Oh man....kidney stones are no fun....the nurse I had said she would gladly give birth 10 times instead of having one kidney stone. I know I had never experienced any pain like that....even when I broke my back. I hope you have something to take to get you through it....

I really do feel like I've had back labor for the past three days. And I'm in the transition stage now. I'm so busy with portraits this week, I had to schedule my CT scan at 6:30 am on Friday.
And, yes, I have a dandy little prescription for Vicodin waiting for me at the pharmacy. :D

Twisted sister....I like the sound of that. :)

Whoa...bummer! Although I totally understand...I'm that way about monkeys...

Liza, post an old photo of yourself....got any prom ones or anything? It's kind of fun to see what we all looked like a ways back...(notice I tactfully didn't say waaaaay back, since I posted mine, I thought I'd better not.. )
and yes, very sorry about your stone!

I'll have to find one and fire up the scanner. I don't have any prom pics, since it was totally uncool to go to the prom when I was a teenager. I may have some on a CD somewhere. This could take a while, since I have a senior session at 2:30.

Oh my gosh that sounds horrible (I had back labor but have never had a kidney stone)! Don't they have medication that can dissolve them? (or is that gall stones...I can never remember)

I had to figure out how to use my scanner...we got a new one for photos and I'd never used it before....

In the 80's prom was tres-cool...along with leg warmers, high heels w/jeans, big hair and TONS of make-up. Thank heavens those days are OVER! Although, I have seen high heels with jeans crop up again...

I wanted to wait to scan these to show, but someone had other ideas. ;)
WE'll wait, Liza.
Man, I'd have picked up that vicodn right away!

Kids are two hours late and no call. :( I need to go to campus and to the pharmacy and pet store before 5 but I want to be here when they get here. It is a small town but that walk would take a while. Guess I'll just hang out here for a while longer. see what shows up.

I don't know if they have any meds for it or not. They will be able to determine more after the CT scan, I'm sure. After my senior shoot this afternoon, I'm going to take a pain pill and nap with the cat for a while.

I'll have to dig through the old albums to see if I have any pics. Most of the ones I have are from an earlier point in my childhood.

Prom for me was during the 70's, so there was still a lot of Vietnam era hippie-type sentiment going on. It's funny that fashions from that era are now making a comeback. I see a lot of it at school.

Help me out here folks ;)

I wander into the lens forum to share a little bit of experience and then I walk out with this:

The new 7-2f4IS is 5 oz heavier but still a "lightweight". Optics, build, AF is top-class:

http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/image/69965032/original.jpg

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TEMPTED!!!!!!

This is the setup... I have a 70-300 IS, as my lightweight telezoom. A Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 for the days when I need the aperture, but then again, the 5D's ISO performance is so good, and the light around here is so bright, that I am really wondering if I need f/2.8. In fact I stop the Sigma down to f/4 to get better performance, most of the time. And it's bloody heavy. Carry it with a 1D, stand around for a few hours, notice biceps get bigger.

Then there's the 1-4 which beats the 70-300 in weight.. it's 200gm heavier! Nice lens though. Usually paired to the 5D so the net weight is lower.

The problem is, as I slammed the new 7-2/4 IS early on for, is the pricetag. I envisioned that the lens would pop up around say, $800-900, which is still reasonable, but $1250 with no tripod collar is ridiculous. I'm also wondering if I could live without the f/2.8 aperture.. I bet the moment I sell the Sigma something will come along that needs f/2.8.

I could definitely live with the f/4 IS reduced weight though!

Case in point.....one of the upcoming photo ops is going to take me on a 8km (5mi) hike to see a waterfall. Loadout is expected to be 5D, 17-40, 24-105 plus long tele. You can bet that the Sigma and 1-4 are going to spend the day sleeping at home..

And I really should NOT spend any more money

True, true... actually I am thinking about the rate of return on my long tele's. They don't seem to yield very good ROI in terms of keepers whereas the 24-105 and the 17-40 have long since justified their existence in terms of keepers produced.

