320GB + 120GB one machine
250GB dedicated net-attached storage (one more bay available)
320 + 160 + 120 on another
(all connected.. I don't believe in single machines, single points of failure.. my storage is networked)
Wow, 1.29TB. I never actually REALIZED I had that much.
Across my network I have just over 5TB right now....I can see where more would be nice...

3 admits in 2 hours, plus 5 other patients, everyone nauseated and in pain, one confused old guy who's been yelling, a nurse called in sick, new security guards who keep tripping the door alarms.....enough? That's only part of my night.
There aren't enough drugs here for me to share......;) ;)

I typically run it till it breaks as well, or has depreciated to zero. I also tend to dislike spending $$ on computers.. because it's all $$ thrown down a black hole. At least my glass will still be here and retain most of its value even if I don't use it that much.

Watching the Australian Open (tennis) because I am so tremendously bored.... all the camera angles are bad, there isn't a single appearance of white with red ring.. where are the damn photogs hiding!!

I just did a backwards upgrade on my 3 most used machines...I went to 4 - 500gb WD drives in my primary....the 4 - 320gb drives from there went to the secondary machine...and the 4 - 200gb drives from there went to the other...I need to take the 4 - 80gb drives from machine #3 and replace the 40gb drives in the other two desktops....I have a separate 1tb dedicated backup....and think I will add another....I just worry about writing pictures to CD or DVD long term....as cheap as hard drives are now...I would rather just keep everything backed up on a couple of different hard drives.

Watching tennis would be ok...but they keep showing these people running around hitting a little ball instead of showing the cameras on hand....what on earth are they thinking...???
Wait...Maria and Lindsey are interesting...!!!

Yes, I tend to prefer hard disk storage as that can be monitored and checked regularly. My recent 'storage problems' were less problem, and more preemptive action when the early scans picked up problems way before anything else did. Good strategy too.. migrating an array of 4 disks backwards.
I burn to DVD anyway, but consider those backups of absolute last resort. Can't hurt to add yet another layer to my defense in depth strategy... in the unlikely event that both systems AND the net-attached storage fail.. well.. I have nothing to lose ;)

VERY odd....
They just panned a long slow shot over the photog pit at the Australian Open on TV and in addition to the usual raft of Great Whites, I saw a black.. well not quite Canon black but very very dark gray long lens with a red ring. It's not any Canon that I've ever seen before.

I submitted a few. ::) and they aren't on the 'preview of shots submitted link' that tommy posted earlier. *hmmmmm*
I know that they arent good enough to win, but it would be nice if they make it to the voting, and at least get a couple votes.
Maybe someone I know will recognize my shots and give me at least one vote for ego sake, LOL.
Hey Cat. I'm sure your photos will get votes on their own merit! You have some good ones in the archive there :D
Oh, and the 'preview' gallery is literally that, a sample of the shots already submitted for consideration for all shares (I think two per share) that will be changed every so often so don't worry if you don't see yours yet. Just gives us all an idea of the sort of shots being submitted at present.
You're much more brave than I. I'm not even going to attempt it. It would be a pain to try to get modeling releases anyhow.
Go on, give it a go. Check with Scottes, but I don't think the need for releases is as onerous as most people are thinking. This is going to be an 'art' book so the pictures are being used editorially which relieves much of the need for releases in many instances.

Just thought I'd ask.. my entry is going to be a cityscape, that was shot from a public walkway.. just checking - but there shouldn't be a need for any releases, right?
Mgdh
17th of January 2007 (Wed), 07:33
As I understand it, no. Some buildings do require releases if they are the main subject but a general cityscape should be fine. However, I don't know the situation where you are, might be worth a quick check with any local photo clubs etc who may know differently.
But we have the overrider that it is an art book, we are not receiving any benefit from it (not being paid etc) which goes a long way to sorting this ;)

hmm that would be nice. In fact I was looking for something like that a few months ago. I went in to a local store and see have ya got anything like ^ and they say. nope and that's it. Don't ask if they can get it for me or anything. needless to say I walk out with my money in my pocket.
What head have you got, or planning to get.
B&H will gladly ship it to you. Back home the local shop is outstanding.. they can get virtually anything I want (and a lot of things I DON'T want).. so I don't mind supporting them all the way. They were even telling me about how they went out of their way to get a 400 DO (yes, the diffractive optics Great White) for a customer.
Here.. well suffice to say I rely on B&H.

this shop in akl is perhaps the best camera place in NZ, which isn't saying alot about the local market. anyway I think B&H from now on. I can order it on line and know what's happening with it.
it seems that customer service isn't a requirement these days.

Sitting here, watching a DVD of "Murder, She Wrote." I have a theory. Sure, it's kinda out there, but let's, for a moment, through caution to the wind.
I'm of the opinion that Jessica Fletcher is not the sweet little authoress that she is made out to be. IMHO, she is a serial killer. A genius, to be sure, but a mass murderer none the less.
Every where she goes, bodies just suddenly "turn up". Then, less than an hour later, someone is arrested for the murder.
C'mon, doesn't anyone get it? For years, this lady travels around, people are murdered, and, conveniently, someone else gets the finger.
It's a wonder she gets invited anywhere. "Oh, look, it's Jessica. I.... gotta go..."

Unfortunately a lot of places have taken that mentality. "Forget customer service, screw the customer today for we may never see him again" - unfortunately it is a self fulfiling mentality, since after the customer has been screwed it is even MORE likely you won't see them again. So the Internet has encroached onto retail's turf, and retail fights back ironically by driving customers back to the Internet. We have a saying back home which describes a strategy backfiring in the rudest way possible (hence I won't repeat it), but it sure seems applicable to this situation.
However, I'm also seeing some positive trends. I recently complimented three businesses (one of them being the camera shop) on rendering outstanding service. I wrote in to them to say that this is the kind of service that ensures retail continues to be relevant in an Internet-enabled age by delivering the kind of service you absolutely CANNOT get over the Internet, full stop. That's quality of service for you. If this trend continues, even someone as used to Net shopping as myself will look forward to going back to retail.
Of course, such high service standards take real commitment and effort, they don't come easily, which is why so few places have them.. but that's why these places stand out.

Oh yeah, you were asking about the ballhead - I recently upgraded. I recommend the Benro KS-1 ballhead and A127n6 (A157n6 replaces it) as a very good midrange tripod that will do a great job and is tremendous value for money. However I recently upgraded to one of the ultra premium ballheads.. this is my Markins Q3 (left) next to an Arca B1 Monoball that I borrowed (since returned).
http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1998&g2_serialNumber=2
It is absolutely tiny as you can see.. less than half the size and weight of the Arca and holds almost the same amount of load!! The downside is the price, just like the Gitzo, these things don't come cheap. But I figure like the Gitzo, buy once, cry once, and enjoy the quality forever. Tripods and heads are even more timeless than glass - the Arca B1 is a 30 year old design that has remained fundamentally unchanged!

That is why I could never watch that show...I knew the old bat was an ax murderer in disguise...In fact, I suspect that she was not only a killer on the show, but in real life too...

Yeah, is that weird, or what? I think I was using that multi quote thing, had Maureen's and Mark's quotes up, erased everything but the quote that shows, but came up as Maureen's. That's the best I could think of....
