SORRY PG! I shouldn't have told him lest he poach the 5D!

;)

puddle.. the new XTi is awesome!! It's the be-all-end-all camera and it has 10MP of resolution, more than all of the others!

I always get a kick out of people that keep saying they need such wide lenses...99 times out of 100 when I go shoot...I am wishing I had much longer lenses. I made the mistake of taking a 17-40 to Disney...should have had my 24-105 or even the 70-200.

Loved the movie.. at times heartbreaking and at others tremendously inspiring. You can definitely tell the Pern influence.

Well, I'm glad you understood the Pern reference.... I wasn't too sure if any one other than Lisa would get it....

I think the 24-105 would be great at Disneyland/world...Puddle rarely uses a wide angle but I use my 17-40 alot.

I guess it depends on what you're shooting.

Unless I'm bird shooting, the 24-105 is on my camera 75% of the time. But it can't do what the 10-22 can do. Do I use it a ton? No. But when I use it, nothing else will do.

I'm really proud of myself. When I first started to work out, I could only put a Rebel XT and the kit lens on the bench press bar, do three sets of eight reps, and call it a work out. Now, however, I'm up to my 30D, Lisa's 5D, the 24-105 and my 100 macro. Sometimes, when I really want to get a good "burn", I throw on the Lensbaby, too. Sure, I'm sore, but I'm starting to see some results. It's good....

Really? Wasn't it just an incremental upgrade? I have a 1Dinosaur (4MP) so both seem attractive options. What makes the N so much more attractive?

I do like the Picture Styles though...I actually contacted Canon asking if they have a tone curve for the classic 1D that closely approximates what the Standard style will give me. I am quite sure they can cook one up, it's just a matter of whether they want to (I have a feeling they don't).

Three kids! Yikes....but I guess that's to be expected.
Glad you like him, let's hope for the best! :)

Oh, three kids aren't bad. Two are adults and the third is a junior in high school. Mine are still at home!

Those are good choices. I am still quite happy with my Tamron 28-75.

I have one of those, too. It's a pretty decent midrange zoom. I'll probably use it on the backup camera when I shoot weddings.

I like my Tamron 90 but I've never used any others.

Anyway, I think it's a good starter kit for him. We went to a camera store today and tested out a Nikon d200 (that thing feels as heavy as a MKIIN and it DOES NOT have a control dial!! buttons buttons buttons...doesn't seem intuitive at all) but we tested it anyway, to see what he prefers.

I have the Canon 100mm macro. It's a keeper! My shooting buddy has the Nikon D200. He swears by the Nikon product and really likes this camera despite my efforts to lure him away from the dark side. :)

Well TD, he changed his mind. Decided to buy the Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the 70-200L...He could do all three of those and get the speed of 2.8 for only $140 more than the 17-40L. He's not infected with L fever yet ;) (I hope they are good lenses...)

Let me know how he likes the Tamron 17-50. I'm considering that one as well instead of the 17-55 Dust Sucker. For 1/3 of the cost, I think it would be a good move for me.

I always get a kick out of people that keep saying they need such wide lenses.

It is pretty funny. When I shot film for all those years, the widest I had was a 50mm kit lens!

Well, I'm glad you understood the Pern reference.... I wasn't too sure if any one other than Lisa would get it....

Dragonriders of Pern? Sure, why wouldn't we? :)

I'm debating giving my daughter my 20D and reclaiming my D30....like the 1D...there is something special about that camera.

I feel the same way about my 10D. My son wants it when I upgrade my backup cameras.

Save your money Yoda...the 1Dmk2n is where you want to go...the mk2 isn't worth it to me.

The only think about the Mk IIN that's really interesting is the larger LCD screen. I really don't see any vital specs that significantly separate the two.