I am hoping the price will drop, actually. $1250 has, and still does, strike me as quite unreasonable. It REALLY does not cost that much to add stabilization, even if they had to do the R&D (which has already been done anyway) and even after I factor in their other project costs. $900.. done deal. $1250....no go.

eh-hemmmm. I may not be here full time right now, but. . . . make that 4 if he buys any!

Why the overlap though?

The overlap only comes into play if you fill a card...just switch bodies and keep on shooting...until you get a break in the action that will allow you time to swap out cards.

Lightstream
22nd of November 2006 (Wed), 20:47
Ah, I see.. I typically size my cards for at least 400 shots in whatever shooting mode I am using, so that's plenty for me. Your situation might be more demanding though.

I just looked at the photo of you and your '79 camera - what hardware were you using back then? I've always been curious about the days before my time.

HEY! They always said it's not the size, it's how you use it!

Actually, that's a myth perpetuated by men. ;)

Unless you are totally excited by the prospect of the 70-200 f/4 IS....I would continue to just save my funds until the time came that a lens happened along that was truly exciting to you. Technology marches on....you never know what Canon might be going to announce come time for PMA...

I agree with this 100%, as I'm no fan of f/4 lenses. Don't really care about IS when I'm shooting sports or other low light stuff. Give me a 2.8 (or wider) any day!

Lord Malone said the 20D is for ghurl-men, real men carry a 1-series with big lens. Therefore, I can't be a ghurl-men, but by extension, you must be HE-MAN to carry ALL THAT and not notice!!

I want a 1 series, too. Does that make me a HE-MAN, too?

I can tell you that I never watched Speed Racer...never even heard of it...probably something from my time abroad.

I think my kids watched this. I'm from the Mighty Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, and Rocky & Bullwinkle era.

All who follow me, remember to bring thy macro.........!

No problem. On the rare occasion I actually shoot for pleasure, I shoot macros. Butterflies are among my favorite things to photograph.

I'm baaaaack. And pleasantly looped on Vicodin, to be honest. I can't figure out how to hook up this scanner to save my soul, so there won't be any pics of me from the old days until the fog clears. The photo shoot went well. Wyatt assisted me today and took a photo of me that I'll share in lieu of and older one:

I agree with this 100%, as I'm no fan of f/4 lenses. Don't really care about IS when I'm shooting sports or other low light stuff. Give me a 2.8 (or wider) any day!

I want a 1 series, too. Does that make me a HE-MAN, too?

I think my kids watched this. I'm from the Mighty Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, and Rocky & Bullwinkle era.

He's eleven. I kind of like the shot of me. He took several others, but that was the best of the bunch. I don't photograph well at all, so what you see is what you get. :)

That's what I am thinking. Weight/portability vs speed. It so happens at the moment, most of my work is in broad daylight, so that is fine.. heck, f/8 will do, I stop my 24-105 all the way down and drop ISO. However, not so long ago, at some events I was swearing I wish I had a f/2.8 - I could DEFINITELY have used it. This was shortly prior to the arrival of my Sigma 7-2/2.8. Then after I bought it I don't ever seen to use it wide open. Bleah. I can shoot 1/4000 at ISO 200 f/4! So bright I leave the shades on when looking thru the VF.

Err.... that was in reference to Wool carrying TWO 1-series and two big telezooms along with another couple of lenses all at once.. ;)

Oh, weight doesn't really bother me. I usually carry a 10D and a 20D with big zooms attached at ball games. It's just given me big biceps. :) I shoot low light a good part of the time and also am in situations in which a fast shutter is important.

And I don't smile a whole lot for pictures. Hate 'em with a passion. I was in pain when that pic was taken with the kidney stones and having just finished that senior session at the park, thus the intense look.

:D

Actually I am looking to buy a 28-105 or 24-85 for my 1D, if I can find one at a suitably low cost, however that doesn't seem to be likely. Willing to take Condition 8+ or 9 lenses in exchange for the lowered price of course, but so far, no takers.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that... if I was in pain I wouldn't let anybody with a camera near me :( no wonder you're on the Vicodin..

