Woohoo! Love the tripod comic! (I remember suggesting that one awhile back, glad to see it was used)

Last Friday while at a customers location he asked me if I knew anything about photography. So we talked a bit, he was a Canon film user back in the 70s, now he is looking at getting back into it with digital.

So I brought in my kit to him today, and let him play with it to help settle his mind on CANON digital (he was looking at Nikon).

He had issues understanding the 1.6x crop factor, so I brought my film SLR along and we compared what an scene looked like through the viewfinders.

So, what he is going to buy:
Canon 30D (or 40D if it comes in out in the next 1.5 months)
10-22
24-105 f/4
70-200 f/4

and then he wants to buy, later on, a 300mm f/4 + 1.4x TC and extension tube set.

So I think he will be very happy!

With all that f/4 stuff...he might want a flash to add to the mix. It helps.

Nice sales job, Scott. What's your commission? ;)

It's not uncommon for film shooters to have a hard time with the whole crop factor thing (in the beginning).

We talked about that - he was down to the 24-70 vs 24-105 debate...

f/4 to f/2.8 is only 1-stop... and the IS on 24-105 is what, 3-stops? So for what he is shooting (low motion) he doesn't think that the low DOF that a 2.8 lens would provide warrents buying the 24-70... I told him either would work for him (in theory).

He might get the 50 f/1.4 (he had that back in the film days)

His issue with crop factor was enough people told him it was a "magnification factor" and that isn't the case...

People wouldn't be so confused by the crap factor if they just understood that wysiwyg when you look through the viewfinder.

Final Frontier: Youtube here we come!
http://tuppervilleranch.com/comics/FFyoutube.jpgThat's the first real belly-laugh I've had in a while, and when my belly get's moving, that's a seismic even in most parts.

We spent a good portion of the day doing an inventory of the aunt's possessions, and we have a pretty good handle on what's going to Calfornia and what stays here.

The fun news....It looks like we're going to be able to buy her car (1 1/2 year-old Lexus with 6,000 miles on it). If so, we'll be driving home, and that will be a lot of fun compared to just climbing back on the airplane again.

Tommorw we start interviewing movers, and that's going to be an ordeal. They tend to be a pretty tricky bunch sometimes with their low-ball estimating, etc., etc. We've been through it a time or two, and I'm hoping I know all the right questions to ask.

Thanks again for the TR, Dan. It truly helped me with my homesickness.

You know where that comes from, right?

yes:
Angora wool or Angora fiber refers to the downy coat produced by the Angora rabbit. While their names are similar, Angora fiber is distinct from mohair, which comes from the Angora goat. Angora is known for its softness, low micron count (i.e. thin fibers), and what knitters refer to as a halo (fluffiness). It is also known for its silky texture.
Angora rabbits produce coats in a variety of colors, from white to black. Good quality angora fiber is around 12-16 microns in diameter, and can cost around 6 dollars per ounce. It felts very easily, even on the animal itself if the animal is not groomed frequently.
The fiber is normally blended with wool to give the yarn elasticity, as angora fiber is not naturally elastic. The blend decreases the softness and halo as well as the price of the finished object.

Comments inside your quote:

1. I like the contrast in this, the dark sky, with the bright white fence/lightpoles. The deck horizon seems bit tilted, but that is nit-picking... But! What is the subject? It doesn't really BLOW me away - but I still like that shot.

2. I like this because it was a horrible day to be shooting in and the picture turned out quite well. It has a really "dark" and "cold" look to it. I like, though I am not sure that it is the strongest of the bunch.

3. Classic shot :-D Sky is blown out - but that doesn't matter - there was nothing in the sky anyways... I like the leading lines.

4. I agree with Wool - a good photo. A bit grainy, but once you print it nobody will know.

5. Cloud shots like this are always neat. Again, not sure if it is your best of the bunch....

6. I just don't like this - sorry ;-) It seems too grainy and the water looks funny... like did you over sharpen it?

Mama Glock and her 17 off-spring are never far away. That reminds me of another bit of good news I received just before leaving on this trip.

When my friend closed his camera store, he had a couple handguns he had taken as a trade for photo gear many years ago (before it was a crime to do such things). One of the guns is a Stainless Steel Colt Gold Cup in 10mm (something of a rare piece). I was worried that it might be stolen, and trying to register it might have gotten me into a bit of trouble.

