ram. I figure I'll add a second display in a month or so.
It'll be a bit slow rendering video, but it is all I could swing right now and this old dell laptop is about to die and there will be no heat on campus over break. No working in the office. IF I'd not bought the tubes and nifty, I'd have been able to get the 20 inch, but still would be the same guts. I've been wanting tubes again for a long time.

I am Annoyed(tm).
I just got back from wandering around town and looking at all the beautiful Christmas lights, realizing that my 28/1.8 is stuck in a Computrekker AW stashed halfway around the world. Bloody #@($*@!@!! Guess I am going to have to push the 24-105 f/4L IS and push the stabilizer to do the job. Luckily, lights do not run away from me. I sure could use the bloody fast aperture though.
I hate being posted overseas... (it is *NOT* the same as moving from one state to another, where everything else works the same way.. international borders are whole different game and the rules are different). Try fighting with airline carry on regulations and lost baggage.. it's a risk I take every time I fly. Try explaining the million and one things to border control. Those of you without passports: YOU ARE LUCKY. (but don't ever tell me it's easy.)
Think I will buy myself a 85/1.8 and have another drink :( yes, retail therapy is running OVERDRIVE now.

Well - do it once in a lifetime, go on the adventure, see the world, find yourself (now I know what they mean), come back and be happy. Going as a tourist is also very different from being stationed there. The little problems suddenly become amplified by a few orders of magnitude.
And when your time overseas approaches 5+ years, you get Real Tired Real Fast. Work has taken me too far from home too often. All I can say is.. this had better dang well be worth it.
Plus, the loss rate of international shipments during Christmas is staggering.. as someone who used to be a reseller, I know.. it was always a headache. Either that, or they would take up to 2 months. USE FEDEX!!!
I think I will be OK.. for static subjects like Christmas lights, the 24-105's stabilizer gives me at least two additional stops to put it on parity with a f/2, if not 3 stops (1.4). I hate the way people carp and carp and carp about IS 'not being able to freeze action' as if that is the only thing that they ever care about, or 'it's useless on a short lens'. I have so many prize shots that would not have been possible without IS. I'm a landscape and cityscape photog - it matters to me. Try to rig a tripod on the busiest pedestrian mall of a city of 4 million people (with 3 million in the city, other 1m in hiding) during Christmas is asking for it. For those who do not understand the True Nature of IS.. forever be confounded by it, they will!!
Sorry for the rant... anyway I figure that since I seem to believe so much in IS, it's time to put that faith to the test. I believe too, that I will not be disappointed.

Never again will I trust anything but EMS and FedEx. When it absolutely, POSITIVELY, HAS TO BE THERE, FedEx gets it to me.
I have had a FedEx driver front up at my place at 4PM on a Sunday in the pounding rain (so loud you have to shout above it) with a consignment of Plextor 8/20X CD-R drives. That's the idea. There is a 135/2 for $761 TCO hanging around, secondhand, but I am loath to spend money on a lens that will simply sit around unused most of the time. $340 on a 85/1.8 is better, and I will ask 'em to price match B&H.

