Oh, business class is definitely available.

Problem is.... the damage for international travel is eye popping... that would buy you a couple of L's.. and not cheap ones either!

This is the bloody problem with being stationed far from home in the name of a career.. it's not like moving between cities in the US, if there was a land bridge, I don't care if I have to floor the throttle for 4000km, I'll make it home one way or other.

Problem is, the car don't drive so hot in water.......

Where are you & where is "home"?

Speaking of weight training, this bowflex is supposed to guarantee weight loss and tone in 6 weeks...so maybe, I'll give an update in 6 weeks, just to see if it works or not.

If it works for you, I may have to get one. Trouble is, I really need someone else to work out with me, or I will become unmotivated. When I run, there are plenty of kids at school who like to run with me. And taunt me.

As my photography will give away, currently in Melbourne Australia.

Home is somewhere much further north along the Asia Pacific rim (won't give away too much in this department :) )

It was funny, because my husband was reading the bowflex manual and it said "your partner should not be your spouse". I had to laugh because we're "it" so we'll have to agree not to kill one another doing this. But yes, I can see how having teens around to motivate, would inspire (or kill) one...

I have a thought.. I just got off the phone with my bestfriend.. thinking maybe after Africa I should spend next winter in San Diego.. I've been saying for a long time that I want to go back there as a photographer.. there were soo many places and things that I want to shoot in that area.... I could easily go work for one of the hotels, nice climate, even in the winter, i'm fairly sure that i'll be done with the snow by next fall... could be fun.. and sounds better than going off alone to a random place... atleast until next the spring after next when I want to head to Yellowstone... just thinking out loud... I think i'm a little compulsive trying to plan the next step and then the next one and the next....

Sari,
This sounds like a great opportunity and a wonderful way to start your adventure. Great photo ops, familiarity with the terrain, some personal relationships already in place seems like a nice transition. How lucky you are! :)

I lived down in Point Loma for about six months.. but, most of my time there was surrounded by my grandmother's illness and death.. I wasn't able to really enjoy myself and I wasn't a photographer but, I did love the ocean and it is an incredibly pretty area.. so, maybe get a job spend some time with Jeff and stay for six months or so.. I'm just passing ideas around myself really.. It seems like I just got here and all I want to do is plot the next adventure..

Seriously, with Jeff around you'll have the connections and not be too lonely that far from home. And it is a beautiful place. And the best part....if you don't like it, you can find another job elsewhere ;)

very true.. and I know my father would like to see me... it's been awhile.. and he's not as young as he used to be.. But, I wouldn't move there to be by him.. our conversations are productive for about three minutes and then we both run out of anything to say to the other.. But, Jeff has been around for about thirteen years and anywhere he's at is just 'home' to me as corny as that sounds.. He asked me for years to move up to Portland when he was there and I wouldn't do it. But, now he's moved to SD and I think we'd have a great time.. Besides, the brat absolutely refuses to go to Alberto's for carne asada fries until I get there...  ..

Good morning sunshine....how are things at the salt mine?
Salty and dessicating! I was up early this morning but crashed out again before you posted. this plave was pretty dead. I thought I was awake but glad I disabused myself of that foul notion. GOt to sleep in one more hour before I had to hit the classroom.
GOrgeous 70s here today after refreshing rain last night. The forecast is that the bitter cold will hold off until after the parade tonight. IF s, I may venture downtown with the 30D. or not.

Got a call from a former student- he transfered to KU (much to my delight and disappointment both) He is having his first article published soon; a revision of a paper he did for one of my courses. I am so proud of him. he is such a brilliant young scholar. Miss him too. Miss the challenge!

What's going on in the rest of the world?

Very descriptive Wu...bleah...when I checked in an hour or so ago it was pretty quiet too.

That's really cool re: your student. I'm sure it's nice to see tangible evidence that the effort in your courses has paid off...especially when it's been so stressful in other areas there.