One of our tenants is head of detectives for a local PD, and I told him about it. He said he'd check it for me, and it turns out to be okay. I'll register it as soon as we get home, and then sell it. There's the equivalent of a decent lens wrapped up in that.

I always owned a Colt auto as long as I can remember up until a couple years ago, I traded my satin nickel .45 1911-A1 in on a .45 Sig Sauer. I had a heavily customized 38 Super that a friend of mine had built for combat competition. He got bored with it and sold it to me before it was broken in. It was too exotic to shoot, and I eventually traded it in, too (on another Sig).

I suspect I'll keep the Gold Cup. It's a real work of art. Instead, I'll sell everything else except the Ruger. There are still many beer cans out on the desert that really need killing, and they haven't improved on a .22 rimfire for beer can genecide. The 10mm will probably never be fired as long as I own it. My dainty little wrists just don't handle heavy loads well any more.

Okay after being asked by a table if my chefs 'jacked off' on their salad and that's why I wasn't willing to eat out of their hands i've decided.. that in the next month or so when I'm ready to quit my second job the very next table that references a mans penis in anyway, makes even a slightly suggestive comment as to my physical appearance, makes a racial comment no matter how unoffensive they think they are, or tells a joke that they find a hell of a lot funnier than it is i'm gonna let them have it. I never have before. in too many years to remember I have never once told anyone in my diningroom or sitting at my bar where they can go or what they can do with their hands or mouths.. It's about time. No more 'free passes' veiled sarcasm or raised eyebrows from me.. I'm not even gonna bother with an, 'ooops soo sorry I spilled your water'.. They are gonna get a piece of my mind..

Wow...sounds like it's been pretty horrid at job #2. I'm sorry Sari...I hate it when work has issues!

nope. it's not job #2 it's just bartending/waiting tables in general.. I have the most horrific stories.. People have said and done the absolute worst things to me.. I think part of me is desensitized to it.. Doesn't much faze me anymore.. I even forgot to be offended tonight.. But, as the Chef pointed out that's not a good thing.. I have every right to be pissed and insulted.. And it occured to me that I play the game too well.. and as a result my affection for the public and people has decreased by an extreme degree in the last few years.. and maybe I would like people more if I stood up to them... Unfortunately I have to be prepared to lose a gig over it.. Hence waiting until it's time to quit the second job before I actually have enough nerve to tell an insulting degrading customer where they can go.. I've just decided it's about time. I like my gig.. It grants me freedom I make more money than most people think.. But, it's hard, long hours physically very demanding and ofcourse the dealing with the public day in day out.. Instead of being burnt out and annoyed, telling jokes and bitching to my co-workers i'm actually going to stick up for myself and bartenders everywhere.. Don't worry whoever I tell off will deserve it. I'm just not going to follow the rules and stay quiet anymore.

LOL.. tonight wasn't that bad.. last week... last week was bad. an eighty year old man spent the better part of half an hour telling me why culturally his ancestors were superior to mine.. (and that's not even the worst).. I'm not burnt out exactly. I'm just sick of my sweep it under the rug, smile and say nothing and wait for them to leave personality.. Figure I need an attitude adjustment, just a slight one and nothing too extreme i'm not going to go aroudn telling everyone to go to hell and throwing pie in their face.. I'm just going to very calmly let somebody anybody know that people that work my job are not second class citizens and we deserve some respect..

Permagrin
18th of July 2007 (Wed), 01:09
I think everyone deserves respect but unfortunately in this "me" oriented era, not many people subscribe to my theories. Wool's right, Africa is coming soon and it's always helpful to get away to get a perspective.