The n is just a whole lot nicer...with the little refinements...picture styles, bigger lcd, seemingly better battery life...latest and greatest...the original mk2 just doesn't excite me. Starting to see lots of them floating around for 1800 or less USD. The 1D still has the magic sensor...it may kill batteries...but it has the touch when it comes to capturing images...the same magic the D30 had.

I LIKE the styles. While seemingly just a little bit different, they turned out to be a big issue with me and the 5D.. I initially dismissed them but eventually really came to like them.

As for the 1DM2.. $1.8K.. WHERE?!? That is a tremendously good price!

I think I know why this sort of thing happens. A certain camera/sensor/processor system will give a certain look.. almost like its unique fingerprint. Once you grow attached to that look it is very hard to give it up, and no two cameras are alike as the progress of sensors and image processors march on. For example I didn't like the 1D's images straight out of the camera.. instead I worked hard to make it look like the 5D. At least Canon's picture styles go some way towards bridging this difference. However, I do understand, for those who got used to the 1D 'look', there ain't quite nothing like it.

Hahaha.. speaking of spending someone else's money -

I have tremendous willpower...I walked into the camera shop and left without buying a single thing!! However, while I was there, I sampled the 100 macro (which is MUCH lighter than the spec sheet seems to imply it is.. it's 600gm and it feels like 400).

Not only that, I sold someone a 30D, 17-40, 100 macro, 430EX, Velbon CF ultra-premium tripod, ST-E2 speedlite transmitter, the whole nine yards....man I should get PAID for that!! :p

PG.. the Velbon is your fault.....it is a mighty FINE tripod... and I was tempted ;)

I asked to look at it, and the other guy ended up buying it :D

Mark.. no snobbishness here. However, remember this is the RED RINGED Tupperware Party.. associated dues must be paid to the Canon Temple of the Red L from time to time. ;)

:p

You guys are too late.. did I forget to mention I was broke? I did $2.5K of damage in the spendathon and now must hawk glass before I jump back into the fray. Anybody wants a 70-200/2.8?

Oh no....could young master Yoda be forced to wash windshields at busy intersections for pocket change? Could our hero be reduced to shooting with a $50 Vivitar P&S? Do part time camera salesman positions provide enough income for him to keep his head above water? Stay tuned for breaking news!:p

I have an 85/1.8 on the way and last known status is left the US on 26th December.

I guess I am not getting that 85/1.8 :(

Yup. After the last screwup with another carrier, I picked USPS instead, which has historically always been reliable. Except for one thing: during the Christmas season, EVERYTHING goes to pieces.

The package is trackable EMS, their premium service, but last tracking info indicates that it left the US. I've called the postal service here (where REGULAR mail is delivered as an OVERNIGHT service.. they are that good, and that reliable with the hundreds of packages I have sent through them), and they indicate that it has not arrived yet.

So, Dec 26th and Jan 2nd here, where is the package? In Alaska or dropped into the Pacific somewhere? Planes don't fly that slow... if it takes six days to make the flight chances are the plane is going absolutely nowhere.

I am frustrated enough that the next time I buy I am simply going to choke up the price premium that local dealers command. I think it's not worth the aggravation. Besides, my local dealers are the good ones.. so good I will stop to chat and help newbies even if I am not buying anything, just like today.

I am sick and tired of working international.... those of you with a country big enough to roam and who have never needed to leave your own borders are unimaginably lucky. When this hitch ends I am never leaving home for extended periods of time again.

Fear not...your package might be there. USPS tracking only updates twice...when shipped and when delivered. There is no interim tracking.

Intl' shipments usually have more aggressive tracking, they are scanned at each waypoint. I really hope they didn't screw it up. The only thing worse than losing packages is filing claims. I have ZERO faith in insurance - it will never get paid. Last shipment that went missing was fully insured.. and I was never compensated.

Internationally, I've only dealt with inbound shipments from Hong Kong...I knew I had the package a full day before there was a tracking update. Domestic tracking is worthless at best. I have had a couple of insurance claims over the years, but no problem getting them resolved.
