Purpose/Benefits of Ring Flash?

Hi,

I did a search but I couldn't find much. Can someone please tell me what the purpose and/or benefits of a ring flash is.

From what I have found a ring flash basically will almost reduce all shadows from a a subject? Is that true? Any other benefits?