LMAO.. too true. the reality is I like my work.. it's not earth shattering i'm not saving lives, ending world hunger or anything even moderately important.. But, it suits my needs right now.. I don't really want to go back to school.. I consider a lot of the time I spent there running in place, going from major to major trying to find something that stuck.. the only thing I figured out is that I don't know what I want to do.. I do know that i'm really bad at commiting to things and the idea of being stuck in a place because I was commited to classes made me miserable.. I'd rather go to Africa, come home and find a gig so that I can spend the winter somewhere new.. (I know there are pictures to take) So, whether that's working at a ski lodge in colorado.. going East and working in a hotel in New England or finding a cruise ship to take me to Alaska, or trying one of the lodges in a National Park.. i'm not sure yet. It suits me, i'm good at it.. the only downside is that people leave a lot to be desired.. For every person that's courteous and respectful there's one that isn't. and out of every thirty or so people there's somebody that should be locked up in their basement and never allowed to talk to people.

Dom- when you shoot for them when you get the position, will you be using their gear? IF so, you might suggest to them now that you show them what you can do with that. Even if it is getting a telephoto lens from them. THen shoo the thursday match,

I've mentioned that I"m too short in focal length and I've just been told to weight till the action comes to me.

Cropping is an important part of shooting sports (That isn't just my opinion, I remember the canon guy at the tulip workshop we went to who did sports photography for a American Football team saying he just used center point AF and cropped to make it look like he wanted). So I wouldn't discount using it.

That said, don't crop off limbs.

Second, shoot in Manual and don't worry about blowing some highlights. The faces and the people that are the focus of the shot are what should be properly exposed. Most of the shots there have the underexposed people.

All that said, you have caught some good action, you just need to work more on the technical side of things... How long do you have? Practice as much as you possibly can to learn how to anticipate where the game is going... (probably easier said than done for me, with softball I can just watch what bases have a force play )

I agree cropping is a important part but you can only crop so far before it starts looking soft , its not the cropping that bothers me its how much i have to crop

I tried manual and the exposure was bouncing all over the place so i went with TV, I used center weighted how ever now thinking about it with the setting sun being behind all of the play from one end I'm gonna get better results with center weighted. hopefully that should improve results

how can you enjoy the dentist it makes me want to pass out every time I go, how ever I have yet to need any work since i was about 6 :D

There's a director's cut? I heard that he was making one that was a direct copy from the original books (three of them, I think), which I own and are awesome. He remade them so faithfully that he tried to get Frank Miller credited as the director.

But even worse is this wbesite for the local kamera shop.

They got a good idea with the videos. But it is NOT a good idea to play the same video every time a user visits the main page.

That's why the FlashBlock extension was invented for Firefox. It only plays if I click on the video's window.

I've mentioned that I"m too short in focal length and I've just been told to weight till the action comes to me.

I would go with spot metering if you have it.

I missed the part where you don't have a good tele, that would create too much cropping oops.

I didn't say I enjoy the dentist.. I just said I like the sound of the drill ha.

Scott, she'd hit on you and you'd brush her off anyway. So don't even start!

Aniston. She and Brad Pitt smoke like chimneys. I watched an interview awhile back where they wanted to quit, but they just loved it so much they hated to even think about quitting.
HAHAHAHAH!!!!

Nice! (since yoda isn't around... Pwnd...).

I still got my 70-300mm to be honest. Mom wondered if I should sell it when I got the 80-200, but for some reason I keep thinking "what if I want that extra reach?". I hate to not keep stuff I've bought. :s

Is the quality of the photos from 80-200 better than the 70-300 ? If you can say yes to that then I don't think you will miss the extra 100 mm. That was the way I had it when I replaced my 75-300 IS with 70-200 f/4. The better quality fully outweighed the loss of 100 mm.

Geesh, am I the only one who finds Catherine Zeta Jones beautiful? And Aishwarya Ray is absolutely gorgeous, but not that known in the west I think...

Hm, yeah it most likely does... I'm crap at seeing that stuff to be fully honest, I mainly bought it for the 2.8... :p

Sell the 75-300 and grab a Tamron SP Pro 1.4x TC to use with your 80-200....better IQ and more flexible too.

Mooorning everyone :)

It's still raining lightly and not hot here (YAY)

I'm another day closer to 40 (boooo)

there's nothing on the agenda (yay)

I would rather have a visit from Jessica Biel any old day.;)

that's a good idea Claire. These days, I'm finding the IQ is so good on some of these lenses that even using a tc affects very little...

okay, well since no one's here, I've been out and about...check out these MBIF shots...they're really great! I think it's hard to get great exposure & sharpness and fantastic color on shots like these...he did a great job.