No conservatory here. I haven't done "bugs" in years and years. Used to be really into that. I'll have to re-explore that avenue somehow.
I think I will likely work flowers and fruit/veggies, somewhat more abstract, maybe shallow DOF and focus on light, shadow, and form. . . . Have had some things in mind but don't have the lighting I need and have missed my macro lens.
color is off on these, but there are some things I want to try along these lines, as well:

I've always found my 350D's onboard actually made a very nice macro flash because its angle of coverage was so wide. Maximum flash power is generally not a concern (nor the fact that most of it goes wide and is wasted) since you work fairly close.

Need a $40 macro?

Bait is easy....

Walk into car dealership...

Shake head coyly at salesGUY (must be a guy.. and you must be a girl.. unless you aren't straight in which case all bets are off) and stammer "Ooooh I'd love a car and I'm not sure.. but this looks wonderful"

Like dumping a few hundred gallons of blood into the water near a school of sharks...

I am no fan of the car dealers... even as a guy they try to squeeze you for everything they can get.. I recently very nearly got railed.

Apart from that....more pleasant topics - macro.

You can build a $40 macro lens, no joking. It will give you far more than 1:1 magnification as well, I'd daresay at least 1.5 or 2X if you go all the way. You get, uhh, semi-automatic aperture control in the $40 version. Aperture is controlled by the exact science of guesstimation, by sticking blue tack or something solid in the stop down lever. ;)

However, optical quality is excellent. You make one by purchasing Ebay $20 'dumb' extension tubes, then supergluing a $20 Canon 50mm f/1.8 FD lens to the part where you would normally mount the lens.

If you are not scrounging, then buy something nice like the Super Takumar 1.4 50mm ($60?), a M42 to EOS adapter ($20) and the ex tubes ($20). This'll give you a very nice manual focus 50mm with full PROPER manual control of the aperture ring, but it doubles the price. Put the ex tubes on for macro, take 'em off for a fast 50/1.4 MF.

No Photoshop. Just Araldite 2-part extreme strength epoxy, mix, apply, and leave to cure for 24 hours (72 to maximum bond strength).

You need not sacrifice the camera, because you can still remove the ext. tubes at the camera-side EOS mount. You glue the lens to the TUBE EOS mount (silver ring in the second picture), not the camera EOS mount. (of course if you mess this part up I am not responsible :p)

Why not just get a 50mm threaded adapter....and use the lens reversed?

Lightstream

I initially thought that the Canon would give me full mechanical aperture control. Sadly, after buying the hardware, I found out the hard way that you set the aperture on the lens, which signals the camera to stop it down. Rather than the normal M42 screwmount way of "turn aperture dial makes blades close or open". Damn.

So... I make the best of it

I've considered this too.
Or I might just ask the kids to buy me a lens for the holidays. Actually should have them put the cash toward the computer josh wants to build me.

Not worth the money. What would I do with a 300mm? Take pics of the neighbours in their bedroom?

I wouldn't mind having a 300, but I think I'd rather have an f/2.8 aperture. Or more likely the Sigma 120-300. It's the most versatile zoom for field sports. I couldn't take pics of my neighbors. You can't see any other houses from here.

No conservatory here. I haven't done "bugs" in years and years. Used to be really into that. I'll have to re-explore that avenue somehow.
I think I will likely work flowers and fruit/veggies, somewhat more abstract, maybe shallow DOF and focus on light, shadow, and form. . . . Have had some things in mind but don't have the lighting I need and have missed my macro lens.
color is off on these, but there are some things I want to try along these lines, as well:

http://static.flickr.com/68/199412090_17bb1db1e7_b.jpg

"Food". "Cat eating"
"Rest". "Cat sleeping"
"Photography." "Taking pictures of the cat"
"Work." "Waking up to feed cat."
"Oh dear, you seem very preoccupied with your cat." "mmmm cat"

(so one animal can double for virtually any imaginable subject....not saying that you are cat crazy or anything ;) )

Our weather was still pretty balmy today. A lot of the kids have been wearing shorts, and I had my classroom windows open with the ceiling fans running full blast. But tomorrow is supposed to bring a cold front and possible snow storm with 16 degree weather. Brrrrr!

