I have a Mac Mini that I keep in a box. I take it out just to sniff it once in a while. LIfe is good.
Well so it *IS* good for something after all :p
I prefer the new Intel versions.. they are nice, small, compact and easily stuffed in a colocation provider's rack.
Speaking of colocation, I did not get a server, but I got a virtual private server (VPS), subtle differences but still.
Anyway they turned up service yesterday, gave me a 50% discount (I like that) and I can move in today. Of course I actually feel like NOT working, so I will move in next month. :p

At first the brain went *tick* *tick* *Fatal trap 12: core dumped* *crash* when you said the 85/1.8 is faster...
After rebooting it, I then realized you meant AF speed
The 1.2 is very slow to someone who is used to blindingly fast ring USM. I know it's more than acceptable to some folks and I'm not questioning that or their judgement but I personally find it slow. I would really like something faster. The 1.2 is a craftsman's (women's as well.. using the generic term) lens, and perfection takes time. 1.8's better for us run-n-gun shooters.
Focus-by-wire instead of mechanical FTM is also very very wierd feeling.

I have an early 85 f/1.2L, and it focuses sloooooowly. It's a small price to pay, and isn't so objectionable that I'm tempted to upgrade to the MkII version. I did get to play around with my 100-400 today, and I had forgotten how slow a lens can be. It gets there eventually, but it takes its time.

It is SLOW! I think it's terrible for photographing birds...which was the reason I wanted a long lens....
But that 85 produces wonderful results, slow or not...I don't know that I'd say the same for the 1-4 (at least on the long end).

Now I remember why Petkal's treeshark shots using the 1.2 were so remarkable. AF speed is not exactly what you want while chasing animals ;)
The 1.2 needs the slower AF for accuracy anyway, since the DOF is so amazingly thin. However, AF accuracy is really all there.. I paint the target and the system nails it.

Interesting observation: I just did some calculations and realized I can stock my ultra fast prime lens kit for LESS than the cost of a 24-70/2.8. This means deploying a 28/1.8, 50/1.4 and 85/1.8. WOHOOOO!!
No longer am I tempted by the 24-70. I will use my IS as general purpose walkaround and the fast primes for the days when I need the speed.
85/1.8 to be here by this evening....WAHAHAHHAHAA...
I am very happy... I made the right choice. Instead of building a f/2.8 system to 'do it all', I get a lightweight f/4 system that is very flexible (and a 5D that will let me trade ISO for aperture and speed), and an ultrafast prime lens kit for the days when I need ALL the available light I can get.

IQ of the 135 and 200 being similar.. I think because they are a similar 'stretch' design. They took the 135 and stretched it to 200, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The 100/2 seems like a stretched 85/1.8 too.

It's usefulness is evident by the great shots many of you have posted here, and on other threads. I've seen many with a 1dMk2 shoot some frames that don't even compare with those that others have shot with the Rebel (Sari's snow shots, for example.).

more than likely.. it's between that and Bigma... But, I'm fairly sure that the 100-400 is going to win out.. i'm not in a huge hurry to buy it, I do have some time before I have to think about a telephoto.. and i'm pretty tempted to pick up a 30D.. just for the sake of having two bodies.. we'll see...

in what way not fast enought, AF or just FPS?
Well, I don't think the 100-400 is the fastest focusing lens...and the 5fps seemed to help it out some, especially bird in flight shots....because if I used the 5fps, the 3-5 shots were in focus...almost like the lens took a bit to get focused on it's subject and then it was sharp and hot...but with the 3 fps...my keeper rates on moving subjects was about 2% total. Stationery subjects were a different matter...the keeper rate rose to almost 90% on both bodies...so I just felt the combo was the problem. With the 30D, I had about 50-60% keeper ratio on the bird shots...(in comparison).
The 5D has a very good AF...faster than the 30D, which made me originally think I could safely get rid of the 30D and have no probs...but for some reason, (for me) that particular (5D 1-4) lens/body combo didn't work so well.