I hate lugging the gear TO the event, but once at the event it's all good. Do you move around a lot at the games? I tend to follow events so it is a lot of footwork, running around, trying to be in position to snipe before the key participants do stuff, or chasing after them when they do something silly, etc. but I suppose I will get used to it. The Sigma is really not bad... not an L, and the zoom ring turns the 'wrong way' (Nikon way BTW), but I am getting used to it. Plus the fact that it cost me less than half the price of a new 70-200/4 ISL..

I probably need the workout anyway. ;)

I move around constantly at ball games. And I used the school's Sigma 70-200 for the last few football games. It's a great lens for night games, albeit a bit short at times. What I really want is the Sigma 120-300. At basketball games, I use my primes on two bodies and am all over the gym. Basketball is my sport of choice to photograph, so I'm excited about the season beginning. :)

Now that is a nice lens. The Sigma 120-300 has no rival at all, and if I was shooting at night I would definitely demand as fast an aperture as possible. In fact, if the Sigma's imaging performance is close to, or on par with the Canon 300/2.8 it might be a better alternative. IS isn't always much help when you crank shutter speeds high enough to stop action (much as I love my IS systems, they are for every OTHER situation where shutter speed is not enough). Park that lens on a pod (definitely a pod lens), and you're good to go.

PS: Did some checking...

NEW EF 300/2.8 IS USM L - $3850
New Sigma 120-300 - $2399
Condition 10 used 120-300 (practically new, as my 100-400 was) - $2150
Condition 9 used 120-300 - $1799

Wowwwwww. That IS a big price difference.

Crashoran gave me first dibs on his when he sold it, but I didn't have the 2K at the time. I just think it would be a stellar lens for field sports, and I already have a heavy duty monopod for it. From what I've been told, I could probably hand hold it for 15 minutes at a time, but no longer. I've seen some great samples of images taken with the lens, and I'm sold on it in terms of IQ and versatility. Canon is missing the boat not having a zoom in this focal range.

120-300 wouldn't be too long for a gym lens?

(I do no sports...so I haven't a clue...)

liza
23rd of November 2006 (Thu), 01:03
Not only would it be too long, it would also be too slow. For gym sports, it's really best to shoot with a fast prime like the 85mm f/1.8.

PG: 85/1.8 on 1.6X crop = 135/2 on 5D in your lineup.. you'd use that...

liza: I just checked the weight - six pounds ALONE - I'd have to take frequent breaks with a camera body on that. As it is, I don't shoot continuously with my 1D/70-200 rig (6lbs combined) it is already heavy enough. But as to whether it's handholdable, I'd say yes, it can be done.. not easily, but done.

I would prefer to park such a lens on a full tripod though :D (already felt that about the Bigma, a mere 1850gm compared to the 2600gm of this beast)

Also, another question.. do you attach your lenses directly to the pod or do you use a ballhead on top of the pod? I find it easier to just attach directly (or with a dedicated QR-only assembly - the Giottos MH-625, though I left that somewhere far away.. gotta go back for it some day). Then I pan by turning the lens and pod.

Definitely an opportunity for Canon though... they seem to cater to telephoto users, so they should consider this.

Yes, it's heavy but the IQ is worth it.

When I use the monopod, and that isn't very frequently, I use a ballhead. If I had one with a tripod collar, though, I'd attach it directly. I just hate using a pod in the first place because it hampers my mobility and is just a general PITA when I'm trying to get out of the way of 300 pound football players hurtling toward me.

Wow handheld all the way! http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/bow.gif

I usually prefer to shoot pod-less as well because I move so much too.

Currently reading up some stuff about the Sigma, very interesting lens.

About the only time I've used that new monopod was when I shot the first half of a football game early in the season with a 70-200 f/4. The light was still adequate to get me through most of the game if I used a monopod. But I hated every minute of it.

I just shoot constantly and have developed good musculature and a steady hand over the years.

Anyway, I am thinking of taking a road trip for a couple of days this weekend, take some photos, drive a scenic route.. etc.

Dya think that's a good idea? Part of me is tempted to just hide at home and sleep, but that also strikes me as tremendously unproductive.