I am dating myself - this was so many years ago that the Plextors were not capable of writing to rewriteable disks, hence CD-R, not CD-RW.FedEx is currently on my list (not the good one). I paid for 2nd-day air on the 50L, and it was right on schedule all the way to Palm Springs. On the appointed day, tracking info. said it was 'out for delivery'. I waited around all day. By 11:00pm, I gave up hope of seeing the lens and started thinking about going to bed. I decided to watch the 11:00 news, and as soon as I sat down, I heard a truck outside. I walked out onto the porch, and saw the tail lights of a FedEx truck pulling away. There was no package, but a door tag instead showing 'attempted delivery at 11:00pm'. The bozo hadn't even rung the doorbell.
Day 2 (Friday): I called FedEx in the morning, and grumbled about the previous days' events. The nice lady assured me the package was on the truck and they would 'attempt' delivery again that day. This was almost a carbon copy of the day before. The driver came a little after 11:00pm, didn't ring the doorbell, left a door tag, and escaped once again with my lens. I was still up.
Day 3. Saturday morning, I called FedEx at 6:00am, and I was steamed. I told them I wanted the package held at their terminal in Palm Springs so I could pick it up during the day. Unfortunately, the person I spoke to was in the Philippines, and wasn't able to call them directly because the local office didn't open till 9:00am on Saturday. I called back at 9:00, and was told that the package was already on the truck and out for delivery.
Grrrrrr.
The driver made his ‘third attempt’ to deliver it around 5:00 Saturday afternoon. Fortunately, we were home, although we hadn’t been earlier. For some reason, B&H shipped the lens with the requirement that someone at the address be there to sign for it. Otherwise, I would have signed the door tag from the preceding day, and have it left on the porch. I’ve done that before with considerably more valuable items, and would’ve been very comfortable doing so.
On the other hand, it could be worse. DHL lost my brother-in-law’s passport two days before he was supposed to leave for Brazil. Classy outfit.

Also, I came to a realization walking around the shopping malls today. While I seem to be buying glass left right and center there is honestly not much else that I buy. I can walk through an entire shopping belt of multiple megamalls AND find nothing that intrigues me. I watch people throw down hundreds of dollars at one go on everything ranging from designer clothes to bags to skincare products, and realize that yes.. by and large, my spending is fairly restrained compared to most of what I'm seeing out there. Glass and drink are really my only two vices. And I've been drinking A LOT LESS since I got home.. must be the improved morale. (no it's not anybody stopping me)

I buy c.d.s and books used because I don't like the new stuff very much anyway.. While I generally agree with your sentiment, I have to tell you that I ran across a recipe for a whole chicken, cooked in a cooking bag, with fresh rosemary stuffed inside, salt and pepper. Then a few minutes in the microwave (10 or 17, I can't remember).
I've done this a few times. It's extremely moist and tasty.
So, don't knock it until you've tried it!

I hate it when they do that...it's like they've got their door stickers ready...don't even bother to deliver...DHL is the worst for us...they deliver to the neighbors even when you are standing on your front porch saying..."OVER HERE"!
Like I said, the 85 is a good lens. I'd own it if I didn't already have access to it. I was going to purchase the 1.2L but honestly got such good results with my husband's 1.8 that I just asked if I could borrow it when I needed that range. Of course he was happy to acquiesce since it saved him roughly $2k
Sounds cool. I can't justify the 85/1.2 even though the shots are absolutely magnificent. I KNOW it is fantastic.. as I said, I no longer even bother to test-fire certain Canon lenses because I know their optical performance is beyond reproach; it simply becomes an issue of price.
Fully agreed with Sari I could plow $20K into gear and not look back. Don't look now but I have a sneaking feeling I have already done this.

Don't worry about it.. those of us who do read (or skim at least) all the posts will page you if anything comes up. The job of reading everything we type seems fairly unenviable, but the pleasant part about this thread is that it seems to be peaceful enough.. we may not agree about everything (microwaving chicken ) but there are no hard feelings.. :p
Edit: Still haven't hit the $20K mark. Far from it, thanks to 'gear recycling'. Maybe if I add the Eye of Sauron (200/1.8 )

Nahhh.....several lenses have a comparable capability, but they are much cheaper and much lighter (300 f/4 IS is one of them, 200 f/2.8, 180L, 135L...even 400 f.5.6 and 100-400). Please let not common hype and folklore sway you.