Fixed! Sorry, access control on my gallery defaults to quite restrictive permissions.

nice poster! I bet the story is a hoot.
duck balls, huh? I've had fishball soup with Kim Chee. Always liked kim chee, but fish ball soup must be an acquired taste- well, it did taste better than it smelled when cooking.

Lightstream
29th of November 2006 (Wed), 21:23
The background of the story is that basically, one of my guys and I were doing lunch (as we often do). Now my crew are exceptionally capable people who do the extraordinary on a regular basis... (I am one of the less-capable unfortunately, although they keep assuring me this is not the case). And the original dish is duck soup with kim chee, which is phenomenally good that we'll drive 20 miles just to eat it. Thus begins the story...

So we're talking at lunch, and I'm mentioning I have seen something rather incredulous (I forget exactly what it was). And my friend goes "Dude, that's as rare as duck's balls."

And I shoot right back "DUDE, duck's don't *HAVE* balls." (if you've seen the 'diving duck' POTN shots, you'll realize, the uhh, underside.. is, uhh, flat.)

"Well, if I find some, will you eat them?"

And I back off double quick since I KNOW these people are so damn capable they will end up finding duck's balls and I WILL end up eating them

Since that day, "serving duck's balls" has been synonymous with proving that it can be done despite what the skeptics say. They all told us it was impossible.. we made it happen. And the duck is still looking for its extra bits ;)

(no ducks were emasculated during the making of this production. However, tough luck to the one in the soup....)

Wool, how many miles on that stealthy ride of yours? or did you lose it in the driveway?

340 miles and climbing....had a whole 6 on it when I bought it. I had to go back to the dealer today to drop off the check...pick up some paperwork and jump through a few hoops...I stopped on a back country road to take a picture and almost couldn't find it again!

OH, I sent an email. Just said I would be unable to do the shoot. No explanations or offer of reschedule. I'm still too mad. And yes, I do feel good about it. I was inspired by Wool's burning of his negatives....I hate being used. I think someday, I might just ask "exactly what was your perception of our agreement"? But not until I can be completely calm...
That a girl!!! I am so proud of you!:D :D :D

very cool wool.. I dreamed strangely enough that it was eight in the morning last night and I was two hours late for work. I was halfway dialing my managers phone number when I realized it was night time.. and then I dreamed that Ryan and Marvin were trying to break into my apartment.. and I thought I should get up and tell them to just knock and they can come in.. Turns out my neighbors door lock had frozen and he couldn't get in... weird night...

At least there is a semi-logical explanation for some of the dream...Better invite Ryan and Marvin over for a beer and explain the rules to them....;)

I don't have any beer.. I have wine. and i'm reminded constantly that beer needs to be on the grocery list... .. oh well.. the funny part is that Ryan has a master key (Oh powerful one that he is).. No reason to brake into my apartment.. but, the dream part didn't register that information.. .. I suppose that the melatonin 'natural sleep supplement' was a bad idea.. not sure if I should try it again.. atleast i'm not tired today.. I'm just waiting around to hear if other pipes are going to freeze around here... I didn't dare turn my heat off in my house..

Invite them over for a beer....and then instruct them to bring their favorite flavor...guys are dumb like that...we will bring our own beer...and think it was a good idea.

Hell no....men are also quite capable of drinking someone else's beer. Having some on hand is never a bad thing...besides...you like beer too.;)

I'd not stop with tights....we're talking several clothing layers and then heavy furs (or simulated furs if one belongs to PETA)...and then I'd be in front of a large fire, luxuriating....now that sounds nice ;)