I have that combo and love it!
I also have the bigma. I never really was able to master it. The 1-4 is so much lighter. I can handhold it and get presentable shots. I could NEVER hand hold the bigma. I know a lot of folks do, but I sure couldn't.
theflyingkiwi
19th of December 2006 (Tue), 00:29
that's interesting. I wonder if it's the 1.6 crop that makes the difference.
since the 5D AF is better than the 30D, you would think that you should be able to get the same amount of keepers.
or it could be just a mind set.
then I really can't say. I haven't used the 100-400, nor have I used the 100-300.

The Sigmonster and Bigma just aren't practical lenses for most people. They are too big, too heavy and too slow to be effective in most situations. They certainly are capable of taking fine pictures, but unless you're a Bubba or King Kong type...lugging these beasts around just won't work.

It's possible that the lens and my 5D needed a joint calibration...except that it work a lot of times, just fine with the 5D...but it is still a possibility.
It's definitely lighter than the sigma. The only thing I would suggest is not waiting until the last minute to buy it. There's a bit of a learning curve. First there's getting used to the weight (it's not light but it is lighter than a lot of big zooms)...then there's getting used to what light to use it in (it's not really a low light lens) and the whole taking a photo w/the IS...with my 24-105 and the 70-300 DO IS, you can just snap the shot...don't have to press the shutter part way for a micro-second and then take the shot. It seemed like with the 100-400 that you had to do that...I don't know why but I've heard others mention that they too have to do that with it as well. Once you get used to it, it's second nature, but of all my lenses, (those that I do or have owned) this one really flummoxed me the most. Some lenses are made for ease (that's how I felt about the 24-105 and the 17-40)...they just can't help but give beautiful shots  but I worked my buns off to master the 1-4 and never did. And yet some people get amazing shots with it...anyway, like I said, I think there's a learning curve with it (but I also think there is with any large lens...learning to handle it's individual characteristics) and it's worth it to master it before your trip.

You can even slip in a 1.4x 3rd-party TC and still auto-focus in good light. That's 560mm with IS....not found on the Sigmas.

It sounds like the 100-400 would be your best bet, Sari, in terms of reach, weight, and image quality. Heaven knows you won't be lacking any light in Africa. Are you considering a new camera body, too? The reason why I'm asking is that there are several used 20D's on www.keh.com (http://www.keh.com) for around $750 each. For the trip you're planning, I'd definitely want a backup camera.

Most importantly, if you have a camera malfunction, you won't be w/o a camera during the trip!
And I agree with the others, if I was going to take anything on a trip like that, it would be the 1-4. I can't imagine trying to haul the bigma (or get sharp shots with something so heavy). You CAN handhold the 1-4, for a long time before it's weight gets to you (at least, I'm judging you're about my height, slighter but probably stronger)...

I upgraded from the cheap 90-300 lens so it's a big step in a lot of ways. one of things that I did expect was the weight when using it all day.
Almost everything that I have shot with it so far is motorsport, and I had found with the old lens that the camera would lose focus, and trying to get the focus back I would lose a couple of cars. However I find the 1-3 great and it focus quite quickly, even in low light. that was something I was supprised at when I first got it. How quick it was to focus. even with the 1.4x attached it's still quite quick. quicker than the old 90-300.
But in saying that I haven't used a lot of other lens of that focal length, so I really don't know how it compares to the 300F4.

1-4 on a 20D.. tammy on the XT.. ofcourse take the 70-200 and the 28-105.. and I will be picking up a short prime.. it seems like I always want either wide or long.. and not much in between.. ofcourse the 70-200 is my favorite for portraits (outside)....

But in saying that I haven't used a lot of other lens of that focal length, so I really don't know how it compares to the 300F4.
in a perfect world I can shoot with only primes.. Like Liza.. but, alas I must be practical..

what are friends for? spending your cash :)
you could find that the replacement for the 30d could be out by the time you need to buy a new body.

the slow kiwi is quick!
Really, by next spring the 30D should drop more in price (it's already gone down a great deal) and it's an excellent camera!

yea yea what ever ! ;)
you know I had thought of that, only after clicking on the submit button. I told a work mate that if canon brought out a new 1 series under 5k NZ then I would be buying it.
but I think I would be dreaming with that.