Wish you lived closer. I love to run. And I can run a mile without even breakin' a sweat. :)
Glad to hear you got a new 'puter. I'd love to have a Mac.
Before you leave and start reading other threads, I plan to acquire a 85/1.8 prior to my return to the firing line.. it's small consolation for the $#)(*@! I have to put up with when I get back. Just thought I'd report to the High Priestess before exercising my TMS therapy.
I have the 85 and love it. Like most of my lenses, it's cheap but has great IQ.
well if I had to choose btw. the two, I'd choose the 135...because I love that lens. I don't use it as much as my zooms but the keeper ratio is at 99.9%...it's absolutely fantastic on the 5D.
I have the 135 in the f/2.8 version. Great IQ for outdoor portraits. I'd like to have the 135L for gym sports.
I dunno, really. Cost is a concern.
(no it's not anybody stopping me)
Not me. I love to shop!!! But I'm a resale and bargain shopper. I got a Coach handbag on Saturday for $7.99. Woo hoo!! :D

Hey Perm, glad you're back.
I was afraid there was an "incident" at Starbucks last night.

I didn't get to go to Starbucks last night! (But I'm holding one as I type....yummmm)
Our internet went down...dsl server said (for 14 hrs) "we don't know what wrong...we've just got a large dsl outage..." "uh, YEAH!"
btw...Chicken does not brown (even in a bag) in the microwave and again I say BLEAH!

Oh sure Peter...push the buttons...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
300mm f/2.8L IS or Christmas with the family...
decisions, decisions.....DECISIONS! I hate making decisions...great pictures and my kids never speak to me again or someday great pictures but at least family is still on some kind of terms....
Will a simple coin toss suffice?
OF COURSE NOT! Such mission critical decisions about lens purchasing vs family relations must be left to the RRTP (Red-Ringed Tupperware Party) Committee.
Naturally, the Committee says, lens comes first. All else.. you mean there is anything else?
OK, maybe you have a sparrow shot then to compare.?;)
Nice bird! Thanks for sharing :p
Keep chanting ...PMA...PMA...PMA
I decided it makes more sense to hold off on the 200 as well...there is always a possibility of a replacement being in the pipeline. They listened about the 50 f/1.2 so I am holding out hope for a 200 f/1.8
AH!! Now that is a valid excuse to defer a 300/2.8....
I've noticed that temptations never go away, no matter how practical one is, they keep whispering in one's ear until one acquiesces...
You hear the voices too?
Yes...and this place is the ultimate cesspool of temptation. Don't even come in here if you have a weak will.....Just look at what it has done to this crowd already!
http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/crackup.gif I blame POTN...
Hey, let's not get into weak wills...I come here just for the whisperings...girls got to get her thrills somewhere!
You enjoy the voices too? :p

Do NOT make me waste #2,000 on explaining the virtues of microwaving a chicken. I think I may have forgotten to mention that you have to skin the beast prior to cooking. Thus no unsightly, icky white skin!
Now drink up!!!

I think Wu heard the whispers too....I'm amazed she heard it saying such vile things though....I am pretty sure that Imac is a four-letter word. Can't believe the forum software hasn't gotten around to censoring that yet!
WAHAHAHAHHAHAA.... a man after my own heart :p
MacOS X is based on my favorite version of UNIX, but I still like the Intel x86 version better.
(nothing like stretching it out to make a point!)
I agree...when I hear whispers, I must GO FOR IT!
Ooooh..... them voices telling you that the 85/1.2L is in da house? The bokeh on that thing and the shutter speeds are ethereal..... I've never shot a 1.2 lens before and the SPEED....
Hey- I just don't like waiting. I do like making things last though.
I never go tlunch. The lunch delivery friend arrived about 2 minutes before the Fedex guy so I got sidetracked. I did have help unpacking it though but was not the first one to sti down and touch the keyboard.
Have salmon in the broiler now and enjoying my new 'puter. Life is good. Oh wait! I need a beer. brb
Cool, good to see you are finally taking care of yourself!
I have the 85 and love it. Like most of my lenses, it's cheap but has great IQ.
:D
You have a cow in your office?
The one that glares at him every morning on the way to work IIRC. I do not fear the cow, but I fear the purple fringing and CA on the cow's back!!

Coffee is not a substitute for DSL withdrawal but it eases the pain somewhat.

I imagine before week's end I will have this thing over by the couch. It is pretty portable and with Airport I don't have to keep it here at the "desk"
